I can’t believe it has been 15 years since Oaks Christian School opened its doors!

In 2000, my youngest child, Bobbi Jo, was entering the terrible twos and in June she will be a member of the Class of 2016. It has been an honor to be part of the school since its creation. OCS co-founders David Price and Dallas Price-Van Breda held strong hope that they were building a college-preparatory school, anchored in Christ, in pursuit of academic excellence, artistic expression, and athletic distinction, while growing in knowledge and wisdom through God’s abundant grace. As a board, we are resolute in our commitment to this mission and pleased to help lead Oaks Christian School and its leadership team into the 21st century.

Oaks Christian School represents many exceptional individuals who have shared a common enthusiasm to pursue greatness, including a number of our alumni. For example, Andrew Blackmon who was in the first graduating class (’03) has become a successful entrepreneur, starting a unique tuxedo business right here in Southern California. Also, Bobby Nordlund (’08) who graduated from the United States Naval Academy, is currently serving our country as an accomplished naval aviator, while his sister Samantha (’10), a 2014 graduate from the University of Notre Dame, recently returned from a year of working with orphaned children at Open Arms Home in Komga, South Africa. And one of our most recent OCS graduates, Matthew Chen (’14), is currently a concert cellist attending the Julliard School in New York City.

It is because of alumni like these and the extraordinary blessings of God in these last 15 years, that we confidently head into the next 15 years and beyond. With your support and God’s continued guidance, we will remain faithful to our mission as we graduate students who will be persons of influence, integrity and impact in the fields of business, sports, performing and visual arts, medicine, ministry, and many other callings.

GRANDPARENTS CREATE A

LastingLegacy

Co-founders David Price and Dallas Price-Van Breda so believed in Christian education that in the early 1990s, they made a donation to help build a new Christian school in Pacific Palisades, which later would become the grade school their grandchildren would attend. It was their hope that their grandchildren would continue their Christian education throughout high school. After searching with no luck to find a suitable school in the greater Los Angeles area, The Prices chose to build Oaks Christian School.

Through their perseverance, dedication, generosity and God’s grace, Oaks Christian School opened in 2000.

Dreams have been fulfilled and lives have been forever changed because of the Price’s desire for their grandchildren and for others. We are so grateful to our co-founders and to the many grandparents who continue to give their time and resources to support students and the OCS mission.

The high school building, also known as the Price Academic Center, along with the current Calvary Community Church facility were used to develop technology for the government.

The property changed hands twice in three decades before Calvary Community Church purchased it in 1997. In 1998, after an extensive search, the Price family purchased half of the property and in August 2000, Oaks Christian School opened its doors with 198 students in grades 6, 9 and 10.

MR. ROGER HALL High School Science Teacher (Retired spring 2015) Roger Hall, science teacher extraordinaire, reflects fondly on his 15 years at Oaks Christian School, having just retired at the end of the 2014-15 school year after 30 years of teaching.

Hall was one of only two science teachers on staff at the start, developing the initial framework for a science program that he says was “both God-honoring and state-of-the-art.”

He marvels at how quickly the school grew to capacity, while still maintaining the professional, close-knit community feel and dedication to its mission.

“Preparing minds for leadership and hearts for service” is the OCS motto and something our teachers and staff have done well since 2000 when Oaks Christian School opened its doors. Inspiring students to gain knowledge, explore new talents and interests, and understand God’s purpose in their lives is what has made OCS teachers and staff so extraordinary. In celebration of the school’s 15-year anniversary, we are honoring our faculty and staff who have made an incredible impact on the lives of our students and others, in the classroom, in the hallways, on the field, and on stage. We celebrate them!

In this honorary 15-year annual report, it is our pleasure to pay tribute to just some of our “original” faculty and staff who have been at Oaks Christian School since the beginning, as well as others who have more recently joined the OCS family. Each of these individuals has been a beacon of light, helping shape students and our school.

Hall always hoped to nurture students’ interest in science as well as an understanding that it affirms the miracle of God’s creation. “Our students need spiritual strength and wisdom so their faith will not be shredded when they venture on to college,” Hall said. Hall enjoyed teaching chemistry and physics, however his favorite class was the aeronautics and rocketry course. “Science is inherently inspiring and if one makes the task of learning fun, students are inspired to learn more,” he said.

Now that he is retired, you may catch a glimpse of him volunteering as a docent at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library or as a resource volunteer for youth groups such as the Civil Air Patrol. Looking to the future, Hall is hopeful that Oaks Christian School will continue to flourish in an ever-changing world. “I pray that our school will remain well-grounded in its faith, true to its calling and its mission.”

ANOTHER YEAR AT 100-PERCENT GIVING

OCS faculty and staff continue to give generously to the OCS Financial Aid Program with another year at 100-percent giving. Their financial support represents their commitment to students, families and alumni, and is an endorsement of the school’s mission: “To dedicate ourselves to Christ in the pursuit of ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, ARTISTIC EXPRESSION, and ATHLETIC DISTINCTION, while growing in wisdom and knowledge through God’s abundant grace.”

In preparation for the school’s opening, a sign was placed in front of the school facing the 101 Freeway, promoting employment opportunities. Most applicants applied because they said they “saw the sign.” A T-shirt was created and proudly worn by the inaugural faculty and staff members.

High School Spiritual Life Director (2001-2015)

High School Athletic Director (2000-Present)

Giving back is something Jim Lee did each and every day without question at Oaks Christian School. As the first OCS director of spiritual life, Lee went out of his way to care for people. “Dedicated to Christ means to love kids and families,” Lee said. This is what he enjoyed most about his role—being “in the trenches,” serving others and the Lord.

Sharing his love for Christ with student-athletes, coaches and others is what keeps Jan Hethcock inspired to come to work each day. As the original OCHS athletic director and the first girls’ soccer coach, Hethcock has made his tenure, all about God. “It’s not all about winning,” Hethcock said. “It’s about sharing the Gospel and providing a better foundation for our kids, which helps prepare them when they leave high school.” He has many Bible verses that provide him refuge, but Hethcock says his favorite is Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Overseeing 45 athletic teams keeps Hethcock on his toes, but he still makes time to watch students compete, share devotionals with teams and host Bible studies with coaches.

As pastor of contemporary worship at Bel Air Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles in the 1990s, Lee had the privilege of meeting parishioner— and later OCS co-founder—David Price. They were both avid pilots and soon became good friends. David Price noticed Lee’s faithfulness and love for people, so he suggested a new position, one that would entail working with kids at a high school.

“I felt unqualified at first. I hadn’t worked with kids in 10 years,” said Lee. In no time, he was leading chapels, heading up mission trips and coaching football. Lee has always been intentional in his relationships with students. In fact, he has kept in contact with a number of OCS alumni over the years.

In June 2015, Lee accepted a new position as director of spiritual formation and discipleship at Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. Lee and his family are excited about the new opportunities God has planned for them and they look forward to welcoming friends and family for a visit to “Music City.”

Earning a B.A. in liberal arts with an emphasis in education and teaching from Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, Hethcock went on to receive a master’s degree in physical education. Since then, he has spent his entire career (over 30 years) working with youth in Christian education. In his spare time, Hethcock enjoys playing golf and spending time with his wife and family— especially his four grandchildren who are his joy.

MRS. TRICIA HACKER Middle School Art History Teacher (2000-Present) “To go beyond just looking and truly see” is the hope Tricia Hacker has for all of her Middle School art history students. “I inspire them to think deeply and to get to know God’s creation.” One of three original middle school teachers, Hacker feels blessed to have taught each and every sixth grader who has been at the school. She was also an integral part of creating the vision for the middle school building. “I was able to help with the design. To see it filled with students and functioning exactly the way I envisioned, brings me such joy!”

Hacker finds that the original focus of Oaks Christian School, providing a high-level, classical education in a Christian environment, has allowed her to keep God at the center of her teaching. “I pray that my art history lessons reflect Christ’s love for each of my students. I want them to know that each one of them is a masterpiece created by the greatest Artist of all time.” Hacker also shared that inspiring her students to think deeply, tell their story and express themselves artistically, is the pathway to becoming open to experiences they will find in God’s diverse world. “I see them change and leave here having grown in knowledge and character. I am honored to use art history to encourage them to embrace all the beauty and culture His creation holds.”

DR. JIM ALTIZER High School Performing Arts Teacher (2000-2005), High School Bible Teacher (2005-Present) Dr. Jim Altizer does not lack charisma. His high energy and love for his students makes him a “favorite” teacher among many. For the past five years, Altizer has been teaching eleventh-grade Bible and prior to that he was one of the first OCS performing arts teachers. Altizer received his B.A. from University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music where he studied music performance and received his M.A. in music education. Altizer made a major switch in his career when, as he said, “God took me on a left turn.” He was 50 years old when he went back to school to pursue a doctorate degree in worship studies. “I’m so happy [I did],” he said.

As a High School Bible teacher, Altizer recognizes the importance of being relational and transparent. “I try to share the good, bad and ugly about life with my students,” he said. “Life can be messy.” Altizer also acknowledges the vast differences in students’ knowledge of Christ and the Bible. Being creative and “on the front lines” with his students helps him share the Gospel in ways that they can better relate—no matter where they are in their faith. Altizer hopes that he can help “…kids not only know about God, but that they will know God.” Altizer is married to Mary Kay Altizer, a musician and OCS performing arts director. He continues to play his flute and guitar on a regular basis and enjoys sharing his love for music with students during chapels and at special engagements.

MRS. ROSALIND ALLEN-ENCISO Director of High School Theatre Arts (2000-Present) Building meaningful relationships with her students is Rosalind (Ros) Allen-Enciso’s favorite thing about working at Oaks Christian School. A director, teacher and leader who has guided and developed the high school theatre arts program from day one, she brings a passion for inspiring and challenging students to create truthful thought-provoking art. “Theatre, at its very core, is about illuminating the human condition. And one of Theatre’s greatest gifts is its ability to cultivate compassion,” she shared.

In addition to an extensive and successful 25-year career in film and television, Allen-Enciso not only developed all levels of the OCS theatre arts curriculum, but she has also directed over 30 major productions for the high school. In 2010, she earned the Atsinger Teaching Excellence Award, and this year she received the prestigious award for Best Musical Direction at the Jerry Herman High School Musical Theatre Awards of Los Angeles. But she is most proud of the numerous awards her students earn annually for the OCS theatre arts program, most notably the recognition of excellence for the entire cast and the ensemble, in those productions.

Allen-Enciso feels exceedingly blessed to work at a school whose leadership embraces and rejoices in the arts. It is her hope that as Oaks Christian School continues to grow, it always remains centered on God’s love. “Through the theatre arts program, I hope I have inspired my students to care for each other, to be truthful, grateful, compassionate and diligent, to know that God created something unique and remarkable in each one of them,” she said.

“And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

PHILIPPIANS 1:6 (ESV)

MR. MATT HURDLE High School History and Economics Teacher (2010–Present) Citing Proverbs 27:17, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another,” history and economics teacher Matt Hurdle attributes much of Oaks Christian School’s success to never resting on its laurels and always seeking new possibilities.

Hurdle is grateful to work in a supportive Christian environment.

“I get to be my authentic self and teach with the understanding that God is the foundation of all knowledge,” he shared.

After growing up in Oceanside, California, he ventured north to Pepperdine University where he earned his B.A. in economics and an M.A. in American studies. In 2012, Hurdle married OCS alumna, Hannah Klodt (’06). Just having completed his fifth year of teaching, Hurdle enjoys working alongside others who inspire him always to reach higher. “Because of our [school’s] independent nature, we are able to experiment,” shared Hurdle. This fall he introduced a new entrepreneurial program, which allows students the opportunity to learn from real-life business professionals, while gaining knowledge of business practices and skills in a Christian environment.

MRS. HAYLEY PENTON High School Activities Director (2014–Present) High School Activities Director Hayley Penton wants to set the record straight: She is NOT a student! However, she is honored to be a part of God’s plan at Oaks Christian School. “He is the author of all we do here. He orchestrates this place and I get to show up and be a part of it,” said Penton.

As she reflects on the day-to-day activities of the school, Penton is inspired by her students and co-workers. “I am amazed by the breadth of what is happening on campus each and every day,” she shared. She hopes to encourage students to ask questions and clarify the purpose of their actions such as, “Why are we doing this?

Whom does it serve? What could make it better for our community?”

With an eye towards modeling servant leadership for her students, Penton cites Luke 15:20 as a favorite Bible verse. She believes it speaks about God’s compassion for His children, no matter how far away they are from Him. “God knows all of our students,” Penton shared. “He seeks them and has compassion for them. I have experienced this picture of Christ—I know it is true!”

MRS. ELISABETH (GILL, ‘07) HOEKENDORF High School English Teacher (2012–Present) Elisabeth Hoekendorf has been part of the OCS family since 2001, first as the sibling of a student, then a student herself and now as a teacher. “God’s faithfulness was evident during my years at OCS. It was here my desire met my calling and I found I wanted to be an English teacher!” she said.

Hoekendorf attended Biola University through the Torrey Honors Institute where she received a B.A. in secondary instruction with an emphasis in English. After marrying her husband, Daniel, in 2012, she joyfully returned to Oaks Christian School to teach English full time. She is passionate about helping her students pursue Truth in their study of language and literature. “His fingerprints are on every page and each class is an opportunity to point students towards God’s truth,” she said.

Hoekendorf is inspired by her coworkers and students each and every day. She feels blessed to be in a place where knowing and honoring Jesus is the basis for the school’s academic, artistic, and athletic endeavors. When asked about her hopes for the future, she stated, “It is my heart’s desire that Oaks Christian School continue to be a ‘city on a hill’ for Jesus as we cultivate ‘Minds for Leadership and Hearts for Service.’”

MR. ANTHONY SALCIDO Middle School Spiritual Life Director (2014–Present) As the Middle School Spiritual Life Director, Anthony Salcido knows he has been called to be an ambassador for Christ. “God knew what He was doing because being here has been nothing short of amazing,” he said. A Thousand Oaks native and graduate of California State University, Northridge, Salcido enjoys having fun with faculty, staff and students, but he also knows when to be serious. Most of Salcido’s day is spent with students—in his office, at chapels or during lunch and around campus. A “committed follower of Christ,” Salcido is excited to be part of the OCS family where he can help “enrich [students’] hearts and minds through a Christian worldview.”

Married to Nancy and the father of three sons—Joshua, Josiah and Jesse—Salcido brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Oaks Christian School as a parent and from his tenure at Young Life (a non-profit ministry aimed at helping teens find hope and a purpose).

Salcido says, “I hope to see [Oaks Christian School] continue to impact the world through its students who are enlightened by the light of Christ.”

SHARING NEW BEGINNINGS Twenty-one new students entered the OCS Academy V classroom on the first day of school this year. Excited students were met by their teacher Mrs. Mary Wilson who welcomed them to fifth grade. Throughout the year, students were given tangible opportunities to serve others and expand their knowledge through experimentation, creation and exploration as they pursued academic excellence, artistic expression and athletic distinction.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR INCLUDE:

• An overnight trip to the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific • An interactive visit to the Discovery Center at Ronald Reagan Presidential Library • A trip to the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza to see “A Christmas Carol” • A lesson about engineering and computer science through building robotics with OCS dad Dave Henson during the first semester • A visit to the Skirball Cultural Center to witness life as an immigrant to Ellis Island • A day of exploring the wonders of science, including a viewing of the Space Shuttle Endeavor at the California Science Center and a Skype session with a NASA astronaut and crew member from the Endeavor’s final mission • Opportunities to participate in flag football, basketball, soccer and volleyball teams • Understanding what it takes for new business ideas to come to fruition in a semesterlong lesson led by OCS dad Craig Duswalt, which culminated in a “Shark Tank” experience • Exploring the creative process through media such as pencils, pastels, charcoal, watercolor and more • Serving others by sending cards to hospitalized veterans, hosting canned food drives and Pennies for Patience • Experiencing music through band and orchestra instrument demonstrations and learning about music theory

The first OCS mission trip was during summer 2001 when Mrs. Sherrie Mitchell and two students traveled to Peru through World Vision.

OOSTER CLUB

The Oaks Christian Booster Club is a non-profit, parent-run organization that provides support and encouragement to Oaks Christian School studentathletes. Through the years, the Booster Club has provided needed equipment and improvements to the middle school and high school programs. Booster Club members serve as a tremendous volunteer force for OCS athletic events. Between the middle school and high school, Oaks Christian School fielded 95 teams this past year with more than 71 percent of our students participating in at least one sport.

During the 2014-2015 school year, more than $170,000 was raised through Booster Club membership, advertising, sponsorship, merchandise and concession sales, which helped to support the following:

AKS PERFORMING ARTS SOCIETY

Since its inception, the Oaks Performing Arts Society (OPAS) has been led by a non-profit booster board of parent volunteers who are dedicated to preserving and augmenting the essential resources necessary for an extraordinary performing arts department. OPAS embodies the belief that the arts play an integral part of academia to inspire, nurture and enhance the cultural life of our students. In addition, performing arts imparts a sense of expression and personal fulfillment.

Over the years, OPAS has advocated for the performing arts through several avenues. One approach is providing an opportunity for families to become a Member of OPAS through the different levels of financial participation. Another is our annual Music Fest, which combines the delectable cuisine of specialty food

trucks with extraordinary student-based performances.

This event in particular provides a significant sense of community with the performing arts. Finally, our latest endeavor is the Impresario Campaign. This presents families and friends a way to offer encouragement to our students by sponsoring a seat in the Bedrosian Pavilion. As a result of these combined efforts, OPAS has proudly endowed and supported hundreds of programs and resources including, baby grand pianos, instruments for all disciplines, Marley dance floors, Logix Pro Lab and Pro Tools, wireless microphones for the Gosnell Stage, master teachers and choreographers, professional development programs for our educators, and much more.

In addition to monetary support, OPAS is thankful to the many volunteers who complemented the vast array of performing arts events this year.

It was a jolly good time of fun, philanthropy and fellowship as the OCS community celebrated its 15th annual Gala Dinner Auction with a British Invasion phenomenon theme, “All You Need its Love.” Held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village, the gala event featured silent and live auctions and entertainment by the OC Voices and Band, as well as the “Sgt. Pepper” Band.

Sponsored by David H. Murdock, along with many other sponsors and donors, the auction raised more than $570,000 for all OCS students, which enables Oaks Christian School to continue to impact students’ lives.

The evening was a festive combination of elegance and fun. Four hundred-plus guests arrived decked out in their gala attire, but also in 1960s British “mod” fashions. The lobby displayed hundreds of silent auction items as well a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4Matic for the opportunity drawing sponsored by M. David and Diane Paul.

As the guests made their way to the dining room, they were welcomed by emcee Dr. Jim Altizer, one of the original and “favorite” teachers at Oaks Christian School. The vibe kicked into high gear with the live auction, featuring celebrity auctioneers and Oaks dads Brad Garrett, Dean Cain, Terry Lewis, Ray Parker, Jr., Chris Harrison and Rob Riggle. They cajoled, teased and good-naturedly roasted the audience to keep increasing the bids on items such as two adorable Yorkshire terriers, a romantic European wine cruise, a Grammy experience and Jimmy Jam Harris recording session, a Napa Valley getaway, a behind-the-scenes Shark Tank experience, a taping of “Riggle’s Picks” on Fox NFL Sunday Pregame Show, an OC Learning Center and Neurotopia package, two tickets to the Ellen DeGeneres Show, and a Robb Report “Car of the Year” and Audi Sports Car Experience.

Oaks Christian School is grateful to all the hundreds of parents, students, faculty and staff, and other donors who made this event possible. We also extend a special thanks to our All You Need Is Love Auction parent volunteers who donated countless hours of service.

Class of 2015

COLLEGE MATRICULATION The 2015 Oaks Christian School graduates prepared well during their four years of high school, achieving and often exceeding “academic excellence, artistic expression and athletic distinction.” Notably, 92 percent of the 249 graduates from the Class of 2015 are attending a four-year university in 27 states and 105 schools. In addition, more than $5.5 million has been given for academic scholarships and nearly 15 percent of graduates were recruited to play college sports.

Staying Connected Beginning with the first class of 2003, Oaks Christian School has fostered meaningful traditions and worked to keep a close community among its alumni. While attending Oaks Christian School, students have the opportunity to build strong relationships with classmates, families, and faculty. In fact, over the years, alumni have maintained a very special bond with the OCS community, returning to visit, serve and support their alma mater.

INAUGURAL ALUMNI TURKEY BOWL A new tradition was started this year by alumnus Kyle Stanich (’09) when he organized the first annual OCS Alumni Turkey Bowl. The game took place at the OCS Thorson Stadium on Thanksgiving morning. Forty alumni played in this new event, which was a great way for alumni to reunite on the OCS campus for some fun competition.

CLASS OF 2005: 10-YEAR REUNION This year, alumni from the Class of 2005 gathered for an informal 10-year reunion.

A number of alumni worked together to organize the event, which turned out to be a great time. A handful of OCS faculty and staff stopped by to say hello and catch up.

LOOK WHO WAS AT THE 2014 HOMECOMING GAME

A STANDING TRADITION Since the Class of 2003, it has been an OCS tradition for our graduating class to give a legacy gift to the school. This year, the Class of 2015, led by Senior Class President Grace Zilli, gave an honorary financial gift to the newly formed Oaks Christian School Endowment Fund. The Class of 2015 parents also donated, showing their support in keeping the OCS legacy alive forever.
