Chronicle's of the Burger

So the story goes...the local legendary burger was created in the mid 1970 's, at a small cafe on Main Street the 'Dorray Burger,' a home grown hero, was born. Ray and Doris Schieber purchased the Rainbow Cafe and renamed it Ray's Bar & Grill in Annandale where all your favorite foods were served in the popular red basket. The number one seller was the hamburger/cheeseburger basket, as a result, Ray and Doris decided to test out other versions of the burger. Their children, Sue, Andy, Tina & Tim, thought this was a fantastic idea as they got to be the test subjects. Burgers topped with many cheeses, onions, mushrooms and even onion rings...the Dorray Burger was born and named after Ray and Doris Schieber. The burger piled high and spilling over with diced iceberg lettuce, white onion and tomatoes, all mixed with special sauce, quickly became a town favorite and claim to fame for the Schieber's.

As time went on, many other establishments in the area created their own mouthwatering creations and take on the Dorray Burger; Homestyle Country Cafe - Charlie Burger (pictured), Lala's Bar & Grill - Lala Burger and in previous bars; Bedrock Bar & Grill - Bedrock Burger and Mom's Place - Powerhouse Burger. Now that your stomach is growling, be sure to stop in to one of our local establishments and grab a burger and Coke!

LAKE AUGUSTA

A favorite fishing spot for a lot of the people who live on the Clearwater Lake chain. Consistently good, year after year on opening weekend. Lake Augusta is protected from high winds by steep banks on all sides of the lake. The warm river current brings in and holds the largest fish including; Sunfish, Crappies, Walleye’s and Northern. Lake Augusta is located 3 miles NW of Annandale and spans across 187 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 82 feet and 7 feet of water clarity.

BASS LAKE

Great lake for Bass & panfish like the name implies. Also, one of the clearest lakes in the area making it harder to fish on bright, sunny days. As for Walleyes...they are few and far between, but if you catch one, it’s going to be BIG! The Northern are also better than average; not always real big, but plenty of keepers can be had if you fish the right place...keep moving around! Bass Lake is located 4 miles N of Annandale and spans across 222 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 34 feet and 15 feet of water clarity.

LAKE BETSY

Like all lakes that connect by a river, there’s a good variety of game fish. The Walleyes are what bring most people to Lake Betsy. There’s not a lot of them, but what you catch will be big! Winter ice can come early to this lake, ice anglers start here and then move to other lakes as they freeze. Panfish is the normal species early anglers are after. Lake Betsy is located 3 miles S of Kimball and spans across 153 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 29 feet and 5 feet of water clarity.

CAMP LAKE or LAKE HENRY

The “Old Timers” favorite lake when they want to catch a mess of fish. There is not a lot of competition from other anglers, just hungry locals. They say you can drop a line just about any place in the lake and catch a fish. Camp Lake warms quick in the spring, bringing the panfish into the shallows. You don’t need a big Bass boat, just bring a big fish basket. Camp Lake is located 8 miles S of Annandale and spans across 122 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 45 feet and 5 feet of water clarity.

LAKE CAROLINE

You’ll find good fishing on this lake but with limited access anglers have to get creative. Access is by the Clearwater River from Lake Augusta in a small boat or canoe. Some people float down from County Road 2 in kayaks and canoes, as there is no public access. There’s a good number of big Sunfish and Crappie year-round, and they don’t get over fished. Walleye and Northern come up the river in the spring and quite a few never go back down. The fish will stack up where the river flows in after spawning before slowly dispersing back down stream to Clearwater Lake. Lake Caroline is located 2 miles N of South Haven and spans across 135 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 45 feet and 5 feet of water clarity.

CEDAR LAKE

One of the first flour mills in the area was just off the North end of the lake on Cedar Creek around the 1800’s. Cedar Lake is deep at 108 feet but you don’t have to fish deep to find action. Use your locator and find a bump or a bar that leads away from the shore and you’ll find the fish. Some days the fish are in shallows, other days they are deep and close to a structure. Cedar Lake is located 3 miles E of Annandale and spans across 790 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 108 feet and 8 feet of water clarity.

CLEARWATER LAKE

This is the lake most people think of when you mention the town of Annandale, it’s been bringing people to the area since the 1880’s. Visitors would come by train and then take a horse and buggy to the resorts. Clearwater Lake is always a good fishing lake, but the structure will drive you crazy...bring the GPS so you can save the good spot for next year. The lake is split in the middle by a sand bar at the ‘Narrows’ and the West basin has every fish you can think of to catch. East basin has the deep bars and plenty of Walleye honey holes. If you find a map marked by an ‘Old Timer’ where to fish, hide it in your safe. Most of the landmarks on shore the old guys use are gone now, so remember to mark them on your GPS. Clearwater Lake is located 3 miles N of Annandale and spans across 3,186 acres. This Lake also has a max depth of 73 feet and 7.6 feet of water clarity on the East end and 9 feet on the West end.

EAGLE LAKE

This little lake is cherished by those that live there. With good water clarity, it’s great for swimming and fishing. A pontoon is the choice for most residents on Eagle Lake. Walleye are few but available to those that look. Northerns run small but there’s always a 30 incher or two caught every year. Sticking with panfish on this lake is a sure bet, and nice Bluegills can be found in the lily pads during the warmer months. Eagle Lake is located 7 miles NE of Maple Lake and spans across 190 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 38 feet and 10.6 feet of water clarity.

LAKE EDWARD

With no public access, Lake Edward gives the fisherman the ease to move from lake to lake in the summer and also gives them the chance to try for Walleye this lake holds. Once used as a rearing pond, Walleyes are still there and fished by winter fisherman. The DNR no longer stocks or uses the pond, but the Walleye population still survives. Lake Edward is located 5 miles SE of Annandale and spans across 92 acres with 5 feet of water clarity.

LAKE FRANCIS

This gem of a lake is on the far side of Wright County and half the lake is in Meeker County, but the fish don’t know the difference and bite equally well any place on Lake Francis. Known locally for an abundance of small ‘hammer handle’ Northern, the lake is a sleeper for that occasional big Pike that will test the limit of any fishing gear. A large population of Largemouth and a few Smallmouth in Lake Francis can also drive you crazy. Did we mention the big Sunfish? Locals get real hush-hush when they start to bite, watch for the boats that don’t move! Lake Francis is located 2 miles NE of Kingston and spans across 105.3 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 17 feet and 10 feet of water clarity.

FRENCH LAKE

MOOSE LAKE OR LAKE MOSES

Off the beaten path, but a fun lake to fish offering little to no competition. This is a good slip bobber fishing lake for getting down to the big Bass. Some love throwing a frog over the thick stuff to find Bass and Northern where the creek comes in, or where it flows out, in between isn’t bad either. MUD LAKE

Anglers rarely speak of this little lake, but it does offer some very nice Sunfish and Crappie. It’s always good to explore a different water now and then, and this one should be on your list. You won’t have much competition and you won’t need a big boat! Mud Lake is located 8 miles S of Annandale and spans across 57 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 65 feet and 5 feet of water clarity.

OTTER LAKE

Known as ‘The Big Little Lake’ and the go to spot for big Northern Pike, it also offers a bit of everything. The deep water holds nice surprises, but getting there can be a trek. Otter Lake is connected to Clearwater Lake through a channel. Work the edges right up to the cattails and hold on tight! Otter Lake is located NW of Clearwater Lake and spans across 92 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 51 feet and 8 feet of water clarity.

PICKEREL LAKE

A hidden gem with only walk-in access. Pickerel Lake doesn’t have record size Sunfish but what is there, will always give you a meal. Protected on all sides by tall trees and steep hills from the high winds, the calm it provides will allow you to fish on the windiest days. Pickerel Lake is located W of Lake Sylvia and spans across 20 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 37 feet and 3 feet of water clarity.

PLEASANT LAKE

A personal all-time favorite during the winter or summer months. The West side of Pleasant Lake has some of the biggest Bass in the area. Make sure to use strong line and fish in the weeds, or if you’re adventuress, use a cane pole or drop a frog in a spot and give it a shake. There are numerous humps around the lake that hold Walleye, start on the top of the humps and work deep. If there is a West wind, work the bar by the North public access for Crappie or work the East and South side with a small Minnow. Known for it’s city park on the South side and county park on the North side including; pavilions, picnic areas, fishing piers, launches and excellent sand beaches. Pleasant Lake is located in the city limits of Annandale and spans across 597 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 74 feet and 8 feet of water clarity.

ROCK LAKE

Hungry for a meal of fish, well...try Rock Lake! Winter anglers will hide the bucket if you ask them what they’re catching, normally all you hear is ‘a few’. This is a good panfish lake with some record class years finding plenty of 11” & 12” Crappies. Plan on launching the boat on your weekday off, you may have the lake to yourself, but don’t forget the big fish basket! Rock Lake is located 4 miles S of Maple Lake and spans across 183 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 37 feet and 3 feet of water clarity.

SILVER LAKE

Just on the South side of Silver Creek, this lake offers a little of everything. Some just fish from shore on the East side of Silver Lake by the Sportsman Club, Walleye and Northern being the main target. You may also find a Bullhead on your line, they taste great...keep them! Silver Lake is located 6 miles N of Maple Lake and spans across 82 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 42 feet and 4 feet of water clarity.

SUGAR LAKE

Known as the only state stocked Musky lake in the area, most anglers go after the big Crappie and Sunfish. Northern and Musky seem to follow the panfish, watch the depth finder and fish below the cloud of bait-fish. Most winter anglers target Walleye, find a ‘city’ of fish houses and ask, “what’s biting”. In the summer, drift the many hot spots along the drop-offs. Sugar Lake is located 6 miles N of Maple Lake and spans across 1,015 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 69 feet and 9 feet of water clarity.

LAKE SYLVIA

The ‘Crown Jewel’ to many with a water clarity standard to which most other lakes are compared. It was once said there were hardly any Walleyes in Lake Sylvia, this was because of Fresh Water Herring in the lake with fantastic water clarity making them hard to find and get to bite. A decline of Herring in the 60’s has made ‘Big Eyes’ easier to find as long as you fish cloudy days, in the weeds, or at night. Every now and then you hear of someone that caught a big Northern with a funny color, you know it’s a descendant of private Musky stocking. Most anglers come back yearly for the super Sunfish and Crappie. Make no mistake, this lake is a favorite destination for many! Lake Sylvia is located 4 miles SW of Annandale and spans 1,573 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 97 feet and a whopping 21 feet of water clarity.

LAKE UNION

Travel to the West side of Wright County and you’ll find this little gem. Only parking for 2 vehicles at the access, so you will have to get there early! Out in front of the access is a good spot to troll, or use a slip bobber and you may find a nice Crappie or Sunfish nearby...take your time and work the area. Lake Union is located 8 miles SW of Annandale and spans across 93 acres. This lake also has a max depth of 35 feet and 5 feet of water clarity.

Steve, owner/broker of Oak Realty, joined his father in the family business in 1986. In 2000, he took over the company and today is the backbone of what he says is the “best team of Realtors® around.” He says Oak separates itself from others by an unmatched strength in niche marketing. “We have a limited number of agents that are specialists in an area they truly love, many have spent most or all of their lives living in the Greater Annandale Area.”

He is proud of Oak’s strong philosophy of quality customer service, and the focus the company maintains on accurately understanding client needs and working together as a team. Paying attention to detail and getting the right information is the key to building successful personal relationships with clients and finding them the right property, he says.

Steve moved to Annandale at the age of 11, and grew up on Pleasant Lake where he resides today with his wife Kelly. They enjoy time spent with their two boys and their families including two grandchildren. He is a motorcycle enthusiast and enjoys traveling with his family.

He is a past president of the Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Pleasant Lake Association. He says the best parts of his job have been taking over the family business, showing others the area and lakes, and enjoying the atmosphere created by the people who work at Oak.

Steve specializes in investment properties and high-end vacation homes, and says he is a big believer in the Greater Annandale Area, “It’s a great place to invest in.” He is also known for his extensive market knowledge and his unmatched devotion to clients.

A lifetime resident of the Hasty, Silver Creek, Monticello, Maple Lake and Annandale areas, Dean’s career background has spanned a variety of positions in real estate sales, land and business development. He has owned a number of small businesses and also three real estate companies. Dean has extensive experience as a real estate agent and got his Broker’s license in 1992. Before joining Oak Realty as an Associate Broker, he owned and operated Lake Country Properties and Real Estate in Maple Lake, Emily and Outing. Dean’s focus is to make certain his buyers and sellers are completely satisfied with the transaction and assures them he has their best interest in mind. Dean currently operates Oak Realty’s Maple Lake office. Dean and his wife Bonnie live on Pleasant Lake in Annandale. They are blessed with three children and seven grandchildren.

Gary has been with Oak Realty for 26 years, and has lived in the Annandale area for 44 years. He followed his father’s footsteps into the real estate and appraisal business with Dagner & Associates in 1988 and also with Oak Realty in 1997. Carla has been a resident of the Annandale area since 1987 having lived in parts of California and North Dakota before settling in the French Lake countryside where she and her husband, a lifelong resident of the area, raised two sons, Jake and Philip.

Carla received a bachelors degree in social work from Gustavus Adolphus College and worked for many years as a social worker for Wright County, in addition to several other health care related positions.

Amy joined the Oak Realty team of realtors in the Spring of 2009. Raised on Lake Sylvia and familiar with the Heart of the Lakes area, Amy has a passion for the lake life in Annandale and surrounding communities.

She has a drive to help people discover the beauty of the lakes area and the expertise to help them find the right lake house, cabin, cottage, or home to fit their needs.

Amy worked in the mortgage and advertising fields before getting her real estate license. She enjoys the quick changes and challenges of the real estate industry, as well as the helpful, team atmosphere in the office.

The Sunday Star Tribune was widely-agreed to be the resource for new listings, and buyers often came through our office door with that ad in hand, eager to look at property.

Oak Realty welcomed John to their team of realtors in the fall of 2022. As a longtime resident of Locke Lake, John is eager to work with buyers and sellers and assist in their real estate journey. John and his wife Lori have spent many summer days on the lake with their three children. Whether it be boating or fishing year-round, Locke Lake has been where he and his family has many fond memories. He is past president and current board member of the Locke Lake Home Owner’s Association and enjoys being a part of many lake activities. When the weather cools, John spends his free time hunting with his lab Ruby, and being outdoors.

Angie joined Oak Realty in its Annandale Office in June 2009. She grew up in Annandale on Clearwater Lake and is raising her family in her hometown she loves dearly and the place her family has called home their entire lives. Angie holds an AAS Degree in Advertising Design from Minnesota School of Business and a Diploma in Graphic Design from Minneapolis Business College. She helps keep all of Oak on the leading edge of technology, she shares fresh ideas in marketing and advertising, and keeps our busy office running smoothly. Angie also manages lakeshore vacation rentals through the Oak Realty office. She enjoys working with such a close-knit group, and for a hometown company where there is opportunity to give back to the community she loves. In her spare time, Angie treasures spending time with her family, her husband Shawn, daughter Justice and son Chance, labs Sarge and Jackson, being active in her children’s activities and relaxing at her parents’ lake home. When presented with a moment of free time, they retreat to their land in South Dakota on Big Stone Lake. “I also enjoy going on motorcycle rides, traveling and camping.” She loves the changing of seasons and the array of colors the Heart of the Lakes displays year-round.

OUR HISTORY

Oak Realty was founded in 1974 when Don Bruggeman purchased Daryl Gunnarson Realty, and changed the name to Oak Realty after its location on Oak Avenue, Annandale’s charmed Main Street. Our red and white leaf was born and along with it, a tradition of providing quality real estate service in the Heart of the Lakes area.

We expanded into the 90’s and outgrew the office on Main Street. In 1996 Oak built a new office with more space and visibility on Highway 55. Steve purchased the business in 2000, and soon after the Internet began to change the industry in profound ways. By 2001 we had our first web site and the fat MLS books were collecting dust in the corner. Oak Realty acquired Lake Country Properties in neighboring Maple Lake in 2007, our local presence expanded to two offices, and our staff grew again. In 2019 we celebrated a milestone, 49 years in business. The anniversary also marked a new beginning. Though excited about where perseverance and hard work has brought the company in its early years, we’re even more excited about what lies ahead.

Our approach to business has changed greatly due to the shift in how buyers and sellers can obtain information. Over the years, however, the true relationship between agent and client hasn’t changed. Since our founding over 47 years ago, our success has been carried by our ability to build long-lasting relationships. Relationships based on honesty, respect and fair business practices. We love taking our customers for a drive through the area and educating them on the various lakes, neighborhoods and their histories. While the majority of today’s buyers (and sellers) have done research online before speaking to an agent, many are quick to realize there is a lot to learn about this area, and a visit with a local expert is a great place to start.

We are proud to be an innovative company. We enjoy seeking new solutions to bring into our business and have continued to do so as we grow and change.
