After completing her Level 3 course at Oaklands, Alisha Hall joined the Prison Service and is based at HMP Bedford. She regularly comes back to the college to help deliver aspects of the Custodial Care unit to current Level 3 students.

Take your first steps towards a career supporting the public. You’ll learn the essential skills for a wide range of careers, from the armed services and police force to roles at local authorities and central government.
What do I need? Three GCSEs at Grade 3/D or a relevant Level 1 course. Motivation, commitment and enthusiasm to participate in physical activity in college and voluntary activities in your spare time.
What will I learn? ● The role and work of the public services ● Working skills in the public service sector ● Public services and community protection ● Health, fitness and lifestyle ● Land navigation by map and compass ● Volunteering for the public services ● Preparing to respond to emergency incidents
What can I do next? You can progress onto the Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Uniformed Protective Services. With further training or study, you could go into a wide range of public sector occupations in both the uniformed and non-uniformed sectors. The uniformed protective services sector is diverse and encompasses public services such as the police service, the fire and rescue service, the armed services and the prison service. This programme prepares you for higher education and future employment in the sector.
What do I need? Four GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above including Maths or English or a Level 2 qualification in Public Services. A reasonable level of physical fitness and a willingness to learn the self-discipline of public service work.

What can I do next? You could progress to university or other degree level studies or apply for a range of entry-level roles within the Uniformed Protective Services sector including an apprenticeship.

The qualifi cation aims to provide learners with underpinning skills to support academic study and provide a level 3 qualifi cation linked to their proposed HE study. It allows a broad range of skills to be acquired which explore the role of the police force, criminology, types of crime, an introduction to law and legal frameworks, integrating ethical concepts and are underpinned by psychology, research and interpersonal skills which are important for anyone working in roles within this sector.
The Course is aimed at adults who may have not had the opportunity to attend university previously and wish to pursue a pathway into HE. It may also suit adults who may have moved into industry, perhaps via apprenticeships, and wish to progress to HE. What do I need? The L3 Access to HE Diploma is an intensive course and it is important that you understand the commitment. We will ask you to complete initial assessments in English and maths. We would expect you to be able to demonstrate that you are working at Level 2 in maths and Level 2 in English (GCSE level 4 or above). In addition you will have an interview with an Access to HE lecturer.
What will I learn? ● Careers in policing and criminology ● Ethics and values within policing ● Foundations of Law ● Introduction to Criminology ● Introduction to Policing ● Legislation for equality and diversity ● Professional interpersonal skills ● Social research methods
What can I do next? The course is designed for people to progress to university and study criminology for example. Learners can also progress to degree apprenticeships in policing looking at entry into the police.
