Dear Oak Knoll School Community, The 2017-18 school year was truly inspiring. His Eminence, Joseph W. Cardinal Tobin, was the first cardinal in the school’s history to celebrate Mass at Oak Knoll; our students traveled to France, Spain and Italy as part of our new Global Learning initiative; students programmed robots and designed virtual reality environments; field hockey won the tournament of champions; students placed nationally in the Catholic Math League competition; and much, much more. Our students directly benefit from your generosity, and your support of the 2017-18 Annual Fund enabled us to raise more than $1 million for the thirteenth year in a row. You gave to Oak Knoll because you believe in the impact our students are making on society. You believe in our mission. You believe in us. Your contribution to the 2017-18 Annual Fund allowed us to: • • • • • • • •
Create an outdoor prayer garden Enhance the math and science curriculum in the Lower School Add three new advanced placement offerings in the Upper School Replace the Lower School playground Purchase new innovative classroom furniture Install fiber optic cabling to upgrade capacity for phone, security and data networks Increase staffing in the College Counseling Office Increase financial aid to include funding for after-school care for qualified students
In addition to your Annual Fund support, your generosity helped us raise more than $1 million in a separate campaign to install a new turf field and drainage system in Chatham. This year, we look forward to welcoming the joint-accreditation team from the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools and the Middle States Association. We have been busily preparing and reflecting on our mission, performance and standards. It is through accreditation that we recommit to our proud 94-year tradition that enables us to prepare graduates who think globally, act morally and lead with conviction to make the world a better place. 2017-18 ANNUAL REPORT Dear Friends, On behalf of the Oak Knoll Board of Trustees, it is my pleasure to share Oak Knoll’s Annual Report for the 2017-18 school year. As each year comes to a close, Oak Knoll gives us new reasons to celebrate. Thanks to you, 2017-18 represents another year of more than $1 million raised in support of our annual fund, strong academic program, and the continued enhancement of our facilities to meet the needs of each and every student. The pages that follow are a testament to those accomplishments and to our shared sense of community and faith in Oak Knoll’s mission. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the many families who stepped forward with generosity and enthusiasm for the many fundraising and friend-raising efforts of the school, including this year’s turf field project. The completion of these fields helps us meet our goal of having Oak Knoll’s facilities match the quality of our programs. Behind the scenes this year, members of the Board, faculty and administration worked with an outside consultant to examine the ways Oak Knoll can continue to “attract and retain the best faculty and staff,” a key goal of our last round of strategic planning. Working with the nationally recognized firm, Littleford and Associates, we examined theschool’s compensation, benefits and evaluation structures. Benefits and salaries comprise a significant portion of the school’s budget each year, and the Board is fully committed to ensuring our compensation structures encourage lasting and positive relationships with existing and prospective faculty and staff. In all we do, we work to ensure the value and excellence of an Oak Knoll education while staying true to our Catholic mission and faith. It is my sincere honor to represent Oak Knoll as its Board Chair, and I thank Tim Saburn, our head of school, the administrators, faculty, and staff for their support. To my fellow trustees and trustee emeriti, I extend my warmest thanks for your service. I am fortunate to serve alongside a Board comprising current parents, alumnae, past parents and friends who all serve out of love of the school. Their advice, commitment, and financial support are a gift. As we look to the future, the Board maintains its commitment to continually examine where we are and where we want Oak Knoll to be in 20 years. ENDOWMENT Gifts to Oak Knoll’s endowment are important expressions of support for the school’s future. When contributing to an endowment fund, a donor’s intent is that the principal from the gift be used to generate earnings for the school in perpetuity. Income from endowment funds may be used to support the general operations of the school or a specific area of interest to the donor, such as scholarship aid or faculty professional development. JOANNE LUCEY AINSWORTH ’64 SCHOLARSHIP FUND Est. 2013
Established by generous members of the Oak Knoll Community, the Joanne Ainsworth Scholarship Fund supports, annually, one or more Lower School families with a financial award to be used toward payment of tuition. The intention behind the fund is to alleviate the financial strain of a private education on families who are committed to Catholic education for their children, but who struggle to meet the Lower School tuition requirements. The award is given on a year-to-year basis, and support for the chosen family or families may or may not extend beyond a single year. Decisions are made at the discretion of Oak Knoll School leadership with special consideration for families with more than one child attending the Lower School.

The family of Susan Bacher, class of 1978, has established this fund in her memory. Susan died of cancer at age 25, and this fund is designed to perpetuate her name by awarding annual scholarship assistance to a commendable student in need.

OAK KNOLL TURF PROJECT In the summer of 2018, Oak Knoll broke ground on a major field turf project at the school’s athletic facilities in Summit and Chatham. This included turfing the upper field and upgrading our drainage system in Chatham, as well as enhancing the team bench and spectator seating areas and replacing our existing turf field in Summit. In Chatham, the field turf replaced natural grass, which posed a problem during inclement weather. Now, our fields will be “play ready” much sooner for spring pre-season and throughout the year. Our facilities are also now up to the standards of the state high school sports sanctioning body (NJSIAA), which requires state sectional games and beyond to be played on turf surfaces for field hockey, soccer and lacrosse. We now offer competitive facilities against top teams in the state, no longer requiring us to pay high last-minute rental fees for turf or to make long trips in order to play the best competition. In September 2018, we officially blessed and opened the new turf field in Chatham and our students have been actively using the renovated field daily in Summit. Thanks to our generous donors, we are able to continue providing our student-athletes and award-winning athletics program with safe and competitive playing surfaces.
