MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT I recently joined the Oakhill family as Director of Development. A few things struck me the first week.

The Oakhill mission of knowing and valuing each student is absolute. The attention to detail exemplified through the care and concern for each student by our faculty and staff shines through each and every day. Oakhill students are loved like they are our own - while they are at Oakhill, and even beyond, after they graduate. We are proud of them.

The care and concern isn't just for Oakhill students. Faculty and staff treat one another with kindness and compassion. They're always willing to lend a hand and a smile. I've never worked with such positive people!

We are a school of excellence, which is embodied by our students and by our faculty and staff. We are a very special community. We are a family. This is the Oakhill way and it sets us apart.

2021-2022 FINANCIALS Maintaining a balanced budget is critical for independent schools like Oakhill Day School as it ensures financial stability and sustainability. A balanced budget also allows the school to meet its financial obligations and make investments in the future. Without a balanced budget, Oakhill may face cash flow problems, significant cuts to programs and services, or in extreme cases, schools like Oakhill face closure when they cannot maintain a healthy budget.

With the community's support of Oakhill's fundraising efforts and additional revenue sources that include Auxiliary and Summer Programming, the school can maintain a balanced budget allowing it to provide a high-quality education to its students, attract and retain talented faculty and staff, and invest in facilities and technology to enhance the learning environment further.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Happy Birthday, Oakhill! We will be celebrating our 75th anniversary in 2023! It is an honor to lead such a prestigious institution, one with a solid foundation and a mission that has lasted the test of time! Wanda Lee Kalsu would be proud!

After 15 years of leading Oakhill Day School, I believe this was one of the best enrollment, community, culture, climate, and philanthropy! Although COVID continued to dictate many school procedures during the first three quarters of the school year, this fantastic faculty, staff, and community found a way to make it all happen better than ever! Assemblies, buddy families, panther parties, after-school classes, athletics, clubs, PTO activities, Booster Club events, and fundraising events such as the Fashion Show, Golf Tournament, and Havana Nights Auction at the Curtin Estate all went off without a hitch!

A talented and determined Admissions Department, a strategic marketing plan, a solid financial roadmap, and excellent ancillary revenue streams resulted in recordbreaking Admissions inquiries, retention, and a phone ringing off the hook. Our budget allowed for improvements to Oakhill's facilities, programs, and curriculum.

The healthy budget also allowed for the addition of necessary personnel. The Kids Club program, summer program, after-school classes and clubs, and facilities rentals brought quality services and revenue streams that led Oakhill to a successful 21/22 school year.

Oakhill experienced outstanding philanthropic support from our community. That support includes a record-setting Annual Fund (The Mighty Oak Fund), a highly profitable virtual silent auction and in-person live auction at the Curtin/Libbey Estate, where the ambiance was unmatched, and another successful Golf Tournament. We raised $250,000.00 for a new playground for the entire student body.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL We increased our number of major donors and welcomed new donors to the table. Our community truly stepped up, which helped us meet our Development goals for the fiscal year.

As a school with no endowment or significant cash reserves, we continue to find a way to thrive. As we plan for the days, months, and years ahead, we continue to add budgeted money to our PPRRSM (Provision for Plant Replacement, Renewal, and Special Projects) account. This account is set aside for emergency plant repair or facilities-related special projects. We will continue to grow this account each year, ensuring deferred maintenance does not hinder our future goals and plans.

Thank you for your continued support and trust in Oakhill. We will continue to make all of our decisions on behalf of the students and in the school's best interest; to balance educating our children with running a six-million-dollar business.

BECAUSE OF YOUR SUPPORT Because of your support, Oakhill stood out in the classroom, on the field, and in the community, as new programs started and tried and true programs flourished. It took the support of the entire Oakhill Community to make the 2021-2022 school year a success. Below is just a sampling of all the great that came out of a school year when the community came back together to learn, play, and celebrate the Oakhill spirit.

2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS Oakhill Day School celebrates 75 years starting fall of 2022.

2021-2022 was the inaugural year for Oakhill’s Upper School programming for grades 9 - 12.

The school has seen strong enrollment in academic and summer programming and increased community support in fundraising efforts.

Oakhill’s Middle School teamed up with Van Ibsen to put on a fantastic stage performance of Willie Wonka for two sold-out shows!

For the 5th consecutive year, Oakhill students have participated in the State MathCounts competition.

2021 - 8th Grade Parochial “B” League Champions in Girls Volleyball and 2021 - 1st place Small Class (Parochial League).

Oakhill serves an integral part of its local community, offering resources and support to families, educators, and other community members. Oakhill greatly benefits from community members volunteering their time, expertise, and resources to support our mission.

Community support also helps increase the visibility and reputation of Oakhill. It has been vital in maintaining the school's longstanding 75 years of providing excellence in education to the greater Kansas City area.

PTO FUNDRAISING With the profits from the Carnival, Red Barn Farm, Holiday Hoopla, Mother/Son and Father/Daughter Dances, PTO raised over $10,000 to give back to the students at Oakhill. PTO purchased the following items to benefit all of the students: Main building classroom signs to match the south building Two new lunch tables for the main building Reindeer for The Holiday Thing event Performers and programs for the entire student body throughout the year

MESSAGE FROM THE PTO PRESIDENT My first term as Oakhill Day School PTO President made me grateful for this community. The pandemic has taught me change is a constant when adapting to new environments and embracing new opportunities. I continued to be humbled by the wonderful parent volunteers that step up to help with our events in positive and fun ways! We began the year with bringing back our Annual Carnival in a hybrid form, keeping the popular food truck idea and offering some fun lawn games and raffle baskets. The return of in-person Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day was blessed with seeing many new and familiar faces in the building for the first time in two years. The excitement flourished with the addition of a Fall Book Fair, Farmer’s Market, and continued at Red Barn Farm in Weston. We successfully hosted over 30 local vendors for our 3rd Annual Holiday Hoopla in November that also brought back our fun make and take gifts area for kids. We look forward to expanding and continuing this tradition next year.

I am most thankful to our wonderful Room Parent volunteers that graciously help plan and execute three inperson classroom parties and helped with appreciating not only their respective classroom teachers but additional faculty throughout the year. Our Room Parents also helped our Annual Auction organize classroom baskets that had a very successful outcome at the Havana Nights auction.

The spring semester saw an awesome 80s themed dance party for all our parents and students at our annual Date Night dances. The highlight was the amazing light up dance floor that paired well with the 80s music that reminded me of Friday nights at the roller rink with my friends. PTO also brought back the end of year picnic at Linden Square with hot dogs, lawn games, and popsicles. This was the perfect end to a great year. I look forward to another year working with the best volunteers and staff!

VALUE OF VOLUNTEERS Where would we be without our volunteers? Giving back is one of the ways we fulfill our mission at Oakhill. Parents and grandparents volunteer on a regular basis to help out at events and in the library.

We had nearly 100 parent and grandparent volunteers to help with everything from events to day-to-day needs. Our middle school and upper school students completed over 1,800 volunteer hours throughout the Kansas City Metro area.

The presidential service award recognizes United States citizens who have achieved a minimum of 50 hours of service over a 12-month period. By the end of their school career, our middle school students will have earned 45 service hours and our upper school students will have earned 100 hours.

The following students were recognized for going above and beyond that goal - earning at minimum one volunteer hour per week.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY Oakhill Day School is known for its positive and safe school climate, interpersonal relationships, and family-like atmosphere by the students, parents, faculty and staff, and alumni community. ODS prides itself on doing what is best for the student, which allows all students to feel important and included.

Working in tandem, the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and Oakhill host events throughout the year which are highly attended by families. These events include, but are not limited to: PTO Carnival, Global Celebration, Grandparents’/Special Friends’ Day, Red Barn Farm, the ODS Experience, holiday parties, music performances, field trips, field day, annual auction, Spring Fling and book fairs.

We pride ourselves on our experiential education through overnight trips too! This year we took our 7th and 8th graders to the Badlands in South Dakota, our 6th graders to Horseshoe Canyon Ranch in Jasper, Arkansas and our 5th graders to Hutchinson, KS and Wichita, KS to visit the Cosmosphere, Salt Mines, and Sedgwick County Zoo. Each year, the National Junior Honor Society plans and organizes three school wide service projects for all of the students to participate in. In the 2021/2022 school year, we worked with the Northland Christmas Store, KC Pet Project, and Jewish Vocation Services.

ODS strives to build school spirit and unify the student body through Panther Parties, Reading Buddies, recess with multiple grade levels, and after-school Kids’ Club.

CATWALK COUTURE Oakhill Day School's first fashion show fundraiser was a tremendous success, raising over $10,000 to support student programs and initiatives. It was not only a financial success but also a social one, as it brought together current families, faculty, and alumni, rekindling their connection with the school community. The event showcased the creativity and talents of Oakhill's students and gave alumni an opportunity to see how the school has grown and flourished since their graduation. The success of this fundraiser is a testament to the strength and vibrancy of the Oakhill community.

ACORN DAY Acorn Day is a special day to celebrate our facilities' natural spaces. Oakhill has been developing the Living Lab since 2019.

Our goal in 2022 was to continue to develop the Living Lab by incorporating seating, shade, and additional observation stations.

We envisioned a meeting area where students could sit for class discussions and collaborate on hands-on outdoor projects.

Every K-12 student visits the Living Lab for curricular tie-ins and community activities. In the fall of 2021, 8th-grade students planned and completed an investigation of the plant vegetation to explore the population dynamics of key wildflower species. They found that Oakhill supports approximately 380 milkweed stems per acre, meeting the statewide goal of supporting Monarch Butterfly Habitat. The Living Lab also provides middle school and high school students a place to serve their community. This year, 31 students performed over 205 service hours in the Living Lab.

COMMUNITY IMPACT - FUNDRAISING EVENTS

HAVANA NIGHTS SILENT & LIVE AUCTION Oakhill Day School held its Live Auction fundraising event at the Falcon's Nest Estate in the Kansas City Northland on Friday, April 29, 2022. Pablo Sanhueza & Kansas City Latin Jazz Orchestra and live painter Anthony Oropeza entertained one hundred fifty guests. Tanna Guthrie did a fantastic job energizing the guests to raise their bid paddles. Oakhill hosts its auction event annually to raise funds that help the school grow curricular offerings and maintain its facilities. Before the Live Auction, a virtual silent auction event kicked off the fundraising festivities. The event in total raised over $200,000 for the students of Oakhill.

COMMUNITY IMPACT - FUNDRAISING EVENTS 2022 HELEN WILLS GOLF TOURNAMENT The Helen Wills Golf Tournament is a beautiful tribute to a beloved teacher and a successful fundraiser for Oakhill Day School.

This event, held annually, helps to raise important funds that support the school's programs and initiatives while also honoring the legacy of a cherished member of the Oakhill community.

Staley Farms Golf Club hosted an amazing day on the green for over 30 teams ready to spend the day golfing for the students of Oakhill.

MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI COORDINATOR As an independent school, we take pride in not only providing a top-notch education to our students but also in fostering long-lasting relationships with our alumni. Our alumni are an integral part of the school community, and we are grateful for their continued support.

We are so excited to have more and more of our alumni entering adult careers and coming back to share their time, talents, and expertise with the school. Our alumni are growing up! Many of our alumni attended Oakhill at younger ages and for a few years at a time to students who graduated from 8th grade. Our first graduating class was in 2010 and those students are now finishing up graduate degrees and out in the working world. Our 8th grade graduates headed to public and private schools all over the Kansas City area, including our Upper School program, PRIME. For the first time, we had our young alumni attend our annual auction. It was great to see Brianna Ely and Brady McCanles reconnecting with past teachers and raising their paddles to support Oakhill.

For the second year in a row, our young alumni attended the golf tournament. Alex Diaz, Anthony Giordano and Brady McCanles enjoyed their day together on the golf course and look forward to adding another team next year.

The number of alumni working at Oakhill Fully Charged summer camp grew to record numbers. Alumni Taylor Clevenger ('10) runs the program and has done an amazing job recruiting and retaining our alumni. It never gets old to see familiar faces!

FORWARD TO THE FUTURE 2022 COLLEGE GRADUATES BEN BECKER Ben graduated from Mizzou with a BS in Business Administration with an emphasis in Management and a Minor in Construction Management.

He will be joining the family business, Luke Draily Construction.

HARRISON FEASTER Harrison graduated Magna Cum Laude with from TCU with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and Business Information Systems.

BRADY MCCANLES Brady graduated with Honors from SMU with a BBA in Finance and a minor in History.

EVAN MORRIS Evan graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelors of Science and Chemical in Biomolecular Engineering.

He is currently a banking analyst with the energy group at Texas Capital Bank in Dallas.
