Gazette celebrates 100th edition A big crowd of supporters came to the Masonic Hall in Gisborne on September 17 to celebrate the paper’s 100th edition and ninth anniversary.

They were entertained by the Gisborne Singers who, as always, were in top form.

Eddie Gardiner read a wonderful poem he created to tell the story of the newspapers that have served the town for more than 150 years.

You can read Eddie’s poem on page 24.

Siggy Thiner of Colour of Earth catering with Jane and Yvonne provided a constant service of delicious finger food throughout the evening.

Louis Bokor, representing the Calder Fly Fishing Club, presented the Gazette with a cheque for $200 in appreciation of the Gazette regularly publishing their articles.

Kids Corner FROM the Editor’s Desk with Bryan Power

Milestones Last month saw the Gazette reach two milestones: its ninth anniversary and its 100th edition. When the Gazette commenced in September 2006 there were many who doubted that the paper would be a goer. In fact, one business approached to be an advertiser declined with the comment, “You’ll probably be a one issue wonder”. All connected with the paper are proud that the Gazette has never missed an edition over those nine years and has grown to be a much appreciated local community paper. This month’s front page records the celebration of these milestones at the Gazette’s annual reception on September 17.

Business Excellence Awards Congratulations to local award winners in the Macedon Ranges Business Excellence Awards.

The Excellence in Accommodation Award was won by Braeside Mount Macedon Country Retreat; Gisborne’s Bluegum Electrical Solutions took out two awards: Excellence in Customer Service and New and Emerging Business while one of the Gazette’s long-time contributors and sponsors – The Gallery, Mount Macedon – was the winner of the Excellence in Events and Attractions award.

Football and netball is over...

The Gisborne and Macedon Clubs had competitive winter seasons with a number of their teams making the finals. The most successful for Gisborne were the A Grade Netballers who reached the preliminary final while for Macedon the women there too were to the fore with the A Grade team going down in a hard-fought grand final. At the Junior level the Gisborne Rookies had their usual strong showing with two premierships to their credit.

Another success for girls was the effort of the GSC junior girls football team in reaching the grand final of the state-wide interschool competition. Well done to them!

...Cricket is back And now to cricket, where girls will be catered for in a new initiative detailed on page 32. Youngsters will also have the Milo program to introduce them to the game. The Gisborne and Macedon clubs will be fielding teams keen to do well and we shall follow their fortunes with interest over the season.

Burning off restrictions lifted during October All residents are encouraged to start cleaning up their properties earlier this year in preparation for an earlier and longer fire season.

During October, burning off restrictions will be lifted for people living on less than 4,000 square metres (one acre). Residents must ensure that when burning off they do not create a nuisance for their neighbours. Large loads of green waste (excluding noxious weeds) can also be tipped for free at Council transfer stations.

Roadside slashing will begin in October, a month earlier than usual, starting in the areas of the shire that dry out the quickest, usually the north and east. Council’s Fire Management Officer will begin inspecting private properties for fire risk in mid-October, and Fire Prevention Notices will be issued to properties that pose a serious risk to their neighbourhood.

Councillor’s Column with Russell Mowatt For the rest of 2015 and beyond, we face many challenges as a Council and a community.

One of these challenges is rate capping being proposed by the State Government, which will restrict Council’s ability to raise its own revenue.

How rate capping will be shaped and formed by the Essential Services Commission and implemented by the State Government is the big question for our community’s future development.

It is a reasonable assumption that when money is taken out of the local government sector over the long term there is a risk to providing some future services, capital projects, asset renewal and intergenerational equity.

Without adequate income to meet community expectations, our council and other councils in our region will not be in a financial position to deliver all the services our community expects and the projects we have planned for in the future, especially when our population is experiencing significant growth.

We are also nearing the end of the Management Review for the Hanging Rock Reserve by the State Government and my view and Council’s position has always been the importance of securing Hanging Rock’s future financial and environmental sustainability. Whatever the State Government decides will be one of the biggest challenges for Council.

With the looming rate capping combined with the absence of an ongoing and guaranteed income source, I hope that the State Government review will result in a fiscal model for Hanging Rock that will ensure funding beyond the current four-year million dollar grant from the State Government.

John Marsden to speak at Dennis Long Family Benefit Night Dennis Long was an active and much-loved member of the Bullengarook community and The Mount Players Theatre Company.

He died tragically in December last year, leaving his wife Meredith and two young boys, Nathan and Danny, over whom they had legal guardianship.

has been organised as a celebration of the contribution that Dennis made to the two communities, and also to raise money for the future benefit of the boys.

To be held in Jubilee Hall on Saturday October 10, the event is a dinner dance with a two-course meal by well-known caterer Siggy Thiner, and dancing to

7pm, and the CFA will present a certificate to mark Dennis’s 38 years of service.

The Gisborne Festival Committee will be hosting an Open Garden Day at Duneira on Sunday October 18 so do get along and support them while enjoying the beautiful gardens, with the bluebells expected to be in bloom.

Solar bulk-buy scheme launched

Emma, Stacey and Meaghan were among the the audience who packed the library on September 23 to meet Rosie Batty and to hear her talk about her book A Mother’s Story.

On the following day she joined the Prime Minister when he announced $100 million towards tackling the scourge of family violence.

Gilligan Recreational Reserve holds AGM Gilligan Recreation Reserve on Millett Road, South Gisborne, is a public community space.

The reserve is shared throughout the week by user groups South Gisborne Tennis Club, Funtastic Tennis Coaching, Distinctive Options Disability Services and locals using the playground and barbecue facilities, riding horses, walking dogs and generally enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

There has also been further interest from

other user groups including a Tai Chi group, book group and playgroups.

Ongoing plans include a walking/exercise path through the tree plantation and further beautification of the area.

Students from Newham Primary School attended an award ceremony at Government House in Melbourne on August 31 for the Landcare Awards.

It was an amazing experience for the students to be part of this event and meet the Governor of Victoria, Linda Dessau, AM. The students were amazed at how many groups and projects were represented at the awards and were delighted that their project in the Junior Landcare category was highly commended.

“We will keep up the great work and hope to come back next year and win the award,” said Newham PS student Sydney.

Lots happening at Lancefield The Lancefield Agricultural Show will be held at Lancefield Park on Sunday October 18 from 9am to 4pm. Also in Lancefield, there will be a week-long event – Extinct: Lancefield Megafauna Festival – from October 18-24, in celebration of local findings of bones of megafauna. Gisborne/Macedon Ranges Sub-Branch of the RSL has lifted the bar again at this year’s Anzac Appeal, raising 25.6% more than in 2014. It played a significant part in reaching the state’s total of over $5 million.

A survey of Western Water customers has shown satisfaction with the water corporation’s services overall remains high, with Gisborne customers giving a rating of 8.3 out of 10.

Great days at Kyneton

Gisborne CWA

Once again Macedon CWA members joined Kyneton and other branches at the Daffodil Festival CWA Fair in the Kyneton Masonic Hall on the weekend of September 12-13.

A great mix of craft, cooking, plants and “trash & treasure” and more as well as traditional CWA lunches and teas were enjoyed by the many customers. There was much fun and fellowship enjoyed with members from across the area. Thank you to Kyneton CWA for the opportunity to participate in this great day.

Macedon CWA has welcomed another new member, as have other branches in the Central Highlands Group. This recognises the contribution CWA makes in the community.

Our group has been busy with participation in the Kyneton Daffodil Festival with a craft stall. Another event was the Cup Cake Decoration Demonstration at Trentham CWA. We welcomed a past member Anne who was visiting from Western Australia.

Seniors Festival runs through October Seniors: Your time to enjoy

Seniors Week Book Groups

The 2015 Seniors Festival will feature events across the shire during October.

A range of activities from book clubs to bowls, croquet to card games – even a picnic in the park – are being offered by local groups and organisations.

Members are busy retubing the boiler on one of our steam engines, courtesy of a grant we received from the Gisborne & District Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. Other members are continuing to beautify our grounds and representing our club at various exhibitions and events around the state.

Our Men's Breakfasts are held about 8.30am prior to the working bee and we have been fortunate to have enjoyed a wide variety of guest speakers.

Windarring says thanks for Gisbus The Gisbus is a wonderful community service that enables Gisborne Windarring participants to travel independently from their day service to Dalray House for their respite weekend.

Jack and Emma T also use this service to and from the Gisborne railway station to travel on the train independently.

The September meeting of Friends of Red Cross was a high fashion affair with a parade of new summer outfits supplied by Kay’s Fashions.

It was a delight to see so many members and guests enjoying the afternoon.

Four of our members modelled the outfits and it was fun hearing the comments as each new style was paraded. As usual our members provided a sumptuous afternoon tea. As a result of the event, $500 was donated to Red Cross projects.

At our October meeting on Friday 2 we will be having a cuppa and a casual chat so please come along and join us at 1.30pm.

Members are reminded that we are having our end of year break-up with a Christmas lunch on November 6 at the Coach and Horses Inn, Clarkefield. Anyone who needs to pay may do so at the October meeting.

Woodend Lifestyle Carers Group The group, which counts Gisborne residents among its members, recently invited Leading Senior Constable Jeff Larsen and Senior Constable Sam Cubley to a Crime Prevention forum to discuss ways of ensuring the safety of seniors.

Problems faced by those suffering from the early stages of dementia involved traffic, home safety and cyber safety.

The importance of surrendering driving licences due to the dangers of altered reaction times, poor reflexes and diminished understanding of traffic conditions was discussed, and it was pointed out that insurance cover is voided after an official dementia diagnosis.

While seeming to cover a lot of doom and gloom, members were delighted to meet with Victoria Police and the forum ended with delicious home-made scones and cup cakes. A very worthwhile exercise.

Donate your unused nappies to collective

The weather is finally starting to turn, and it’s an open invitation to get out onto your bike.

Despite the sunny skies, cyclists still feel nervous when approaching blind and narrow parts of the road.

Sometimes it’s difficult to be aware of vehicles behind you. Wind can play havoc on a cyclist’s hearing and the eyes on the back of helmets are only to deter magpies (and they don’t work for that either).

Recently I encountered just such a situation. The driver of the Mawson’s Concrete and Garden Supply truck, however, slowed down – and waited the few seconds until there was clear vision around the corner.

It’s just one example of recent courtesies we’ve seen – but do you know how much we appreciate it? It certainly made my day. I was keenly looking for the first opportunity to let this driver safely pass.

So we from Bike Safe Macedon want to say thank you to every driver who pays us this consideration and helps to keep us safe. A thousand times – thank you!

This will be the second year of our Mums Clothes Swap. It was a massive success last year, such that we have opened this event to the wider commu-

ADFAS members saw how London’s Changing Skyline affects its inhabitants when international expert Anthea Streeter spoke at a lecture in Kyneton on September 17.

For those with UK visits in mind, the lecture proved better than a tourist guide to London’s most famous buildings.

At the end of 2014 the Gisborne Branch of the Bendigo Bank kindly provided our club with a grant. As part of the arrangements the club now has an easel within the branch that displays our current bimonthly competition winning images.

With two sections to each competition – ‘Open’ and the ‘Set Subject’ – each image will be on display for a month before being changed over. We thank the bank for providing this opportunity to spread the word (or image) about what our fantastic club does and the activities we get up to.

Singers seek help with war memorabilia The Gisborne Singers are collaborating with the Ballarat Choral Society for their next production, The Armed Man – A Mass for Peace, to form an 80-person choir, accompanied by 20 professional musicians. This is to be performed at Ballarat on Sunday November 15 and at Woodend on Sunday November 22 (St Ambrose Church Hall). Both performances start at 3pm.

This is a stunning work by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. He charts the growing menace of a descent into war and ends with hope for peace. The innocent victims of war are commemorated in its text regardless of race or creed. It is an exciting work both to sing and hear in concert. The work is presented in recognition of the Gallipoli landings in 1915.

The Armed Man was commissioned by the Royal Armouries in Britain to mark the transition from one millennium to another. It reflects the passing of "The most war-torn and destructive century in human history"

and looks forward in hope to a more peaceful future. It was first performed in the year 2000. It is essentially an anti-war composition based on the Catholic Mass combined with other texts including the 15th century French folk song L’Homme arme, the Islamic call to prayers (Adhaan), excerpts from the Mahabharata, as well as from the writings of Rudyard Kipling, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Sankichi Toge.

We are considering projecting images of war photographs onto a screen behind the choir. We are also considering reading messages from soldiers in the various war zones to their families at home in Australia.

We hope to use local material for both ideas.

SHOWS AT KYNETON TOWN HALL Have a spring fling with the arts at the Kyneton Town Hall The Kyneton Town Hall hosts a dynamic program of arts and culture events throughout October, with burlesque, cabaret, dance, music and drama to spice up your spring.

Kicking off with the cheeky, riotous and revved-up cabaret Caravan Burlesque on Friday, October 2 at 8pm, Moira Finucane and her exotic band of Caravan artistes are set to shock and inspire.

Spring’s program also features the poignant exhibition Melancholia during Mental Health Week from Tuesday, October 6. Young Voices to sing 'Across the Pacific' Young Voices of Macedon, with a membership of 30, are busy preparing for their annual concert this month.

Across the Pacific will be held on Sunday October 18 at 2.30pm at the Church of the Resurrection, Macedon. The program includes a wide variety of songs from Australia, New Zealand, South America, USA and Canada.

The Madrigali group will also perform

two madrigals from the 16th century.

The choir sang with the Anglican Parish of Gisborne Choir at the dedication of the memorial organ at the Church of the Resurrection in May and more recently sang at a family service at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Woodend. Plans for the remainder of this year include performances at local farmers’ markets and at community carol celebrations.

Local girls dance towards top Melbourne Academy of Irish Dance is thrilled with the results of three local girls, Darcy Teese, 8, Grace Kalinowski, 11, and Erin Sumbler, 16, at the Victorian Irish Dance Championships held in August.

All three girls placed third in their respective age groups in 2014, and all three have jumped up to second place in 2015! Their teachers Conor, Alison and Louise are very proud of their hard work, dedication and improvement over the past 12 months.

Secrets for Film Society

Who doesn’t love a good twist in a film?

Members of the Macedon Ranges Film Society were amply rewarded in this regard with the September screening of The Secret in Their Eyes, a 2009 film from Argentinian writer/director Juan Jose Campanella.

Woven throughout the plot of drama and intrigue is a tender love story with emotions that took over 20 years to be acknowledged.

In October, 1944 film To Have And Have Not, based loosely on an Ernest Hemingway novel, is the choice of the club.

This tribute to Lauren Bacall who died last year was the first film role for the actress, aged only 19. Her powerful performance is opposite Harry (Humphrey Bogart), a small-time fisherman who, in 1940, is tempted to take part in helping the French Resistance smuggle people onto the island of Martinique.

Enter “Slim” (Bacall), who is an equal match for Harry in every way.

Macedon Ranges Art Group ready for show Well over 100 works of art by Macedon Ranges Art Group members will be on display and for sale at this year's spring art show. Demonstrations by member artists painting in oils, acrylics and watercolours will be a daily feature of the exhibition.

The official opening will be on Friday evening October 30 with the show open from 10am to 4-30pm Saturday October 31 and finishing on Tuesday November 3.

Local renovators launch new book Local identities Marie and Dominic Romeo of Karori, Mt Macedon, launched their new book, The Constant Renovators, at the Trading Post on September 10. Dominic and Marie specialise in passionately renovating historic properties around the state and the book features many of the bestknown properties they have worked on.

Karori, their current home, was renovated over the past few years and brought what was one of the last almost intact hill station properties and its garden on Mount Macedon back to its former glory. Before that, there was Rupertswood mansion at Sunbury. This was perhaps one of the couple’s most significant renovation learning curves, completed while they were also restoring a former home, Burnewang Homestead, with its 35 rooms, near Elmore, just north of Bendigo.

“After we had restored Burnewang, we thought we could take on anything!” said Marie.

Two other old properties that the couple have worked on at Mt Macedon are Timsbury and Benue Lodge, another heritage hill station property with three acres of garden.

In several towns in Germany we came across these cobble stone-sized memorials known as stolperstein (‘stumbling stones’) on which are recorded the names of people who were victims of Nazi oppression. The stones are laid in the footpath outside the person’s former home.

German artist Gunter Demnig created this initiative and by 2014 there have been 48,000 stolpersteins laid in 18 countries across Europe. The lower stone reads: "Here lived Selma Frank born 1914. Deported to Krasniczyn (a village in eastern Poland). Murdered."

Marie Duggan lived virtually her entire life in Gisborne. Marie was born at Blackburn on 24 April 1928 and was the second child of Frank and Mary Duggan. In 1929 the family moved to Gisborne where Marie spent the rest of her life.

She attended St Brigid’s school and one year at Gisborne State School, passing her Merit Certificate.

At 14, Marie enrolled in an office skills course at Hasset’s Business College and later was offered a position in Gisborne with Lincoln Mills. She remained in this position up to the early 1960s when the branch closed.

Marie then accepted an office position in the Melbourne CBD but quit after a few days. City life was not for Marie! For a short time she worked for the Shire of Bulla in Sunbury and for the Shire of Melton. In 1964, Marie started with the Shire of Gisborne and the entire executive staff then consisted of the Shire Secretary and Marie. There she remained for the rest of her working life and retired in 1988.

Marie enjoyed the outdoors and developed a love of horses and from the age of five she rode a horse to school each day. As a teenager, she competed in pony club events in the district. She also enjoyed table tennis and square dancing.

Golf was a life passion and she was a member of the Gisborne Golf Club for over 50 years and played regularly until ill health forced her to retire around 80 years of age. When lawn bowls came to Gisborne, Marie became involved until ill health prevailed. With all her sporting interests, Marie accepted positions on committees and was also secretary of St Brigid’s Parish Ball committee.

Marie travelled extensively in Australia and had trips to Europe and Asia and enjoyed cruises to Pacific destinations. She was devoted to her nieces and nephews and always interested in their achievements and activities. Marie is survived by a sister, three brothers, 13 nieces and nephews and 24 grandnieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was offered at St Brigid’s Catholic Church, Gisborne, on August 27 followed by a burial at the Gisborne cemetery.

The Macedon Ranges Health Centre is delighted to be hosting a Mental Health Service Expo on Wednesday October 14 from 6pm to 8pm.

There will be a number of providers outlining their services. This is an opportunity for the general public to meet with the services available in our region and find out how to access them. Service providers will also be able to discuss cross-referrals.

The president of PS My Family Matters, Tamara Wilson, said “I hope that the community engages with this expo and comes along to explore the services and resources available when it comes to mental health.

We all know someone who will need to access these services at some time and knowing where to go and what is available is vital. This is a unique opportunity to have all services come together in one place to share knowledge."

Laura Hansen has joined Macedon Ranges Health as our new speech pathologist and Laura is delighted to be working in the Macedon Ranges, an area she grew up in.

As an avid reader Laura enjoys helping young children discover a love for reading, as well as improving their language and speech skills. By making all therapy sessions fun and enjoyable, using games, making books and using crafts, the child’s self-esteem and confidence are promoted. Laura tailors each session to the individual’s interests and needs to help promote their natural love of learning. She also focuses on children’s strengths and Laura Hansen sets goals that will be attainable.

In setting goals Laura takes a holistic approach, with consideration given to the wants and needs of the family, teachers and other staff and professionals involved.

Laura has a passion for working with children, enjoys the preparation and planning of sessions and the excitement of seeing children learn and develop.

The Falls Prevention Program at the MRH Centre starts on Friday October 16. The program combines physical activity and education sessions, aiming to improve your balance, reduce your fear of falling and provide you with the knowledge required to reduce the risk of falls.

Open at last – Men's Shed celebrates What a Grand Opening we had! A beautiful day, a big crowd, an inspiring special guest and topped off with another lovely donation from the GREAT Gisborne Gazette.

Before the official opening ceremony, many of the guests were acknowledged and welcomed. It started with the Shedmen being asked to raise their hands because without them The Shed wouldn’t be opening nor would those present have partaken in a tasty barbecue. Next came: ● Members of other sheds in the shire and the Shire CEO Peter Johnston and Councillor Graham Hackett, as the shire facilitates some co-ordination of all the sheds in the shire, with particular reference to safety management. ● Phyllis and Ian Boyd, Graeme Millar and Bryan Power from the Gazette, which is a generous sponsor of our Shed (hence our official name). ● The staff, management and board of Macedon Ranges Health for provid-

ing the building, associated services and making us feel such a valuable part of the MRH team. ● Our local MLA Mary-Anne Thomas, noting that a significant proportion of the cost of fitting out this shed has been funded by a state government grant. ● Our special guest, Australian Men’s Shed Association Patron Professor Barry Golding, who is widely known and respected throughout the international Men’s Shed movement.

Macedon Ranges Health CEO Don Tidbury then spoke about the importance of men’s health issues and why the organisation facilitates our Men’s Shed. He also thanked the Shedmen for the work they had done and their no-fuss approach to running The Shed.

Finally, Professor Golding spoke on the history of Men’s Sheds, explaining how they fulfil a man’s need for ‘somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to’. He also mentioned that while Australia is at the forefront of this rapidly growing movement with over a thousand community sheds, there are now 258 sheds in Ireland, 180 in England and 42 in Scotland, and other countries are adopting the

philosophy. He concluded with some very complimentary remarks about the organisation and fit-out of our Shed and was then handed a chainsaw to cut the cake!

As regular readers of our Gazette column know, we had been shedless for quite a while. Has our new Shed been worth the wait?

Gisborne Oaks is in a celebratory mood after Macedon Ranges Health won the 2015 LASA – Small Provider – Award for Excellence. This is a State Award so there are lots of smiles all round. The residents received a very nice invitation to a beaut party that residents and staff enjoyed.

The town folk of Gisborne should be very proud that Gisborne Oaks won this award for excellence. Further proof that the residents at the Gisborne Oaks are getting the very best of care and attention – so to each and everyone of our wonderful staff, a big “Thankyou”.

Residents went to the Kyneton Town Hall for a show called “Back to Broadway”, a most enjoyable fastmoving musical; then we went to lunch at the Kyneton Bowling Club (best fish and chips)! This is a great way of catching up with friends. (Staff member) Jan’s mum travels all the way from Corowa and it is always a pleasure to see Jean.

At the Elms, residents were entertained by Ricky Lee with a toetapping afternoon (honky tonk was on the program), and a nice gent comes and plays the piano and sings.

The Men's Shed had its grand opening so we are looking forward to seeing some works of art.

Residents are very lucky to have good volunteers and I will tell you about two of them.

Monica conducts Meditation and the residents enjoy the quiet and relaxing manner that this group session provides. Another is Colin’s Melodies.

The piano-playing is a pleasure and residents can be seen smiling as they think happy thoughts, so a big thankyou to our volunteers.

The Colour Run is on again (see details opposite page). Last year it was a great success so register now and have some fun.

Bike ride 'from sun to wind' The Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group is on a mission to inform the government and the community about renewable energy. It also likes to celebrate with the community and on Saturday October 31 there will be a bike ride to do just that.

The group is working on a number of projects including a large solar installation at the Black Forest Timber Mill near Woodend and a community wind power project.

President Ralf Thesing said: “We believe it is important to get these projects moving along because climate change is upon us and action is needed now. A bike ride is a great way for our community to express its support for these initiatives.”

The ride will begin at the Black Forest Timber Mill and travel to the site of the proposed community wind farm nearby. The 15km round trip will finish back at the mill.

Historic Gisborne property neglected Gisborne’s oldest property, Macedon House, is being left to rot as it falls between bureaucratic cracks. The historic former hotel is heritage listed but although this gives the building state protection, the organisation tasked with that protection, Heritage Victoria, is without sufficient resources to force any action.

Macedon House has been shut up and disintegrating since 2005, when a proposal for a retirement village on the site was refused. The two principal problems were zoning and design. The property changed hands last year and is now owned by Macedon House Estates P/L, whose sole director is listed as Brian Forshaw of Melbourne.

On September 4, a Heritage Victoria representative said that Macedon House was last inspected about two years ago. She said it was on Heritage Victoria’s radar, and that the owners had advised they were in “ongoing discussions” with the council.

However, a council officer said there was nothing in the Macedon House file to suggest any action or discussions regarding the site. There was nothing further to the original 2005 proposal. The officer said that Heritage Victoria was responsible for the property.

The building is regularly entered by vandals. Images seen by the Gazette show a broken wall at the rear of the house. The interior walls are covered in graffiti.

Holes have been smashed in some walls and the floors are covered in smashed glass. The exterior walls have patches of render missing and show signs of movement Pip Butler and cracking.

Jacksons Creek exercise loop People wanting to exercise in Gisborne’s beautiful outdoors will appreciate new distance signs on the paths along and connecting to Jacksons Creek.

Thanks to a grant from Gisborne & District Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank, Friends of Jacksons Creek recently posted signs with directions and distances at 0.5km intervals along a 4km return Jacksons Creek Exercise Loop. The loop starts in Rotary Park opposite the Bowling Club and goes all the way to Dixon Field.

Friends of Jacksons Creek chairman David Tunbridge spearheaded the project with the aim of encouraging greater community participation in walking through the extensive path network along both sides of Jacksons Creek. He hopes the new signs will encourage walkers to go that extra bit.

Branch manager Susan Tresidder said the branch was delighted to support the project which would benefit many in the community for years to come.

Vision Australia re-elects committee The Gisborne Auxiliary held its Annual General Meeting in September and the former office-bearers were re-elected.

Tricia Kaye continues as President and Elaine Millar as Secretary/Treasurer.

Vision Australia Liaison Officer John Poke presented Appreciation Certificates to all members and thanked everyone for a great team effort. He also spoke about the White Cane Lions International Day to be held on October 15 and demonstrated the use of four different canes; the long white one is used by people who are blind or visually impaired. White Cane Day is observed worldwide to recognise the movement of blind people from dependency to full participation in society.

Elaine Millar Our next major event will be a stall in the Village Shopping Centre for a week from Monday October 26. There will be a hamper raffle and Christmas cards and calendars will be for sale.

Macedon Musings with Melanie Fattore It’s great to see sporting clubs working together, and I saw that first-hand a few weeks ago when the local cricket and junior football clubs, as well as the Auskick fraternity, joined forces to clean up the long neglected clubrooms at Clifford Reserve in Greene Street.

En masse, unwanted items were purged — thanks to the council for the massive skip — and minor repairs undertaken before the pressure washers and mops were allowed to ply their trade.

My husband loves attacking grime, so he was in his element.

Local painter Kevin Reeves then waved his magic brush over the whole precinct — thanks to the council for chipping in with the paint — and it’s now as pristine as an F1 garage. Congratulations to all concerned on a massive effort.

Recently I contacted my telephone provider and had my fixed telephone line disconnected. The main reason being that both my husband and I have mobile phones and with a little adjustment we find we are able to use them a hundred percent of the time thus doing away with the need and expense for a home phone.

This action started me thinking and remembering life in 1970 when we first moved to Bullengarook. The phone lines in those days went via the Bullengarook Post Office and it meant that one was at the mercy of (what seemed to us) the Post Master-General Department’s antiquated rules and regulations. This allowed the exchange to close at 6pm and not reopen until the following day, meaning no night phone calls. Weekends were subject to separate rules and I found by experience that if a telegram arrived late Friday it would not be delivered until Monday. However the beauty of having a phone line available in the country (as we were then) was a boon to families.

We never in our imagination considered the time when we would have something as small as our mobile phones that would enable us to contact the world in just about any place or at any time we desire.

Thus moving to a rural area with the worry of isolation has been removed. I know we complain of black spots, flat batteries and misplacing our phones, however these problems are minute when compared to not having any contact at all. What must it have been like prior to the telephone? Can you imagine the younger generation reverting to that time? Heavens, people may be forced to speak to each other face to face, and games would be played with a human opponent.

This however is a topic for another day!

Margaret was awarded the prize as the choir member who had sold the most tickets to one of the choir’s major concerts. The award was made

by Richard Whiteley on behalf of the Gazette and was one of a number of recent Gazette awards initiated as a way of returning funds earned by the Gazette to the community.

South Gisborne residents talk about ideas for community hub Sixty-one people attended a public meeting in Gisborne last month to hear about a proposal for a community recreational hub in South Gisborne.

The conveners, a group of residents with young families, talked about their vision of a place that would serve to connect the local community, and asked for the views of residents.

One of the conveners, Inky Barwick, spoke about the history of South Gisborne and the infrastructure that used to exist – school, post office, pubs etc.

She talked about a proposal for a multi-purpose community hub focused on a community hall and playground, and

possibly low-key cafe; a place for local playgroups, community meetings and functions, and informal local gatherings to be held, something similar to the Bullengarook Recreation Reserve. Possible sites canvassed included Gilligan Reserve, home of the South Gisborne Tennis Club on Millett Road, and the I R Robertson Reserve on Couangalt Road.

Residents at the meeting were largely positive about the idea while recognising there were many hurdles to such a proposal getting off the ground.

Record falls for St Brigid’s pupil Last month at St Brigid’s everyone was very busy. Several students competed at Coburg in the interschool athletics, with seven making it through to the Division stage.

Congratulations to Jamie G for setting the state record in the 100m sprint for the second year in a row, with a time of 12.3 seconds.

One of the highlights of the month was the senior’s camp in Canberra. After a 6.30am departure from school, we arrived 10 hours later at the Bush Capital Lodge.

We toured the National Portrait Gallery, the High Court, Questacon and the Royal Australian Mint, where, as you read this, thousands of coins are being made.

We visited the War Memorial where two students laid a wreath during the Last Post ceremony.

Parliament House was very interesting as we got to meet Rob Mitchell, our local representative for McEwen in the House of Representatives. We thank him for being very generous with his time and convincing the security guards to let us into his office!

We were also lucky enough to meet the Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, in person, and visit his enormous house where there are 22

Bugs abound at Mount Macedon Last month Mount Macedon Primary School students were completely immersed in our school production ‘Bug Boogie’.

We practised and rehearsed it all term and we performed it four times in the last week of term.

There were lots of groups of all sorts of bugs for each class. The grade sixes were crickets and ladybugs, the 4/5s were mosquitos, butterflies and Christmas beetles, the 2/3s were bees, the 1/2s caterpillars and the foundations little bugs.

It was fun for everybody and we had some really funky costumes, like the crickets’ legs and the Christmas beetles’ fairy lights.

Many of the parents loved it so much that they came twice!

Also, aside from the production, our month has still been extremely busy and active. Our old outdoor assembly area has been redone with artificial turf and we are planning for a complete refurbishment of our art room to turn it into an Arts Centre.

Our school choir, The Warblers, recently went to the Beat Concert in Kyneton and did really well, performing two songs: London’s Burning and Everything is Awesome.

We all look forward to everything that is coming next term!

Spelling bee buzz swoops Gisborne Literacy and Numeracy Week was celebrated with some new events this year, including our own TV-inspired spelling bee, the classroom book theme challenge, an author visit/workshop from Dee White and a numeracy playground scavenger hunt. The culminating parade made a stunning return, inspiring a sea of colourful characters and representations. Minions made their first appearance at the 2015 edition, joining many mythical and mysterious creatures dating all the way back to a sizeable ‘Wizard of Oz’ brigade.

Recent fundraising efforts have been, in equal parts, creative and beneficial. Student artwork is appearing on cards, calendars, diaries, phone cases and even pillow cases.

While this will support our own programs and facilities, children also showed outward generosity with ‘Coins for Vietnam’. The trail of silver and gold (or more precisely copper, nickel and aluminium) raised almost $800 to support the education of students in communities with limited resources.

Thirty of our Grade 3-6 students progressed at the recent District Athletics carnival. At the Divisional event, qualifiers were Alannah (discus and shot put), Emily (800m and 1500m), Eleanor (800m), Emma B (200m), Izzy (hurdles) and Shane (triple jump).

New Gisborne writers at work I was as excited as a child in a lolly shop. On Friday August 7, 20 students from New Gisborne Primary School were given the chance to attend the annual Bendigo Writers Festival. We caught the morning train from Gisborne to Bendigo, wondering what writing tips we would learn and which published authors we might see.

Some of us were lucky enough to meet the one and only Susan Green, author of three successful novels – Verity Sparks volumes one, two and, of course, three.

Before she spoke we had eight authors come out for a kind of quiz/ questionnaire. I can remember John Marsden, who is an amazing author, because he had a great sense of

Afterwards we went to a songwriting session.

Lastly, on the train trip home we made a quick stop for something to

eat as we were all starving. All that writing must have made us hungry.

Overall it was a great day.

Newham PS rocked by science experiments Science Fair Day On the August 21 Newham Primary School hosted a Science Fair. The Grade 4, 5, and 6s showed their experiments to other classes and parents. The main idea was to make an experiment that represented a natural disaster and its effects.

The experiments were displayed on tables outside.

There were erupting volcanoes, earthquakes causing buildings to topple over, tsunamis destroying villages and pandemics on agar. The audience watched as every student presented their experiments.

All students learned how to present to an audience and keep them entertained. Everybody put in 100% of their effort towards their projects which could be seen from how well they presented.

High School Musical a huge success The week of September 7-10 saw our production of High School Musical take place at the Boilerhouse Theatre in Sunbury ... and what a huge success it was for Bullengarook Specialist School!

Our secondary students did an amazing job, really stepping up to demonstrate what fabulous young people they are.

Over dress rehearsals, matinees and evening shows they wowed the crowd with their tremendous dancing, singing and performing skills, continually raising the bar higher as the week went by.

The smiles on faces showed how experiences such as this can be lifechanging for our students and the confidence they gain from performing is wonderful to see.

It was fantastic to see the crowd getting so many laughs and tapping their feet in time to the very catchy songs.

Huge thanks to all of the staff as well, who have given up countless hours of time and effort to get it all together.

Busy term winds up at Holy Cross Third term is always busy and this year was no exception!

It has been lovely watching the Preps find their confidence and consolidate their learning.

They have been busy preparing and planting out the vegetable garden as soon as spring arrived!

They had some wonderful help from our parents and are looking forward to a crop of sweet strawberries and snow peas next term!

It was also nice to see lots of dads come and enjoy a special prayer gathering prepared by our Preps for Father’s day.

The Grade 1/2s had an excursion to the Melbourne Aquarium as part of their unit investigating different habitats.

They also looked at the school dam to research the habitat of our yabbies!

Grade one children enjoyed their activity night at school and the grade two children looked a little tired on the last day of term after sleeping at school!

We finished the term by celebrating our Feast day with a special paraliturgy and all classes enjoyed learning Zumba!

GISBORNE SECONDARY COLLEGE

Extra money for Performing Arts Centre Gisborne Secondary College will receive $50,000 towards the construction of its new Performing Arts Centre in addition to $78,000 for general maintenance.

The news, announced by Member for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas, was enthusiastically received by the school’s VET students who worked hard to design a sponsorship program for the centre – of which Ms Thomas recently became a patron.

“This extra $50,000 is fantastic news for students and families of GSC,” Ms Thomas said.

“The finished centre will provide a welcome home for the school’s performing arts talent, not to mention a great venue for lectures, presentations as well as corporate and business events.”

The $78,000 will be used for urgent maintenance needs across the school.

Year 11 VCAL students who helped design the sponsorship program for the Performing Arts Centre, which is being created through extensive rebuilding of the school’s old gym. It will offer 256 theatre seats, suitable acoustics, retractable projector screen and lighting, a green room, a bio-box and a high-end audio-visual suite.

VET students visit SALT music studios Seventeen students had the opportunity to travel to Salt Studios in Brighton where they participated in a variety of activities including being recorded in the main studio, a lecture on the history of recording music, learning about recording and mixing techniques, and creating a soundtrack to a short movie.

Part of VET (Vocational Education and Training) is the expectation that students participate in industry-based placements. The students saw how a professional studio operates and met several engineers who have over 30 years’ experience in the industry.

Junior girls make grand final in state AFL competition Congratulations to GSC’s junior girls (Years 7-9) AFL team who were runners up in the Victorian state championships, going through the entire competition undefeated until the Grand Final on August 26.

They beat Wonthaggi Secondary College in the semi 62-13 before meeting Rowville in the Grand Final. It was a close contest up until half time but in the second half Rowville were too good. It was a very physical game as both teams gave all they had. The final score was 114-39.

In their nine games the girls scored 400 points and only conceded 143. They are extremely proud of their achievements. To be runners-up in the state championships out of 400 schools is an amazing effort. The College could not be prouder of their achievement as it is the furthest an AFL team (boys or girls) from the college has reached.

The team was captained by Madison Presparkis who, at just 15, is in both the Under 16 and Under 18 all Australian Girls team and a member of the Vic Metro and U/18s Calder Cannons girls’ squad. The team was coached by Trent Kennedy (PE Teacher) and Eshe Lane who plays for Gisborne Youth Girls and received runner-up in the league’s best and fairest. Eshe also plays for Vic Country and U/18s Calder Cannons Girls’ squads.

This month the Year 12 students are frantically preparing for their end of year exams. Before these exams however, we first need to go through our end of year celebrations. For the Year 12s, this means a day where we are able to go to Bullengarook, where there are various rides and other activities for us to have our last hurrah as a cohort. After that day, it will be all about last-minute study and final preparations for our exams.

For our college leaders, these will also be the last days of their reign. Therefore, the college is currently inundated with campaigning posters for those nominating for 2016 school captains, with voting and interviews also taking place.

Because a large number of the Year 12 students are already 18 and beginning to get their licences, the year level attended a safe driving and alcohol workshop that was eye-opening and beneficial for students on the cusp of adulthood.

This month the Year 7 students go on a camp to Lady Northcote where they will learn initiative skills.

The building projects that have been under development over the past 12 months are nearing completion, with the new Performing Arts Centre almost complete.

The community is eager to reap the benefits of this outstanding facility.

Then Eric rushed to set the type The columns and the tray He said he never had enough Hours in his day.

Then came a GREAT idea A very clever notion To resurrect the old Gazette The wheels were put in motion.

All placed upon the giant press Where town kids learned the caper How to balance on a box And fly the printed paper.

Sounds simple when you say it It’s all been done before OK – hands up those who want to be The Gazette’s first Editor.

Worth thinking for a moment How well they all were taught Mid rollers, cogs and swinging arms No hand was ever caught.

1st Gisborne Scouts mix community work with pleasure Foodbank Donation Drive

Cub Camp at Noonameena

For the third consecutive year, 1st Gisborne Scouts collected food items for the Kyneton Caring Community Foodbank. The Foodbank whose stocks run low in the winter months benefits many families in the Macedon Ranges District.

Thirty-five cubs and 11 leaders spent a fun-packed three days at Noonameena Scout Camp near Kyneton.

Cubs learned how to collect and purify water, follow trails, pitch tents and bake pizzas in their own home-made cardboard box ovens.

On the Father’s Day weekend in September Scouts from 1st New Gisborne had their “Barringoree” camp at Tree Tops campsite, Riddells Creek.

Six Cub Scouts who were about to “Go Up” to Scouts joined the older Scouts as they made a dusk hike from Barringo to Tree Tops. These six Cub Scouts were all approaching 11 years of age and had finished their “Link Badge” program, preparing them for their new world of Scouts. The “Going Up” took place on the Saturday afternoon and involved the six Cub Scouts crossing a tightrope bridge built by the Scouts.

The next day all the Scouts hosted a Father’s Day breakfast for their fathers.

After this they all walked the short distance to the beautiful outdoor Chapel for the traditional “Scouts Own” service.

1st New Gisborne Scouts meet at Gisborne Church of Christ in Saunders Road, New Gisborne, on Wednesday evenings at 6pm for a “gold coin donation” dinner. Duneira Fundraiser

Macedon Scouts visit Air Wing To work on their Aviation badge, the Macedon Scouts went on a tour of the Victoria Police Air Wing at Essendon Airport in September.

They saw police and ambulance helicopters, visited the air traffic control tower, and checked out some executive jets. There was lots to see and learn and the Scouts made serious progress on their badge work. Macedon Scouts would like to thank Ben King for organising the fascinating visit.

Seeing the police helicopter was one of the highlights of the Macedon Scout Group’s tour.

The 1st New Gisborne Scout group will host a Duneira Open Garden at Mt Macedon on October 17. This will be a fun-filled day with families in mind. What a great time to get out to enjoy these gardens this spring. Open from 10-4 pm.

Entry price is $10 for adults and children under 16 are free. All funds raised will go to 1st New Gisborne Scouts.

There will be a sausage sizzle, refreshments, fresh fruit, warm scones and icy poles to buy for a small cost. A children’s treasure hunt will be conducted on the hour from 11am. And so that you don’t think we have forgotten the adults, an all-important coffee van will be on site! Come and join us to experience the magnificent heritage garden at Duneira.

Street parking only in Officer Lane outside the grounds, however parking for the disabled is available on the grounds.

Grant for 1st New Gisborne put to good use Scouts at the 1st New Gisborne Scout Group were delighted to receive a recent grant of $1000 from The GREAT Association, allowing the Troop to buy four patrol boxes in which to keep their camping equipment.

The first of the patrol boxes was presented by GREAT President Graeme Millar and Secretary Graham Dickinson to Patrol Leaders Cooper Watts and Grace Walker.

The boxes were used for the first time on the scout camp at Tree Tops, Riddells Creek.

Gisborne Garden Club

As luck would have it...

The bus trip planned for the Gisborne Garden Club in mid-September proved to be a great success.

Departing Gisborne at 9am our first stop was the Melton Botanic Gardens where we had morning tea, enjoying the hospitality of the “Friends of the Botanical Garden”. This group has been responsible for the ongoing development of the extensive area, being reliant on financial grants from council, government and private sources.

Two guided tours of varying duration followed, with the longer and more comprehensive occupying over an hour of brisk walking, and both being very interesting and informative. A beautifully served lunch followed at the historic Eynesbury Homestead after which we travelled to the Blackwood Ridge Nursery to indulge the ever present need to fill one or two empty spots in the garden!

The club was started 27 years ago as a friendship group with a common interest in sharing both gardening knowledge and plants (when available) and that ethos still prevails. Meeting on the second Wednesday of the month – generally between 1pm-3pm at various venues – we are regularly welcoming new members and visitors. Hi Everyone, This month I would like to tell you about a pleasing landscape effect in my own garden, Shepherd’s Bush at Mt Macedon.

When we bought the property there was an overgrown with Chris Williams excavated area in the middle of the garden. As it turns out, this area was the site of the old Victorian homestead that burnt down in the 1983 bushfires. Amongst all of the blackberries and other weeds on the embankment there were a few patches of the dense, compact groundcover called Lithodora diffusa. It flowers in spring, a very bright blue.

We eventually cleared all of the woody weeds and blackberries away and we were left with a very sunny embankment with natural rock outcrops. We had left the drifts of Lithodora and over time it started to self seed in the bare soil.

Soon after I started working at Bolobek, I propagated quite a number of the common white daisy known as Anthemis cupaniana that were growing under the Birch walk. Anthemis, like Lithodora, is a compact dense ground cover, and bears clear white flowers over soft feathery, silver foliage.

I took some of the Anthemis cuttings up to Shepherds Bush and planted them on the embankment with the Lithodora.

Both of these species thrived on the well drained, sunny embankment and as luck would have it they flower at precisely the same time! For around six weeks we have the most pleasing effect outside our kitchen windows. Where there were once only weeds we now have garden gorgeousness and it didn’t cost a cent!

You’ll normally see this bird on the ground feeding on seeds and, when disturbed, it will rise quickly with a loud whirring noise and make for a nearby branch. Its breeding season extends from this month until January.

Daly Friends take trip to Government House We were honoured to be nominated in the Victorian Landcare Awards and were very proud to go to Government House for the presentations, where we were lucky enough to meet the Victorian Governor and present her with a sprig of Acacia dealbata to wear to mark Wattle Day. At Daly Reserve, the orchard area plans have been displayed at our working bees, AGM and in flyers, and they have been very well received. The heritage fruit trees are looking much better after their restorative pruning and the water pipes will be installed shortly.

We are happy to be involved in the Gisborne Biolink Project. This initiative will contribute greatly to the amenity of Gisborne while highlighting the benefits of conservation and respect for our precious environment.

We are working to ensure Public Conservation and Resource Zone is applied to Daly Nature Reserve at the next available opportunity.

Although the weather’s been cold, the team has been far from idle. We recently planted a number of bare-rooted trees and we have harvested our winter crops, which have been donated to community organisations. With spring now finally upon us, we’ve been particularly busy, getting ready for the growing season.

In mid-September, we had a “Spring into Spring” day: preparing beds, weeding, planting, forming paths and generally having a great time working together in the garden, as well as sharing some excellent pizzas from our new wood-fired oven.

On October 24, we’ll be hosting Western Water’s Garden Days, featuring garden expert Stephen Ryan.

It will be a great day of activities and gardening information. The 1st New Gisborne Scouts will be providing lunch as a fundraiser. Not to be missed by any garden lover!

Revamped BMX track is ready to go

Local youngster meets basketball legend Australian basketball legend Andrew Bogut has shown aspiring young basketball star Mitchell Grabham the ropes at the Mac Pack Basketball Super Clinic.

The 12-year-old from Gisborne was one of more than 500 children to win a place at this year’s clinic held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) in August.

Mitchell had the chance to show his shooting, passing and dribbling skills to Mac Pack ambassador Andrew, one of Australia’s NBA stars, and a host of other NBL and WNBL players.

Mitchell was thrilled to Playing with Ausreceive a few tips from tralia’s national team Andrew Bogut. during the American NBA off season, Bogut was instrumental in helping the Boomers qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He said the clinic was a great chance for him to share his tips and tricks with young kids who loved the sport.

McDonald’s Gisborne licensee Tim Westover said the Mac Pack Basketball Super Clinic was an example of commitment to supporting junior sport.

The Friends of Jacksons Creek received a grant from Macedon Ranges Shire Community Funding Scheme which made it possible to bring in special dirt and machinery to create a new and more challenging BMX park beside the skate park in Gisborne.

Spokesperson for the group, David Tunbridge, said the previous track was created about 15 years ago with minimal planning or imagination in design. As a result, the track had been rarely used. The upgraded track is suitable for a variety of age groups including younger children and encourages family engagement.

“The project is about getting people to the park,” David said.

The next October working bee will be on Sunday October 18, meeting under the bridge at Station Road.

It would be great to get a few extra hands for just an hour or so from 10am to clean up a small amount of blackberry, dead branches, overgrown tree branches, some graffiti and rubbish build-up. A job for everyone and everyone for a job.

Great year for MR Netball Association

The Mount Macedon Golf Club AGM was held on September 1 and the club continues to go from strength to strength. Membership numbers have again increased.

New members are sincerely welcomed.

During the year numerous initiatives have resulted in noticeable improvements on and off the course. Some of these include new bunkers around the first tee, sprucing up of the amenity of the clubhouse and a major commitment to providing top quality greens. The new long-term lease/ licence arrangement with the Commonwealth offers a level of certainty MMGC has long sought.

The Macedon Ranges Netball Association has just completed its first season at the new courts in New Gisborne. With over 75 teams, and more than 700 junior netballers from our local towns, it was an amazing sight on Saturday mornings.

We welcomed teams from Kyneton, Woodend and Lancefield, while our current clubs from Gisborne, Macedon, Riddells Creek and Romsey continue to grow. This year saw the introduction of the Rep U11 and U13 teams into our club competition. They played in an age group above and showed great develop-

Gisborne Tennis Club winter presentations On August 22 the Gisborne Junior Tennis Club had their winter season presentation with many players returning to the club after their last-round matches to see if they would win an MVP trophy for their team or win one of the GREAT Gisborne Gazette Sportspersons awards.

The sun shone for the occasion and a large crowd gathered in anticipation, with hotdogs in hand.

Walking on Wednesdays appeals to many walkers The Gisborne Bushwalking Club offers at least one mid-week walk a month as an alternative to the regular weekend walks.

The Wednesday walks are of a similar style to the weekend walks and are popular as an extra or as an alternative.

On a cool Wednesday in September, Laraine and Elizabeth led 17 club members, including three new members, from the Trading Post at Mt Macedon onto the “Teaspoon Track” (named some

years ago by the club after an inventive Leader signposted the track using a blue plastic teaspoon). They stopped at Days Picnic Ground for a lunch break then enjoyed a warming climb to the top of Mt Towrong with fabulous views over Gisborne and as far as Mt Bullengarook. They finished back at the Trading Post for a well-earned afternoon tea and the new members voted it a great Wednesday walk.

When weekends are sometimes needed for “essentials”, the Wednes-

‘Alisterus Scapularis’ – a Victorian creek. But which one?

September saw the start of the season for salmonids in Victorian rivers and streams.

After some winter months of “hard fishing” in nearby lakes (our day “fishing blind” on Harcourt Reservoir only yielded two small fish) members are looking forward to a season’s stream fishing in flowing water.

We are also excited about being able to cast to trout sighted rising to the spring hatchings of insects on our lakes.

On opening day Chris Shrueder and Mark Hobbs caught (and released) a dozen good pan-sized trout while fishing using Mark’s Pilchard Nymph pattern on a nearby creek.

Surprising them was a rainbow that glided purposefully up to engulf Mark’s large foam cicada indicator being used to suspend the heavy tungsten nymph.

Many fly fishers keep their best locations to themselves, however Chris shared the location in his report to members, albeit cryptically, writing that it was “a small river near Melbourne

Gisborne Soccer Club has many players from all over the Macedon Ranges and competes against strong clubs in soccer’s heartland of the western suburbs of Melbourne. Traditionally it has often been hard work competing with these clubs who have many more players and larger resources. But with a growing population bringing more players and a dedicated group of coaches and managers, things are looking up!

Gisborne Soccer Club fields three junior girls’ teams in Under 9s, 11s and 14s and nine junior boys teams from Under 8 to Under 13 and has now started to field teams

in higher grades.

They also have a miniroos program for younger children that over 60 kids attended this winter season.

Junior Membership numbers increased nearly 50% this year.

Soccer Club President Rod Smith commented “Soccer is getting more and more popular and it’s a great sport for both boys and girls.

We’re lucky to have a number of grounds at Dixon Field and we’re looking forward to having new clubrooms built in time for next season. So we have plenty of room to grow.”

What a great couple of weeks it has been. We have had some amazing spring weather giving up a taste of what is to come.

The magpies are swooping and the sun is starting to peek out. Under these lovely conditions four of our junior teams fronted up on a Saturday morning in September to participate in the grand final play off. A2 and C1 both came out premiers with A3 and C2 runners up.

Congratulations to these teams for an amazing effort throughout the season and to all teams and clubs from the Macedon Ranges for providing the opportunity for

such a friendly comp.

The social committee of the Macedon Tennis Club ran a trivia night on August 22 which was a huge success.

Lots of fun was had throughout the night in an atmosphere brimming over with the wit and intelligence of the trivia participants.

Personally I was not on top of my game that night, but next year...look out! We raised some much-needed funds to put towards new lights for courts 7 and 8.

Summer junior teams have been selected and start play in term four. All other comps are playing well. Happy hitting!

Running Club’s Start Running Program attracts big following It’s been a busy start to spring at Macedon Ranges Running Club.

At the end of August and the start of September MRRC branches in Gisborne, Kyneton, Lancefield and Romsey, Macedon, Riddells Creek and Woodend warmly welcomed plenty of new runners and returning members to begin their 5km eight week program.

On completion of the program all participants will come together at Gisborne Dixon field on Sunday October 25 to celebrate their first milestone with a 5km run. Family and friends are also encouraged to support the runners’ achievements.

Petanque season under way The Petanque competition season is now under way.

There was no better start for Mt Macedon Club than when six members travelled to the Mitchelton Winery for a Triples Tournament put on by Nagambie Petanque Club.

In a beautiful setting beside a lake in bright sunshine, Bridie Kinghorn (who is going to represent Australia as a junior) teamed up with her parents Alison and Lindsay to finish in second place out of 21 teams from seven Victorian clubs.

The other team from our club – Peter Chaldjian, Doreen and Danny Green – achieved a creditable fifth place.

Competitions are held most weekends somewhere in Victoria. Mt Macedon Petanque Club is holding its Open Triples Tournament on October 11. Why not come along and see top petanque

The Gisborne Cricket Club season is ready to fire up with the Dragons ready to field more teams and have more players than ever before. Jarryd Vernon was recently announced as new club captain and will lead the McIntyre Cup side with coach Simon Harman.

Jarryd has won the past three club championships and we look forward to a great season from him and the rest of the team. The first game is against old rivals Sunbury United on October 10.

Futsal comes to The Stadium

The Stadium, Gisborne Secondary College

Futsal comes to Gisborne The Stadium, which opened in April at Gisborne Secondary College, offers a range of programs and activities such as basketball, netball, Metafit fitness classes and Futsal.

Futsal Registrations for Macedon Ranges Futsal (5-a-side indoor soccer) are now open. The summer season starts on Monday October 5 and for the first time includes a girls’ and women’s competitions.

First-time players are welcome and will be placed in a team if unable to form a team with friends.

Gisborne Ladies Golf

Gisborne Thunder strikes again It’s been another busy month at Gisborne Thunder Swimming Club with 10 swimmers qualifying for the Short Course Country Championships in Ballarat.

All swimmers achieved personal best times. Gisborne Thunder swimmers with coaches Laura Congratulations to Darcy and Stephanie at the Ballarat Short Course Country Frew who came third in the Championships.

Club members hail the opening of the season.

Croquet players fight bitter weather Our numbers were down and the weather was foul but what a great opening to a new season. The National Anthem resounded loud and clear and the Australian flag flew high too. Sadly our club champion was delayed so runner-up Barb Snibson ran the first hoop. We were delighted to have Gazette editor Bryan Power present to record the event.

We are an intrepid lot at Macedon Ranges so we ventured out in the rain to play our first games for the season.

There was lots of ducking for cover so

it was no wonder we pulled the pin and called an early lunch. A huge thank you to Ros Anders for once again providing a fabulous array of sandwiches. It was at this time that I was finally able to present Penny Krstev with her gold mallet badge.

If you are free on Wednesday October 21 at 10am, come down to Dixon Field and have a try at this great game. This will be our contribution to Seniors Week.

Now that our season is off and running I wish our pennant teams good luck and Margaret Wardell great croquet.

August saw the start of the Interclub Challenge between five local clubs. The format is match play with teams of five players whose handicaps are between 15 and 35. This competition is to encourage ladies to play golf in a different format. After four rounds Gisborne was in second place needing a win at Riverside against Melton. They achieved a narrow win and won the overall competition on a count-back.

The Annual Trentham/Gisborne Challenge was held at Trentham this year. Thirteen Gisborne ladies had an enjoyable day in cool but dry conditions and were delighted to come away as victors.

Members were saddened to hear that Marie Duggan had recently passed away, aged 87. Marie was a Life Member of Gisborne Golf Club and was held in high esteem for her contributions to the club over many years.

Siblings head to Australian titles Isabelle (12) and Harry (10) Luxmoore will both be saddling up as members of the Victorian team at the Australian Interschool Championships to be held in Sydney at the start of October.

This is the second year in a row that the two Braemar College students have earned a spot on the Victorian team and will this year be travelling north with three horses.

Isabelle and her horse Regal Tiarnah have a very busy schedule as members of the Vic team in Horse Trials, Medium Dressage and Working Hunter classes, while Harry will also be kept busy riding both of his horses in the Combined Training and Preliminary Dressage.

The Reverend Deacon Wendy Elson was recently inducted into the Uniting Church, Macedon Ranges Partnership in August.

Rev Elson's induction took place at Kyneton Uniting Church and was led by the Chairperson of the Port Phillip West Presbytery, Rev Paul Blacker.

The Rev Mark Dunn delivered the sermon and the combined choir, led

by Rev Dr D’Arcy Wood, provided musical performances.

Rev Elson will be living in Woodend. Hers is the first of three new appointments the Uniting Church will be making in the partnership. The ministry appointments will be role-based and Rev Elson's primary role is to help the Church and the community to connect.

"This is an exciting new venture," Rev Elson said.

The partnership initiative has seen 12 congregations from across the Ranges – Romsey, Lancefield, Kyneton, Mia Mia, Metcalfe, Sutton Grange, Barfold, Tylden, Woodend, Mount Macedon, Riddells Creek and Gisborne – combining their resources, skills and vision.

Seasons: grief and loss Seasons – Grief and Loss

Seasons is a program specifically designed to assist adults experiencing significant loss in our community. It is a nondenominational program, run by trained volunteers and sponsored

by St. Brigid’s.

We all experience significant loss at one time or another in our lives. The experience frequently leaves people feeling alone and isolated, unsure or unable to express and process their feelings.

Adults responsible for others often have to put aside their grief to soldier on.

A recent participant in the program said, “I wanted to be with

St Brigid’s Parish my peers and needed to know others might experience similar fears. When I heard how others felt, it reassured me. Often my reactions were the same. I no longer felt so isolated.”

There are no right or wrong ways to grieve.

The program involves six sessions from mid-October. Each session runs for two evening hours per week and will be for a group of six to eight people.

Priscilla Shirrer and Beth Moore have great presentational style and their teachings are filled with encouragement from God’s Word. You will find us at 10.30am every second Friday and all women are welcome, no matter where you attend church, or even if you don’t attend church!

100 Years Ago From the pages of the old Gisborne Gazette October, 1915 Editorial – Australians and Conscription – Australians who are calling for conscription should pause to consider what conscription, which is really the corollary of militarism, means.

It appears to us that this is not a question in which a lead should be given by the self-governing Dominions. Conscription, if it comes, must come from the heart of the Empire, and even then its adoption by self-governing Dominions is not to be taken as a matter of course. Like a severe surgical operation, it is only to be resorted to at the last extremity. In other words, the present system of voluntary enlistment must be proved to be a failure before compulsory laws on the subject can be placed on the Statute Book.

Church of England–Confirmation in Gisborne Parish – On Sat. last, Dr Clarke, Archbishop of Melbourne, accompanied by Mrs Clarke, visited Gisborne and on the following day administered the rite of Confirmation at Gisborne and Upper Macedon.

The Archbishop said he would like to carry their thoughts further back than 1855, the year in which their church was placed in position. In 1836, Australia was a place very remote from England. It was then an Archdeaconery in the Diocese of Calcutta.

In 1847, Bishop Perry was placed in charge of the Diocese of Melbourne, which included the whole of Victoria. From England, three iron churches, which had been built in sections, were sent – one was the church at Gisborne, and another at Collingwood, was sold for £60.

Gisborne State School – The report of the Inspector for State Schools (Mr. J. Cross): A very good working spirit prevails in the school. All the subjects in the State school syllabus appear in the timetable and the time available is judiciously distributed among them. There are some old children in grade VI, but the present teacher is not in any way responsible; they are new scholars. In general the children are quite as far advanced as their ages would indicate. I have noted lessons in reading, grammar, number, composition, etc..

The children work neatly on their slates and books and their writing is of good and very good quality. The premises, building and equipments remain substantially as at last visit. New desks however have been obtained.

The suggestions as to the outside improvements have not yet been complied with but I understand the matter is likely to receive attention. There is a considerable amount of illustrative and decorative material in the school and everything is thoroughly clean.
