Anzac Day The Gisborne War Memorial was surrounded by a record crowd as young and old turned out on a grey day to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli.

As always, the Gisborne RSL, led by the President John De Lai, had prepared a fine program with the singing supported by the Gisborne Singers, the reading of letters of diggers from Anzac Cove by Matt Spargo, Peri Delany-Miller and Hannah Barker of Gisborne Secondary College, and the Anzac Day address delivered by former RAAF officer, Group Captain John Power.

Netball is booming

Another wonderful new local asset with its two basketball/netball courts is about to come into use this month. What a boon this facility will be, not only for the college but also for local sporting groups, particularly the basketball, netball and soccer clubs.

The dynamic Helen Gray is leading the creation of a women’s netball competition of 16 newly created local teams to play at the stadium. What a great initiative this is for local women to become involved in.

Steam Rally This annual event is a great outing for all the family. See page 6 for details.

Mother’s Day For an old bloke like me, fond memories of my mother still remain strong despite the fact that she died many years ago. Let’s always remember that mothers are very special people – and not just on this one day of the year.

Late last year Council formed a Health and Wellbeing Advisory Committee made up of a cross-section of residents shire-wide. This committee provides feedback on strategies and suggestions that come to the Council, looking through a health and wellbeing lens. We have met twice and feedback has been invaluable in helping to assist councillors in decision making and council officers with developing strategies with a health and wellbeing focus.

And, with football and netball seasons now in full swing, it is a timely reminder that the Macedon Ranges Shire Council is a smoke-free zone and we are proud to be so. Why? Because we walk the talk when it comes to promoting health and wellbeing.

We want our children to be smoke-free and play in smoke-free environments and we want to reduce cigarette butt litter. Please keep this in mind and advise your club members and clubs visiting our shire that the following areas are smoke-free: ● A 10-metre smoke-free zone around all children’s playground equipment in council parks and reserves; ● A 5-metre smoke-free zone around all councilowned, operated and leased building entrances; ● A 10-metre smoke-free zone around the external perimeters of all playing fields, sporting grounds and sporting facilities and council owned sporting clubrooms/pavilions; ● A 10m smoke-free zone around external perimeters of all outdoor events sponsored or run by council.

Restrictions on smoking in these zones are enforceable so please contact council local laws officers if you are concerned that smoking in these areas is still occurring. Remember it relates to any sport or activity that is connected to a council building, playground or sporting pavilion.

Gisborne digs deeper than ever $15,747 raised for Royal Children’s Hospital Residents and visitors to Gisborne had no escape on Good Friday as members of the Gisborne Fire Brigade and local Scout Groups came knocking at the doors of residents.

Bakers Delight and Brumby’s Bakery supplied hot-cross buns while Doonie's Diner supplied enough chips and potato cakes to keep the small army of volunteers powering through the day.

The Gisborne Fire Brigade was honoured to be joined by Professor John Hutson, the father-in-law of the Brigade secretary. Professor Hutson, who is Chair of Paediatric Surgery at the Royal Children's Hospital, said, “I was very happy to come along and show support for all the wonderful volunteers helping out with the appeal. The contributions that come in from regional communities like Gisborne are invaluable to the work of people like me at the hospital.”

A men’s health breakfast will be held on May 14 from 6.30am to 8am at Gardiner Reserve in Gisborne. Sponsored by PS My Family Matters and HALT (Health Assistance Local Tradies), the breakfast will feature speakers from the Gisborne Medical Centre and from HALT. “Even with so much focus on mental health and wellbeing, men, as a group, can be slow in seeking help when they run into issues to do with their own mental health,” the president of PS My Family Matters, Tamara Wilson, said. “This breakfast will enable local men to come together, to hear how they can enact some simple strategies to check in on their own wellbeing and who to talk to if they need some assistance.

"HALT, and its founder Jeremy Forbes, have been instrumental in raising awareness about men’s mental health and they have successfully run these breakfasts all around Victoria.”

The breakfast is open to all men in the Macedon Ranges. A free hot breakfast and coffee will be served.

News from Gisborne Kinder Prekinder Kookaburra/Platypus groups have settled well into their kinder environment at Grant Avenue Kindergarten.

We have been very busy making ourselves familiar with our surroundings by exploring and contributing to play. We have cooked up some incredible dishes using play dough, and have seen animal figurines such as kangaroos bouncing from nature play tubs onto pages of books to match with their pictures.

During outside play we have been building our confidence in climbing and being open to new challenges and discoveries. We also welcomed work experience student Lucy from Sacred Heart Georgia was looking forward to Easter.

On our last day of Term 1 we were photographed for our prekinder photos — sitting for the group shot was interesting as it was a bit of a challenge for our photographer to capture us all looking one way!

In the lead-up to Easter, we created Easter bunny ears and wore them proudly, with some of us hopping around. We finished the day with a special treat left for us by the Easter bunny.

Cut and Paste team Here's the happy team of Gisborne Primary School's Grade sixers who did the cut and paste of this edition and provided the Kids Quiz and Jokes Back: Hugh, Connor, Max M and Max R. Front: Lottie, Meg, Indy and Eilish.

Families visit Swinburne for Easter At the end of term Swinburne Avenue Kindergarten had a family picnic to celebrate Easter. The children and their families brought along some dinner and proudly introduced their families to their kinder friends.

After something to eat and a big play outside, the children gathered inside for some singing.

Upon returning outside the children discovered the Easter bunny had magically distributed some Easter eggs all over the Kinder yard! The excited squeals and enthusiastic screams may have been heard from the other side of Gisborne.

After lots of running, hunting, scrambling and shoving chocolate eggs in pockets and mum and dad’s hands to hold, and surprisingly some sharing of eggs, the children said goodbye for the Easter holidays.

After the Kinder holidays the children at Swinburne Avenue got right back into the swing of things with a visit from the Responsible Pet Program.

The pet educator visited with a very nice dog and the children learned about safety around dogs.

Parents also attended for part of the session to learn about pet safety which was a great opportunity.

■ Construction of the Gisborne Early Years hub in Robertson Street is expected to start in June.

■ Five businesses in Macedon Ranges Shire have volunteered to have their outdoor dining areas smoke-free. These businesses will receive signs and promotion, as well as Council promotion in newsletters and on social media.

■ Local employers are being encouraged to take on an apprentice or trainee as a way to bring fresh ideas to their business and keep young people employed in their community. Council held a free workshop in conjunction with VECCI and Worksafe on April 30, to give businesses an understanding of what’s involved.

■ Council is inviting livestock buyers and producers to contribute to the development of a strategy for the Kyneton Saleyards. A workshop will be held on Tuesday May 5 from 6.30pm at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute. The wider community can also contribute by attending a drop-in session at Kyneton Town Hall at 6:30pm on Monday, May 4. Everyone is encouraged to complete a survey at www.mrsc.vic.gov.au/ yoursay or in person at a Council centre.

■ In March, 19 men across the five Men’s Sheds in the Macedon Ranges completed Mental Health First Aid training. These men now know how to recognise when there might be a problem, and how to respond when something that started as a ‘friendly chat’ turns into a critical conversation.

Steam Park rally promises lots of grunt This year promises to be our Gisborne Vintage biggest event yet with more attractions in a larger display area. You will see live enterMachinery Society tainment on stage for the first time as well as camel rides.

The family will be entertained with the usual displays of old machinery plus the ever-popular tractor pull.

There will be market stalls, craft displays, an animal farm and children’s rides. See the old steam engines huff and puff and see a display of cars and trucks.

The popular miniature train rides will also be running.

Local community groups will be participating and exhibits such as the Liberator aircraft restoration group and the Dingo Sanctuary will also return as crowd favourites from previous years.

The annual Biggest Morning Tea for the Cancer Council will be held on Thursday, May 28, at St Paul’s Parish Centre (behind the church) at 10am.

Last year our group raised $650.

Every year the Cancer Council helps thousands of Australians affected by cancer and with every dollar raised we’ll be helping to support areas including research, health services, prevention programs and for patients and their families.

Firefighters see far too many preventable house fires every year and they can be heartbreaking.

Changing the batteries in your smoke alarm only takes five minutes but could be the difference

between you keeping your family safe or a devastating outcome.

If your smoke alarm is more than ten years old it should be replaced.

The CFA recommends that you test smoke alarms monthly by pressing

the test button with a broom handle; gently dust around the outside cover of your smoke alarm annually; replace your 9-volt battery at the end of daylight saving annually; and every 10 years, replace your smoke alarm units. When you do, consider installing 10-year sealed smoke alarms.

GISBORNE BRANCH There was a good turnup of members for our April 13 meeting with a surprise visit from Melva, a member who has now moved away from the area.

Our members have been busy making poppies for Anzac Day remembrance, and are also preparing their entries for the Creative Arts Exhibition to be held on May 16 at Sunbury Memorial Hall. The exhibition runs from 9am to 3.30pm. Come along and view all the wonderful craftwork: crochet, knitting, sewing, beading, cakes, jams, pickles etc. It’s a good time to catch up with ladies from the Central Highlands Group.

We have made plans for a trip away to Halls Gap from May 21 to 24 – a fun time is assured.

Craft ladies visit Macedon CWA on the third Monday of the month and learn new crafts or finish items already started.

‘Coffee, Craft and Chat’ is held at the meeting room next to the Gisborne library. The next meeting will be on May 18 from 10am to 2pm. We would be happy to see you at our craft sessions.

Special day at Macedon MACEDON BRANCH Easter, when we pause and think about the importance of the time we celebrate, is now gone.

Macedon CWA had a great Association Day at our hall when over 30 members and friends from Central Highlands region enjoyed the paLorraine rade of knitted fashions by Kouture Tweddle Knitwear. These ladies machine-knit beautiful items of and outstanding quality for all age groups at reasonable prices.

May will be busy with Macedon and Craigieburn branches co-hosting the Group Arts and Crafts Exhibition at Sunbury Memorial Hall, and several members will be attending the State Conference in Bendigo.

This year, Cameroon is our country of study, a most interesting but little-known place for most of us.

Our theme is Community, Connectedness and Creativity and Thanksgiving moneys go to Alzheimer’s and Dementia Research. Our social issues focus is on raising mental health and suicide awareness in our community.

Rotarians seeking cure for MS In 1989, after their son Jacob was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, local Rotarians Martin and Diana Taurins set out on a worldwide search to find a cure.

They were inspired by the success of Rotary International’s PolioPlus program which has now almost eradicated polio globally. Over the following years, through Rotary, they attended numerous international conventions to tell anyone who would listen about their dream.

The little project from Gisborne eventually grew into the Rotarian Action Group for Multiple Sclerosis Awareness, a global network which links Rotarians, health researchers and others around the world – all with the goal of finding a cure. This is quite a feather in the cap for Gisborne and the Taurins as among the 33,000-odd Rotary clubs in 200 countries around the world, there are only 24 such Action Groups.

To celebrate World MS Day on Wednesday May 27, we will be holding our annual MS Global Dinner at Fredricks Restaurant, Mt Alexander Road, Essendon.

Similar dinners are being held all around the world to share stories, raise awareness and campaign for everyone affected by multiple sclerosis. Bookings are essential – please contact Diana Taurins on 0419 564 389 for more information.

Bike Safe grateful for safety campaign

Our Pass with Care campaign that asked motorists to give space when overtaking cyclists has ended in the Macedon Ranges and Sunbury. Thank you to our partners, Macedon Ranges Shire Council and RoadSafe Central Victoria, who helped make our campaign a reality.

The Gisborne group of Friends of Red Cross held a Blume’s Fashion parade in March with the proceeds of $560 going to the Red Cross Calling Appeal.

This was then added to the wonderful Doorknock amount of $3500 so that $4060 in total was sent to the National Appeal.

Special thanks to all who donated in the Gisborne and New Gisborne areas when our 13 dedicated volunteers knocked on your doors.

Invitation to join New Gisborne Community Garden The New Gisborne Community Garden is located on Saunders Road beside the Church of Christ. It basks in the northern sun all day long, and there’s a great view of Mt Macedon.

Twelve raised garden beds inside a fenced area are currently growing vegetables and herbs. Two larger beds outside this area have so far had crops of corn and potatoes.

These beds are available for anybody to either establish an area of their own or join in with others.

A further area is to become a garden of local indigenous food plants. A group of indigenous people will assist with

planting this out in May. The Weekly Routine: At present, people meet on Wednesdays from about 9am to 11.30, when we have a cuppa and a chat, solving most of the world’s problems. If Wednesday doesn’t suit, though, people can come on whatever day is suitable to them.

Cost: Nothing really, except a donation of a gold coin for tea or coffee.

Perhaps a sore back.

Gisborne Genealogical Group held its AGM in March.

A new committee was elected with Tricia McLay president, Michele Pinti vice-president and Julie Dworak secretary.

Lorna Jackson remains treasurer and Lyn Hall librarian.

There are quite a few new faces on the committee this year. We welcome them, and thank all the outgoing committee members.

Leanne Goss received the ‘Member of the Year’ Award – and thoroughly deserving of this award following two years as secretary as well as helping with the roles of treasurer and newspaper editor.

After the AGM the group enjoyed a talk on mediaeval writing and wills given by Kathleen Neal. Kathleen has inspired many of us to have another go at reading old handwriting.

On Saturday March 28 a number of our members went to the State Library to have a look at the areas of relevance to genealogists then spent the remainder of the day doing their own research. Our outings are always an enjoyable day out and give members a chance to get to know each other better.

Our next meeting will be a Members' Discussion Night

on: ‘Dissolving Roadblocks'. It will be held on Thursday May 28 at 7.30pm in the Family History Room adjoining the Gisborne Library.

Friends of Jacksons Creek focus on blackberries

The year so far has been a busy and enjoyable one with a capacity membership of 120. A visit to the Hellenic Museum in Melbourne was very rewarding. It was amazing to see pottery and figurines dating back 8000 years to the Neolithic Age and to be able to trace the development Marg Cabassi of the arts to the present day. There was so much to marvel at, from the delicate gold jewellery to highly embroidered costumes. A remarkable exhibition.

A visit to Heidi Gallery of Modern Art in March provided the group with an insight into the history of the lives of John and Sunday Reed who supported Australian modern artists of the time. The gallery is dedicated to the presentation of Australian modern and contemporary art.

Over the next three months theatre bookings to Strictly Ballroom, Anything Goes and The Lion King are on the agenda. Also a 10-day Tasmanian tour, so lots to look forward to.

During April the friends kept up their attack on the blackberries in readiness for a plant-out in the next month or so.

Doug's use of his weed whacker impressed me enough to go and get our own to help make the job a bit easier. That, along with the new single-handed chainsaw donated by the GREAT Association, has further enhanced the storage shed of tools available.

While on tools: we have a mulching/shredder machine to sell. The unit was bought many years ago but has not had much use and otherwise takes up space in my shed.

If anyone is interested in buying it from FOJC, make an offer (over $300).

This month’s working bee will be on Sunday 24th; meet at the bridge in John Aitken Reserve at 10am.

Director of 'Crushed' visits film society The Macedon Ranges Film Society was pleased to have a film director present at its last meeting. The film, Crushed, was made and produced in Melbourne and director Ian Dixon visited Woodend for the screening. He explained to the group the inspiration behind the film and discussed some of the finer points of film making.

In May, the society will pay tribute to one of the comic greats, Robin Williams, who died in August last year. The Birdcage, the remake of the classic French farce La Cage aux Folles, is bound to bring tears of laughter to the audience as Val attempts to introduce his parents to his bride-to-be, a young woman who has been brought up in very protected circumstances. His gay father, Armand (played by Williams) and his flamboyant partner, Albert (played by Nathan Lane) try to make things go as smoothly as possible, but expect the unexpected.

This film will be shown on Wednesday, May 13 at 7.15pm in the Woodend Community Centre.

Film notes are supplied and the film is followed by supper.

1st New Gisborne Scouts 2015 started well for the New Gisborne Scouts. There are now more than 30 members and Wednesday nights are a big night at the Gisborne Church of Christ, home to the Scout Group.

Highlight of first term was our Group Camp at Anglesea with 20 Cub Scouts and Scouts, leaders and parents celebrating Founders Day on February 22 at the beach. We took our new Group camping trailer and our new Group Flag. They made all the difference!

The term ended with a big outdoors night. We farewelled a departing leader, had three Cub Scouts “go up” to Scouts, welcomed three “New Chums” and presented their white scarves and had one of our Venturer youth leaders “go up” to become an adult leader on her 18th birthday (Hannah Barker known as “Kaa” to the Cub Scouts). The Cub Scouts had to cross a rope bridge to “go up” and much fun was had.

The Group joined in the Anzac Day remembrance ceremonies in Gisborne.

Ask the girls who come each week. Charlotte has been a Guide for three years and says “at Girl Guides we play games and do Debbie lots of exciting activities. This includes Fleming cooking, singing, crafts, cultural games and learn about Guiding history. I love Guides because we have so much fun.”

Tahlia has only just joined the unit and is having a ball. She says “Guides is super fun. I enjoy every week. We learn about Guiding around the world and play games. I love Guides.”

In April girls worked on their Anzac Centenary badge which concluded with the parade in Gisborne.

Braemar's team to make the US trip.

School basketballers to compete in US Braemar College has been fortunate to be blessed with many talented basketball students over the years. This has led to entries each year in the National Schools’ Basketball Competition, in which teams from all over Australia and the Pacific region compete in December.

Our teams have been hugely successful in this competition, winning or placing as runners-up in more than five years of participation. Last December, in Canberra, our boys’ teams won the Under 20 competition and were runners-up in the Under 17 comp.

These teams will be travelling to America in December to play against high school teams in Texas, New York and the Carolinas. Most of this year’s team members play locally for the Gisborne Bulldogs Basketball Club and the two senior coaches also played for the Gisborne club when they were juniors.

This will be the fourth American basketball tour Braemar has run and the players are currently fundraising for the event. If you see the players selling raffle tickets at the Gisborne Market or other local events, please support them.

Team members who live in the South Ward are Jack Scanlon, Leon Thiner, Angus Street, Daniel Lowe, Nick Hanlon, Connor Dimasi and Lachan McAloney.

The highest thing on our list has been the making of 1000 poppies.

The ladies have been discussing patterns and new ways of making more poppies and the Oaks was beautifully decorated with them for Anzac Day. Everyone did a great job.

How did your Easter go? I would like to tell you about mine. My daughter Judith Betty admires one of the Anzac was coming for decorations at Gisborne Oaks. a few days from Queensland. I had organised a lovely few days, first to the cemetery to see Dad, then back to Gisborne for a lazy lunch where we could sit and have a good chat, church on Sunday then the market, on Monday a stroll around the zoo.

As a surprise my granddaughter Jessica and my great-grandson Harley arrived with Judith. After the cemetery Jessica asked if we could go to the shops for new shoes. James the taxi driver suggested that we go to Broadmeadows Shopping Centre. Jessica lives in a country town and a big shopping centre was a bonus; Jessica had trouble making up her mind as she entered one shop after another then back again. I'd forgotten what it was like shopping with a baby and young mum.

Next day we went to the zoo. Jessica did the same as the shops – from one end of the zoo to the other.

Then it was lunch time – I saw fish and chips; I pointed to them and said, “I will have them” but Judith brought back healthy sandwiches. By the time I took all the health out of the sandwich I was left with a cheese one.

On leaving the zoo we went to the gift shop. Judith’s worry was how they were going to take all of these things on the plane home. Don’t get me wrong, I love my family – but next visit there will be no going to the zoo!

Bushwalkers carry on over winter In April we took advantage of the weather and had some good walks, but we keep walking all winter, so there are three walks scheduled for May: Creswick forest on Wednesday May 6, Vaughan Springs on Sunday May 17 and one to an undecided area on Sunday May 31.

But the most significant event will be the meeting on Thursday May 7 at 7.30pm in the Gisborne SES building in Robertson Street, when our walks for the next six months will be planned.

We have made a real effort to minimise the number of meetings as we would rather be walking, but we do have just two a year to run the club and give members a chance to put any ideas they may have.

Chronic disease self management MRH continues to offer one-day workshops for people who have long-term health conditions including heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, asthma and respiratory conditions. Men's Shed blokes are moving in John Williamson sings about all Australian boys needing a shed … and at last we’re moving into ours! At least in spirit we’ve already moved to our new Lyell Street home. We took the most important things first including tea, coffee, sugar and the all-important drinking mugs.

Installing the rest of our equipment will take some time. Before we take anything much out of storage there’s a bit of modification and cleaning up to do. Just like at home, these things take time but we’re aiming to have enough done for the Life Enhancement Program to recommence late in June.

Healthscope Pathology has opened a collection centre at Neal Street Medical Clinic, Gisborne.

They are open from 8am to 12pm on weekdays. They will be expanding their hours in due course. You do not need an appointment to attend the collection centre. Healthscope has their laboratory in Kyneton and will aim to process most of their samples locally.

The changing of leaf colour should not be the only change happening this autumn. We at eight Gisborne TOWN Club are aturally also about changing our lifestyle to a healthier one by working towards our individual weight loss goal. This is achieved not by quick fixes or fad diets but by gradual weight loss through lifestyle change and food choices.

It’s about becoming smarter about our food choices by eating the right sort of food. So have fresh fruit on display in a bowl on kitchen bench so that you are more likely to eat that instead of raiding the pantry for chocolate when you are craving something sweet to snack on. We discuss different smart ways for choosing snacks and meal choices in our Group Therapy sessions. It’s not about a ‘Diet’, which has a start and end date, which is not really sustainable long-term. Instead it’s about making the switch to smarter, healthier food choices to last a lifetime.

So come along and check us out. We meet at Gisborne Bowling Club every Monday night at 6pm. Visitors and new members are always welcome.

More Gisborne women who are due for their regular cancer screening tests will be able to book in for their Pap test during extended clinics being offered by Gisborne Medical Centre and Ranges Medical.

The extra clinics are thanks to a grant provided by PapScreen Victoria. The extra times coincide with the presence of the BreastScreen mobile screening service and will continue after the breastscreens finish: the Pap test clinics will run until mid-June.

Currently 69.5 per cent of eligible women in Gisborne are screening for cervical cancer, which is better than the state average of 60.4 per cent.

Up to 90% of cervical cancer cases can be avoided with regular screening.

PapScreen Nurses for the three medical centres confirm that there is still work that needs to be done.

Only seven in 10 women in the Macedon Ranges are having their regular two-yearly Pap test as recommended.

A Pap test is the only way to look for abnormal changes to the cells on the cervix, which if left undetected and untreated, could develop into cervical cancer. We encourage all women who are due to make an appointment for a quick and simple Pap test today.

The annual Play for Heart Day on Sunday April 12 at Tony Clarke Reserve, Macedon, was a huge success.

The Play for Heart Day was initiated in 2011 by the Macedon and Gisborne Football Clubs in honour of Steve Simpson, affectionately known as “Mr Football”, who died suddenly at a training session with the Gisborne club in February 2011.

Craig Shore, president of Gisborne Rookies Junior Football Club, said “Another great day in honouring Steve Simpson and importantly raising money for local health services in the Macedon Ranges. Thanks to Macedon, Riddells Creek and Gisborne Rookies Junior Football Clubs for their support.”

Funds were raised through a gold coin entry fee and a barbecue run by the clubs. The aim of the day is to be a great

Vine to Wine at Holy Cross

Bullengarook's leaders This month we would like to introduce you to our captains and vice-captains at Bullengarook Secondary Campus.

Our male captain Andrew Purcell is actively involved in the Woodend CFA and enjoying his new role at the school. Female captain Laura Grabham has been instrumental in setting up the loom band group which has shown to be a great activity for keeping some of our quieter students busy at lunchtime.

Our vice-captains are Daniel Chandler, William Morris and Shannon Durant. Daniel is active in his community playing with the new Sunbury Phoenix Reclink footy team as well as Sunbury Kangaroos.

William is a member of the Trentham CFA and can always be relied upon to make new people welcome in the school community.

Shannon is a great communicator and has shown her leadership in assisting with conducting tours with groups of visitors to the campus. All of the captains and vice-captains speak confidently in front of the student group, reading out awards at our Friday assemblies.

It has been great to see these five terrific young people appreciating the importance of their roles and dealing with minor issues and disputes in the yard in a fair and responsible manner. We look forward to seeing them continue to mature as the year goes on.

Late in March all the grade 5/6 students from Holy Cross Primary School became expert grape pickers, collecting numerous bucket loads. After weeks of using refractometers to monitor their grapes’ sugar content, it was decided that despite not reaching the desired reading, it was best to get to the grapes before the European wasps did over the school holidays.

Throughout the holidays, the grapes were hygienically sent to a working winery, where they were destalked and began the crushing and fermenting process. The aim is to produce a sparkling pinot wine. The students are currently investigating chemical transformation as part of their Inquiry unit for term two, and are extremely fortunate to have their own vineyard within the school’s acreage, as well as share in the expertise of Mr Brendon Lawlor, who is a grade 1/2 teacher in the school and a vigneron. Macedon Primary pupils love the outdoors Macedon Primary School prides itself on its outdoor education program.

Recently in term one, the grade 5-6 students went on a camp to Wilson’s Promontory. It was amazing sleeping in tents for a whole week.

The grade 1-2 students had an overnight camp on the school’s oval. At Macedon Primary school camps, the students learn to set up and take down their tents, They learn about the environment and how we take care of nature and live harmoniously amid it.

We also have a program called Landcare to further develop our skills towards looking after Middle Gully Reserve (our Science and Environment grounds for self sustainability teaching and learning).

First Aid Training at New Gisborne Primary St John Ambulance recently visited New Gisborne Primary School to deliver ‘First Aid in Schools’ training to Year 5 and 6 students. Students investigated the importance of First Aid and what to do in the event of an emergency. They learnt how to identify when there is an emergency, how to keep themselves safe and how to call for an ambulance. They also learnt about delivering CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and how to assist in an emergency.

Rebecca said, “It was really worthwhile because I have wondered about what I would do if there was a situation where I could help somebody. I feel like now I know a lot more and could be really helpful in a situation that required first aid.”

Cameron said, “We learnt about really useful topics like managing a nose bleed and how to properly bandage a bleeding hand. I think that I will definitely use that knowledge in the future. I like it that I could help someone else because I know what to do.”

One big pyjama party at Gisborne Primary As previewed last month, the Good Friday Appeal was the biggest winner from Gisborne Primary School’s pyjama/onesie day, with almost $700 being contributed to the Royal Children’s Hospital fundraiser. On a chilly day at term’s end, an assortment of superheroes, jungle animals and colourful fabrics swarmed around respectfully in classrooms, as well as making for a potentially interesting coming together in the playground. Uncertainty remains as to whether Superman outraced cheetah, or if Winnie the Pooh and his froggy friends were able to reduce the region’s European wasp plague.

Nicole Crook, Carla Dodd and Kate Kuyateh are all bringing new life into the world within weeks of each other, so there are some new staff to welcome to the school as Term Two begins: Bradley Winters in Grade 3/4, Renee Young in Grade 3/4 Art and Elise Rush returns to where her teaching career began for Monday and Tuesday PE. Also, Metissa Withington recently joined us in an integration aide role.

This month at St Brigid’s primary school has been action-packed. Students from year three and above competed in interschool tennis and interschool swimming, achieving some amazing results.

The year three students also received the sacrament of Reconciliation.

The year six students attended either National Young Leaders Day at the Melbourne Convention Centre, where they heard inspirational speakers such as Andy Griffiths and Bindi Irwin, or the St Patrick's Day mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral, followed by a picnic and concert afterwards in the park.

Thank you to our art teacher Ms Shannon for helping all the students to make our school’s mural that won an art competition, which several schools from the Macedon Ranges entered. Our artwork will be displayed in the main foyer of the new Macedon Ranges Health Centre and Neale Street Medical Clinic.

One of the highlights of the month was coming back from the holidays to find Tilly the guinea pig had had four adorable babies – Bruce, TJ, Lola and Winter.

Surprisingly, a week later Pipsqueak had three babies – Nacho, Pip and Honey.

At night I love to look up at the night sky and see if I can find planets like Saturn or the stars that make up the Southern Cross.

I love learning about space and think it’s amazing how God created the world, the atmosphere and everything that’s in space.

I love going to the library and finding books on space and my dad and Mrs. Minter think what I show them is really cool.

Mrs Minter asked my dad to come in and talk about space to my class.

We have learned about space using different things like brain pop junior, books, using pictures and looking up things on the internet. I looked up stuff about satellites.

My dad would love to be an astronaut, but I think it might be a bit scary. I want to be a vet like my sister.

Last term we learnt about persuasive writing.

At first I didn’t think I could do it, but Mrs Minter showed us how to use OREO. That’s when you write your Opinion, Reason, Example and Opinion.

It turned out to be easy and now I love doing persuasive writing.

Year 10s on work experience The Year 10 students are currently out on work experience. This is a great opportunity for parents and guardians to have conversations around the different jobs that adults do in the work place and the important role that secondary school studies play in preparing students for further study to move into these jobs.

Students that understand the connections between current studies and future possibilities are more likely to be engaged with their schooling and perform at a higher level because they have a personal investment in the outcome. GSC, in partnership with Deakin University, is running a range of workshops in terms 2, 3 and 4 for all year levels designed specifically to assist students to better understand this.

Highlights include University visits for Years 7 and 8 students, Deakin participation at our

Careers Chatter with John Horley annual subject expo and a parents’ evening workshop in August. Parents and guardians for all year levels have received through the mail an invitation to participate in the joint research project between Deakin University and GSC around this program. Thank you to all parents who have volunteered to be part of this important research.

This month has been another fastpaced and exciting time at Gisborne Secondary. The senior debating team has started interschool competitions and members have shown their great abilities in public speaking and research on their topics: coal seam gas fracking and indigenous rights.

The Debutante Ball is another exciting event taking place this month, with the Year 11 students waiting in anticipation for what is sure to be a night to remember.

The Houses of Gisborne Secondary: Bishop, Bennet, Cherry, Barcham, Dixon, Wurundjeri, Ross Watt and MacDonald, will once again go head to head in the annual athletics carnival this month.

This day of fun, when the Year 12 students dress up, is always an enjoyable day for the student body, with many competitors signing up every year.

MADD (music, art, dance, drama) Week is also on in May, a week to showcase the outstanding talent of our students in the arts.

There are performances at lunchtimes and artwork displayed throughout the school, as well as competitions focused on the fine arts. Comedy sketches and skits are also popular as well as dance performances and bands playing.

The opportunity to see the marvellous talents that the students possess is what makes MADD Week an achievement for Gisborne Secondary.

With events and competitions celebrating sport, academic achievement and the arts, this month is a celebration of GSC’s diversity.

The Gisborne Singers’ performances of Gioachino Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle will open at the Church of Christ, New Gisborne, on Sunday May 17, folRossini lowed by St Ambrose Hall, Woodend, on Sunday May 24.

Both performances will begin at 3pm.

Free afternoon tea will be served after the concerts.

The Singers will be supported by a full orchestra and four professional soloists – Lee Abrahmsen (soprano); Kirsten Boerema (alto); Robert Barbaro (tenor) and Manfred Pohlenz (bass).

Rossini is best known for his operas such as the Barber of Seville, but later in life he composed many other works including this “Little Solemn Mass”.

Later generations have recognised it as a fine piece, full of attractive melody.

Certainly the choir have taken to it with gusto and are enjoying it immensely.

Potters to exhibit with winter festival In conjunction with the Woodend Winter Arts Festival, the Potters are holding their annual exhibition at the Community Hub in Forest Street, opening Saturday June 6 to Monday June 8.

The group have exhibited together for many years, featuring a variety of quality work including functional and sculptural forms.

On Saturday afternoon the artists will hold a “meet the artists” between 2pm and 4pm. All are invited to attend and enjoy the refreshments provided and talk to the artists about their work.

Spinners and Fibre Group Macedon Ranges Spinners and Fibre Group are a group of local spinners and fibre enthusiasts. The group formed in 1983 after the Ash Wednesday bushfires and we now meet each Tuesday between 12 and 4pm at the Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House, where we share ideas, knowledge and companionship.

Beer with no pubs In 1957 Gisborne’s only two hotels were closed because of the activities of SP bookies.

A

public meeting was held in Gisborne in 1957 to complain about the compulsory closing of its two hotels, both of which had been found guilty of allowing SP (starting price) bookmaking on their premises.

Up to this time SP bookmaking had been widespread in and around Victorian hotels. Generally the SP bookie would operate in the hotel bar or in a nearby lane or car park. He would often be accompanied by a writer who would accept bets, and sometimes there would be a payout man. Odds would be displayed on a wall or fence.

Established bookies in larger centres and in Melbourne could access racecourse starting odds via telephone.

A racecourse-based man would stand in an elevated position on the racecourse and semaphore odds to an adjacent house. These odds would then be phoned to a central office. One of these offices was discovered to have 40 telephones with separate rooms dedicated to individual races around the country. These phones were often installed by PMG workers in an out-ofhours capacity.

Bradshaw, Frederick Harrison and John Eric Twist were often attracted to these activities. Underworld fights and feuding, together with other unfortunate clandestine activities, resulted.

HE Gaming Squad was ineffective.

Bookies were regularly made aware of a potential Gaming Squad visit. The usual method of paying off a Gaming Squad member was by organising a bet on the day’s last winner.

If a bookie was convicted, any subsequent convictions attracted much greater penalties. As a result the local constabulary would knowingly charge individuals under different names. The Gaming Squad did the same.

Because of the associated crime and graft as well as the potential for state income, then Premier Henry Bolte, his Chief Secretary Arthur Rylah and the head of the VRC, Sir Chester Manifold, decided to start the TAB. As a result, the Gaming Squad was disbanded. The Government approached Mick Miller, later Chief Commissioner but then a senior constable, to form the Special Duties Gaming Squad with a view to controlling SP bookmaking and

to make way for legal betting via the TAB. As part of this squad’s activities, two teams of four undercover police made a visit to Gisborne.

The publican was delighted with this assistance until the police returned on the Monday to charge him with SP bookmaking One team visited the Victoria Hotel, whose publican was Gilbert Tranter, an ex-policeman. The bookie was the local taxi owner/driver. As the bar and the taxi were having a busy day, one of the undercover policemen assisted the publican and his brother to transfer the bets from the publican to the taxi driver.

The publican was delighted with this assistance until the police returned on the Monday to charge him with SP bookmaking on licensed premises.

Similar things occurred at the Telegraph Hotel and both publicans were convicted.

When the publican’s licence renewal application came before Judge Fraser (father of tennis player Neale Fraser) of the Licensing Court, their licences were cancelled forthwith prior to the

rising of the Court. Local police were called and the hotel doors were closed immediately.

The publicans were given 28 days to dispose of their assets and the hotels were closed until new publicans bought the premises.

Just a couple of years earlier, on Friday 20 May 1955, there was excitement at the Telegraph Hotel when the following occurred:

“Drinkers abandoned their glasses and formed a human chain to rescue furniture from the blazing Telegraph Hotel in Gisborne last night. The fire swept through the hotel ceiling during a blinding rainstorm, causing damage estimated at £2000 before it was checked.

“Customers in the crowded bar drank on for several minutes, unaware that flames were sweeping through the roof above them. Mr Harold McNamara, licensee, said later: ‘The bar was almost packed when Tom Stevens from the local bank rushed in, shouting “Your hotel’s on fire!”

‘We laughed at him at first, but soon realised he was serious. The bar emptied in record time.’

Gisborne brigade brought the fire under control within about 30 minutes.”

For the green thumbs . . .

GARDENING Column with Chris Williams

The autumn foliage trees and shrubs are taking centre stage in my garden.

When we think of plants that develop leaf colour in autumn we would most likely think of large deciduous trees like Maples, Liquidambars and Oaks.

There are however many smaller growing plants that develop fantastic autumnal foliage. In my garden I have beds of Mollis Azaleas which develop wonderful fiery autumn foliage as well as spectacular flowers in spring. Some other shrubs that colour nicely are Cornus, Fothergilla and even Blueberry and Asparagus.

I have a couple of large drifts of Lily Of The Valley; even this diminutive groundcover turns bright orange around the end of April.

Last spring, after a long search, I was fortunate to find a few pots of Arabis caucasica in a local nursery.

Arabis is commonly known as Rock Cress; it is a dense, mat-forming groundcover that is covered in a mass of pearly white flowers in October. I had been looking for Arabis for a few years; it seems to have fallen out of favour with our production nurseries.

I planted the few plants that I had purchased before Christmas and they grew well over summer. At the start of autumn I took about 100 cuttings from the new growth and potted them up in the nursery and most of them survived! I have recently planted these newly propagated specimens and they seem to be doing well.

It’s fun to have a go at producing your own plants. It costs very little and the result can be quite rewarding – more plants for your own garden or perhaps some to share with friends and family.

Acacia added to threatened list Wonderful news for Daly Nature Reserve! We have been officially notified that the Acacia rostriformis has been added to the Threatened List of the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988.

We believe this indicates the need for stronger protection of the colony that naturally occurs within Daly Nature Reserve. It shows the importance of protecting and conserving the natural environment and natural processes for their historic, scientific, landscape, habitat and cultural values throughout the entire Daly Nature Reserve.

Gisborne Garden Club Established around an architect-designed home, with panoramic views to Hanging Rock, Woodend and beyond, the venue for the club’s Kerry April meeting was a Langmaid six-acre, predominantly Australian native garden. Now inclusive also of a few selective exotic trees and shrubs, the garden hugs the house, blurring boundaries and softening edges with grasses spilling over pathways, ground covers filling in between shrubs and taller trees offering both shade and privacy.

Obviously the result of a great deal of passion, dedication and countless hours of toil, we are appreciative of the owners allowing us the opportunity to experience their achievements.

Although a chilly day at the outset, the sun broke through and provided an enjoyable afternoon for nearly 40 members and visitors. We are fortunate to have several original members still in attendance, and this was noted when we shared a celebratory cake to acknowledge our 27th birthday.

The next meeting on May 13 will be a Mystery Bus Trip: $60pp and includes morning tea, lunch and venue entry.

Golfers raise funds for fire brigade

Gisborne Bulldogs basketballers ready themselves for use of the new stadium in Gisborne.

Activities kick off at new stadium Macedon Ranges residents celebrated the first community use of the newly completed double court stadium in Gisborne on April 27.

This achievement was marked by a ‘community tip-off’ match between the Macedon Ranges Netball Association and the Gisborne Bulldogs Basketball Club.

The stadium has been a joint initiative between the Council and Gisborne Secondary College.

The community will have use of one court four mornings a week and both courts at evenings and weekends.

The double court stadium will host exciting programs run by the Gisborne Bulldogs

Basketball Club, Macedon Ranges Netball Association, Sunbury Basketball Association and Gisborne Soccer Club.

Macedon juniors triumph in summer grand finals Winner, winner, chicken dinner! Huge congratulations to our two junior teams who won the summer season Grand Finals. Macedon’s Section A3 and D Red were both victorious. In total, seven of our junior teams made it to the finals which is an amazing effort. Our Saturday Open Section 1 played in the summer season grand final taking home the runners-up trophy.

Mid-week Ladies and Thursday night Open are both midway through their season.

Gisborne Aquathon completes series The Gisborne Aquathon was held on Sunday, April 12, to coincide with the Gisborne Aquatic Centre’s 10th birthday anniversary celebrations.

In near-perfect conditions, competitors in the long and short courses completed the run leg through Jackson’s Creek Reserve around to the Botanical Gardens and back to the Aquatic Centre. The pool was where the action next took place with several lead changes between the short course competitors.

Sixteen mini-course competitors lined up for their event to complete a 500m run and a 50m swim.

Congratulations to our series winners, Cameron Anderson for Short Course (Male), Kezia Laker – Short Course (Female) and Patrick Matthews – Long Course (Male), and to all competitors who completed either individual events or the series.

After a busy April, Macedon Football Netball Club prepares to host the Country Week Interleague Championships with the Riddell League taking on the higher-ranked Nepean League on Saturday, May 23.

With Tony Clarke Reserve looking an absolute treat it should be a great day out for all, showcasing local talent and one of the best football grounds in country Victoria.

Anzac Day was a great success and the club raised money for the Commando Trust, and only a week earlier we hosted a most interesting and inspiring evening listening to Rosie Batty.

Community bowls a popular success

Gisborne Thunder team at the District titles.

Gisborne Thunder update Gisborne Thunder took a strong team of 22 swimmers to the Central Victorian Championships in Bendigo during March and finished a very meritorious third overall behind the Bendigo East and Echuca clubs.

In State Country level, we had swimmers compete at the All Juniors competition held at MSAC in Melbourne. Congratulations to Hollie for being our only swimmer to reach a state final. Eight swimmers were also selected in the Central Victoria team to compete at the Country Interdistrict competition in February.

Well done to Hollie Buerckner, William Dimery, Darcy Frew, Laura O’Meara, Emma Pendlebury, Erin Roche, Olivia Smith and Brooke Williams.

The season climax was our own club championships held on March 14. Age champions were determined on the night and these, as well as other season awards, were presented at our presentation night in April.

The Gisborne Bowling Club’s community bowls program has recently finished after running for eight weeks with 14 teams competing two nights each week: Tuesday night sponsored by Mitre 10 and Wednesday by Bendigo Bank.

This program is a major means of recruiting for the club. This year has been most successful with over 100 players thoroughly enjoying themselves each week. We thank our members for their tireless efforts in running the nights each week, a job well done. After seven weeks of round robin competition, finals saw the BEAP team take out the Tuesday night trophies and the Crackling Cakes won a thrilling Wednesday night final by one shot from reigning champs, the Jugganaughts.

Mt Macedon golfers secure long lease In very exciting news, after a number of years of uncertainty around the lease of the golf club land and a recent review by the Commonwealth, Mount Macedon Golf Club has been offered a 15-year lease with a 15year extension. This offers a level of certainty long sought and the opportunity for long-term planning.

Autumn is a time when the club holds a couple of signature events including the Gold Plate and the GREAT Gisborne Gazette Golf Gala.

INXS tribute band to perform at Golf Club

Man U star in Gisborne clinic Manchester United star Jesper Olsen came to Gisborne to share his skills for three days in the school holidays.

Olsen’s Football Star Academy brought talented international coaches from Jordan, Hungary and Ireland, to put the young players from the Macedon Ranges through a demanding program.

At our March general meeting we were entertained and informed by member Mark Hobbs, Australian World Fly Fishing Championship representative.

Mark gave a brilliant, enthusiastic and detailed presentation on his attendance ranging from preparation to the travails of competing in a very testing environment. His illustrated talk included many scenic pictures of the pretty Czech riparian countryside. He brought home to us the skill, fitness, tenacity and cunning required to compete at this level. Examples cited were the capacity to cast to a fish, catch it, carry and present it for recording, sometimes across the stream, release it quickly so it was seen able to swim away, and then be ready for the next cast within about four minutes. Mark then demonstrated the equipment and setting up required for Czech nymLouis Bokor phing.

Our member John Waters, Australian Casting Champion, has been teaching members to improve their fly casting.

With his natural talent for imparting skills he is enabling the achievement of accurate casting to short lengths for beginners and mastering of the “double haul” for long-distance casts for advanced casters.

Cricket Team of the Year The Gisborne and District Cricket Association has seen four of its cricketers selected in the Central Highlands Region’s team of the year.

This is a wonderful result that demonstrates the quality of the players competing locally.

Among the four is Gisborne Dragons’ Jarryd Vernon who,

with 32 wickets at an average of 20.47, was selected as an off spinner.

However, Jarryd’s batting, which produced 416 runs at an average of 37.82 and which included a century and two 50s, really would justify his selection as an all-rounder.

It’s with great delight that I can officially announce that the Macedon CFA has now raised enough funds to replace its existing brigade-owned fire tanker with a flash new crewcab medium tanker. With the help of the community plus an amazing donation of about $77,000 from a local benefactor, the target has been reached.

An order for the new tanker will be placed within the next few weeks, with delivery expected around the beginning of 2016. A handover ceremony will then take place at the fire station.

Advertising will be placed around town when there’s a confirmed date.

On a rather personal note I’d like to congratulate my dear husband Mark who competed in the opening round of the 2015 Australian Polaris RZR Championship in Wollongong recently. The RZR is a four-wheeled off-road sports vehicle and a lot of fun! One of his teammates was none other than award-winning actor and motoring enthusiast Shane Jacobson. News from Hooray for us: residents get it right on bin night Macedon Ranges residents are better than Victorians overall in putting the right things in bins, according to a Council bin audit undertaken in December 2014.

The state-wide average of wrong things in bins was last recorded in 2013 at 22%. Council’s audit found that only 1% of green waste bins contained the wrong materials, and 16% of garbage bins contained recyclables.

Illegal rubbish Council is trialling CCTV cameras in areas kn own as hotspots for ille gal dumping of rubbish.

Illegal dumping is a criminal offence and people can face fines up to $8,850 if caught.

The top two reasons for buying a property in the Macedon Ranges Shire were ‘rural lifestyle’ and ‘beauty of the area’ according to the latest New Ratepayer Survey report.

Contrary to popular belief, Macedon Ranges doesn’t just attract ‘tree-changers’. Respondents were more likely to come from a rural area than a city. Of those who came from a city, most previously lived in Melbourne.

‘Feel / atmosphere’, ‘community’, ‘country’ and ‘quiet’ were the most common terms used by respondents to describe what they valued most about their local town.

Most households that responded to the survey expect to live in the Macedon Ranges for 15 years or more.

Maximising your contributions into Super Megan owns a large property on Mt Macedon and is considering downsizing to a smaller property. By downsizing she will have excess cash and is considering contributing to her Superannuation Fund. Megan is employed on a part time basis and earns $65,000 per annum.

If Megan is 64 She can contribute the following:  Up to $35,000 as a concessional contribution i.e. before tax as a salary sacrifice (this cap includes any Super Guarantee contributions)  Up to $180,000 non-concessional contribution i.e. after tax. ‘Customers clear counter’ “Great excitement was caused at Gisborne recently when a bullock, which was being driven through the town to the Bullengarook abattoirs by two horsemen, Messrs E Hebbard and H Cogger, dashed through the front door of the Commercial Bank [in Hamilton Street] and into the public banking chamber.

“The officials and a lady customer, Mrs [Meg] Tweddle, who, with her child, three, was transacting business at the time, were considerably alarmed. Mrs Tweddle, instantly grasping the dangerous situation, shoved the child over the counter and took refuge as best she could behind one of the folding doors.

“To get the animal out of the bank, men had to get into the building through the manager’s quarters. No one was injured and no damage was done.”

Major operation to replace 1929 power poles Powercor teams turned out in numbers with huge cranes on April 18 to replace two 86-yearold power poles south of Jacksons Creek on the hill below Melbourne Road.

The two red ironbark poles are 18.5 metres long.

Answer: Many parents grapple with this issue, especially when teen novels such as Twilight and Hunger Games go hyper mainstream and put parents into that position a little earlier than they’d like.

Some say ‘I’m just happy they want to read’ or ‘My child has an above average vocabulary’ without considering the ramifications of exposing kids to mature themes such as sex, violence, death, drugs and suicide, perhaps before they are ready.

Of course this generation of i-gen kids are more exposed to heavier media news than we were and have learnt to self-monitor, while others don’t delve as deeply as others about mature concepts, preferring to skip over tragic or disturbing events.

Some parents read the book before their child to allow discussion later but of course this cannot be done for all books! So some questions to ask yourself are; 1. What mature themes can my child handle, and can they separate fantasy from reality?

2. Do I as a parent have time to read and discuss the books with my child so they can gain a more realistic perspective? Can they answer open ended questions about story, characters, and any parts that made them feel uncomfortable?

3. Are there any unhealthy obsessive ideas that could influence my child’s emotions?

4. Do I let my child view similar things on TV or in film or video games. And if so, have these had an

effect on their wellbeing?

5. Is the main character more than four years older than my child and, if so, what experiences are they having that I want my child to avoid for the moment?

Remember, pre-teens and teens are going to want to read what’s popular and certainly not all teen books are dark and depressing.

Many deal with taking responsibility, making amends, empathy etc. The important thing is to know what’s best for your child given their emotional – not literacy – level and allow them to read in a safe environment where they can debrief if they want to.

Western Water’s ‘Water Cafe’ to be at Steam Rally Western Water’s Water Cafe will be providing free chilled drinking water to visitors at the Gisborne Vintage Machinery Society family fun day on Sunday May 17.

People can come in, take a seat and relax with a glass of tap water, while kids can have fun with the interactive water wall.

The cafe is part of the utility’s Choose Tap program, which encourages people to save money and prevent waste by swapping bottled water for drinking water from the tap. A reusable water bottle can be filled from the tap every day for two years for around the same cost as one bottle of water at the supermarket.

PET plastic water bottles are also a huge source of waste, taking up to 1000 years to break down in landfill.

Western Water will be rolling out its Choose Tap campaign across the region in the coming months, including providing glass bottles to local cafes and looking at potential sites for drinking fountains.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has also been provided with Choose Tap bottles to encourage staff to drink tap water.

Bendigo Bank – a local supporter Rose Davies gets to know our local businesses When it comes to supporting the local community in a range of ways, Gisborne & District Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank is a winner.

Originally established in Gisborne in 2008, it then provided employment for five staff; now there are six staff members, all of whom live locally. The branch offers Bendigo Bank products and great customer service.

Unlike most other banks that focus on making large profits, the Community Bank branch with its local focus operates more like a local business than a bank.

The branch has a board of directors and local shareholders who helped get the business up and running. The chairman and the directors make up a team of seven volunteers who work together overseeing the branch activities.

We are assured by branch manager Susan Tresidder that a significant percentage of the profits of this branch return to the community to support local projects.

To date the Gisborne branch has funded more than $220,000 worth of projects in our community.

Grants range from large amounts such as $50,000 towards the new Macedon Ranges Regional Netball Complex in New Gisborne and $11,000 for four defibrillators for the Gisborne CFA, down to smaller amounts for groups such as local kindergartens.

In the past two years a student scholarship has been set

up in partnership with La Trobe University. The scholarship is open to any students who live in greater Gisborne who study at La Trobe University and is worth $36,000 over three years.

Any community ‘not for profit’ group can apply for funding from the branch.

Applications can be made online twice a year and an inspiring ‘Community Investment Evening’ is held a few months after submissions close to announce those lucky winners.

The special cafe will be at the Steam Rally on May 17.

More about long-time identity Joe Morrison This month I am taking a break from Richard Haire’s story but I promise to return to it next month.

Last November I recorded Joe Morrison’s story that he had kindly written for me to tell of his early years growing up in Gisborne and Bullengarook. Sadly Joe passed away on November 21 shortly after we printed his story. He was 92 years of age.

As the Morrisons have been an extremely well known family in our area for many years I thought we may continue to tell of the life Joe led following his marriage to Lilian in 1945.

Joe had worked for Cherry and Sons making butter churns etc and was not called up for active service during World War 2 because he was kept busy at Cherry’s making rifle boxes for the troops, and this was considered an essential service. Cherry and Sons later became Alston Windmills and Joe continued to work there.

Around this period Joe acquired a block in Stephen Street for 75 pounds.

He had great faith in his own ability and proceeded to build a house. Joe went out to Bullengarook and cut the raw logs from the forest. He then took them to his parents’ home where they were able to mill the timber for his house.

He was able to do most of the

The ’Rook Revisited with Shirley McKeown building works as he had gathered information from many tradesmen around Gisborne. Cyril Saunders snr. was a great help to Joe. The house became a great family home for Joe, Lilian and their five children.

In the late 1960s Joe cleared the orchard from the block next to their home and built a huge shed. This became ‘Gisborne Repairs’ and Joe became well known for repairing any broken steel items people brought to him. He also made gates and many other items.

Lilian was the company book keeper and with her support the business thrived. Joe continued to work at Alston’s for two days a week and the rest of the time at his own factory. Many hooks, vegetable frames, hose reels and bikes for the kids appeared from this shed made with Joe’s own hands.

The family of the late Joe Morrison would like to express to the community their sincere thanks for all the support and kind words following the passing of their father.

Amazing story of Audrey the rabbit

By Lisa Fowler I have a true tale to tell about my daughter’s adventurous lop-eared rabbit called Audrey. By way of background, Audrey is a quasi-free rabbit, spending the occasional night out of her cage when she decides she will not let us catch her.

My four children and I set off on the last Thursday of the holidays for a hike up Mt Macedon; we left Audrey roaming free in the garden.

We parked the car at the Mt Macedon Trading Post and walked – 12km in two hours. We got back to the car, dumped our packs and proceeded to the Trading Post for lunch. (Thanks Brad.) Forty five minutes later we returned to the car. About 10 metres out my daughter screams “Mum, Audrey is under the car”!

Of course I told the innocent child that was impossible. Unfortunately, – and uncharacteristically – I was wrong. It certainly was our Audrey. She must have climbed up under the car to sleep in the warm car body and then hitched a lift to the Trading Post. We chased the darling rabbit around the pub, across the road, under, over and around every possible obstacle.

The epic burden of public humiliation weighed heavily on the kids – “this is soooo embarrassing”. The epic burden of “I want to kill (humanely) this rabbit and get home,” weighed heavily on me.

Audrey ran under the car again. We dived on to our stomachs to try to reach her but, to our shock, she had vanished

into thin air. A pensive 1.2 seconds was spent on what to do next, “Quick kids, GET IN THE CAR”!

We drove the 10 minutes home with the kids on point, looking from all angles for any signs of rabbit, limbs or fluff.

Nothing. We pulled up in the driveway and tentatively stepped out of the car, backing away from it like it was wired for an explosion. Sixty seconds – nothing, ninety seconds – nothing, then out pops Audrey!

She wandered back to the grass, unharmed and seemingly uninterested.

The big question is “where else has she been”?

Appointments at Church of Christ Early this year we were pleased to be able to make two new appointments to the Church of Christ’s ministry staff: Marg and Marc Huggins have each taken up parttime positions as Associate Minister (Care) and Associate Minister (Communications), respectively.

Marg and Marc have been members at our church for more than 18 years and it’s been great to be able make these appointments from within our church body.

Marg’s role revolves largely around aspects of care, both within and outside our church. Her qualifications in pastoral counselling and coaching, as well as her experience in handson pastoral care over a number of years, made her an ideal fit for this role.

Marc’s role has a focus on communications, both within and outside our church, including our website, social media and print media, as well as responsibility for finance and administration. Marc has qualifications and a working background in accounting and IT, which suit him well for the role.

The appointment of Marg and Marc is an exciting step for our church that will help put us on the front foot as we develop ways of better serving our congregation and the broader community.

We all love our mothers and when we become a parent we are so thankful for what we have learned from our mums. Parenting isn’t easy. Today so much is expected from a mother and sometimes it would be great to have some extra help and advice.

Macedon Ranges Mums is a monthly get-together held in the hall at 49 Fisher Street (second Monday of each month 9.30 to 11.30am) for mothers of pre-schoolers.

Mums are encouraged with helpful hints on parenting and have a lovely morning tea while the kids are being entertained. We would like to invite mums of pre-schoolers to come along and be encouraged/equipped in their vital role as mothers.

New youth group starts The Field Trip is a weekly program for kids who want to be extraordinary and have fun doing it. It’s a ‘youth group’ for the 21st century, providing young people aged 10 to 17 with connection, employment and a trajectory for personal and professional development.

Weekly meetings began in April with the first four meetings FREE for all kids.

Meetings will be held at the Lancefield Mechanics Institute, Sundays 4-6pm.

Gisborne Uniting Church Thank you to everyone who came to our Car Boot Sale.

As a result of the sale plus donations, we were able to send $1000 to the Vanuatu Appeal. A very big thank you to Noel for all his efforts in organising the sale. We also sent $390 to the Lenten Appeal which supports a range of needs both internationally and here in Australia. We continue to donate food on a weekly basis for those finding it difficult to feed their families.

The UCAF (Uniting Church Adult Fellowship), which now meets bi-monthly, enjoyed a movie afternoon on April 20.

A date to mark in your diary is Sunday June 21, when we will be having another of our concerts. Everyone is welcome and all proceeds will go to the Gisborne Secondary College Chaplaincy Fund. More details will be available in the June issue of the Gazette and flyers will be placed around the town.

We are also having a soup lunch on Sunday May 17 which we are looking forward to.

We are hoping that the renovations to the front of the church will be starting soon.

Our service is held at 9.30am each Sunday and while we are a small congregation we are very welcoming. If you are seeking somewhere to worship you would be made most welcome.

House of the Rock

Resurrection pipe organ completed The former All Saints Old Cathedral pipe organ has completed its transition from Bendigo to the Church of the Resurrection, Macedon. On March 23 the first truckload of parts arrived, and over the following two weeks the organ was assembled.

First, the bench-work was put in place to house a new blower and two new wind reservoirs on the lower deck with wind chests on the level above. New casework of Tasmanian blackwood wattle was then assembled to accommodate 945 pipes.

In terms of dimension, timber and design this casework is impressive, blending well with the church’s interior.

The 1936 console was stripped to reveal the wonderful light-coloured grain of its ash timber, thus matching the church pews.

The organ was first played on April 12. Formal dedication by Bishop Andrew Curnow of Bendigo will take place on Sunday, May 31 at the 10am service, in memory of parishioner, choir member and avid music supporter, Dr David Gome.

Official opening ceremony The National Day of Thanksgiving is to be celebrated during the weekend of May 30 and 31.

House of the Rock intends to celebrate by holding the official opening ceremony of the new premises at 247 Station Road, New Gisborne, on the Sunday at 2.30pm.

There are many people to be thanked for their input to this project but we don’t want it to end there! Over the years this building has had many occupants and we wish to celebrate every former user and their influence on where the building is today.

Friends and neighGay Wilding bours will all be made welcome at the Opening Ceremony during the afternoon. We also thank God for his provision of such a beautiful facility for the community of Gisborne.

We are excited to announce that John Everard will be taking over as our new Pastor, alongside his wife Liz, beginning in May. John has a wealth of experience: he was Pastor for almost 10 years at Numurkah, near Shepparton, where the church grew significantly.

He has also been heavily involved with churches in Albury and, most recently, Werribee.

John has a passion to encourage people in their faith and to build on a great family atmosphere through relationships and also for a place where youth can grow and develop. We are very excited for what the future holds!

Also on behalf of FaithWorks I would like to sincerely thank Ken and Lexie Lethborg who have pastored the church since its inception over a decade ago.

100 Years Ago From the pages of the old Gisborne Gazette May 1915 Correspondence from latest meeting of the Gisborne Shire: H. Barlow stated that he was deputed to enrol a team to form the local fire brigade, and applied for permission to take over the apparatus.

From F. Haglethorn, Minister of Public Works, stating that he had decided that, after three months, he would make an order to unite the Shire of Newham and Woodend to the Shire of Gisborne, to form one municipality. Discussion took place as to proposition of having Riddell attached to the Shire of Gisborne, plus the possibility of naming Macedon the centre of a new shire.

A Patriotic Gathering – There was a crowded assemblage in the Mechanics’ Hall on Thursday evening at the send-off to Messrs. Eric Cherry, M. Lock, H. Moffitt and R. Miller, who are about to proceed to the front. Presentations were made by the Rev. H.F. Miller, as follows: Mr. E. Cherry, wristlet watch and money belt; Mr. M. Lock, safety razor and money belt; Mr. Miller, wristlet watch, and Mr. Moffitt, silver-mounted pipe.

Gisborne Police Court – Yesterday, before Mr. Barlow, P.M., a Macedon local was fined 5/-, with 10/- costs, for carrying meat through the streets of Macedon without the same being covered.

E. Gardiner was granted a hackney carriage licence for his motor car and Mr. McLean got a similar licence for Riddell.

Football – Gisborne -v- Woodend. The locals, or, to be correct, ten of them, comprising three regular players and seven others, made the trip to Woodend on Saturday last to do battle against the Woodenders. The visitors were given the help of a player from among the spectators, who proved very effective at times. The game resulted in an easy win for Woodend. Todd was central umpire and gave complete satisfaction.
