Family on a mission Andrea and Matthew Collins have been part of the Gisborne community for more than 20 years and have experienced firsthand the benefits that Gisborne Copy Centre, run by Windarring, has provided to the community, its workers and their families.

Windarring announced earlier this year that it would have to close the Copy Centre in December due to financial constraints.

The mother and son duo have set themselves the mission to reopen the copy centre as a not-for-profit venture to provide continued service and important stability to the community.

HOME PAGE From the Editor's desk Wow – the final edition of 2017 already! It’s been a busy and rewarding year at the Gazette during which we have presented nearly 1000 local stories. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to our community newspaper and helped share happy local news.

Over the year we’ve celebrated the efforts of local groups, schools, sporting clubs, individuals and businesses to better our community. This month we’ve highlighted Andrea and Matt Collins who want to save the copy centre to ensure ongoing print work in Gisborne for people with disabilities.

Such an establishment provides valuable hard and soft benefits to our town. See the Collins’ goals and appeal on page 5.

The end of the year means community Christmas events and fire season preparation are in order.

We have provided a summary of both on pages 4-5 and 7. Thanks to Gisborne Primary School teacher Christy Holt and her 4A class for providing fire season safety tips and a striking visual for this edition.

Stamped on the churn are the words The EXCEL Churn No 0 Patent Application Saunders & Walsh, Gisborne Vic While the Historical Society holds records relating to both the Saunders and Walsh families of Gisborne, there is nothing suggesting a business producing the churns. Dedicated Googling also has not produced any information.

The well-known Cherry company is the only recorded manufacturer of butter churns locally.

Does anyone have any knowledge that may help unlock the puzzle?

Backyard visitors make life tweet in the Ranges

Two readers brought in photos of scarlet honeyeaters seen in their back yards in November. This one was in a bottle brush in South Gisborne. According to MRSC environment officer William Terry, there have been several sightings this year in the Macedon Ranges and in Melbourne, whereas sightings in previous years have been rare.

Pony club tops Australia For Gisborne Pony Club, it’s time to celebrate.

Of the 850 pony clubs across the country, Pony Club Australia (PCA) selected Gisborne Pony Club as 2017 Club of the Year.

Gisborne District Commissioner Katrina McDougall travelled to Toowoomba to accept the award accompanied by her mum, Leonie Lang, a life member of pony club.

“Pony club is near and dear to my heart,” Katrina said. “I’m the middle of three generations of pony club riders, and my daughter enjoys it as much as I did. Pony Club for us is a family affair. We consider it our mission to include anyone who wants to give pony club a try.”

PCA noted that the club increased membership by 33% in just 18 months by creating opportunities for riders without horses and for children with special needs. The club also provides outstanding coaching for all riders, offers flexible programs for older riders and has expanded the range of disciplines on offer.

Katrina McDougall says the values of resilience, hard work, fair competition and a connection to local communities are more important than ever. Prize money will go toward a desperately needed new clubhouse.

Benetas and Macedon Ranges Health to amalgamate Macedon Ranges Health and Benetas have announced their amalgamation after a vote on November 14 by Macedon Ranges Health members.

Don Tidbury, CEO of Macedon Ranges Health, welcomed the decision. “Macedon Ranges Health’s members voted resoundingly in support of the proposed amalgamation," he said "[This] is a great reflection on the enormous benefits the amalgamation will bring to the region.”

Benetas is set to invest $60 million over the next eight years to upgrade, expand and redevelop the facilities and services that Macedon Ranges Health provides. This will see an initial investment of $1.2 million in existing facilities and infrastructure for the benefit of the community and aged care residents.

The CEO of Benetas, Sandra Hills OAM, thanked the Macedon Ranges community for its support and said Benetas was committed to maintaining the heritage and identity of Macedon Ranges Heatlh.

“Benetas looks forward to proving the community’s trust is well placed as we work through the amalgamation process over the next six months with Macedon Ranges Health and deliver on the needs of the residents and clients,” she said.

Make sure you're prepared for the fire season This is the time of year we all become conscious of fire safety. Here are some of the contributions made to the Gazette this month to remind us of what we can do to ensure the summer is a safe one.

Tips from Macedon Ranges Shire Council on beating the heat

Remember to think of pets and horses ● Remember to prepare for your pets as well; have bedding, food and water ready to go and make sure you can transport them safely when leaving early. Always put your own safety before the safety of your pets.

Make sure your pets can be identified easily, microchip your animals and include your details such as your phone number on collars. Have a plan for horses and livestock. A large, wellgrazed area where they can move freely, with a supply of water is the safest. Remove all gear from horses and always keep them contained on your property, they are at serious risk on roads where visibility will be poor.

It is important to know and understand the effects of extreme heat – who is at risk and how you can reduce the effect on yourself and others.

When the heat hits: ● Drink water: Even if you don’t feel thirsty, drink water. Take a bottle of water with you always. ● Keep cool: Seek out air-conditioned buildings, draw your blinds, use a fan, take cool showers and dress in light and loose clothing made from natural fabrics. ● Plan ahead: Schedule activities in the coolest part of the day and avoid exercising in the heat.

If you must go out, wear a hat and sunscreen and take water with you. ● Help others: Look after those most at risk in the heat – your neighbour living alone, the elderly, the young, people with a medical condition, and don’t forget your pets.

● Hot cars kill: Never leave kids, adults or pets in hot cars. The temperature inside a parked car can double within minutes. ● On locally declared Heat Health Alert days, the libraries in Gisborne, Kyneton, Romsey and Woodend will be running the 'Beat the Heat' program. Head there for a comfortable airconditioned space that offers free water, toys for the kids and, of course, books, magazines and newspapers to read, as well as free wi-fi and internet access. ● On hot, dry, windy days, fires can start and spread quickly. If the Fire Danger Rating is Severe, Extreme or Code Red, leaving early – before a fire has started – is the only option that guarantees your safety.

Family on mission to keep copy centre

By Andrea and Matt Collins It seems everyone knows the girls at the Copy Centre in Gisborne. After all, they have been serving the community for the past ten years with Windarring.

Earlier this year, the girls were told that the Gisborne Copy Centre would close on December 19. To say the girls were devastated would be an understatement. Tears flowed and hugs ensued.

An idea was born. What if we re-opened the business and allowed the quality service to continue with the community? Everyone could then enjoy the holiday period knowing that the doors would reopen on January 8. We intend to grow the business by providing focused and cutting-edge services with continued personalised attention in this increasingly automated world, while supporting those with disabilities.

Sean's passport to leadership Sean Doherty, Gisborne Secondary College Captain in 2016, has been selected as part of the Australian delegation to the International Youth Leadership Conference in Prague in January.

The conference is a five-day inten- Sean Doherty with passport at sive course on in- the ready. ternational relations, global politics and diplomacy for young leaders from around the world. Alongside seminars and debates, Sean will take part in simulated diplomatic events such as a mock United Nations Security Council meeting and an imitation trial of the International Criminal Court.

After the conference Sean will visit the United Nations and World Trade Organisation in Geneva with the delegation and attend a sitting of Parliament in London. This trip has been a silver lining for Sean whose initial gap year plans were ruined when he broke his leg days before his scheduled departure to Camp America in June.

Upon his return Sean will attend Melbourne University where he will major in history, politics and international relations.

CHRISTMAS EVENTS Gisborne Christmas Festival The Bendigo Bank Gisborne Christmas Festival is nearly upon us, with this major event to be held on Friday December 8 from 4.30pm to 9.30pm.

Families are encouraged to bring a rug and make themselves comfortable at Gardiner Reserve where there will be two local bands playing, free children’s activities, family entertainment, carnival rides, market and food stalls, and coffee and ice cream vans.

The children’s activities include a jumping castle, animal farm, face painting, balloonist, glitter tattoos, face makeup (for mums too), hair braiding and sparkles, and junior sporting activities.

Of course, there will be the ever-popular parade at

6.30pm, with the Festival concluding with a fireworks display at 9.15pm.

The Gisborne and District Lions Club, which is coordinating the Festival, is extremely appreciative of the financial contribution made by the local community to enable this event to be successful. GREAT Gisborne Carols by Candlelight Carols by Candlelight will be held on Sunday December 10 at 7pm at Dixon Field. Pre-entertainment by Jimmy & Paige will begin at 6pm. A huge voice and breathtaking guitar leads to a virtuosic and passionate performance. Come early so you don’t miss them.

There will be a sausage sizzle, ice cream vans, coffee van, and glow sticks for sale.

Come along and listen to choirs from the local primary schools as well as the Young Voices of Macedon

and join in the singing of carols with the Carols by Candlelight Choir accompanied

by Jem Sherwill on keyboard and Jaidan Shapcott on cello. Come and see who will be awarded the Bendigo Bank Local Hero Award for services to our community over many years. Macedon Family Christmas Party After a successful inaugural event last year, the Macedon Villages Volunteers (MMV) group is again holding a free Christmas Party for all the residents of Macedon and Mount Macedon this year, on Friday December 22.

This is a picnic event scheduled for the last day of school, to be held in the picturesque surrounds of Ash Wednesday Park in Smith Street.

Local bands will provide entertainment through the evening from 5pm, with a family-friendly finish time of 9pm.

Kids’ entertainment, including a jumping castle, will be provided, along with food and drinks from local venues for the adults and even a coffee cart! Macedon Scouts will be running a sausage sizzle and you can buy some yummies for your holiday enjoyment from the cake stall. Macedon CFA will again be providing shelter for the stage and a generator to power up the bands, and the Jubilee Hall committee is supplying and running the public address system.

Medicos thank SES for great service Gisborne Medical Centre hosted a morning tea for Gisborne SES in November and donated $500 to thank them for their outstanding help when the medical centre flooded early on a Sunday morning in August.

It was all hands on deck when a burst pipe meant SES and medical centre staff were wading through ankle-deep water.

To avert disaster, the water was swept out of the medical centre and the carpets were stripped, meaning the centre was able to see patients again only 48 hours later.

Steve Newton said they couldn’t speak highly enough of all the volunteers who worked through their Sunday to help ensure the centre could continue providing its service to the community.

“The morning tea and donation are a small way to thank everyone who contributed," Dr Gill said. "This was a great example of our community coming together in a crisis.”

To avoid a recurrence of this situation, the offending pipe has been bypassed to an outside channel. The medical centre has now been fully restored with new carpets much to the delight of the patients and staff.

Gisborne raises record amount The Gisborne Auxiliary held a very successful hamper raffle and stall in October at the Gisborne Village Shopping Centre and we thank IGA and the local community for their valued support.

From this event together with other fundraising efforts and donations throughout the year we have raised a record $6,000 which has been forwarded to Vision Australia headquarters.

This will assist in providing vital services for adults and children who are blind or have low vision, including clients in the Macedon Ranges. Members are thanked for a great effort in accomplishing this remarkable result.

Large-print calendars which make an ideal Christmas present are available in three varieties, including one for the Seeing Eye Dogs, priced at $15 each.

Making a stand against gender based violence

Holiday fun at

Gisborne Library

The Macedon Ranges Family Violence Network will have a stall at the Woodend and Kyneton Farmers' Markets in December to seek community participation in a new project called Portraits for Respect. This project aims to spread positive messages about gender equality and the prevention of violence against women.

The community will be asked to share messages of what gender equality means to them and if they are willing will be photographed holding their message.

These photos will form a collage of portraits that will be displayed within the Macedon Ranges.

The project is part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence which is a global campaign to raise awareness of violence against women and its impact on women’s physical, psychological and social wellbeing.

The Portraits for Respect photograph booth will be located at the Woodend Farmers' Market on December 2 between 10am and 1pm and the Kyneton Market on December 9 from 10am to 1pm. Join in for a magical Christmas event at the Gisborne Library on Saturday December 9 with kids' garage punk band the Itchy Scabs.

The library says: "They’re noisy and a bit gross, and they’re only allowed in the library ’cos it’s nearly Christmas and we’re feeling nice!"

The Summer Reading Club is on again and will keep primary schoolaged children busy with book challenges over summer holidays. Packs available end of December.

The library is a cool place to hang out to beat the heat over summer. Come in to cool down and relax with a book, on the computer or use our free wi-fi. We are open between Christmas and New Year (except public holidays) from 10-3 as well as Saturday December 30 from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

Macedon Scout achieves Australian Scout Medallion The Australian Scout Medallion is the highest award that a member of the Scout section can achieve.

Dante Le Reveur from 1stMacedon Scout Troop completed his ASM in July this year. Along with nearly 200 other Scouts from throughout Victoria, he was awarded his medallion at a ceremony at the Catholic Regional College in Sydenham on November 25.

Dante says that the best part of Scouting is meeting new friends.

He is pictured here with his old Joey Leader, Beetle, from 1st Gisborne Scout Group, where he started his Scouting journey.

Dante has recently moved on from Scouts and has joined a local Venturer group. He is looking forward to many more years of community engagement, travel and undertaking adventurous activities such as surfing, shooting and scuba diving.

Geneaological Group to resume in February Our last function for the year will be a Christmas Dinner at the Telegraph Hotel at 7.30pm on Friday December 1. This is always a happy occasion and there is great anticipation as the hamper raffles are drawn each year.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors and all the people and organisations who have supported us during the year. Our Thursday volunteers will be taking a much-needed break during January but will be back in the rooms again on February 1 (2-5pm). The annual stocktake will take place on Saturday February 3.

Gisborne CWA finishes up busy year It was a busy month as usual with an Oaks Day outing, a gingerbread house master-class and a day in the city to explore the ANZ bank and museum.

We are so lucky to have beautiful old buildings in Melbourne to visit, also yummy patisseries for morning tea.

Barbara, who gives pastoral care at Gisborne Secondary College, came along to our meeting to tell us about her work and it sounds as though she is in high demand at the school.

The proceeds from the Christmas hamper raf-

fle will go towards her work at the college.

Tickets for our raffle are available over the next couple of weeks in the IGA complex. It will be drawn at the next meeting on December 11 which will end with Christmas lunch and a Kris Kringle. Colours of the month are red, green and gold.

There is a coffee, craft and chat on December 18, then in January a mini golf day at Helen’s instead of our monthly meeting.

Rotary News: riders raise over $2000 Poker Dice Run More than 60 motorcycle riders stormed into Gisborne on November 5 for the Rotary Charity Poker Run in aid of Children with Tumours.

Riders were treated to a hearty Rotary breakfast before setting off to experience the scenic Macedon Ranges area, with stops at Romsey, Malmsbury and Tylden before returning to Gisborne for a Rotary barbecue and prize giving. All agreed that the day was a great success! After raising over $2000 for such a worthy cause the club hopes to make this a bigger event in the future.

Melbourne Cup Eve Gala The Rotary Club of Gisborne hosted a very entertaining evening running a Calcutta on Monday 6 November. With 100 guests attending the event it was very successful, raising funds to support local community projects.

The Gala was held at Highfield Estate with Siggy from Colour of Earth Catering delivering a fantastic dinner.

Probus to visit Archibald before Christmas break The guest speaker at the November Probus meeting was Don Tidbury of Macedon Ranges Health who spoke about the amalgamation with the Benetas organisation for expansion and reconstruction of The Elms with new units to cater for the ageing population of Gisborne. An estimated $60 million will be spent to complete this village.

The last day tour for the year is to the Archibald Prize exhibition in Geelong and the Christmas lunch is at the Gisborne Golf Club. There is no meeting in December or January; we look forward to greeting you again in 2018.

Activities of Macedon Ranges Art Group On the weekend of November 4-5, Macedon Ranges Art Group held the second of its bi-annual art shows for 2017 at the Community Centre in Woodend. The art show clearly demonstrated the wealth of artistic talent in the group. The quality of the work was outstanding with 130 paintings entered. The next planned art show is in 2018 during the Woodend Winter Arts Festival in June.

Our social/painting days have proved so popular that our secretary, Robyn Pryse, is negotiating with the Woodend Neighbourhood House for us to have two sessions a month in 2018. Non-members can attend provided they are accompanied by an MRAG member.

We will take a break in January and begin our activities again in February. Kind of Blue Jazz Duo perform regularly with the support of local venues, sharing their smooth sounds of jazz, blues and bossa nova.

Vocalist Danielle Formica and Gordon Brenkovich on guitar have lengthy musical backgrounds.

Danielle recorded in London and sang with big bands in the West End as well as appearing on stage and television. Marriage and children took over though performing on a smaller scale continued after she moved to Australia in 1971. She now lives in Gisborne.

Gordon has backed and worked extensively with various artists and groups. In the late 1980s, he cofounded Big Apple Studios which was credited as one of the first digital music production houses in Melbourne.

In addition to performing in the duo, Gordon teaches guitar to young students.

Mountview announces 2018 season The Mount Players hosted a wonderful evening on November 3 to launch their 2018 season.

Members and sponsors gathered at the Mountview Theatre to hear directors present their productions for next year.

The evening was also an opportunity to show off newly completed renovations to the theatre: new floor covering, re-upholstered auditorium seats and a fantastic new pergola at the rear of the theatre (to which Bendigo Bank Gisborne granted significant funding).

2017 has been a fantastic year for the company with four very successful productions. Next year’s line-up will be sure to please. It includes a drama, Offshore Island, a deeply personal encounter, Love Letters, the hit musical Les Miserables, and William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Gisborne Singers live up to expectations The Gisborne Singers gave two successful performances of Haydn’s Creation in November, in Kyneton on November 19 and in New Gisborne on November 26.

Conductor Stephen Brockman deftly melded a highly skilled orchestra and soloists with the choir to carry all before it. A combination of passages sung very softly and others presented at full force produced a thrilling effect.

In all, some 200 people were given a real treat at the concerts and the sumptuous afternoon tea after each.

The choir will now concentrate on carols to be sung in aged care homes locally.

In January 2017, some of the choir travelled to New York to perform with Distinguished Concerts International, New York, in the North American premiere of Sir Karl Jenkins’ Cantata Memoria at Carnegie Hall. The work was written in memory of the Aberfan mining tragedy in Wales 50 years ago.

It is planned for the Gisborne Singers to perform this work in May 2018 followed by Fauré’s Requiem in November.

FOR THE GREEN THUMBS Gisborne Garden Club News The final garden visit this year for the Gisborne Garden Club was to the Zen Memorial Garden.

Set within a 20-acre property between Kyneton and Tylden, the house and garden occupies approximately two acres.

Although double story, the house is barely visible within the garden, which has been evolving over the past 40 years and consequently contains a comprehensive selection of very large trees, surrounded by a diversity of shrubbery which in turn is under-planted with all manner of perennials including roses, irises, lavenders, late flowering bulbs and many more species.

Interesting and novel metal and timber artefacts, designed by the owner, enhance the plantings and at every opportunity there is a seat on which to rest and absorb this most diversified and soothing environment. Excellent spring weather ensured maximum enjoyment for the 43 members who attended.

The ongoing development of the area over more recent years and the name “Zen” is a tribute to a daughter who succumbed to motor neurone disease at the age of 22 and entry donations are given to research into this disease.

The club will finish the year with Kerry Langmaid Christmas lunch on December 13 when next year’s program will be distributed. We wish everyone a restful and enjoyable summer break and Greetings for the Christmas Season.

Daly Reserve News Daly Nature Reserve News A thunderstorm the day before the November working bee dampened the ground just enough to plant a few silver wattles which will provide a canopy for native flora to continue to flourish.

The Reserve is full of tiny orchids and lilies. You need to tread carefully to observe them. Friends of Daly Nature Reserve were happy to see the sun orchid in bloom. This plant (Thelymitra aristrata) relies on sunny days to open its petals and can self-pollinate if the weather remains dull.

The sighting of this plant was a first for us in the Reserve.

As the flowers are showing off their colours, the weeds are prolific too. We removed a lot of gorse seedlings.

Tuesday December 12 will be the last working bee for the year and please note we will take a break in January.

Although unsuccessful in obtaining a grant under the Council's People for Places program, Friends of Wyralla Reserve Inc are hopeful that 2018 will see works initiated at Wyralla Reserve. Council officers are being very supportive of the draft Master Plan, and MRSC Parks, Engineering and Environment teams have recently provided feedback with suggestions for modification. Negotiation will continue.

Friends of Wyralla Reserve Inc have also applied to brief councillors about the draft Master Plan. It is hoped that this briefing will occur shortly.

If you have ideas for raising money, let us know. There may be innovative ways to obtain the funds needed to progress projects for the draft Master Plan.

Croquet garden fundraiser a success The Macedon Ranges Croquet Club enjoyed a great tour of one of Mt Macedon’s magnificent gardens – Forest Glade – on October 18.

The Friends of Jacksons Creek group has just finished its 18th year keeping the banks of Jacksons Creek in Gisborne clear of woody weeds, blackberry, rub-bish and debris from storms while adding plants in the mix.

The efforts have helped bring people to the creek area, particularly on weekends when many locals and visitors enjoy the parks, sports grounds and network of walking tracks.

In conjunction with contractors through Melbourne Water, 2018 will see major clearing works take place downstream from Kilmore Road bridge which will include new plantings, the extension of walking tracks and removal of non-native trees at the water’s edge on the north side.

The group unfortunately is getting smaller as members move out of town or have other pressing priorities.

52 households display trash and treasures The whole town garage sale in Gisborne on Saturday November 18 saw 52 households displaying their trash and treasure for inspection by a host of buyers.

Most reported steady sales throughout the warm and sunny day. One lucky seller even found a buyer for his second car.

The GREAT Association organises the garage sale annually as a community service.

NEWS FROM THE COUNCIL COUNCILLOR'S COLUMN With Cr Andrew Twaits Hi everyone. I hope you’ve enjoyed the mid-November rain in parts of the South Ward.

As a step towards providing greater transparency of Council decision-making and a better experience for residents, Council started live streaming meetings in October. You can access the live stream via the MRSC website, and you’ll be able to watch archived footage (tagged to particular agenda items) as well.

The live stream of Council meetings is unlikely to feature on Netflix anytime soon, but if you’re interested in how local government works I’d encourage you to take a look from time to time.

On the finance front, Council officers have made solid progress implementing the operational savings that were identified as part of the budget process in June. Importantly, there have been no material adverse impacts on the nature, scope or quality of the essential services that Council delivers to the community.

The half-yearly budget review process will begin in December and Council may decide to formally revise the budget. If the possible variations are material, Council would naturally consult with the community.

In anticipation of this, I would encourage interested community members to review the adopted budget and the latest quarterly report before letting me and/or other councillors know about any mid-year budgetary changes you would like to see.

In an environment of rate capping, I believe Council must achieve continued productivity improvements in order to fund further investments in infrastructure, core services and innovativion to support our tourism and related industries.

I look forward to hearing from many of you over the coming months.

Introducing the new Council CEO Margot Stork started as Chief Executive Officer of Macedon Ranges Shire on November 13.

Margot has worked in local and state government over the past 15 years. Prior to that, she was a selfemployed legal practitioner working predominantly in family law and Children’s Court matters.

Past roles have included Director of Communications and Director of Service Operations with the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance, and General Manager (CEO) of Murray River Council following the merger of Murray and Wakool shires.

Margot’s work in merging the two councils led to her being awarded the Minister’s Award for a Senior Woman (Rural/Regional) in 2017.

Margot has qualifications in law, economics, accounting, business management, commercial law, project management and public relations.

Mayor elected for another term Cr Jennifer Anderson was re-elected as mayor for the next 12 months on November 22. This is Cr Anderson’s third term as mayor. She previously served as mayor of the shire in 2014-15 and 2016-17. Council chose not to elect a deputy mayor.

Works under way to prepare sports grounds for summer Annual maintenance works are being carried out at Gardiner and Sankey Reserves in Gisborne and Tony Clarke Reserve, Macedon, with completion by Christmas, weather permitting. Some grounds will be temporarily closed for work but not on competition days.

Funding for town planning study State Government funding of $220,000 will assist with two town planning projects for Gisborne.

One project is the development of a new town structure plan that will outline long-term settlement boundaries and guide development. The other is a new urban design framework for the Gisborne town centre, which will guide the form and layout of the central business district, including building and landscaping design, and also identify parking improvements and pedestrian access points.

Gisborne Girl Guides have been challenged this term to make Camp bags. They tiedyed the calico then sewed up the seams. We extend our thanks to Gisborne Secondary College who kindly let us use their machines. The girls then learnt how to embroider their names on to the bags.

This month we welcome Piper to the group.

To end the year, the girls will celebrate with a party and Kris Kringle.

Guides will resume in February.

The girls would like to thank the leaders Deb, Michelle and Ginger for volunteering their time to ensure girls in Gisborne have the opportunity to work together on developing their life skills.

Over the Melbourne Cup weekend, six Scouts from Mitchell Troop rode 108km from Bright to Wangaratta.

With weather in our favour, we travelled 30km to Myrtleford on the first day smashing it out in three hours, leaving plenty of time to relax and kick the footy in the afternoon. We had sausage curry for dinner before playing some more football!

The next day was the hardest day, 42km mostly uphill riding, to Beechworth; what a day it was!

We had many stops along the way to catch our breath and relieve

aching legs. After seven and a half hours, we were physically exerted and exhausted! In the afternoon, we sat and relaxed on our stretchers, and had some welldeserved “spag bog” for dinner!

The final 36km stretch to Wangaratta was a relief! They say “what goes up must come down”, and that served quite well for us!

We flew down the first 15km, then it was reasonably flat all the way to Wangaratta. Two hours later, we proudly crossed the finish line with a little blood, plenty of sweat and a few tears!

'There's something about Cubs'

Cubs is spectacularly awesome!

We get to learn about space, fire, first aid, police, compasses and Scout Laws. And we have cool incursions and excursions! We also earn badges for things like collecting, friendship, handy work, first aid, fishing, codes and signals, and much much more!

My favourite part of Cubs is camping and excursions. If you’re camping and you feel scared or uncomfortable, just ask the leaders. The leaders are always there to help and organize everything.

Our most recent excursion was

our Mystery Walk to the Police Station. We were shown the gun loader, controls, cameras and cells and in the cells, the police slammed the door which was SCARY! Afterward, we got some colouring in sheets and went home.

In my one year left of Cubs, I would like to earn lots more badges including the Grey Wolf which is the highest award in Cubs, and then move up to Scouts. The order of Scouts depends on your age.

6-8 years old Joeys, 8-11 years Cubs, 11-14 years Scouts, 14-17 years Venturers and 17-20 years Rovers. If you’re interested, don’t be afraid to join up.

Sir George Verdon Sir George Verdon, politician, banker and public official, built 'Alton' at Mount Macedon.

By Phyllis and Ian Boyd eorge Frederick Verdon was born near Manchester, England, in 1834, son of the Rev. Edward Verdon and his wife Jane Hobson. George arrived in Victoria in 1851 at the age of 17. After a few weeks on the goldfields, he returned to Melbourne where Governor La Trobe offered him an appointment in the Public Service. This he declined in preference to a position in the Williamstown office of pastoralists and merchants Heape and Grice. In 1856 he was elected to the Williamstown Borough Council.

George joined the Volunteer Williamstown military force and progressed from Lieutenant to Commander. In that role he suppressed a mutiny of convicts who had murdered the Inspector-General of the Penal Department. He was appointed as honorary assistant at the Melbourne Observatory and was also engaged in the survey of the young colony.

He became a member of the Victorian Parliament representing Williamstown and was appointed Treasurer in the Vic-

torian Government in the 1860s.

In 1866 he was appointed to return to England to advise on the condition of Victoria’s defences. From the Imperial Parliament he received a grant of £100,000 that paid for Victoria’s warship “Cerberus”. On his return, with his new award of Companion of the Bath, Verdon established the Royal Mint in Melbourne and was appointed as Agent General for Victoria. After he resigned that office in 1872, he was knighted.

Sir George Verdon CB, KCMG; Fellow of the Royal Society; JP; Associate of the Institute of Civil Engineers; President of Trustees of the Melbourne Public Library; Commission member of all International Exhibitions in Victoria; President of Victorian Institute of Architects; President of the Melbourne Philharmonic Society; President of the Society for Protection of Animals; general manager of the ES&A Bank; chairman of the Associated Banks; magistrate of New South Wales and South Australia and also called to the Bar of Victoria.

In later life Sir George took no part in politics, but always promoted the interests of the land of his adoption.

He died of diabetes at the Melbourne Club on 13 September 1896, having been predeceased by his wife in 1889 and one of his four sons. He is commemorated at the old National Gallery and at the Verdon Library in the Janet Clarke hostel at Melbourne Uni. The following is an edited account of Verdon's words in his Common Place book about establishing “Alton” at Mount Macedon.

“I have altogether 33 acres of land on Mount Macedon, of which seven are on the eastern side of the road. My possessions form part of a reservation made by the government for a governor’s summer residence... But the cost of the government house at Melbourne was so great, the intention of providing another in the country was abandoned and the reserve at Mount Macedon cancelled.

"When I returned to Australia in 1872, the Department of Lands and Survey was desirous of restoring the forests on the summits and slopes of the hills which had been recklessly destroyed by splitters and sawmillers. To induce private persons to undertake this public duty, regulations were made by the Board of Land and Survey for issuing licences to approved applicants for selections in the State forest reserves of not more than ten acres, without residences, but upon special conditions of improvement. The licensee was bound to fence his allotment and to plant

Alton, beginning with its gardens, was established in the 1870s. ten trees an acre of kinds specified by the department. A small annual fee was charged and at any time during the currency of his licence, the occupant might apply to have his land sold by auction at an upset price of £2.10/- an acre, with a valuation of his improvements.

"These conditions were far too light, and too easily loaded. Some of the land at Mount Macedon was taken up by speculators, who planted trees and then allowed them to perish for lack of attention, enclosed their holdings with post and rail fences through which the wallabies freely passed and in short, they not only neglected the prime condition of their tenancy, but excluded others who would have taken up the land in good faith and would have aided in restoring the forest by properly protected plantations.

"Early in 1874, Mr Reed the Architect, Mr Ellery the Government Astronomer, Mr Foord of the Mint and I came to Mount Macedon to make our selections; Mr Ferguson the Inspector of State Forests accompanying us. He told us that the land that had been reserved for a Governor’s Country House was now available for selection, so we proceeded to mark out our allotments... Mr Foord preferred the valley below and he deserted us. Mr Reid went up as high as he could and selected his ten acres next to the Government Plantation at the top of the hill. Mr Ellery took up the section next to Mr Reid and I was pushed down so far along the slope that I could not get a site for a house and sufficient ground for cultivation below it, without exceeding the limit of ten acres prescribed by the regulations. Upon Mr Hodgkinson’s [Surveyor-General's] recommendation, I was permitted to take up 18 acres for which a licence was issued.

"We agreed between us that if any of us desired to abandon his selection, he should give one of the others the option of taking it. Mr Reid, after fencing in his ground, gave up the intention of building a house upon it and allowed me to buy

it in his stead. This purchase was important to me because it stood between the spring upon which I was dependent for my supply of water and the site that I had chosen for my house. One half of Mr Ellery’s selection was in the same line and finding five acres on the eastern side sufficient for his purpose, he sold the rest, which gave me all the land on the western side of the road, between the foot of the slope and the plantation on the summit.

My first work was to clear my original selection of 18 acres and it was then that I became acquainted with Alfred Turner who has been my right hand in all that I have done from that time to this.

"The clearing was a very heavy and costly undertaking. The ground was full of stumps and covered with logs, while many gigantic trees stood naked and dead, ghostly monuments of the great forest with which Mount Macedon had once been clothed. It has been the work of many years to clear the ground and my desire to preserve the indigenous shrubs with which the place abounded added much to the expense and difficulty.

"I had made substantial progress when a bushfire descended from the northern side of the mountain and burned much of my fencing, nearly all the native trees and shrubs and most of those which I had planted. I was so greatly discouraged by this misfortune that I thought of abandoning the land. But Turner represented that in a few years the scrub would have grown up again and that the fire had saved us a good deal of clearing. So I went on and the result has justified all he said.

"The place is again covered with beautiful indigenous plants and the oaks, elms, ashes, sycamores, poplars and various conifers I have added are beginning to show above the heads of the rest with a most excellent effect. Of the following trees and shrubs, the following may be mentioned as the most valuable and interesting. The stringy bark, of which the old forest was mostly composed, has some young representatives which I have preserved."

Jacob Fergusson Jacob is also a very worthy recipient. Jacob was new to Holy Cross this year having come from New Zealand.

Jacob has quickly become part of the Holy Cross furniture! He made friends easily and is a trusted member among his peers. It wasn’t long until the nickname “Fergy” was born.

To his credit, Jacob avoided distraction and applied himself in the classroom, experiencing great success. He was part of the Maths Extension group and was an excellent contributor to his class all year.

Dean Karopoulos – College Captain Dean Karopoulos has been chosen for this award for his enthusiasm and leadership as school captain for 2017. His passion in this leadership role has been a great influence to junior students. As well as contributing to the academic and sporting life at GSC, Dean has represented the school at public events such as the ANZAC day ceremony at Mount Macedon, Hankaku Crane Campaign and World Challenge. Young and older enjoy another satisfying year in the Shed What a year 2017 has been for us. Like everyone, we’ve had our ups and downs but crikey, they’ve mostly been ups!

We’ve signed up a few new members, supported our community with many projects and taught each other plenty of new things. We also kicked off our Young Shedmen program in conjunction with the local KidzFlip organisation.

Pictured are two of our not so young Shedmen, Bill and Merv, presenting our two most successful Young Shedmen, Baillie and Camden, with their Certificates of Completion and new personal tool kits (thanks to Bunnings).

And so to 2018 and all it will bring. We’re already working on some of our plans; what about you?

If you think you really should be downsizing but are holding back because you don’t want to give up your shed, think about making a New Year’s Resolution to see what it would be like if you joined ours. Many of our members have made that move and are glad they did.

Christmas always a time for reflection With Christmas Trees in the shops for the past few months I decided to do my Christmas shopping early. I thought I was ever so smart when I bragged to others, “I have done my Christmas shopping” only to discover that I have no idea who is getting what, which happens when you get too smart.

Stef, one of our lovely carers, has been on holidays and had a tour through the Buchan Caves.

It has been many years since I have been there and the photos in the Parks Buchan Caves Victoria Book are spectacular, so if you’re down that way over the holidays it would be worth a visit.

A lot has been happening at the Elms. Residents went to Living Legends near the airport where the retired race horses live. Residents fed the horses

We also have had discussion groups, patchwork quilting, the Mad Hatter Tea Party, Halloween with a scary movie, Karaoke and the Colour Run which gets so many people each year that like to have paint powder thrown at them.

I believe the residents’ memorial service would have to be the most emotional and beautiful service.

Youth Services At the heart of a healthy community

I looked around the LEP (Life Enhancement Program) room with lots of family, friends and residents as their loved ones’ photo came up on the big screen; some cried and others smiled. I must admit I shed a few tears. I would like to thank everyone who helped organise the beautiful ceremony, the wonderful clergy (ladies and gentlemen), the LEP staff and all the lovely families who helped serve afternoon tea.

Well I guess this is the time of the year that I thank everyone for their help in keeping the residents healthy and happy and from me a big thank you. May you all have a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. May you all be safe in whatever you do over the holidays.

Help make Christmas special for everyone

For families facing challenging times, Christmas can be a stressful, lonely and sad season. That is why the Combined Churches of the Macedon Ranges are once again organising a Christmas “Toy Shop� for families who might struggle to afford a Christmas gift for their child. Last year, more than 130 families were helped.

Whether you are an individual or a business, you can get into the Christmas spirit and give

some joy to local people who really need it.

The Toy Shop relies completely on the generosity of our community to donate gifts to stock the shop. Families are referred to us by local support and welfare agencies and are given a personal invite to attend the shop and pick out toys for their children at no cost.

New toys valued around $20 are needed for boys and girls aged 0 to 18. Donations of books, plush toys and smaller items suitable

as stocking fillers are also welcome. Money is also gratefully received and will only be used to buy toys to stock the shop.

Items for older children are especially needed.

Donations can be dropped into Windarring's office in the foyer of the Gisborne Mechanics Hall between 9am and 3pm until Wednesday December 14, or call Georgina Harvey on 0404 442 891 to arrange a pick-up.

Volunteer program at Macedon Ranges Health

Relay a chance to give hope to many Macedon Ranges residents are encouraged to stand together and help "hope live here" by participating in the Lancefield/Macedon Ranges Relay For Life on the weekend of March 3-4 at Lancefield Park.

A fun and moving overnight experience, Relay For Life supports the Cancer Council to fund research, deliver prevention campaigns and provide services to cancer patients and carers.

The event provides community members with the opportunity to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, patients and careers. A candle ceremony and balloon release also offers participants the chance to honour and remember loved ones lost to cancer.

Early bird registrations cost $20. As of January 15, registrations will cost $35 for adults, $25 for youth participants and $80 for families (two adults and two children).

Macedon Ranges Health (MRH) continues to have fantastic community support for its volunteer program. Individuals come from far and wide, not just Gisborne, Woodend, Kyneton, Macedon but also Sunbury and Bacchus Marsh. Our organisation would not be able to offer such a wide range of services without the support of these volunteers.

Opportunity on Hamilton is staffed by volunteers and this year the shop has gone from strength to strength with many more people becoming aware of its location next to St. Mary’s on Hamilton Street and supporting us. With the amazing assistance of volunteers, the Sensory Garden Project in the Gisborne Oaks was

completed and residents are now enjoying a peaceful and colourful area to sit and enjoy the spring weather.

A recently new innovation has been a music program run by volunteers in the Dementia specific wing of Gisborne Oaks. This program has become so popular with our residents that we intend to expand the program in 2018.

These are just a few of our success stories. I would like to take this opportunity of publicly thanking all our volunteers for their support. I look forward to next year and perhaps welcoming some more people to our program.

Support After Suicide offers special therapy

We meet to provide peer support to people who have lost someone they love to suicide.

An open invitation is offered to attend the Support After Suicide peer support group meeting on Monday December 11 from 7-8:30pm. The meeting will be a creative arts therapy session, offered by therapist Marita Jacobsson, which is a form of counselling using the arts to create and make meaning. It can be especially helpful when words are hard to find and express.

The session will incorporate a creative process for attendees to honour loved ones.

THE 'ROOK REVISITED Gisborne Bushwalkers appreciated the tree-art likeness of forest protector John Le Gerche on their walk on the John Le Gerche trail at Creswick.

With Shirley McKeown While listening to the recent call of the Melbourne Cup, I remembered hearing somewhere that there once was a horse named Bullengarook.

After a little investigation I was able to find a piece printed in the Argus on November 27,1919, about the Bendigo Cup: WON BY BULLENGAROOK. Very Popular Win “…A field of eleven weighed out for the Bendigo Cup… When betting began on the course Bullengarook and Telecles were the opening favourites and they kept their positions. …The race does not call for a great deal of description. Hoprig and Bullengarook were always ahead of their opponents.

Bullengarook took the lead less than half a mile from home, and then just held it to the end…The winner is the first local horse to win the Bendigo Cup and the win was exceedingly popular, cheering greeted Bullengarook as he returned to scale.

"Just recently he has been trained at Caulfield

by J.Tie. He is owned by Mr W.G. Coutts, a grazier of Serpentine."

I found the following lovely write up in the Sporting Globe of December 2, 1931:

“ENDING HIS DAYS IN COMFORT Bullengarook at home "Now 19 years old, Bullengarook is still alive.

He is a great favourite of Mr. Coutts and since his retirement nine years ago he has been turned out in a paddock at his owner’s estate at Serpentine 25 miles from Bendigo.

"Bullengarook has not been called upon to do work of any kind. When the drought left the paddocks barren the old gelding was hand fed…

"On the turf Bullengarook raced 86 times and won 26 races, being unplaced only 16 times…

"The gelding was very fond of his whiskey.

Prior to a race his trainer used to give him two nobblers of the liquor. Nowadays it is not permissible to give a horse a stimulant prior to running in a race."

Bushwalkers build up to year's end The Gisborne Bushwalking Club offers weekend walks as well as regular walks on the first Wednesday in each month of the year.

The Wednesday walk in October attracted 18 walkers to Creswick for a 15km walk that took in sections of the Goldfields Track and the John La Gerche Walk. Leaders Laraine Hanks and Elizabeth Summers described points of interest along the way and selected picturesque locations for drink stops and meal breaks.

In November, a traditional “base camp” was held at Falls Creek where leaders George and Ann Peart hosted 30 walkers and arranged accommodation in Banool Ski Lodge. Beautiful clear crisp days were enjoyed walking to the historic cattlemen’s huts, with a bit of ‘schoolboy’ behaviour when the group crossed some remaining snow drifts on the trail.

The first Friends of Macedon Regional Park field day was held in late November when the Walking Club and Parks Victoria people joined forces to consider how the club could contribute to the community enjoyment of the Park.

After a valuable induction session led by Parks Victoria, there were practical field inspections followed by a barbecue lunch hosted by Parks Victoria.

To round off the year, there will be a Macedon Ranges walk in December, with a festive morning tea and then an even more festive lunch at Olive Jones Restaurant in Macedon.

Last month John Hendry OAM ran sessions for teachers and parents about ‘Resilience and Growth Mindset’ in his role as a facilitator with Resilient Youth. He talked about the importance of seeing ourselves in a positive way and identified the five basic elements of a quality relationship: trust, forgiveness, integrity, hope (optimism) and compassion, all underpinned by ‘giving’.

While Gisborne township was on the receiving end of some heavy downpours during November, there was also a burst of success for our children through Western Water. Congratulations to Asher and Erin from Grade One for their second and third-placed finishes in the National Water Week awards.

It will be an exceptionally late conclusion to the 2017 school year, with staff and students finishing up on Friday December 22. This leaves only the weekend to prepare for the excitement of Christmas Day. I wish to acknowledge the support of School Captains Isaac and Rue in drafting our monthly Gazette articles this year. Everyone's preparing for the next step at St Brigid's In the past few weeks and also leading up to the end of the year, the year 6 students at St Brigid's are undertaking Transition.

During this program the students are opened up to the years ahead of them at Secondary School. They explore deeper into subjects such as Science, English, Mathematics, PE and Health with a Secondary School focus.

The students' work isn’t all that will change; the students will follow a timetable that has them moving around to different classes for different subjects which will help them settle into high school life.

While the Year 6 students are off doing the transition program, the year 5s are undertaking a leadership program where they will explore different aspects of leadership that will help them prepare a leadership speech which they will hopefully present to the whole school.

The year 5s also explore how to be a good leader themselves. We are all looking forward to having a jam-packed next

Middles: The middles are focusing on their Middle Market. They have been

looking at the steps to what makes a product and its journey from ideas stage to retail selling. This is helping them de-

velop their own product – which will be presented and available for everyone to buy. The money will then go to the Ronald McDonald House charity.

Some of the products opened up to sell are chocolate mousse, pendants and pet rocks, arts and crafts and much more. We are all looking forward to see all the hard work that the middles have put into their products.

Juniors: In the past few weeks the Juniors have been preparing to welcome new additions to the team, the new preps for next year! In the next few weeks the 2018 preps will be undertaking a whole new journey to prepare them for the primary school life. While they are getting settled they are focusing on aspects of school life different to their kinder/home life. They are learning how to be ready and happy to be finally joining us and our school community. We wish them the best of luck in their future years at St Brigid’s!

Students make the most of good weather at Queenscliff.

Mt Macedon Primary School's camp by the sea a big hit On November 13 Grades 4, 5 and 6 went on a camp to Queenscliff and stayed at Cottage By The Sea. We did a range of activities that included beach games, night walks, a ferry ride, rock pools, and visiting the Marine Discovery Centre and Fort Queenscliff.

Cottage By The Sea supplied us with heathy food (and lots of ice cream). We learnt lots about the pilot boats, and how the pilots board the big container ships and guide them through the Rip. At the Maritime Museum we learnt about how the pilots have to line up the lighthouse’s lights (there are three lighthouses).

We went rock-pooling with the Marine Discovery Cen-

tre and saw lots of different marine animals. Most of the animals are really small like a sea snail.

Nils in grade 4 said the night walks were fun and the whole camp was extraordinary. Charlotte in Grade 5 thought Mr Flynn finding the gummy shark was the best and that camp was cool. Henry told us that Fort Queenscliff was his favourite part and that the whole camp was great.

We would like to thank everyone who has helped our school in 2017, the teachers, parents, students and many more, without whom we would not have had such a good year doing all the fun things we did.

Congratulations to academy student Congratulations to Cindy Wilson for receiving the Student of the Year 2017 Award at HeadMasters Academy. Cindy is currently a Year 12 VCAL student who completed her Certificate III in Beauty Studies this year.

Cindy is an exemplary student at Gisborne Secondary College and conducted herself in the same manner during her studies at Headmasters Academy. Her determination and hard work paid

off in with such recognition at the end of her two-year program.

To complete her studies Cindy had to attend the academy in Melbourne every Wednesday for two years. This meant catching up on work from her missed classes in her own time.

Cindy has been offered a job at Myer where she will be joining her twin sister Evlyn who was the recipient of the same award for 2016.

We wish Cindy all the best for future.

Exams are over and scores, university offers and scholarships are on their way. For many of us at the school, a year’s worth of hard work is paying off.

Students are on their way to Cambodia and Laos as part of World Challenge and many are moving out of home to prepare for university. For most of us, the adventure is only beginning.

This year, the school and the community have provided us with a wealth of opportunities and experiences that have taught us about confidence, commitment, humility, and most importantly, passion. It’s those qualities that pave the path to adulthood and we will forever be thankful to our teachers, our families and our friends for being able to show us the way. It has been a fantastic year.

Finally, we’d like to thank the Gisborne Gazette for allowing us to write; it’s been an honour and a privilege, and a huge part of that path for both of us.

Hands-on experience leads to Kinder fun Windfall for Macedon Kinder

When I grow up I want to be a policeman Some children’s love of the police inspired staff of Manna Gum Children’s Centre to organise a visit by Victoria Police. On November 23, Senior Constable Nigel Lusk spoke to all the children about the role of police in the community and about being safe. The children got to check out the fancy police car. And loved it.

A group of Year 9 students from Sacred Heart College in Kyneton have been developing their project management and construction skills through their involvement in the LINCS Program. LINCS (for Learning, Initiating, Networking and Connecting for Success) is an alternative applied learning subject offered to Year 9 students.

The major project for this year was to design, create and deliver play equipment for use by children at Macedon Kindergarten. The Sacred Heart students and their teachers visited the kinder earlier in the year, meeting kindergarten teacher Kate Weir and some of her pupils to discuss the types of equipment they might enjoy using.

They decided to design and build a Cubbyhouse Cube as well as a ‘Mud Kitchen’ (a mini kitchen designed for sandpit and mud play).

After much hard work throughout the year, the LINCS students and their teachers delivered the finished projects to the kindergarten early in Term 4.

There was great excitement as the kinder students played with their new outside kitchen and explored the cube. Morning tea and a song ended the presentation as the kindergarten thanked the students who made their playground visions come to life.

Remembrance Day in Gisborne

 Lloyd Williams’ Macedon Lodge once again became the home of a new Melbourne Cup winner with the success of Rekindling. Mr Williams also scored the quinella when another of his part-owned horses Johannes Vermeer claimed second place.

The Remembrance Day service was well attended in Gisborne again in November and the RSL thanks the community for their participation in this important annual event.

 Midnight Oil led by Peter Garret performed at their best for a capacity crowd at Hanging Rock on November 4.  Council has refused an application for a telecommunication tower at 372 Barringo Road, New Gisborne, because of its proximity to Highfield Estate.  The Yes vote for the same sex marriage survey in McEwen exceeded the national figure with 65.7 per cent of voters choosing that option. The participation rate for McEwen was 80.7 per cent.

The RSL is still awaiting confirmation of government grants with which we hoped to complete the following projects in time for Anzac Day 2018:  The cutting out of a rough granite block on the Cenotaph and fixing plaques which will have the names of Gisborne veterans of WW2, Korea and Vietnam.  An Interpretive Sign to be installed on the path to the cenotaph, which can be changed from time to time, depicting various Gisborne veterans, firstly of WW1.

Mt Macedon Golf Club is at its best Mount Macedon Golf Club continues to thrive since last reporting. Robbie Beatson, supported by a band of dedicated volunteers, presented the course in magnificent condition for the recently held MMGC Open competitions. On a fine Saturday a keen field gathered for a two-person aggregate stableford.

Congratulations to Andrew Gray and Keith Miles who triumphed with 76 points.

The main event on the Sunday, a 27-hole stroke contest, was played in warm conditions with the scratch prize turning out to be a tight competition between the lower handicap players. Congratulations to this year’s Open Champion, Chris Lingard from Lancefield Golf Club, with a very respectable scratch score of 106.

At the AGM in September it was largely business

as usual with President Glenn Moore, Captain Jerome Langmaid and Treasurer Bob Close continuing in their roles. It is great to have former president Marcus Ward rejoining the committee in the capacity of secretary.

Office bearers will be ably assisted by general committee members Brian Freestone, Matt Willis, Peter Semmens, Mick Doyle and Ian Gill. A solemn minute’s silence was held to remember those who had passed during the year.

'Matching the hatch' on Moorabool When it comes to club trips, the Calder Fly Fishing Association is willing to travel far and wide. Recent trips have seen members fishing saltwater in Gippsland, creeks in the high country and rivers in the Snowy Mountains.

For our latest day trip we set our sights a little closer to home. Situated around an hour from Gisborne, the Moorabool Reservoir at Bolwarrah is a large domestic water storage that has received plenty of trout stocking support from Victorian Fisheries Authority.

A group of a dozen anglers was treated to amazing conditions at the reservoir with the fish and aquatic life putting on a real display.

One of the challenges of fly fishing is “matching the hatch” where anglers need to imitate the bugs and insects the trout are feeding on. These feeding habits are changing constantly which often puts the trout one step ahead of the angler. Casting to picky trout can be frustrating at times with several fly changes required to outwit our fishy foe.

A fantastic time was had by all members with many catching great size trout including plenty of tales about the one that got away. Club outings remind us it’s not always about the large numbers of fish you catch but the new techniques you were able to try, the new places we visit and the continued friendships we form.

Gisborne wins big with mower award Gisborne Golf Club is the lucky recipient of a preowned Toro Triflex 3400 mower, thanks to Toro Australia’s Support and Grow Grants Program.

With an estimated value of $18,000, the new mower will give a much-needed boost to maintaining the course and grounds as well as ensuring that staff and volunteers have the right equipment for the job.

Gisborne Golf Club recently introduced a volunteer brigade to help cope with the need to reduce staffing levels. The volunteers need to be trained and educated without interfering with the continuing maintenance of the greens, tees and fairways.

General Manager Bill Papadimitriou said the new machinery was vital to help achieve this. “Winning this mower is an absolute blessing for a club like ours.

It’s an amazing gift from Toro who support course superintendents everywhere; their support is really 24/7. Our club is just beside itself and really excited to have this opportunity.”

Mixed Martial Arts students kept on their toes After competing successfully in three National All Styles tournaments throughout the year, Gisborne Mixed Martial Arts members tested their skills at the Victorian State Titles in October.

The National All Styles are open to every style of martial arts.

These tournaments cater for many aspects of every style including point sparring, continuous sparring,

Kata (pattern work), weapons and team events.

Ten local students got first places, 12 got second and 14 got third. Ten students progress to the Australian Titles to be held in Sydney on December 2-3.

Petanque Club wraps up a good year

November and December are busy months for several Mt Macedon Petanque Club members.

During November there were competitions in Avoca and Hanging Rock. Eight players from the club attended the two-day Avoca Tournament. The following week the Woodend and Hanging Rock tournament attracted nine players.

December will see numbers attend the Victorian mixed doubles and same gender doubles in Melbourne.

This successful year for the club will end with

a break-up at the playing area, when fun games will be played.

The club has enjoyed the support of Gisborne & District Bendigo Bank staff, MRSC, especially the Parks and Gardens crew, and Western Water. We also congratulate the Gisborne Gazette team for their exceptional local paper.

Macedon Ranges Croquet Club Congratulations to all club members for their wonderful support of the Croquet Club's recent social day. It was another special day on the calendar and once again members showed the region what they are capable of. Gill and Jean: well done once again.

The day was cold but new members Elaine and Beryl scored the day for the first time – a fabulous effort. Thanks go to Val also who soldiered on at the trading table in very unsociable weather. The day yielded great results financially and socially. The overall winner came from Western Ballarat and Macedon Ranges' Ken Anders was runner up in a play-off for first place.

Adult Riders keep bit between their teeth It’s been a busy few weeks for the Gisborne District Adult Riding Club (GDARC). The annual Dressage Jackpot on October 8 was a windy but successful day with a great turnout of riders from across the region. Our Annual General Meeting on October 13 included electing office bearers and awarding our high point winners for the year. The winners were dressage: Nicole McOwn; show jumping: Talia Bognar; horse trails: Talia Bognar; nav rides: Tamm Georgaloudis and combined training: Nicole McOwn. The club also had its Dressage and Combined training day on November 6 and monthly rally on the 11th.

As well as attending all of the club events, many members have been out having great success competing at events across the region.

Gisborne District Adult Riding Club is a friendly social club that welcomes members of all levels of riding experience. The club has members who are not long starting out, those who are returning to riding after a long break and those who are more advanced through the levels.

The annual Macedon Ranges Summer Orienteering series got under way on November 29 at JD Clifford Reserve in Greene Street, Macedon.

This activity is a good way for the whole family to add to their summer exercise program as a group. The events are held in various towns within the shire. The maps are like a street directory, but with the names of the streets removed to keep you on your toes. Parkland will be used as much as possible, combined with some street walking/running, depending on which course you choose.

Everyone starts at 7pm, with walkers having to return by 8pm or suffer a penalty, like a car rally. Runners choose to find a certain number of controls, with first back the winner in Maps will be provided – with A, B or C classes. street names removed.

Arrive about 20 minutes early to register. If you are bringing a large group (eg Scouts) please let us know.

The cost is $5 per map, including map and novice instruction, $2 children. You don’t need a compass, especially on sunny evenings. Just wear active clothing suited to the weather. There are no traffic restrictions or road closures, all competitors must cross roads safely, and children should be accompanied by an adult. The courses are pram friendly.

The next two Wednesdays’ events will start from Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve (December 6) and Kyneton Botanical Gardens (December 13) .

The series resumes after the school holidays on January 30, with four events in three towns – Sunbury, Woodend and the finale at Gisborne on February 21.

A year of contrasts for cyclists in 2017 It’s been a year of contrasts when it comes to safety on the bike out on our roads.

A number of high profile deaths occurred during endurance events around the world after collisions with other vehicles. None hit home harder than the death of Mike Hall in March this year while riding from Cooma to Canberra. Locally we had a very serious incident on Black Forest Drive when a car drove straight through the back of

three visiting cyclists in broad daylight. One of the cyclists is still going through recovery and therapy. It was enough for some of our local riders to call for Black Forest Drive to be converted to a single lane highway, a move we at Bike Safe Macedon Ranges endorse and support.

We were also disappointed with the government decision to not introduce a trial of the minimum passing space laws

and bring Victoria into step with most other states and territories. We continue to lobby for a change in this area.

On a positive note, many local cyclists have reported good behaviour from other road users when being passed on our local roads. We like to think that our message of “Sharing the Road” has had some effect.

Gisborne Thunder Swimming Club What an exciting year 2017 has been for Gisborne Thunder Swimming Club, filled with successful Swimming Victoria competitions and the club's increasingly popular monthly club nights.

Swimmers have also had the opportunity to train with elite swimming coach Brad Harris for intense skillsfocused sessions: a wonderful learning experience for everyone.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the squad coaches, Laura O'Meara, Stephanie Bartalmio, Laura Butler and Wayne Wilson for all of their hard work and commitment to the swimmers this year. Your dedication and support is truly appreciated.

So much has been happening over the past few weeks at Gisborne Golf Club. The course is looking fantastic and with the weather warming up it will only continue to improve.

The ladies and gents of the club were out in force on November 10 competing in the Open ladies and Veterans men’s tournament and what a wonderful day it was. The lady members and ladies committee did a great job of organising and there were players from all over; from Yea, Horsham, Ballan, Ballarat, Seymour and Werribee to our neighbouring clubs of Goonawarra, Trentham and Woodend.

Jessica Pickwick was the A Grade gross winner with a score of 79 with a handicap of -1! Amazing stuff Jessica, and she retains the Open Trophy. The Gisborne ladies also did quite well with Fran Crimmins, Betty Glover and Robyn Butler all winning prizes.

In the last article I mentioned the Murray Downs trip back in October.

Although there were high jinx galore, there was also a lot of golf played. Gisborne walked away winners of the Bowl with the team of Adrienne Fievez, Marg Power, Fran Crimmins and Lyn Wells.

Mary Ivory, Kath Keating, Jocelyn Moreland and Rhonda Gilmore also did Emma Brown very well.

Anglican parish welcomes new priest On December 11, after a great deal of anticipation, the Anglican Parish of Gisborne – which includes Gisborne, Macedon and Riddell’s Creek – is warmly celebrating the inauguration of the new priest, Father Dennis Webster, ‘Dennis’.

Dennis has broad experience in parishes across Melbourne and a number in Tasmania, including roles at St David’s Cathedral, Hobart, where he was cantor, lay reader, sacristan, youth leader and councillor.

He initially trained as a musician and holds a Bachelor of Music (Education) from the University of Tasmania and went on to study at Trinity College Melbourne.

Dennis has been vicar at St Stephen’s Richmond for the past nine years where he developed a Food Centre for Richmond churches assisting in Food Security initiatives for more than 500 households each week.

While at St Stephen’s he served as

Area Dean of Melbourne, Public Officer for XL Arts Incorporated, Vice-President of the Victorian Council of Churches, active participant and supporter of the Yarra Interfaith Forum – just some of his experience in the church and wider community. He is a keen sportsperson (you will have to ask him personally which AFL team he supports) and also is an active composer for liturgy.

A special combined Gisborne Parish churches and community Christmas carol service will be held on December 17 at the Church of the Resurrection Macedon.

Our annual children’s and family service will be at St John’s Riddells Creek at 6pm on Christmas Eve. If children would like to come in a themed costume they can be part of our nativity story. Please contact the Parish office for details on these and other Christmas services.

Dynamic duo returns to Gisborne We welcome once again Dave and Rosanna Palmer who will be ministering at our combined Gisborne church service on December 31 at Gisborne Church of Christ at 10am. They both played and shared at FaithWorks on October 29 and it was an absolute blessing to have them – you don’t want to miss the opportunity to see them!

Dave and Rosanna formed the band ‘Rosanna’s Raiders’ in 1981.

They have played in concert halls, Churches, prisons and schools

around the nation, as well as touring overseas. One of their songs, Breakaway, became a Top 10 hit on Christian rock radio in the US and garnered a Dove Award nomination.

They both have also written many books. Originally they were a rock covers band playing the mainstream circuit

around Australia, however the group rededicated their lives to God and became one of this country’s first Christian rock acts. We look forward to what they will be sharing with both their music and wisdom! Please come along for a great impactful morning.

GISBORNE UNITING CHURCH Gisborne Uniting Church will be hosting a barbecue in the car park at the front of the Church in Brantome Street on December 15 from 5:30pm. DECEMBER 1917 Gisborne Shire Council Meeting – Condolence Motion. Cr. Bawden referred to the death of Mr. George Cherry, and said Gisborne would every day feel the loss more.

Mr. Cherry was an upright man, and his place as a citizen would be very hard to fill.

He would move that a letter of condolence be sent to Mrs. Cherry and family. Cr. Pierce said he regretted having to second such a motion. Mr. Cherry was a member of the Council for many years, as well as various public institutions, and his loss would be very much felt. The motion was carried in silence, all members standing.

War News – The British troops, under General Sir Edmund Allenby, are now within 31 miles of Jerusalem, and the Turks on all sides are falling back. The Australians are doing well, as will be seen by the following message from General Allenby to the Secretary for State: “Please convey to the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia the warm thanks of myself and all ranks under my command for the welcome message of congratulation from him and the Government and people of Australia. I am proud to have under my command the splendid Australian troops. They have fought magnificently and well maintained the high reputation they had already won.”

St Paul's Op Shop Jottings Another year of Op Shopping has almost come to a close and I would like to say a big “thank you” to our many customers and to the generous and supportive people in the community who donated goods to our Op Shop throughout the year.

Call in during December and you will be greeted with Christmas cake and lollies for the children.

We have a huge range of Christmas stock which is topped up each day. We also have lots of festive party dresses for sale.
