ALWAYS NAKED Who are they? No one really knows the right story to tell here. How were they formed? How were they named? Why were they named Always Naked? They aren’t really naked, and isn’t that a direct contradiction to what they’re selling on shirts and sweaters? They figure they might as well just be ass backwards and having fun. What type of music do they play? While much of the Always Naked lyrics are serious and a bit lifetime story-telly, the music itself is drum- and bassheavy, head-banging alt rock. Always Naked tends to shock people into listening and then somehow makes you love them.
THE CHRIS EGER BAND A bona fide “quadruple threat,” Eger is a multi-instrumentalist, accomplished songwriter, kickbutt showman, and sensational vocalist for which he was awarded Best Male Vocalist 2018 by the Washington Blues Society. Chris is backed by bassist and father Randall Eger, drummer Mark Clark—a veteran of the Northwest music scene, and Chance White—a Kilgetty, Wales, native whose keyboard work is a tasteful and scintillating addition to the rhythm section. Also featured are the acclaimed Powerhouse Horns from Seattle, who bring a tight, funky punch to the band’s already impressive sound.

NAKED GIANTS Seattle’s Naked Giants burst onto the national music scene with their 2018 full-length debut, SLUFF, a candied and insanely catchy blast of unhinged pop-punk-grunge-surf-rock. But if that record was the sound of, as one reviewer labeled them, a trio of “affable miscreants just out of high school” getting their musical rocks off, then The Shadow, the band’s new and second studio effort, is in comparison a decidedly more—what’s the word?—mature offering. That is, if “mature” is the appropriate term for an album where one member is credited with playing a fun machine, and another merely with having “charisma.” And so, welcome once again to the extraordinary and eccentric world of Naked Giants. They might be older (average age: 23) and wiser, but the band members—singer and guitarist Grant Mullen, singer and bassist Gianni Aiello, and drummer Henry LaVallee— are still out to conjure a rip-roaring good time.
BROHAMM Inspired by the R&B Legends of the ‘60s and ‘70s, the Hammond Brothers grew up in a musical family and learned to perform at an early age. Their distinctive harmonies, combined with a driving rhythm section, makes spending an evening with BroHamM a very special event.

ZAN FISKUM Every once in a while, there’s a voice that seems to strike a note for each generation. That voice takes you to a place that’s more intimate than public and more expressive and exuberant than what you expected. Zan Fiskum has that voice. From her childhood experiences in community musical theater to her soaring interpretation of Bob Dylan’s classic, “Blowin’ In The Wind,” Zan has grown leaps and bounds and may possibly be one of the most dynamic female vocalists to emerge from the Pacific Northwest since Ann Wilson or Brandi Carlile. Not only is her voice a spectacular instrument, her song-writing will take you on a journey to travel inside the passion and the pain of today’s youthful anxieties. Zan’s debut CD, Sleeping Problems, makes her statement through beautiful thematic anthems and love songs, deep with meaning and passion. Working with her producer and sometimes co-writer, Alec Shaw, Zan brings to the table this wonderful collection of songs and stories. JACOB NAVARRO DUO Jacob Navarro is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based out of Anacortes, Washington, who you’ve probably never heard of, but people you have heard of know him. He has had a wide-ranging and eclectic career collaborating with the likes of Eddie Vedder, The Secret Sisters, George Schwindt of Flogging Molly, and banjo virtuoso Danny Barnes. His recordings can be heard on Sony Pictures, The Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and Spike TV. Accompanying him on guitar is Navid Eliot, an accomplished guitar player and songwriter out of Portland, Oregon, whose original music can be heard with his band Bodies On The Beach.

OUTSIDE THE LINES The group takes inspiration from many different musical genres: classic rock, great singer/ songwriters, country, pop, and even metal. Although many well-known songs are included in their repertoire, they also like to wander “outside the lines” by switching genres or adding a new spin to make a song unique. An acoustic ballad version of a popular metal song? Bluegrass version of a modern pop song? Outside the Lines provides a fun mix that will entertain any audience. Colette (vocals, percussion) has been an avid vocalist for many years, fronting rock, country, and acoustic groups. She’s “a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll,” bringing a vocal style to the group that is always fun and entertaining. Jason (guitar, vocals) has been writing, performing, recording, and producing for over 10 years. He has performed in several local groups on guitar, bass, keyboards, and vocals, with styles ranging from metal to indie. His unique perspective and interpretation help shape the sound and arrangements for the group. Michael (guitar, vocals) has extensive experience performing in a number of cover bands as guitarist and lead vocalist. Genres have ranged from blues to classic rock to funk to acoustic ballads. He began his musical career on the east coast before moving to the northwest and joining the local music community.

King of Hawaii is an all-instrumental 5-piece band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1995 by lead guitarist Mark Klebeck. Through local and national radio airplay, the band has established a following within the instrumental surf music community performing alongside legendary acts such as The Ventures, Los Straightjackets, Dick Dale, Link Wray, The Beach Boys, and more. The band has released four original albums, including the self-titled King of Hawaii, Henry Call Home, the holiday favorite, Mele Kalikimaka, and their newest, Road Trip. All have garnered praise from reviewers and independent radio and led to the band performing shows up and down the west coast.
BYB’s recently released single, “One Bedroom Apartment,” has already reached over 10,000 streams. They are currently working on their second album, which will be even more bold and creative than their first.

KRISTEN GRAINGER & TRUE NORTH Fronted by singer-songwriter Kristen Grainger, the folk-bluegrass powerhouse of True North includes Dan Wetzel (guitar, mandolin), Martin Stevens (mandolin, fiddle), and Josh Adkins (bass). Everybody sings. The band’s newest release, Ghost Tattoo, is #2 on Folk Alliance International Top Albums of 2020, #12 on Folk Alley’s Listeners’ Choice Top 20 Albums of 2020, and hit #1 on FAI folk radio charts for both albums and singles. A songwriter whose star is rising, Kristen was named, alongside Brandi Carlile and Dolly Parton, one of the Women Who Wrote Our 2020 Soundtrack by The Bluegrass Situation. Kristen just won the 2020 USA Songwriting Competition (Folk), and she has won or been a finalist in national songwriting contests at Telluride Bluegrass Festival (CO), Wildflower Festival (TX), Merlefest (NC), and Kerrville New Folk (TX).

NATHANIEL TALBOT It’s a busy life for songwriter and farmer Nathaniel Talbot, who runs an organic vegetable farm and seed company on Whidbey Island. When not out cultivating onions using his solar-powered tractor, he’s inside cultivating songs that are rooted in the earth and American traditionalism. He was raised in the wooded foothills southeast of Portland, Oregon, where the big firs and wide farmscapes of childhood made a life-long impression on his songwriting. “The natural setting imprinted on my sense of self and populated my brain with the imagery and storylines that would later manifest in my songwriting.” He began learning piano at age seven, started a punk rock band at thirteen, and quickly thereafter began steeping himself in guitar-driven sounds of Kelly Joe Phelps, Elliott Smith, Bill Frisell, and other Pacific Northwest heroes. Over the next 15 years, Talbot honed an approach to songwriting and storytelling, driven by his complex, yet delicate, fingerstyle guitar work, which has earned him a distinct place in the northwest folk scene.

A singer’s talent is complete when they can bring a crowded dive bar to a collective hush and also get one of the biggest audiences on the planet to a collective standing ovation. Stephanie Anne Johnson is that special singer. The front person for the Tacomabased band, The Hidogs, she can don a cowboy hat and sing over a slide as old-timers weep. And they wowed judges on the immensely popular NBC TV series, The Voice, showcasing their gifts. Perhaps it’s no surprise that Johnson is so affecting. Their mantra, after all, is “Find your joy and go there.” Their prowess exudes whether they are singing the Black national anthem—“Lift Every Voice And Sing”—to a packed auditorium or cooing acoustic lullabies to Saturday night tavern regulars. Their music, which is rooted in all that’s American, expresses the pain of the past, the roots of the down home, and the hope that hard work will lead to proper reward. The Hidogs, which is comprised of dynamic drummer Arturo Ortega Marcos, pocket-perfect bassist Jesse Turcotte, and the prolific Johnson, is a nimble trio as capable of shaking the shingles off a rooftop as making any stage feel like a Sunday service. The group’s latest LP, Take This Love, is a blend of Loretta Lynn and Valerie June. It’s a stunning catalogue of surprise and satisfaction.

SHAGGY SWEET Since 2009, Shaggy Sweet’s eclectic mix of blues/rock/R&B cover songs and original compositions has been captivating audiences all over the Pacific Northwest. Spanning multiple decades, cover songs by Jimi Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Beatles, John Mayer, and Tom Petty, among many other classic rock and current artists, are mainstays of the band’s repertoire and always have audiences on their feet. LOCARNO
Locarno is the Latin project of Vancouver-based musician Tom Landa. Like him, the music is equal parts Mexican and Canadian. Tom was born and raised in Mexico City and moved to Canada in his teens. In the 1990s, he formed folk-roots band The Paperboys, who have been touring worldwide for over 20 years. Tom has always dabbled in Latin music and later decided to immerse himself in the genre. Locarno have focused their sound and incorporated influences such as music from Columbia, African Soukous, Mexican marimba music, Venezuela joropo, and Brazilian forró. The band shines the most during their live shows, which feature Tom Landa on guitar, Kalissa Landa on violin, Robin Layne and Liam MacDonald on percussion, Pedro Mota on guitar and vocals, Aaron McKinney on bass, Mark D’Angelo on trumpet, and Nick La Rivere on trombone.

Steve Fossen and Michael Derosier, bassist and drummer for the band Heart during the 70s and early 80s, are now touring as Heart By Heart. “Our mission is to perform the classic Heart music as faithfully as we can,” Fossen says. The band features vocalist Somar Macek, guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Lizzy Daymont, and guitarist Chad Quist. Heart By Heart presents a powerful, dynamic show that includes all the favorite Heart hits as well as deep album cuts that fans will love. Fossen and Derosier were the powerful driving engine behind Heart’s classic hits like “Barracuda,” “Straight On,” “Crazy On You,” “Magic Man,” “Even It Up,” “Dog & Butterfly,” “Heartless,” “Kick It Out,” and more. First formed by Steve Fossen in 1969, Heart went on to release six top-10 albums and landed 20 hit singles on the Billboard top 40 chart. In recognition of their contributions to these iconic recordings, and to Heart’s first seven years of national and international touring, Fossen and Derosier were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the rest of the original Heart lineup in 2013.

TEEN TALENT SHOWCASE MARIE JACKSON A Virginia native, Marie has been making music their whole life. They started out playing violin and piano then taught themselves how to play the ukulele one “boring summer.” Now Marie plays the electric guitar for their church praise band and the Oak Harbor High School Jazz Band; they also played trumpet and now French horn for OHHS Wind Ensemble. Besides music, Marie also enjoys picking up a flag and rifle with the OHHS Color Guard for Show Band and winter guard, picking up their skate board, being involved in their Boy Scout troop, and creating new music.
ETHAN TANG & GERIC GUERRERO Ethan Tang is a 13-year-old Oak Harbor native who plays bari sax, dancing along to its deep groovy tone. He believes music is a universal language, where he feels that he can project his voice and emotion through song, because when words fail, music speaks. He’s stoked to play some funky tunes with Geric Guerrero.
CHRIS KING Chris King is a senior in high school and really truly does enjoy being a goodlooking, talented, young, down-to-earth guy and all-around-absolute-beesknees-man-aw-geeze.
KYLE HUANG Pianist Kyle Huang has been studying piano for nine years under the instruction of Anna Vavilova, Dr. Sasha Malikov, and Leon Bernsdorf. He has won countless awards in Canada and the United States. In addition to playing piano, Kyle enjoys playing sports and cooking.
Tenth-grader Geric Guerrero has been playing alto saxophone since the 5th grade and currently plays in the Oak Harbor High School Jazz Band. In addition to playing the sax, he enjoys sports, keeping physically fit by playing football, basketball, and volleyball and studying taekwondo. Ethan and Geric met through taekwondo and won the 2018 Whidbey Has Talent when they performed a martial arts routine. They both enjoy the thrill and energy that comes with performance!
DANIKA KLOEWER Danika Kloewer is 13 years old and an upcoming 8th grader. She’s an aspiring singer and plays guitar and ukulele. In 2018 and 2019, she won 1st and 2nd place, presentation division, in the Whidbey Has Talent competition. She is always striving to work harder and be the best she can be, hoping to progress as a singer and start writing her own songs. She also loves to play volleyball, dance, and play video games. She’s very thankful for the support of her family and friends.

Rosahlee is an 18-year-old singer/ songwriter from Whidbey Island, Washington. She plays ukulele, guitar, piano, and bass. Her first experience with the Oak Harbor Music Festival was in 2017 as a Teen Talent participant at age 14, when she debuted her first original composition, “Can’t Tell Me No.” She was so inspired by the experience that she continued to pursue her love of music, songwriting, and live performance and was fortunate enough to be able to return to perform at the festival again in 2018 and 2019. This is her last eligible year to perform in the Teen Talent Showcase, and she is so excited and grateful to be a part of the event one last time.

ANDRE FERIANTE With four decades of performing and recording, award-winning virtuoso guitarist Andre Feriante has left his musical mark on the classical, neo-flamenco, world music, and fusion scenes. A crossover artist in the vein of Yo Yo Ma or Sting, his performance program represents a bold but fluid musical fusion, featuring music from Bach to Leonard Cohen, flamenco improvisation to jazz standards, Americana to World Music, and even poetry. Born in Naples, Italy, Feriante is a world renowned virtuoso musician who plays 43 instruments, among them the Spanish guitar, harp guitar, ukulele, harp ukulele, nylon string banjo, charango, oud, saz, shamisen, ruan, and sitar. He has studied with great artists and has performed all over the world. In addition to his busy performance schedule, Feriante has released 14 albums, has hosted “La Guitarra,” on Classic King FM 98.1, has presented on the TEDx stage, and directs the Whidbey Island Guitar Festival and Seattle Guitar Night.

2020 and 2021 SCHOLARSHIPS ED BRIDGES MEMORIAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is given in honor of Ed Bridges, who was the Oak Harbor High School music director in the 1970s. He was an inspiration to many young musicians who have gone on to make music their careers. We awarded scholarships in his name to two music students on Whidbey Island.

BROKEN BANJO
The Whidbey Island band Broken Banjo could be described as a folk/Americana vocal group, but that would not begin to describe the range of what this exciting trio delivers. Each member brings something special from their diverse backgrounds and influences. In the span of a few songs, Broken Banjo can move from a soulful ballad or jazz standard to a classic blues song. What makes them intriguing is their unique arrangements with three-part harmony. With Larry Mason on rhythm guitar, Kevin Johnson on lead acoustic and electric, and Deirdre Fairfax on guitar and lead vocals, the three creatively collaborate from their own perspectives and strengths to put a “Broken Banjo stamp” on each song. Their name was adopted from Deirdre’s father’s music and coffee house in the small town of Millington, Illinois, in the mid60s. It seemed like a perfect namesake for the band that loves to share songs that span across genres and time.

THE HOT CLUB OF TROY
The Hot Club of Troy plays music in the style of the renowned Quintet of the Hot Club of France and its legendary leader, guitarist Django Reinhardt. Reinhardt, along with the immortal violinist Stéphane Grappelli, created a genre sometimes called gypsy jazz, manouche swing, or just plain Django music. The Hot Club of Troy’s music swings with a wild abandon that allows sparkling melodies to rise from the pulsing rhythm guitars, clarinet, saxophone, percussion, and bass. Guitarist Troy Chapman, deeply versed in the playing style of the great gypsy guitar master, introduces the audience to the grooving dance tunes and the haunting melodies of the Roaring ’20s, which sound as vibrant and fresh today as the day they were written. Troy brings us into the 2021 roaring ’20s with his own compositions as inspired by Django. Joined by the outstanding musicianship of Eric Vanderbilt-Mathews on reeds, Keith Bowers on guitar, and Kristi O’Donnell on upright bass, The Hot Club of Troy will take you on a time-travel musical journey and, perhaps, lift you off your feet!

SWAY WILD
Internationally acclaimed indie folk-rock duo Mandy Fer and Dave McGraw are back at it with a new sound and a new name: Sway Wild. Their exceptional vocal harmonies, coupled with Fer’s pioneering electric guitar work, have become a vehicle to carry them around the world, sharing stages with the likes of Iron & Wine, Lake Street Dive, Gregory Alan Isakov, and Mandolin Orange. Sway Wild’s infectious sound explores the corners of rock, pop, funk, prog, worldbeat, and folk, but at its nucleus it is undeniably a music full of joy.
