WELCOME

Welcome to Oakham School, and thank you for taking the time to read Joining Oakham School. I hope these pages offer a genuine sense of what makes this a special place for your child to live, learn and grow. Our priority is the care and wellbeing of your child, and from the moment they arrive they will be known, supported and encouraged to become the best version of themselves.

We understand children, and we know that the journey from early adolescence to young adulthood should be joyful, memorable and transformative. As your child moves through the School, we will guide them with warmth and expertise, helping them to discover new interests, uncover hidden talents and grow in confidence. With opportunities for everyone and a tailored experience for each individual, Oakham is a vibrant and inclusive community shaped by strong values and a deep belief in the importance of learning and human relationships.

We look forward to welcoming you.

REASONS TO CHOOSE OAKHAM SCHOOL

Starting Year 7 is an exciting moment, and in the Lower School we work hard to ensure that every child experiences a gentle, confident transition into secondary school life. With a well-established Year 7 and 8 curriculum we bring real depth of expertise and experience to teaching at this level, giving pupils the strongest possible foundations from the very beginning.

Our dedicated Lower School campus provides the warmth, structure and strong sense of community that will help your child feel safe, supported and known as an individual from day one. Your child’s House becomes their pastoral home, where Housemasters, Housemistresses and tutors help them find their feet and offer continuous guidance throughout their time with us.

Our new Year 7 classrooms sit at the heart of the campus, giving pupils a clear sense of identity while keeping them closely connected to the wider School. Specialist teachers bring passion, care and expertise to every lesson, helping your child to develop strong foundations for the years ahead.

Above all, belonging comes first: we will encourage your child to be curious and courageous, to try new things, discover new talents and truly flourish.

As pupils enter Year 9, they step into a new phase of their Oakham journey –one shaped by growing independence, fresh opportunities and a deeper sense of who they are becoming. We understand the complexities of adolescence, and we work closely with families to ensure that every child feels supported, guided and inspired as they navigate these formative years.

From Year 9 onwards, pupils begin to shape their own path: exploring new subjects, discovering passions and preparing for the GCSE choices that will help define their next steps. Our outstanding pastoral care sits alongside a vibrant co-curricular programme, giving pupils the structure and encouragement they need to challenge themselves and broaden their horizons.

By Years 10 and 11, teenagers are ready for greater responsibility, and we provide the expertise and reassurance they need as they embark on their GCSE courses.

UNIQUE HOUSE STRUCTURE

We are incredibly proud of our pastoral care, and much of its strength comes from our supportive House structure and the central role each House plays in your child’s development.

Every pupil, whether day or boarding, belongs to a physical House within its own building. This is your child’s home while they are at school – the place they start and finish each day, spend breaktimes, and feel part of a close-knit community.

Each House is led by a dedicated pastoral team, including a Housemaster/Housemistress, Matron, and Tutors. This means your child always has trusted adults they can turn to for guidance, encouragement or support. No child goes unnoticed.

Houses are warm, social environments where pupils build friendships across year groups through House families, interhouse competitions and shared activities. They also offer welcoming spaces for your child to relax, study and socialise.

DAILY LIFE

Oakham’s carefully structured timetable supports your child – day, weekly boarder, or full boarder – by creating space every day to balance academics, activities, and shared meals of breakfast, lunch, and supper.

DAY PUPILS

Our Day Houses open from 7.30am, giving your child the option to join the boarders for breakfast and, if it suits your family, stay on for supper too. Their day is carefully structured to include inspiring lessons, enriching activities, dedicated homework time, sport, and plenty of opportunities to socialise – all designed to help them thrive while still ensuring you can enjoy relaxed, quality time together at home.

Lower School pupils also benefit from two complimentary boarding nights each term. It’s a fantastic way for them to experience the fun, friendship and structure of boarding life, and many discover they love the extra independence and community it brings.

CENTRAL DINING

Central Dining brings our whole community together. Our Barraclough Dining Hall sits at the heart of the campus, giving pupils and staff a shared space to eat, connect and enjoy freshly prepared meals from our in-house catering team, who provide for a wide range of dietary needs. With everyone coming together for lunch each day, it creates a wonderfully sociable atmosphere where day pupils and boarders mix naturally – and siblings can catch up too –helping to strengthen friendships and build a genuine sense of belonging. To help younger pupils settle in, Year 7 and 8 eat lunch in their own dedicated dining room, giving your child the chance to get used to the wide choice available before joining the main dining hall in Year 9.

BUS ROUTES

Many families of day pupils take advantage of our exceptional private minibus services, which bring Oakhamians to School from all around the local area.

Our driver is wonderful –always on time, greets everyone with a beaming smile and most importantly has a great relationship with the children. Timing of the bus allows children to compete at sports and complete homework in school, then an opportunity to decompress before getting home – much like us commuting to work!”

BOARDING LIFE

WEEKLY BOARDING

Boarding at Oakham School offers a warm, structured and opportunity-rich environment that supports you and your child in equal measure. With busy schedules, academic commitments and co-curricular passions filling each week, many families value the stability and flexibility that boarding provides. We know every family’s needs are different, which is why we offer a range of options.

FULL BOARDING

Our full boarding community is a welcoming and lively home-from-home for around 220 boarders from the UK and overseas. Your child will be surrounded by friends, guided by experienced House staff and immersed in a structured routine that balances work, rest and play. Weekends bring a blend of trips, socials, activities and downtime, giving your child the chance to relax, explore new interests and build strong, lasting friendships that last well beyond their school years.

Weekly boarding is increasingly popular with around 150 pupils choosing to stay up to six nights a week. This option is ideal for your child if they want to enjoy the full breadth of School life during the week while still spending regular time at home. Your child can choose to return mid-week or head home after Saturday sporting commitments, returning to School on a Sunday evening or Monday morning. Weekly boarding removes the daily pressure of travel, creates more time for learning and leisure, and surrounds your child with a supportive community that quickly begins to feel like home.

FLEXI BOARDING IN YEARS 7 AND 8

Flexible boarding in the Lower School enables your child to stay between two and five nights a week, to suit modern family routines. On boarding nights, your child will enjoy all the benefits of boarding life in comfortable and homely surroundings. They can also stay on non-boarding nights for prep, supper and activities until school bedtime and join weekend activities. Caring for your child is our Head of Lower School Boarding, alongside a strong and supportive team of resident staff. Day pupils often extend their day too, joining boarders for meals, prep or clubs, creating a seamless and inclusive community.

MILITARY FAMILIES

We are proud of our longstanding connection with Armed Forces families and offer a Forces Bursary Scheme to support continuity of education. Children from age 11 can join our vibrant boarding community, where experienced staff help them settle quickly, make friends for life and feel at home. We understand that serving personnel may not always be able to visit regularly, so we welcome parents whenever they can come. Several Leave Out Weekends each year allow children to stay in school or visit family and friends. Families in receipt of the Continuity of Education Allowance benefit from significantly reduced fees.

Oakham School has provided everything our son needs to help unlock his potential. The wraparound support provided has ensured sporting and academic achievements can co-exist alongside very strong pastoral care provision.”

INTERNATIONAL PUPILS

International pupils are a vibrant part of our community. With pupils joining us from 35 countries, they bring languages, traditions and perspectives that enrich every aspect of School life. We value the global outlook our international pupils help create, and they, in turn, gain the full experience of a British boarding education: academic stretch, cultural immersion and friendships that span continents.

We know arriving in a new country can feel overwhelming, so we make settling in as smooth as possible. Your child will join a welcoming Boarding House with pupils from the UK and overseas, supported by caring House staff and personal tutors. Weekends are filled with activities, trips and events, offering countless opportunities to make friends, practise English and explore British culture.

YOUR CHILD’S LEARNING

JOURNEY

THE CONNECTED CURRICULUM: BUILDING CONFIDENT, CAPABLE LEARNERS

SUPPORTIVE TUTORS

At Oakham, we want your child’s learning journey to feel rich, balanced and genuinely empowering. Our approach isn’t just about excellent teaching – though we are proud of the expertise and passion our teachers bring every day. It’s about giving your child the confidence, curiosity and independence they need to thrive both now and long after they leave school. Your child will be encouraged to stretch themselves academically, but also to explore new interests, take on challenges, and develop the habits and mindset that lead to long term success.

Our Connected Curriculum brings together academic, pastoral and co-curricular learning and the five core skills we believe every young person needs to thrive. These elements don’t sit in separate boxes; they work together to help your child grow in a way that feels natural, supported and exciting. Pupils don’t just learn facts – they learn how to think critically, manage themselves, collaborate effectively and engage with big ideas. These skills are woven into every subject, forming a strong “trunk” of knowledge and capability that supports success at school, university and in future careers.

Having a dedicated tutor is key to your child’s success at Oakham. In small groups of 8–10, tutors get to know each pupil exceptionally well, meeting them up to three times a week to support organisation, social skills and academic progress. They work closely with Housemasters/ Housemistresses and parents to help your child balance their academic, creative and social life and set personal goals. Because tutors build strong, trusting relationships, they are well placed to guide your child and address any academic or pastoral concerns.

HOMEWORK (PREP)

We want homework (prep) to support your child’s learning – not overwhelm it. Prep is carefully balanced at each stage of the School, with time built into the day so your child can make a start on tasks and ask for help when they need it. This approach helps them grow in independence while still having the space to enjoy the rich co curricular and pastoral life Oakham offers.

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT

Academic enrichment is built into your child’s weekly timetable, beginning with our vibrant lunchtime programme. These sessions allow teachers to step beyond the syllabus and explore the most exciting, thought provoking aspects of their subjects – sparking curiosity, encouraging big questions and helping your child see connections across disciplines. As your child moves up through the School, this enrichment broadens further, with afternoon academic activities and evening events such as the Torch Lecture series offering even more opportunities to deepen interests and discover new passions in the Sixth Form.

Oakham is doing an outstanding job in supporting and developing our boys as they progress through the school.”
Parent of Day Pupils in Years 7 and 10

PASTORAL LEARNING

Pastoral Learning at Oakham is woven into every part of your child’s development. Through weekly pastoral lessons, your child explores wellbeing, personal growth and essential life skills, helping them build confidence and emotional resilience. We encourage pupils to reflect on their progress, set goals and understand how they learn best. Our assessment and reporting systems support this reflective approach, ensuring your child feels guided and empowered.

CAREERS EDUCATION

Your child begins their careers journey through a programme built into the Pastoral Curriculum by our award-winning Careers Department. In these early years, careers education is about exploration – helping your child understand their strengths, interests and emerging skills. They start linking subjects to real world pathways, reflecting on co curricular experiences and recording achievements using Unifrog. In Year 9, the Morrisby profile supports confident GCSE choices. In Years 10 and 11, they learn to write effective CVs and cover letters and receive one to one guidance informed by a full Morrisby psychometric report. These strong foundations grow into bespoke guidance and specialist support as your child moves toward the Sixth Form and beyond.

ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE

If your child speaks English as an additional language, they’ll find plenty of tailored support at Oakham. Our dedicated specialist English as an Additional Language (EAL) teachers will get to know your child through the application process, and then provide support that reflects your child’s individual needs. This includes small group lessons, one to one support and in class guidance to help them thrive academically and socially. For those needing more focused development, our Intensive EAL Programme strengthens language skills through personalised teaching, reading support, and bespoke science lessons while ensuring your child is fully involved in House life and co-curricular activities.

LEARNING SUPPORT

If your child has additional learning needs, they’ll be in expert hands at Oakham. Our experienced Learning Support teachers work with pupils from Year 7 to Year 13, helping them develop the skills and confidence to thrive. Our purpose-built department provides a calm and wellresourced space for small group lessons and individual and paired lessons for pupils with identified specific learning difficulties. We have two teachers offering in-class support for Year 7 and 8 pupils with additional needs, creating a positive learning environment for all pupils to start their journey with confidence. From Year 9 onwards, pupils may receive support through individual lessons.

DEVELOPING POTENTIAL THROUGH SCHOLARSHIPS

We offer a wide range of scholarships to recognise and nurture exceptional ability and potential. Whether your child is academically ambitious, creatively driven or athletically gifted, they will be supported to thrive. Because pupils grow and excel at different times, we offer scholarships – and a sporting talent award – across several year groups. We welcome applications in Year 7 or Year 9, with an additional opportunity for new joiners in Year 10.

For information on how to apply and the life of a scholar, see page 30.

OPPORTUNITIES BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Oakham’s exceptional co-curricular life gives your child the freedom to explore, create and grow. With opportunities spanning sport, music, drama, activities, outdoor learning and community service, they’ll discover new passions, build confidence and form friendships that last. These experiences sit at the heart of an Oakham education, shaping character, curiosity and a strong sense of belonging.

MUSIC

Music is open to every child, from beginners to advanced performers. With individual and group lessons, ensembles, masterclasses and tours, your child will be encouraged to explore their creativity and grow in confidence. Performances throughout the year help them find their musical voice and celebrate their progress.

SPORT AND FITNESS

Sport at Oakham is inclusive, ambitious and full of opportunity. Whether your child is an emerging athlete or simply enjoys being active, they’ll find teams, coaching and activities that help them thrive. From early confidencebuilding training sessions and fixtures to expanding Middle School choices and expert coaching throughout, sport becomes a source of joy, resilience and lifelong wellbeing.

DRAMA AND DANCE

Drama and Dance offer your child the chance to perform, collaborate and express themselves. Productions, workshops, LAMDA lessons and specialist teaching help pupils develop skills both on stage and behind the scenes. From early showcases to major whole school performances, creativity flourishes at every level.

ACTIVITIES

With over 125 activities, your child can try everything from cookery and coding to sailing and STEM engineering. These sessions build independence, leadership and problem-solving skills, while giving pupils the freedom to pursue passions or discover new ones.

ADVENTUROUS LEARNING

Outdoor challenges help your child build resilience and teamwork, with experiences that grow as they do. From adventure camps in Years 7 and 8, where they take on challenges such as climbing, coasteering and caving, through to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and CCF in later years, pupils learn to push boundaries and develop life skills that stay with them long after school.

TRIPS AND TOURS

Trips and tours broaden your child’s horizons through cultural visits, fieldwork, sports tours, music trips and international adventures. These experiences deepen learning and nurture independence, helping your child to become a well-rounded individual ready to thrive in a global world.

CHARITY AND COMMUNITY

Service is woven into School life. Through volunteering and House fundraising, your child learns to lead, collaborate and make a positive difference.

YEARS 7 AND 8: A FLYING START

When your child joins us in Year 7 and 8, our aim is simple: to help them grow in confidence, curiosity and independence as they take their first steps into secondary school life. We want them to feel excited about what lies ahead. These are the years where they can explore a broad and balanced curriculum, enjoy access to specialist teachers and facilities, and feel encouraged to give everything a go.

AN INSPIRING LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

In Year 7, your child is taught English, Maths, History, Geography, Religion and Philosophy, Latin and French in a dedicated suite of classrooms at the heart of the campus. This area includes a bright, welcoming break-out space where pupils can work together, share ideas and build friendships.

As well as this academic base, your child enjoys easy access to the School’s specialist facilities in Science, Drama, Music, Art, Design Technology and Sport. This balance of familiarity and exploration helps them settle quickly while still feeling part of the wider school community.

By Year 8, your child will feel confident navigating the whole campus, with lessons taking place across all departments as they prepare for the next stage of their Oakham journey.

LEARNING THAT CONNECTS AND BROADENS PERSPECTIVES

Our Year 7 and 8 curriculum is designed to help your child make meaningful connections across subjects and understand how ideas link together.

The Creative and Performing Arts carousel gives your child the chance to explore a wide range of materials and techniques, from screen printing and sculpture to textiles, photography and drawing in Art. In Design Technology, they learn practical skills such as soldering and simple electronics, building confidence as they create and problem solve. Drama and Dance lessons develop performance and teamwork, culminating in a showcase in our professional theatre. Music is equally vibrant, with opportunities to try steel pans and take part in free group instrumental lessons, helping your child discover new interests without pressure.

Dedicated reading lessons in English, held in our university quality library, help your child develop strong literacy skills and a lifelong love of books.

Languages open up new possibilities too. Through our language taster programme, your child will experience French, German and Spanish before choosing a pathway that suits their interests. Lunchtime enrichment sessions offer even more opportunities to go beyond the curriculum and explore academic subjects in fresh and exciting ways. Trips, such as to Leicester’s Jewry Wall Museum and Leicester Synagogue, bring learning to life by linking subjects like Latin and Religion and Philosophy in memorable, real world contexts.

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AND PREFECT ROLES

Your child will build confidence, character and communication skills through a range of leadership opportunities. These might include reading in Chapel, guiding visitors on school tours, or taking on one of the much valued Year 8 prefect roles. Each experience helps them develop a sense of responsibility and pride in their School and helps them make the transition to Year 9 and beyond.

YEAR 9: DISCOVERY, GROWTH AND NEW HORIZONS

The journey from Year 8 to Year 9 is a significant moment, and we evolve the way we support your child as they move into adolescence. They begin to enjoy greater independence, more choice, and a curriculum designed to help them understand themselves as learners.

A CURRICULUM FOR DISCOVERY

At Oakham, Year 9 is a foundational year where your child can risk being good at something. They’ll explore a wide-ranging curriculum, try everything, and discover what suits them before choosing from 26 GCSEs. With tailored pathways through setting and streaming, they begin shaping a future that fits their strengths and ambitions. Prep time, enrichment and reading are built into the week, giving them space to breathe. For example, a typical Tuesday might include two lessons, sport, enrichment and then two more lessons – a rhythm that keeps learning varied and energising.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND ENRICHMENT

Small class sizes, academic tutors and supported study sessions ensure your child receives the individual attention they need. Regular tutor meetings and enrichment activities stretch their thinking and deepen subject connections.

LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Special off-timetable events enrich Year 9, including the Battlefields trip, where the whole year group travels to northern France to deepen their understanding of this significant period of history. The trip draws together key themes from work in History and English lessons and provides future inspiration for work in other subjects. The Individual Project allows pupils the chance to research and explore a subject of their own choice, and an overnight camp as part of the Bronze DofE Expedition develops planning and resilience skills.

YEARS 10 AND 11: CHOOSING YOUR GCSE PATHWAY

SUBJECT OPTIONS

All pupils study the core subjects. They then choose from a wide range of optional subjects to create a programme that excites and challenges them.

Core Subjects

• English Language

• English Literature

• Mathematics

• Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics)

As your child moves from Year 9 into the GCSE years, they begin an exciting stage of their academic journey. The GCSE years at Oakham are deliberately designed to be broad, ambitious and full of possibility. It’s a time to think carefully about what they enjoy, what motivates them, and where their strengths lie. We guide your child every step of the way – starting with Science, which helps unlock the combinations available – so they’re never left to guess or make decisions alone. Our advice is simple: give things a go, talk to teachers, explore every option, and choose subjects because they genuinely spark interest, not because friends are choosing them.

TAILORED GCSE PATHWAYS

Every child learns differently, so we tailor the number of GCSEs they take to suit their needs and ambitions. Most pupils study 9 or 10 GCSEs, while those with significant sporting or musical commitments may take 8. Some highly academic pupils may choose to stretch themselves further. In theory, it’s even possible to take 13 GCSEs, including three in Mathematics – though we only recommend this when it’s genuinely right for the individual.

Our flexible pathways ensure your child keeps doors open for Sixth Form and beyond. Whether they choose 8, 9, 10 or 11 GCSEs, we help them build a programme that fits their interests, strengths and future aspirations.

HOW TO APPLY

Oakham School is an ambitious, vibrant community shaped by a six-day-a week rhythm. To ensure the best fit for your child, all applicants complete entrance assessments, including age-appropriate academic tests and an interview – informal for younger pupils and more structured for older ones. We offer tailored support for children with SEND so they can demonstrate their full potential. We also request a confidential reference from your child’s current school to help us understand their day-to-day capabilities.

11+ ENTRY

Children are invited to sit entrance assessments and have an interview in the January prior to joining in September. We warmly welcome applications later in the year, if spaces are available.

13+ PRE-TEST ENTRY

Children who currently attend a Prep School are encouraged to make their application during the autumn term of Year 7, in anticipation of joining Oakham School in Year 9, 22 months later. Applicants will sit our pre-test assessment and have an interview during the first or second term of Year 7 (arranged in conjunction with the Prep School).

Offers made after the pre-test are conditional on your child’s performance in the Common Entrance Exam at the end of Year 8 (an average 55% pass mark). If your child’s Prep School does not do the Common Entrance exam, he/she will need to achieve a similar performance in the Oakham entrance assessments in the January of Year 8.

13+ ENTRY

Children not currently in a Prep School, typically make their application during the autumn term of Year 8, in anticipation of joining Oakham School 10 months later. They are invited to sit entrance assessments and have an interview. Assessments take place at Oakham School each year in the January prior to joining in September. We welcome applications later in the year if spaces are available. Offers made after the entrance assessments are unconditional.

14+ ENTRY

Children applying for 14+ entry are invited to sit entrance assessments and have an interview in the January prior to joining in September. We warmly welcome applications later in the year, if spaces are available.

ONE-YEAR STAYS

We welcome applications from international boarders wishing to join us for a one-year stay, if spaces are available. Our caring Boarding Houses help your child settle quickly, while full boarding enables them to improve their English, build confidence, and experience the British education system. We can also create a bespoke timetable to suit their needs.

JOINING MID-YEAR

We understand that families sometimes need a child to join us mid year, and we will always endeavour to accept applications where places are available. Our caring Houses help your child settle quickly, and our flexible approach enables us to design a bespoke timetable that keeps their learning on track, encourages strong progress, and nurtures their confidence.
