D A Y L I L I E S

LADY LUCILLE

2004 All American Daylily Selection

Welcome to Oakes Daylilies!

Why wait? With our extra-large plants you’ll get more flowers more quickly!

Our family-owned, family-run business has been growing daylilies for three generations. My grandfather, Bill Oakes, began selling plants out of his home garden over 40 years ago. Today, my father and I grow more than 40 acres of daylilies and ship our plants to gardeners nationwide. Daylilies are our passion as well as our business! Over the years we have grown more than 4000 different varieties, and from this wealth of choices we select for you only the very strongest performers. These are varieties that we know will impress you with their vigorous growth and abundant blooms.

Intense deep orange blooms shine in the garden. Excellent dark green foliage. Awesome in a mass display! 24" tall, 6" bloom. Mid. Dormant. Tetraploid. #2606 Lady Lucille Daylily $14.99 each or 3 for $39.99

We take great pride in the quality and size of our plants. Oakes Daylilies are more than twice the size of others, with a minimum of 3 fans per clump. These jumbo plants will quickly settle into your garden and give you a beautiful display of flowers the very first year from an early spring planting. All of our daylilies are grown on our family farm in East Tennessee. We dig to order, and your farm-fresh plants will typically be out of the ground less than 24 hours before they are in a box and headed your way. We dig and ship daylilies 9 months of the year, so we are always ready to serve you. We look forward to sharing our daylilies with you. Order with confidence – we guarantee you will love them!

SELECTING YOUR DAYLILIES It’s pretty simple, most of you can grow any of the daylilies we sell. The only exception - If you live in an area that doesn’t get freezing weather in the winter, you need to choose Evergreen or Semi-Evergreen varieties (not Dormant). Foliage Type: For most gardeners, foliage type doesn’t matter. In areas that don’t get freezing weather, evergreens or semi-evergreens may maintain foliage year-round. In colder zones, foliage will typically be frozen to the ground regardless of type. Bloom Season: Here in Tennessee, the earliest daylilies begin blooming in late May. Mid season is mid June, and the latest begin blooming in early July. Daylilies will bloom earlier south of us, and later to our north. Rebloom: Varieties listed as rebloomers may have more than one set of bloom scapes, either one right after another, or with a break in-between. Tetraploid: Tetraploid daylilies have twice the number of chromosomes. It doesn’t really make any difference, unless you’re planning on hybridizing (crossing to make seeds).

GROWING GREAT DAYLILIES

Daylilies are very easy-to-grow plants. Complete planting and cultural information is included with each order, also available online (www.oakesdaylilies.com) Plant in a sunny spot, full sun if possible. They’re not too picky about soil, but will appreciate a well-drained location. They like a lot of water during the growing season. Plenty of water is key to getting the prettiest blooms. Spring or Fall are both great times to plant. - In Spring, plant after danger of hard freeze has passed. - In Fall, finish planting several weeks before freezing weather. - You can plant through the summer in most areas if you water after planting. Space your daylilies 18-24” apart.
