PRESIDENT’S CORNER Join Key Club!

It’s the start of the school year, and the perfect time to try something new! Please check out the Key Club booth during club rush. Our club has a lot to offer: we provide opportunities to volunteer year-round, if you reach 100 hours through Key Club you will get to wear a stole at graduation, and there are many opportunities to socialize with people from other schools in our division.

Joining Key Club is simple! Make sure to fill out the parental consent, photo consent, and medical authorization forms.

Staple all of these forms to your receipt you will receive from Alcala after paying the $12 membership fee and turn it in to room 102. It is extremely important to pay the membership fee. The money covers any insurance for volunteer events and some of the money also goes back to the Pediatric Trauma Program.

One of our biggest events of the year is coming up!

Fall Rally 2019 may seem far away, but the fees are due soon! It will be $71 for members to attend. This event is a great way for you to meet people from all around the district. We raise money for the Pediatric Trauma Program and show our division spirit by wearing yellow from head to toe and cheering our hearts out. This event is held at Six Flags Magic Mountain and will be on November 9th. Come out to our informational meeting on September 16 in room 102. Hope to see you around suns!

EDITOR’S NOTE August…

Hello, and welcome back to yet another issue of the Sunshine Times!

First and foremost, I’d like to apologize for the delay of this September issue. With school back in session, I’ve found it hard to balance between my academics and extracurriculars. Making these newsletters is time consuming enough, and with my regular homework to take care of as well, enough time seems to be nothing less than a rarity. Nonetheless, here we are: the September issue. I could never let you guys down!

Because this issue comes a week later in the month than its usual release date, as you read please keep in mind that these articles are based on the month of August! If you haven’t caught on yet, my newsletters for each month feature our officers’ articles from the previous month! Next month, for example, will feature articles from this month — September. I know, I know, it’s confusing, but that’s just the way it has always worked! It gives officers more time to reflect on the previous month and write their articles while giving you a little sneak peek into previous OAKC shenanigans.

AUGUST 2019 Jennifer Vo | 11 | Vice President “August is my favorite month,” said nobody ever. Even as much as I strive to be the most positive, caring, and inclusive as I can be everyday, the month of August deserves no rights. School started, it’s hot all the time, and my seasonal allergies have been activated so I can’t breathe through my nose. I would rather suffocate than resort to mouth breathing. Disgusting!

Even after summer ended, I was still able to chair an event on Saturday, August 10th. That event was actually the last Concert on the Green for 2019 (don’t worry!

COTG will be back in the summer of 2020). Huge thanks to the volunteers that came out for the four-and-a-half-hour event! I also chaired the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast event on August 24th, which gave the volunteers free breakfast if they so desired. Overall, each event ran successfully, as in both cases, the volunteers just served food and drinks to customers, and refilled certain items accordingly.

A new school year brings about a phenomenon known as Club Rush. Oxford has a bit of a late start, as I’ve already seen

see all my friends and the OAKC officers at school again! I’m also super excited for Club Rush next month because we can start meeting freshmen and the future leaders of our club :,))) Although it’s a little more stressful now, I know that there is so much in store for OAKC in the upcoming months now that August is over!

To be frank, I’m quite nervous of this year’s club rush, as this year is my very first year of being part of a club’s board. I especially was avoidant of clubs and club rush in 8th grade, as I saw clubs to be more of a high school exclusive thing (then again, most of the juniorhigh friendly clubs didn’t appeal to me).

However, after joining Key Club and other clubs at school, I realize too late that I should’ve been more involved with extracurricular activities.

Now that I am part of such an important club, I make sure to put my best effort in serving the club, like chairing events when I can and posting digital ads in order to spread about information. As a last reminder, please make sure to sign up for clubs that you may be interested in, as it doesn’t hurt to dedicate your time to do something fun!

EACH ONE TEACH ONE Tiffany Ong | 10 | Historian

The Each One Teach One event had a very successful turnout, and volunteers were able to make a great impact on the lives of low-income families. Before the distribution of the items, volunteers put together bags of food, clothes, supplies, and much more.

Key Clubbers helped with putting canned food into bags for each person in a very efficient manner.

After we finished assembling the bags, people started to come in to collect their food and supplies. Volunteers were able to assist the families with carrying all of their items, since they were all very heavy and it was a lot to carry. Some volunteers also put the bags of food into the families’ carts and bags, based on how many people were in the family

It was very heartwarming to help people in need, and to see so many people put so much effort into helping other families who could not afford basic life necessities. People were working hard and trying their hardest to benefit the lives of others. I loved the event because we were not only giving them food, clothes, supplies, etc., but we were also providing them with happiness so they could live their lives with more comfort and ease.

LOVE ANAHEIM August 31, 2019

Claire Lee | 10 | Publicist On August 31, 2019, Key Club was invited to an event called Love Anaheim. The con was that I had to wake up at 5:30 in the morning. The pros were everything else that took place during the event.

When we got to Magnolia Baptist Church, we were assigned to work in the kitchen, which I was really excited about since I personally enjoy cooking and preparing meals. Our leader’s name was Lisa, who was really chill with everything.

She assigned me, Tobi, and Christina to cut 100 oranges (yeah, fun, I know :/) but thankfully the time passed really quickly and through teamwork, we were able to finish within 20 minutes. Now, no one is actually interested in what I did there since this isn’t another MRF,, so I’ll get to the highlights of this event.

One of the volunteer leaders had two kids: a seven year old named Ellie and a three year old named Trevor. When they first ignored our “hi”s and “how are you’s, I just laughed it off because they were cute, but boy they were a handful.

Something about me, bothered them I guess, since throughout the whole break, all they did was hit, tackle, karate-shop, and chase me around. It was Ellie’s birthday, so we sang her the Birthday Song. She asked us to sit with her for breakfast, which we gladly agreed to. I don't know how it transitioned to her karate-chopping me, but it did, and I spent 10 minutes minimum running away from her and trying to defend myself. Trevor then came by and started copying his sister and chased me around, and I lost all of my energy.

I was able to bond with the little pranksters, even if it was through me suffering and getting beaten up by kids that were 10 years younger than me. I learned once again how much I love spending time with children and thinkinghighli back at it, it was truly the highlight of my event. Before I left the event, Ellie and Trevor gave me a huge hug, which made my whole year :) I love kids and I love Key Club.

Most events that we volunteer at we help people check into the event, monitor a station, or complete a service project.

However, during Love Anaheim we made food for all of the volunteers which was a different and fun experience. We were some of the first volunteers to arrive and we prepared breakfast for all the volunteers as they arrived. As we were eating, we befriended a little girl named Ellie, who came to volunteer on her birthday and her younger brother Trevor. Ellie was super outgoing and asked us to eat with her and play with her after. As we were leaving she asked us to eat with

her and play with her after. As we were leaving she even gave all of us hugs.

After preparing breakfast, we helped out in the kitchen. I learned a lot about the event; this is their sixth year holding the event, and volunteers come and hold various service events. One of the ladies that I was working in the kitchen with said she came because her friend’s son wanted to participate in this service event for his birthday; I found it really cool that he was using his birthday party as an opportunity to encourage others to volunteer.

Overall, it was a very fun experience and I hope Oxford has this as a service event next year!

BAKING UP TROUBLE Lydia Lee | 10 | Historian

Police encounters. Threats of removal from family. 8 dozen brownies. Panda Express. All within one bake sale that lasted from 8 whole hours.

I decided to go to the bake sale because the last slot was empty, despite it being one day before the actual bake sale. I also was too lazy to bake, which would’ve only taken one hour, and instead decided to go volunteer for 8 hours.

At the bake sale, we received many baked goods, including various sizes of chocolate chip cookies (burnt and gluten-free!), as well as unbreakable sugar cookies, Pandan waffles and cinnamon rolls. Of course, there were also attempted cake pops, cute cupcakes, and huge brownies. Due to all of these wonderful donations, we were able to make lots of money.

Now, at the actual bake sale, we were waiting around for more customers with a sugar tooth. One of our customers was a middle-aged male who loved the brownies. He attracted a homeless male who had a glass bottle with him. They argued verbally and sent various threats to each other. This attracted the attention of several store workers who in turn, called the police. Many minutes later, the police arrived and began investigating the area and questioning people in their cars.

The customer apologized to us various times and then left soon after. In fear of another fight, the store workers started coming outside and took turns standing guard. It made us feel very safe and very scared of police questioning us.

However, at the end of the day, it was a scary yet interesting experience, showing how Key Club truly expands one’s perspective of the world. From being a baker, to advertising to customers, to experiencing a verbal fight, KC has widened my views just from 1 event.

This was the second bake sale that I decided to stay at and help Grace out with. But then, another man walks up to our stand. He suddenly began criticizing us for making sale and he kept adding the insults towards the African American. He even began speaking in S threatening. Our Key Club like so many others across CNH hosts bake sales to fundraise for PTP. The Pediatric Trauma Program was created by the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation to combat the problem of adolescent trauma and injury.

I decided to volunteer at our Bake Sale in-front of Fullerton’s Albertsons. Our board and members baked an assortment of goods including brownies, cookies, cinnamon rolls, and pandan waffles. I noticed that many people decided to donate money directly to us instead of purchasing our goods. Whether that was a testament to their morality or a testament to the baking skills of our members will remain a mystery.

A lovely man was giving us money for some cookies. Suddenly, behind me I hear a man hurl profanities at the man with the prominent use of the N-word and other derogatory racial epithets. I look back and see someone in his late 20s or early 30s with messy black hair, dirty clothes, and a beer bottle in a bag. The man responds by telling him to treat people respectively. Of course, it escalates. He announces that he has a gun, and the racist man screams back that he has a bottle.

After the man who had given us money left, the racist begins talking to us. He tells us that if we ever give bake goods to another black again, we would not be apart of his, “family�.

He rants at us in Spanish, with the only words we can collectively understand being never and heart. After the racist leaves, passerby begin talking to us. A woman gets the manager to call the police. Another man tells us that he would have come out of the store to defend us had the situation gotten worse.

This situation further highlights the importance of PTP. A childhood stress not talked about nearly enough is racial stress. It has been linked to infant mortality, maternal mortality, and a reduction in academic success. Of course, Xenophobia and racism is not mutually exclusive to black children. Pediatricians and other pediatric providers role in helping children cope with the stresses of racism is incredibly important. By fundraising for PTP we can help fund quality training for doctors and nurses to combat racial trauma. Even 1 traumatic racial experience can adversely affect a child for life. By simply baking a baked good, or even straight up donating cash to Oxford Key Club, you will be positively impacting the lives of children through supporting the efforts of PTP.

BEAUTY & THE BEAST BEAUTY & THE BEAST BEAUTY & THE BEAST BEAUTY & THE BEAST BEAUTY & THE BEAST Victoria Truong | 10 | Tech Chair Oh boy, the last weeks of summer flew by too quickly and school is back and kicking, but that isn’t going to stop us as Key-clubbers from volunteering! Although I do admit I haven’t been attending as many as I did over the summer because of school activities, I was still able to end summer vacation with a bang and racked up quite a few hours at the Pearson Park Live Show: Beauty and the Beast.

This was the last division event of the summer and we worked in collaboration with the Assistance League of Cultural Arts, which were basically the people who organized the stations of the 5-day long live show. As the name of the event suggests, it took place at Pearson Park Amphitheatre in Anaheim. The shifts were from 4-10PM, Tuesday-Friday, so if you volunteered here all five days you could’ve earned 30 hours of service in less than a week! Various stations and jobs including the will call/box office and ticket takers, assistant house managers, booth support, safety manager, program managers, ushers, and the food booth were filled with our fellow Key- Clubbers from different schools in D30S. We were working mostly before the show started at 7 o’clock, and after that most of us didn’t have much to do so we seized our chance to watch part of the show ourselves! It was an entertaining performance that was a nice way to end the night and I was glad that I could watch it more than once to catch new details that I missed every night.

Other than the show itself, there were also arts and crafts activities that families could participate in outside in the venue area. Food was sold by division that included popcorn and candy, which actually had a good sale towards the end of the event and all of our raised money went to PTP (Pediatric Trauma Program, which you should also donate to!).

The only thing that concerned me about working at the food booth was the source of heat for cooking our popcorn, which was a microwave provided by a DLT member. It was working well until the third or fourth day of the event when the door suddenly wouldn’t open no matter how hard we pushed the button! Tragic, I know, and unfortunately we weren’t able to make popcorn for the rest of the time; however, we still managed to sell the candy and make a profit.

The first few hours of the shifts each day were humid and hot, and I might’ve even gotten a few mosquito bites here and there, but who wouldn’t get those in the outdoors during the summer? The admission lines started getting long and populating about an hour before the show, which was when the food booth started running the popcorn back and forth from the microwave to the table. The weather cooled down gradually to a peaceful night in the venue if you excluded the audible singing and enthusiastic music floating out from the live show. Things were calm and we had hour-long breaks between the intermissions that would fill the entrance area again with attendees hungry for some good food to snack on before the show resumed.

Each day flew by faster than the next once I got into the rhythm until eventually, it was my last day working there on a Friday, so I made sure to enjoy it as much as possible.

That night I was able to watch the show earlier and before I left, I also got my hands on some exclusive Beauty and the Beast vinyl figures that all the volunteers fawned over as well. Satisfied with my brand new keepsakes of this memorable event, I could absolutely agree that this was a fun event that had its ups and downs, but the outcome was worth it and I got to see smiles everywhere. I would definitely work an event like this over the summer again and I hope the next live show will be even better!

OXFORD SERVICE PROJECT August 24, 2019

Giang Nguyen | 11 | Historian Oftentimes, community service can be fun and enjoyable. But sometimes, it can also be a lot of toil and hard work. It’s not uncommon for me to come home exhausted after some long hours of volunteering, having spent all my energy lifting heavy boxes or standing around in the sun and whatnot. Even when there is a lot of downtime, it can be a bit boring to just sit around while waiting for something to do.

This month, our Key Club decided to host a small service project at a park where students from Oxford Academy could come to make dog toys out of donated shirts and jeans. It was held on a Saturday, which I normally deem as the most “chill” day of the week. The park location was also about a half mile or so from my house, meaning I could just walk there instead of worrying about a ride. Only about a dozen students signed up, and most of them were my close friends as well. With all these elements combined, it came out to be a very fun yet relaxing service project.

We spent nearly three hours sitting together as a group and making dog toys. Some of us were cutting up shirts while others were braiding them together. It was a simple task, but it was also a great social experience as we struck up conversations and jammed out to music as well. We also took a small break during the service project to get up and stretch while playing some icebreaker games, despite the ice having already been broken. It was a blast to hang out with friends while also doing some simple service on a chill Saturday to de-stress from the grueling school week. I really hope that our Key Club can put together another small service project like this in the future.

Helen Tran | 11 | Project Chair The OA Service Project took place on Saturday, August 24th. The overall goal of this event was to make dog toys and to bond with other members of Key Club. This service project was very lowkey and chill. I had so much fun at this event and time really flew by!

Thanks to the 1275427825 shirts that Tobi brought, we kept ourselves busy cutting strips and learning how to braid. Not only were we able to make dog toys, but we also challenged ourselves to make cute, trendy clothes from the old t-shirts. #thriftflipchallenge At one point, we had live entertainment from Pauline and Vikram fighting, which had me dying from laughter. Spoiler alert: Pauline won.

Halfway through the service event, we played a few different icebreakers, which brought a lot of excitement and laughter to the members. In my personal experience, icebreakers that I’ve played outside of Key Club can sometimes be repetitive and don’t really do much bonding-wise. However, the icebreakers that we played (shoutout to Jeenie) genuinely allowed us to get closer to one another.

Mostly juniors attended this event, but I hope that in the future we will have greater variety from different grades. I would love to get to know more underclassmen through these types of laidback service events that give us the opportunity to talk and bond.

Natalie Melendez | 12 | Bulletin Editor This month, Oxford Academy Key Club organized its very own service project. The event took place at Modjeska Park on August 24th. And during our time there, we made dog toys from old shirts.

Overall, I really enjoyed this event. Sitting under a tree at the park and cutting up old shirts was somehow just what I needed to distract my mind from the stresses of senior year; it was peaceful and soothing all at once. We also played a few games and listened to music, but to be honest, I spent most of my time simply admiring the scenery around me, breathing in the fresh air and hoping the soccer players next to us didn’t accidentally hit me with the ball (thankfully they didn’t haha).

The 3 hours spent there seemed to almost fly by. And by the end of them, we had filled up around 3 cardboard boxes with newly made dog toys. I’m hoping we get to do more service projects like these as a club soon, and I hope more people have the chance to join us next time! It’d definitely make the event more special :)
