President's Corner!

Greetings, wonderful Key Clubbers!

How is everyone doing so far in their summer? I hope you've been productive because school starts in less than a month! OH YEAH! August is the time for you to frantically start running to buy new clothes (even though we have a uniform), new school supplies, and a new backpack. Before you do all that, however, we have a lot of fun and exciting events for you guys!

Remember that bucket list from last month? Here it is again if you forgot: - Volunteer at one Concert on the Green with our sponsoring Kiwanis Club of Cypress - Be at a beach bonfire with your friends - Start and finish a season of a TV show - Do something active like running or swimming - Meet someone new Have you been keeping up?

Remember: You may delay, but time will not.

Hey Patriots!

I’m back again for this month’s newsletter! ^_^ So we are now back in school and let’s just say that it hasn’t been the best time for me. It’s been really hard to adjust to making all of these wonderful newsletters and also keep up my grades but Don’t give up! We can do this together as a team!

In this past month, we had many events such as Beach Boomba and other fantastic service events such as write away academy and concert on the green! Be sure to contact me or any of the board members if your are interested in appearing in the newsletter! Don’t be shy because I’m very friendly and I won’t bite (unless you are food u_u) HEHE <3 Until Next time Suns! Be sure to do your summer hw tho LOL. Don’t wanna procrastinate on the death work of yourself!

Concert on the Green THE FIRST TIME This Concert on the Green was my first one ever. I had constantly visited the Cypress Library area during the summer to play tennis, but I never knew what was being set up. I was always curious to find out, and when I found out that it was a concert/volunteer opportunity for Key Club, I decided to do it.

At Concert on the Green, volunteers help the Kiwanis booth serve food and socialize within the Cypress community. It was a really rewarding experience to be able to talk to some of the people that are older and have more experience living in this community. Volunteers also got to listen to a few hours of older music, some of which I had never even heard of before.

Although I only got to volunteer at Concert on the Green once this summer, I plan on volunteering for this event more next summer because I like the idea of a little community coming together for something we can all relate to: music.

What to Expect?

It’s almost that time of year where new members join Key Club. Where eager freshman want to finish their 100 hours in that one year. Even though they might be excited about their first event they might be little nervous. So here are my tips to all.

1.What to expect?

Many new members don’t really know what to expect their first event. Just keep an open mind about different tasks you might do it all can differ from picking up trash to even pouring water into paper cups. Just smile and keep a positive attitude.

2. What do I bring?

The hated question on what you should bring.

Honestly when volunteering you should try to stay light, unless you know the event and know you will need something like a backpack but usually keep it simple.

Bring your phone for pictures, carry a couple of bills incase you may get hungry and food, sadly isn’t provided. Always look out for emails or post about the event you are volunteering at incase you need something like and I.D card.

3.Will I be with my

Friends?

Having to part from a love one is tough but having to part from a love one for a couple of hours can be even tougher. Just keep in mind that sometimes you might get separated and it’s not a big deal you will meet amazing new people. Sometime the people in charge of the event need a limit on volunteers doing a job and you might get separated for a short period of time but its all good because fellow Key Clubbers will be there with you.

4. Where do I go when I get there?

Its always tough to find people in crowded events but it’s all okay. First try to remember who was chairing the even, someone on board and try to look for them. They sometimes wear bright yellow t-shirts. If that doesn't work out its still okay look around and ask people who is in charge of volunteers eventually you will find the volunteer coordinator and she/he will direct you. She/he might lead you straight to your friends or the board member you couldn’t find.

and you will gain a lot of the many events you go to.

First you will meet a lot of different people some that go to your school others that don’t and sometimes even get to meet some pretty cool adults. Look at that a freshman and already networking. You will also gain experience in many things such as working with kids, learning about the community and countless of other things. In the end your experience will be great and even if your first event doesn't turn out fantastic it just keeps getting better and better.

In the end what’s most important is what you gain,

Disneyland Half Marathon “KEEP GOING! I BELIEVE IN YOU! PUSH THROUGH! GOOD JOB!...Water???”

You would think that any human being who willingly volunteers from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. would be crazy, right? Wait, I’m sorry. That’s wrong –they’re insane. And yet with hardly any sleep and rest, D30S Key Club members struggled out of their beds, weary and maybe even crossed and drove to Disneyland for the Half Marathon.

Crabby, they grabbed water and snacks and changed to the bright yellow volunteer shirt which magically shifted their mood from tiredness to excitement. I, on the other hand, remained somewhat skeptical and started to question whether messing up my already-screwed-up sleeping schedule further would be worth it. For the entire bus ride to the water station, I started to feel excited. It was amusing to be surrounded by sunny faces, and I realized that Key Club members are the only people in the world who would be overjoyed early this morning.

The moment they dropped us off on Harbor Blvd. and Ball Rd., however, my excitement, how little it was, dropped exceedingly. Here I was standing at a shady location hungry, baggy-eyed, and suffocated at 4 in the morning with 70 people each with a smile from ear to ear. I did not know what was going on, and I started to feel annoyed. I put a smile on my face and tried to make the most of the next 4 hours that I had left there. Volunteers set up tables and poured water in cups for the runners to drink when they passed by. Conversing with other Key Club members around me, my excitement came back.

The moment I saw the first runner panting and letting gravity take him down the bridge, I was overwhelmed with joy. With a cup of water in my hand, I extended my arm, desperately wanting them to take it. Then a mass of other runners -Snow Whites, Minnie Mouses, Captain Americas, Mike Wazowskis- came rolling down the road sweating and striving towards the finish line. It was then that I took off that fake smile and replaced it with one of pride and happiness. “GO GO GO! YOU GOT THIS!” was one of the multiple phrases that came out of my mouth that morning. I screamed. I cheered. I let myself go. I didn’t know that I had so much energy within me to express so much to those runners.

As a volunteer, you always receive gratitude from those you help. Although it isn’t always said, it’s implied. But when those runners came to me and spoke those two little, impactful words, physically using the small amount of air that they could have saved to push themselves through the finish line, was overwhelming and life-changing. I realized that the race wasn’t about me. It wasn’t about how I felt or the fact that I was exhausted or annoyed; it was about them. They all reacted in different ways. One participant in particular ran towards me telling me that he’s taking my water because I had the most energy. Another told me that I was awesome and I told them right back that they were more awesome. Another simply smiled. And it was great.

When I said “Keep going!” and “Good job!” and “You got this!” I meant every single word. I felt myself believing in them and running with them and pushing them forward, and I don’t know where it came from nor am I wondering how so much energy could possibly exist in myself. Altogether, I’m just glad that it does exist. That past my skeptic barrier, there is something real and true when it comes to serving others.

Out of all the late nights I’ve ever pulled, I never expected to wake up at 2am to go to an event, much less pull an all nighter. But volunteering at the Disney Half Marathon ended up making me experience both these things.

With sleep deprived faces, 75 30 South Suns (we’re not the same at night) gathered at Disneyland to volunteer at their annual run. Although many people complained about not doing anything for two hours, none of us expected the work we would be doing at 4 am. As a water station, we passed out Powerade and water to the runners that were on their first third of their half marathon. We prepared gallons upon gallons of blue Powerade. Our pace was fine at first because the race had not started, but we did not anticipate how many runners there would be. The runners came in a constant stream and there seemed to be no end. While the runners ran their half marathon, the volunteers also seemed to be in a marathon of staying awake and passing out Powerade.

Although the work was tiresome in those early hours, the spirit of Key Clubbers never really died down. Volunteers were constantly cheering for the runners and yelling “Powerade” until the word became jumbled and meaningless and voices were lost. Even as everything became sticky and blue and the ground looked as if it had rained paper cups and juice, the volunteers never gave up, running around to make the next batch of Powerade and fill cups.

The runners themselves were admirable. My constant motivation to not give up was that if the runners could run 13 miles, I could pass out some drinks. The runners were chipper, even after already having ran 4 miles. By their words and smiles, they seemed genuinely thankful for the drinks we provided. Volunteering at the half marathon was an experience that seems impossible to describe, and although none of us knew what we had signed 7 hours of our life up for, we all went home with a free Disneyland ticket, a newfound respect for marathon runners, and a huge desire to sleep.

Division Updates August DCM Reminders September DCM | Light the Night

Congrats to us for getting 2nd place in the Sunshining Club for the month of July but I know we can do better! BEE more involved Key Clubbers! ^_^

PTP otherwise known as Pediatric Trauma Prevention or Program is a project that the Kiwanis has been supporting for a very long time. Did you know that Unintentional injury is the #1 killer among children under 14? More than 90 percent of these injuries are preventable however the only way that we can prevent these diseases is if we make a difference! Many of these injuries are caused by a lack of equipment or protection. When the Kiwanis realized the need to decrease all of these accidental deaths, they created the Pediatric Trauma Program in 1994.

PTP is used to create and find programs to do many things. PTP trains pediatric doctors, nurses, and first responders to specialize in childcare. Also PTP finds programs to purchase much needed pediatric medical equipment such as incubators. It is also used to create and expand community outreach programs that teach the community about the importance of helmets, seat belts, and playground safety, etc.

There are many ways that we can help PTP. We can sponsor service projects that revolve around topics such as bicycle safety. We can also work with the Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Miracle Network which helps out with PTP often. Also we can host fundraisers so we are able to donate towards the cause. However this is only possible if we get every involved with the project. And it all starts with you. If you are free, come and help as much as you can!

Project Eliminate is a project that the Kiwanis family has supported for the last few years however this project is ending in October 2015. The Kiwanis Family and UNICEF teamed up to end MNT or maternal and neonatal tetanus that ends many new born babies and their mothers each year. The Kiwanis Family want to ELIMINATE this disease from all over the world however this is only possible with the help of Key Club! With the Project Eliminate, we have been able to eliminate MNT from many countries and most recently Madagascar! This was only possible with the help of us. With a dollar and 80 cents, we are able to save a mother and her child.

Recently at Officer Training Conference, we learned how our goal for Project Eliminate by October 2015 was to raise 500,000 dollars! This is only possible if we get all of your support and make sure that this project is successful. Project Eliminate has many ways for you to get involved for example, Whitney Key Club had a fundraiser where they sold apparel with the numbers 1234 printed on the front. This is to show the ages that you are supporting by purchasing the apparel.

Some more ideas include: -Give away flower pots exchange for a donation -Plan a Walk that donates it profits towards the project.

-Ask a local restaurant to hold a fundraiser with a profit going towards the Eliminate Project and so much more!
