EDITOR’S NOTE
A
loha Sunshines!
Now that school is in full swing, you can more be more active in all the clubs you’d like! It is definitely a good idea to join other clubs and participate in other activities too. You meet so many new people and you can learn new things everyday. What you shouldn’t do is drop everything and join every club you possibly can. Maybe join a lot of clubs during Club Rush, find what your niches are, and dedicate yourself to those clubs. Now, over the course of the school year, it may be difficult to keep up with your activities. Even so, you should try to go to meetings as often as you can or maybe just reading the emails so you know what’s going on. It makes a world of a difference when you make the effort to be involved because small changes can lead to huge impacts on your outlook on each new day. But honestly, don’t do something only because it will look good on a resume or college application. Step out of your comfort zone a little and do some things you really enjoy so you aren’t 100% work all day! Apart from Key Club, I also am a part of Oxford Academy’s Art Club. I really enjoy art and pursue it on my own time and it helps me chill out during especially stressful weeks. Being in Art Club with awesome people that love art as much as I do makes me so excited to come to school and I’ve made great friends along the way. If the clubs at our school aren’t your thing, maybe sports are more to your speed. My point is that find the things you love to do and really take the initiative to stick with it. Good luck! PRESIDENT’S CORNER
ello Key Clubbers! I hope you all are enjoying the first couple of weeks of school! I know getting into the swing of things is going to be difficult, but I have faith that all of you will do well this year! As the weeks progress, things are going to get a lot harder. Don't worry! there are lots of opportunities for you all to destress and find an outlet to your community. My recommendation is to rejoin Key Club! You’ll gain the opportunity to make new friends, gain community service hours, and become surrounded by a community that serves to better you. Speaking of joining Key Club, September will bring forth new members, as club rush is coming soon! Be sure to check out our booth in the quad and remember to sign up. Our secretary (Vivian Bui) and I will be constantly reminding you and updating you on membership for the club. Be sure to look out for us in your emails! I’d like to end this President’s Corner with a quote that I heard while I was struggling through my junior year. It’s a Jewish proverb that states, “I ask not for a lighter burden, but for broader shoulders.” This quote reminded me that I shouldn’t be asking for things to be easier, but for myself to be stronger. Throughout your time at Oxford, you’ll be challenged and crushed by the work and stress of your various classes and extracurriculars. Despite this, you should never wish for these responsibilities to go away, as they are what define your identity. If I were successful in wishing away my responsibilities, I would have thrown away my role in Key Club and given up a club that truly made me happy. Hope to see you all at club rush! — Alvin Hua

xford will have their first Club Rush of the year. This is a very important and exciting time where students get the opportunity to join the clubs they want, and they have four days to make their choices.
very year, all of Oxford Academy’s clubs flock in the quad in the hopes of attracting some new members into their clubs. Some put up tri-folds, others put up the awards they’ve collected over the years. Key Club however, takes out a giant flag and has people running around in sun suits in the hopes of bringing people into a club of loud, lovable weirdos. For the past few years, this has always worked, and I don’t expect it to change anytime soon. Key Club has always been “that” club. The one that everybody knows about, whether it be because of its huge membership count, its status as an international organization, or because of the fact that we’re always so loud.

There are many great clubs out there that students can join. Sometimes, people get over excited and just want to join all the clubs. However, what’s important is not the amount of clubs people join, but how involved and passionate they are about the club. One of clubs that many people often join is Key club. Key Club is about serving the community, creating friendships, and developing the four core values which are character building, leadership, caring, and inclusiveness. While shaping our character, Key Club opens up new doors for new experiences. So while you stop by different booths during club rush, don’t forget to join Key Club and help make a difference for yourself and your community.

When I look back on my times as a Key Clubber, I think about the times that I was cheering my heart out at DCM’s whenever people asked me how I felt. This Key Club spirit stays with you throughout your time in the club, and continues to stay a part of your personality. Along with this spirit however, is the Key Club purpose. The mission statement for Key Club is to serve the children of the world.

T
his past month’s DCM was a scavenger hunt held at La Mirada Park on the 27th. In collaboration with the D30N rhinos, we were caught up on upcoming events and participated in a scavenger hunt. It was really nice to have a shared DCM with another division because we met so many new people and worked together during the hunt. Everyone was very welcoming and we had a really great time with D30N LTG Snghyun Byon and her division. Seeing how friendly our fellow division was this DCM, I’m reminded of why I like Key Club so much. You could have never met someone before and yet they’ll treat you as if you’ve been friends forever. I’m super excited to partner with another division again in the upcoming service DCM for the month of September.

ot everyone acknowledges the painstaking hard work that goes into Key Club. Whether it be a school supplies drive or a division council meeting, the events and the people who plan them often get underappreciat-
ed. All of the behind-the-scenes Serving as an executive assistant and as a club secretary, I only witness a small portion of the hard work—usually performed by my Club President Alvin and LTG Kelly—that goes into these events. For my August article this month, I decided to dedicate it to our LTG Kelly Tran. Knowing her personally as her best friend, I know the goofy side to her. The aesthetic, Frank Ocean obsessing, weird meming, graphic designing photographer. Knowing her professionally as her EA, I understand her pain on a deeper level. Attending Kiwanis DCMs, Kiwanis meetings, DLT meetings, etc. with her, I have gotten to appreciate Kelly more. Her strong work ethic and the sacrifices that she makes for Key Club pushes me to be my best. She teaches me that although obstacles and technical difficulties are inevitable, you will be able to overcome them. I know that she feels underappreciated a lot of the time--and sometimes, I can relate on some levels. I just want everyone to acknowledge all the sacrifices, hard work, and time that she puts into this organization because L-O-V-E I love my LTG <3

BOLSA CHICA WETLANDS RESTORATION BRITTNEY LE || HISTORIAN
O
n August 20th, I attended the Bolsa Chica Wetland Restoration event. The entire division was able to participate. Although it was a bit early for some people on the weekends, it was definitely worth the time! At this event, we helped the conservancy with watering the plants that were growing. During the other half of the time, we helped out with taking out the copious amount of weed in the fields. Personally, I think it was a really fun event to attend because we not able to bond with everyone that went. I was able to hang out and talk to friends, and this was one of the events that allowed me to be able to get closer with people I normally don’t get the chance talk to.
Finally, I just want to give a huge shout out to everyone in our club who went because it was the morning right after a night of fun yet energy draining dancing. Even though they slept late and woke up early, they were all so willing to attend and help out with the Bolsa Chica Wetlands Center. You go Key Clubbers!

MUZEO ART CRAWL TRACY VU || PUBLICIST
I
’ve worked at the Art Crawl about 2 times now and I was surprised that they called for us to come back and volunteer for them. I think the art crawl is one of my favorite volunteer events because the organizers of the event are really cool and friendly. Not only that, after volunteer, you can check out the artists’ booths, they have some really cool artworks (I even bought one afterwards!). This volunteer is also a good chance to build your communication skills because it involves you having to talk to many strangers (mainly the artists that are parking in) and help you deal with expected trouble (which rarely happens so don’t fret!). I go to this event with my friend (who they also called to come) and she absolutely enjoys volunteering at the Art Crawls. Every time there’s an Art Crawl event she tells me to sign her up! I strongly recommend people to join this event in the future!

HOPE FOOD DISTRIBUTION HUDA SALEH || PROJECT CHAIR Although I have been to the bimonthly HOPE Food Distributions in the past, this event never fails to bring me joy. At this event, volunteers help set up by organizing all of the leftover food that the organizers are able to get from stores, like Costco, on tables. Each table is dedicated to a different type of food, for example, produce, bread, etc. Set up takes about an hour and then afterwards we usually wait a little bit for people to start lining up to get their food. To my knowledge, all of the people that come are financially unstable. Because of this fact, what we do as volunteers has a direct impact on their lives. It touches my heart when I hear the organizers of the event say that, “the event wouldn’t be possible without the help of their volunteers.” Knowing that I am able to give back to others in a way that is well-received and appreciated makes me proud to volunteer. My favorite part of this event is that I got to talk to the recipients asking them what type of bread they wanted, and physically distributed the food to them. Being a shy person, this

helped me practice how to communicate effectively in this type of situation and allowed me to feel more confident in what I was saying as I talked to more food recipients. I highly recommend this event to everyone, especially if you have never volunteered at it before. It is located just a couple blocks from our school down Grindlay Street, and it occurs the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month, so you’re bound to be free one of those days!
CONCERT ON THE GREENS JENIFFER LA || TECH EDITOR At my last Concert of the Green of the year, hosted by our family Cypress Kiwanis, our volunteers were ready to help with big smiles. As one of my favorite annual summer events, our Key Clubbers were having a great time serving the community while enjoying their time working with their friends. The volunteers set up the condiments, prepared the buns, and cleaned up efficiently. While dancing to the music from a local band, everyone enjoyed their time while getting to know the folks of the community in this happy environment that many call home.

Although this summer event ended, I’ll be sure to come back next year as a volunteer or even as a customer. The volunteers and the Kiwanis are the friendliest and caring people I know. I’ll for sure come back to this place, knowing how great OXFORD ACADEMY KEY CLUB
