EDITOR’S NOTE

ello Suns! Thank you for checking out the first issue of Sunny Side Up! This issue is titled sunrise to kick off the start of the 16 - 17 term. I can’t put in to words how excited I am to be part of your Key Club Board and be working with amazing fellow members.

I want to start off by introducing myself. Hi! I’m Tammy Pham, currently a sophomore at Oxford Academy and I really like corgis and most dogs (but especially corgis). I want to quickly note that I definitely want to get to know you all, so don’t hesitate to say hi or introduce yourself! I will be a bit (pleasantly) surprised but don’t worry, I’ll adjust (and it will make my day)! I’m your new bulletin editor for this term and I will be releasing monthly newsletters, well, every month, to recap what happened in the previous month and let you know about new opportunities and events in the coming month. Each issue will contain articles, pictures, a calendar, and more! If you want to have the chance to be featured, write an article about your experience with Key Club, something you want to see, or a Key Club/ Kiwanis event and email it to yours truly! The month of April was super busy for Key Clubbers with the annual DCON, monthly DCM, Division Banquet, and selection of the shiny new appointed board and DLT. I think being on board or DLT will be a really memorable experience and highly recommend anyone dedicated to Key Club to apply next year. But as of right now, I’m so psyched to be serving our club. How do YOU feel? Major events coming up include Club Banquet, the OC marathon, Tinkerbell Half-Marathon, and May DCM at Loara. I hope to see you all there! Also, this issue of OAKC newsletter is the first and there’s a lot to be improved, feel free to talk to me about what can be improved or other things you would like to see. Finally, after all that, I would like to wish you all the best in the storm of AP exams and finals coming in the near future. Yes, it’s going to be stressful and hectic but don’t beat yourself up and remember to take time for yourself. That being said, make sure to give it your all and don’t give up, very cliché I know, but its true. Keep on shining, Suns! This term is going to be a wonderful one!

PRESIDENT’S CORNER ello Key Clubbers! Welcome to the first newsletter for this term! This is Alvin, your new president for the following term, and I’m excited to have the opportunity to take this club to new heights during this term. Since I’m sure a good portion of you don’t know much about me yet, here are some fun facts to get to know me.

1. I get on average, 5 hours of sleep per night. Whether it be from the pounding stress of school, or my duties to serve my extracurriculars well, I end up being sleep deprived. (Especially during AP week, don’t even get me started…) 2. Even though I might be sleep deprived all of the time, don’t take this as a sign of me being unapproachable. I love meeting new people, and if you come up to me during a DCM or an event, I’ll be sure to talk to you! 3. I absolutely LOVE chemistry! I fell in love with it back in 10th grade when I took honors chemistry. I found out I loved chemistry when I realized my favorite days of the week were Wednesdays, since I got to be in chemistry AND go to a Key Club meeting! I’m currently planning on doing dual enrollment in the near future to further pursue my passion for chemistry. 4. To counter my intense love for chemistry, I absolutely HATE ranch. I honestly have no idea why anybody would put such a disgusting thing on their food. It’s super viscous, awful tasting, and makes the food so much more unhealthy. If you ever expose me to ranch, I’ll probably just run away into a corner and eat carrots without any dressing. And that’s it for me! If any of you want to know more about me, feel free to refer to fun fact #2 and just talk to me. As for now, I need to go back to studying for AP’s and crying about my chances at college admissions. To any of you who are in the same boat as I am and struggling with the looming terror that are AP exams, just remember that after these few weeks of pain, you’ll be set on the path to a fun summer! (Hopefully filled with volunteering for Key Club) As for now, remember to work hard in school, and continue to serve your community!

NH Key Club hosts an annual District Convention where Key Clubbers from ALL OVER CALIFORNIA, NEVADA, AND HAWAII gather to celebrate the end of the old term, and the beginning of the new term. Over three days, we all attended workshops, watched clubs get recognized for their hard work, and danced the night away at Governor’s Ball. Since DCON was a three-day event, I will just highlight my favorite memories from each day.

Day Zero: Before DCON even started, my home club decided to have a sleepover at my house. Initially, I thought that the sleepover was going to be the most awkward thing in the world, however, I was pleasantly surprised. While three of the eight of us passed out after 4 hours, the rest of us stayed up until 4:30 am. We bonded over listening to Big Time Rush and KPOP, dabbing, gambling with goldfish puffs, finishing our club scrapbooks, and stacking food and DVDs on our sleeping IP treasurer (Ryan Zeng). Day One: DCON was held in Sacramento this year, meaning that our division had to take a 7 hour bus ride. Since I spent the majority of the bus ride asleep, my favorite memory of this day was when we actually arrived at the hotel. Day Two: I’m incredibly sorry for everyone who sat by me during General Session #3. I know that I was extremely annoying as I repeatedly chanted “USA” and “sunpai” while John was on stage. I just COULDN’T KEEP IN MY EXCITEMENT as Division 30 South and my home club got recognized for so many achievements. My favorite memory was when everyone started chanting “we want ratchet” during Governor’s Ball, but the DJ responded by playing Taylor Swift and Twenty-One Pilots. Day Three: This day was extremely bittersweet as it finally hit me that the seniors are leaving, and my term as OAKC’s secretary was just about to begin. My favorite memory from was from the bus ride home when three of my friends and I decided to switch our phone’s with another person. Each person gets 10 minutes to embarrass that person as much as they can; then we rotated the phones around. This may have been extremely humiliating, however, it forced me to talk to people that I’ve never spoken to before (i.e. this is how I started talking to my future executive assistant partner!!). Although District Convention may be pricey, it was an extremely EYE-OPENING and worthwhile experience for me as I got to meet new people and reunited with old friends from around the CNH District. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND those of you who intend on furthering your Key Club careers to go next year!

didn’t pick up calls from random numbers. I still don’t. But it turned out that this phone call was going to be one that opened doors to NEW OPPORTUNITIES.

It was on March 23, 2016 when I received the news. […] My friend, Ashley Sun, messaged me asking if I got in. I actually had absolutely no idea what she was talking about. She explained to me that she was talking about getting into Key Club Board and informed me that they notified you by call. I then looked at my phone and noticed that I had two missed calls. I guess, by the third call, it had to be something pretty big, seeing as though the same number called me three times within the last minute or two. Third time’s a charm, so I decided to answer the call. […] I had made Key Club Board as one of their three historians. I came to an understand that it was a huge responsibility, and although it was a bit too much at first, there were ALWAYS PEOPLE THERE TO HELP YOU OUT. […] Taking pictures is something that I thoroughly enjoy doing. Even though there are many duties, I know it’ll go well because when you do something you love, it’s not any much more of a hassle. It is more of a pastime. From then, I knew that this year was going to be FULL OF MEMORIES AND LAUGHS.

…]When I first got the “call”, […] I had ignored it. […] The second time my phone rang, I ignored it once again. However, the third time, I decided it must be something important and picked it up hearing “Vina, you made it to Key Club Board”. I was so happy and excited. I was just brightly smiling and super energetic the whole day after the call.

I am excited to work with my publicist partner, the Key Club board, and everyone else. For the 2016-17 term, as publicist my goals are to heighten others’ interest of Key Club and its events through effectively publicizing, and get many people to be more involved. I hope I will be able to accomplish my goals for Key Club and DEVELOP AS A PERSON, specifically the four core values of Key Club—LEADERSHIP, CHARACTER BUILDING, CARING, and INCLUSIVENESS.

fter being on DLT for 13 months during the past term, it kind of felt like déjà vu when I saw five of my fellow Oxford Key Clubbers get crowned to be part of the new DLT for the 2016-2017 term. I remember April DCM last year just like it was yesterday, and being on DLT was such a GREAT EXPERIENCE for me. I am extremely excited for the new and returning DLT members because I know they will ALL DO AMAZING THINGS this term. Although not being on DLT again this year may feel bitter sweet, I am super excited to be serving Oxford club board as one of the new project chairs along with my partner Helen Phan! Our jobs as project chairs is to find all of the volunteer events that you guys sign up for! I know that right now there may not be a lot of events, but hopefully once we get used to things, you will see more events to go to on the weekly agendas. Feel free to come up to me during school or just message me if you know of any events or have any new ideas that we could do for a self-planned service event! Honestly, I am just really glad to be on Key Club board again this year because Key Club is one of the few places where I FEEL LIKE I REALLY BELONG. I hope that I will be able to do my position justice and continue to allow our club to be a top club in our division. Thank you to everyone who has helped me to get where I am. I want to congratulate everyone on the new board, and let’s make this term a great one!

New Beginnings

I remember where I was exactly a year ago, incredibly nervous to be serving as one of the club’s historians for the 15-16 term. It’s crazy to think that in that one short year, so much could have happened. From making NEW FRIENDSHIPS with the old board, to going out to all of those DCMs, to going to DCON for the first time, my whole journey this past term has seemed so surreal. And now, I have the opportunity to serve the club as your Vice President of Administration. I couldn’t be more PROUD. […] You know the phrase: new year, new me? Well, it couldn’t hold any more true for a new term. So much has changed from the previous term to this one, and I still feel the same as I felt exactly one year ago. I’m still that same immature boy whose only goal in school is to tryhard his way to the top. But this new term is a chance to CHANGE MYSELF. This boy isn’t coming in blind anymore. This upcoming term, I have set many GOALS FOR MYSELF: to reach 350 service hours, to befriend all of my board members, and to get Distinguished Vice President. Thus, this new beginning isn’t about a new beginning for myself, it’s the beginning of me trying my absolute hardest to CHANGE THIS CLUB FOR THE BETTER. And I couldn’t be more ready.

his night was the night of the MANY FIRSTS: first crier, first division banquet and more. I wasn’t planning to go to division banquet at first but I figured that I should try something new.

[…] I’m glad that I went to banquet because it was a great experience and makes me look forward to next year’s Division Banquet. During banquet, we read notes from the box, played trivia games and watched the DLT skits. Not the mention, the cookies were really good. […] Key club is like a SECOND FAMILY. People shared their experience being in key club and how the club welcomed them into their OHANA. In times when they support, their club was able to lend a helping hand. It’s JUST OUR WAY OF CARING. Division banquet is a chance bond with your second family, to recap all the special memories and achievements the division made, and to just be there and celebrate what we do to GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY.

o conclude the end of the term, Division 30 South held its annual banquet, inviting people from all over the division to celebrate a term […] This having been my first division banquet, I was eager to see the reflective words our division had for the term, as well as the tearful goodbyes our members had.

Despite the inevitability of the term ending, much of the division was still in denial that the term was nearly over, hoping that the friends they made, and the experiences they had would LAST A LIFETIME. But who’s to say this isn’t possible? As individuals, we are given the opportunities to DECIDE OUR OWN FATES and the paths we take to that fate. I know that when my time as Oxford Academy Key Club’s President is over, the friends and memories I made these past years will last a lifetime. Whether it be Lamont and Sal, two Kiwanians I met when I first started volunteering, or Emily Huynh, my IP President, I know that these people and the memories we shared will stay with us forever. As for now, I’m catching one last glimpse of this term before I make progress on mine. To John Hoang: Thank you for all of your hard work. The division is forever GRATEFUL FOR YOUR DEDICATION. A year ago, you watched your suns rise. Now, take a step back and know that your SUNS ARE SET.

t the annual April DCM: Sunny Olympics, it was led by the bright and beautiful Kelly Tran! The FIRST EVER DCM to kick off this term, she began with our meeting, giving us updates, recaps, and information about future events. Through her quirky awkwardness, she led the meeting smoothly. (Can I get an OH YEAH for KELLY?)

Following the DCM, we started our activities. With a fabulous fashion show, Vivian Bui, Crystal Ramirez, and Joshua Le did a great job representing our patriotic colors with USA and our famous “OXFORD jumping jacks.” After, we teamed up with our club buddies (Magnolia, Fairmont, and Los Al) to challenge other teams in a fun version of Tic-Tac-Toe and water buckets squeeze. Even though we lost for both games, it was great seeing our clubs not only WORK TOGETHER and BOND, but seeing them HAVING FUN in this time as we head closer to testing!

Finally, we had a quick game of water balloon toss with a partner from different schools and then to end the day, a relay race. Through the fun and games, everyone made a new friend, bringing our whole division closer! This DCM was a great way to kick start this new term! I can’t wait to see what Kelly has in store for us next DCM so be sure to come out for May DCM where we will be making dog toys at Loara High School on May 14 from 1-3 PM! It’ll be a great way to earn service hours and meet new people! Keep on SHINING sunnies!!!

still can’t get over the fact that the NEW TERM has already started. Anyways, around two or three weeks ago, Kelly Tran, our new LTG for the 16-17 term, hosted her first DCM at Modjeska Park. The theme was Sunny Olympics, so we played numerous games such as water balloon toss, Huggy Bear, and sponge relays with our club buddies. It was great to be able to BOND WITH PEOPLE that I didn’t normally talk to, especially since our buddy groups were different from last year. One of the more memorable highlights of the day was also the division fashion show; we sent three of Oxford’s best dressed representatives to scream out Oxford while doing jumping jacks. We were all doubled over laughing, and even though we didn’t win it was still ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS. Kelly also appointed her NEW DLT at the DCM, so shoutout to Julianne, Amber, Vivian Luong, Trust, and Vivian Bui! I know you guys will help lead the term to GREAT HEIGHTS.

pril DCM was the one DCM I participated in this quarter, and it sure was fun! Not only was it the first DCM planned by the new lieutenant governor, but the new DLT was announced. It was exciting to see who were the next leaders in our division.

Aside from the speeches given in the beginning, the best opening to our day was the fashion show. Everyone was SPIRITED in their red, white, and blue from Oxford Academy, so the fashion went well without a hitch. Oxford jumping jacks for the win! The next game was the water race. About 20 people from each team had to line up in front of a bucket of water, with a sponge in it, and run to the other bucket to transfer the water through the sponge. I sat out on this one, but it was still fun to watch people participate in the game. […] Last but not least, the relay race was being set up. Sadly, I had to leave as my ride was there. I wasn’t disappointed, however, as the day had been fun enough. Waving goodbye to my club, I walked home with some FUN MEMORIES.
