H
ello Suns!
Time flew so quickly this year! How’s summer break treating you? Take some time for yourself to kick back and rest up for the next school year. Summer is also a great opportunity to pursue volunteering opportunities like sports, internships, classes, or volunteering. There’s so much you can do during these months if you look. Volunteering is year round, so if you’re free just take a look at Key Club Facebook page and sign up for an event! You can also go to the monthly DCMs. This is another opportunity to get even more volunteer hours! Service DCMs give about 1 or 2 hours and you get to hang out with other members of the division. Other DCMs are simply bonding and fun activities like Dodgeball. Apart from Key Club, I really hope you all enjoy your summer and go outside and whatnot. Basically, make the most of your summer. In this issue, we recap club banquet, May DCM, and other volunteer events that occurred in the month of May. If you’d like to be featured in the next newsletter, write an article on anything about Key Club and send it to Alvin, Jeniffer, Matthew, Vivian, and me. Our contact info can be found on the last page! This month, this DCM is also a service one (volunteer hours!) in which we will be making PBJ sandwiches for donation to the Long Beach Rescue Mission. *BONUS* you can get more hours if you sign up to bring items to make sandwiches, the link is on Facebook. PRESIDENT’S CORNER ello Suns!
Hope your summer is going well so far! I’m sure this departure from constant testing and homework has been a breath of fresh air from the troubles of school. As you take a well-deserved break from school, just keep in mind that Key Club is still active during the summer. What’s better than a break spent serving with wonderful people? In addition, you’ll be a little bit closer to the 100 hour goal that every Key Clubber is reaching for. Whether it be at the Concert on the Green or the St. Irenaeus Festival, Key Club has been providing volunteer opportunities for its members every summer. These events, unlike those during the school year, are during the afternoon. This means that you can finally sleep in on your Saturdays while still being able to volunteer! Not only that, but these events have a refreshing ambience, something that is much needed by the average Oxford student. You’ll be allowed to volunteer into the night, where you’ll be able to experience the cool summer air and bright lights present within a summer night. If you would like to read more about Key Club during the summer, be sure to check out my article! Some of my best experiences in Key Club were spent volunteering with my friends during the summer, and I’m sure that if you do so as well, you won’t regret it. The memories I made during these summers, although buried underneath the mountains of work I’m faced with, are both a piece of my identity, and completely unforgettable. --Alvin Hua

Club Banquet

O
n May 6th, Oxford Academy Key Club held its annual club banquet at Marie Callendar's to welcome the new board and officially say goodbye to the graduating seniors. We began the night signing thankyou cards for our beloved seniors, and then the new board performed a Mean Girls skit, in which I played Cady. Afterwards, we transitioned into reading Love Box notes while eating dinner. Lastly, we finished off with an open mic session. Last year's banquet was so much more different than this year—probably because I wasn’t the same shy freshman.

year felt more lively and more inclusive. I cannot put into words how much I love our adorably, quirky club. I love the awkward moments that we shared during the embarrassing Mean Girls skit and the funny memes that we read during Love Box. I love the tears that rimmed at my eyes from laughing so hard at the senior speeches. Throughout the Love Box reading and speeches, I honestly felt like our advisors were weirded out by our zaniness, but I wouldn’t trade any of these experiences for the world.

W
ith club banquet on May 6, OAKC officially wrapped up the 15-16 year and welcomed in the new upcoming term. I remember going to banquet last year as a freshman, same time of year, same place. It was a little bit awkward for me since I didn’t know most of the people there. Looking back, those strangers have become family to me. It was a long, difficult journey, but together we made it. And now we’ve welcomed in the new 16-17 board, and I have no doubt that we will take this term to great heights. To all the seniors: thank you for all of the hard work and dedication that you’ve put into this club. We’ll miss you so much next year, and it will be hard to fill in your shoes, but y’all will do amazing things in college and whatever else the future holds in store for you. I’m so proud of all of you and wish you nothing but the best. It’s been a wild ride. But for the rest of us, it’s only beginning. Here’s to the 2016-2017 term!

T
his year I was super hyped for club banquet. It was held at Marie Callendar’s in Anaheim inside a nice private room where our group of 30 or so people (all of which were familiar faces to me) got together to celebrate our year/years in Key Club. As a treat, the
new board performed a skit that was based off of the movie Mean Girls. I really enjoyed performing the skit even though I was supposed to act mean but couldn’t keep a straight face. It was satisfying when some people laughed at my lines, but props to Matthew Phan for giving me faf things to say as Regina George. Aside from the skit, I really enjoyed listening to all of the senior speeches. It made me think of what I might have to say by the time I’m a senior. Key Club has been a big part of my high school career so far, and I really hope that I can go up and talk during open mic when I am a senior and be just as passionate as many of them were. I just hope to stay involved in Key Club for the next two years, and be as excited about the people and the club as I am now! Although there weren’t any waterworks at banquet, it was still a memorable and fun event. OXFORD ACADEMY KEY CLUB MAY 2016

MAKING DOG TOYS

M
ay DCM was a great way to end AP Testing with a joyful smile. Rekindling with my fellow friends after a stressful two weeks of testing, we were able to enjoy bonding and doing something that impacts our community. Here’s a quick recap: After settling into the gym, we started off with our monthly meeting, led by the beautiful Kelly Tran. Updating us about past and future events as well as our progress as a division, we learned a lot and set goals for the start of the term, Soon after, we did “doggybear” which were led by our three wonderful spirit commissioners and then soon started our service event. Hanging with my friends and seeing the wonderful John Hoang, I truly enjoyed this DCM because of the fun times I had with my fellow friends from other schools and got closer to my board members!

TAMMY PHAM || BULLETIN EDITOR This was the 1st service DCM of the new term. We made dog toys to donate to a local animal shelter. It was a really great experience to have gotten to bond with the rest of the division while giving back to the community. After listening to division updates, we played a bonding game and then moved onto making the dog toys. From there, we went on to make dog toys, talk to other members, and listen to music. By the end of the DCM, it was amazing to see how many dog toys the members of the division worked together to produce. The DCM was a great experience and it was nice to do something for the community as well.

O
n May 1st, I went to the Women's Club of Cypress Tea event. It was one of my first volunteering events that I attended and took pictures at, and it went pretty successfully. The hosts and guests were all so friendly, and the general atmosphere of the event was bubbly. At this event, fellow Key Clubbers and I got to serve both elders and children. We refilled their tea pots and served them little sandwiches, while enjoying the company. Through this event, I was able to meet the other people in Key Club that I normally didn't talk to. It was fun getting to know the others and actually getting a chance to talk to them because on a different case, we'd never had talked. Not only did I make new friends, but I've come to learn that they were hilarious, fun people. Moreover, I learned that I actually enjoyed making new friends and getting to catch up with those that I wasn't close to. That's one of my favorite things about Key Club: you get to volunteer and help the community, while making new friends. I've also always wanted to attend a tea party ever since seeing it on television shows, so it was great to finally be able to experience that in a way! If I had the chance to go to another tea party event, I definitely would, and I'd bring my friends too!
HELEN PHAN || PROJECT CHAIR
T
his event happened in previous years. It was my first time, and I was excited. When I first arrived, it was almost empty, expect for a few tents and chairs being set up. Yet, after an hour of work, the tents, chairs, and everything else were right in place. There was also a band that played some great American tunes. I even met my old band teacher there!
LA PALMA MEMORIAL SERVICE
When the service started, volunteers were not needed until clean up. So we sat there for about an hour, listening to heartwarming stories from veterans and appreciating those in the audience that are in army. The band was also playing songs such as Yankee Doodle and the songs for each division for the army. It was a wonderful ceremony and made everyone appreciate memorial day. One the ceremony ended, we started cleaning up right away. The hard work we put in early that day was no longer evident as we put the items, such as chairs, away. When the event was over, it was a nice eye opener to see how many people are fighting for our country. Thanks to this, I learned to appreciate the little things in life.

KEY CLUB IN THE SUMMER ALVIN HUA || PRESIDENT
A
s the school year ends, excited students begin to talk of college application padding, carefree beach days, and hanging out with friends. Luckily, all three of these amazing summer plans can be completed alongside your fellow Key Clubbers! Looking to pad your college applications? Key Club gives you the opportunity to do so, with various volunteer opportunities being provided every week! You’ll have the opportunity to gain a bunch of volunteer hours through an amazing club. Not only will this club allow you to accumulate volunteer hours, but you’ll be surrounded by driven young minds that will inspire you to invoke change outside of Key Club. If you just want to go to the beach, you can do that as well! Every July is Region 3’s joint DCM, Beach Boomba. Here, Key Clubbers from all 7 divisions within the region will meet and enjoy a fun time at the beach. What’s more fun than enjoying your summer with some amazing Key Clubbers? For those of you who don’t like the beach, don’t fret! There are still more opportunities to bond with your friends. Apart from the monthly DCM’s, Key Club has tons of summer volunteering events. Invite your friends to volunteer with you, and rack up those hours for that graduation stole. Not only will you be able to serve your community, but you’ll be able to spend those days serving with your friends. Be the one to make steps towards the college of your dreams, towards fun beach days, and towards unforgettable nights

ummer has come—no school, no homework, no test, and nothing to really worry about! Some of us even have so much free time on our hands that we don’t even know what to do. Well, no fear, volunteer is here! There are many volunteer opportunities during the summer. It is the perfect time to get in many volunteer hours. Many organizations have volunteer for students like the library, parks, and food pantries. If you cannot find one, Key Club always has many events to volunteer at, from Hope Food Distribution, which is very other Saturday in the morning, and many other fun events. So it is important to check your emails and look out for updates on Instagram or Facebook to volunteer!

Our graduating class had done so much for key club and so much for us individual. Our OAKC Seniors have created a legacy that is hard to even match. Our seniors had such an incredible impact on me personally. These were the people who showed me what key club was. These first people I ever met in the club. These are the people I had come to admire. These are the people who I’ve created memories with, good and bad ones. The seniors who I love very dearly but wouldn’t always show it. You will all be missed. The

T
he Anaheim Children’s Festival was a blast to volunteer at. I was pretty tired the day before but was still willing to help out. I was glad to volunteer there because I used to be one of those kids that attended these festivals and now I’m the one helping out. I volunteered at the booth were we were helping kids make pipe art. It was adorable when I saw the little kids’ faces light up when they saw me make a flower for them. It was even cuter when they gave it to their parents. After volunteering I didn’t realize it at first but I found myself smiling because the kids were happy. I was so amazed that these kids found happiness in the tiniest of things. It puts into perspective how we should be grateful for the things we take for granted. This day wasn’t just an average volunteering but also a lesson to enjoy life.

any of our division’s key clubbers came out to help with the Children’s Festival this month. Honestly I was amazed at how proactive and helpful everyone is. Many of us patrolled the area, asking if any of the workers needed help while a few of us manned the rewards booth. Key clubbers helped each other out as well, letting the patrollers have a rest at the rewards booth and switching jobs when they felt it was necessary. This event was so fun because we were able to participate in the booths and bond with others in the division as well as hang out with our own friends over volunteering. The atmosphere was cheerful and the children were so cute. Not to mention we got our own pairs of Minnie ears! I strongly encourage those who weren’t able to volunteer this round, to participate in this volunteering opportunity next time.
