PRESIDENT’S CORNER Fundraisers and Charities October is a big month for fundraising. We have the Trick or Treat for UNICEF project, and it’s our last chance to raise money for PTP. Trick or Treat for UNICEF is a two week long event. Members are encouraged to bring around their own orange boxes and collect change from their friends and family. Members who want to go above and beyond are encouraged to go trick or treating with their box. As they go around their neighborhood to ask for candy, they can also inform people about UNICEF and where the money they are raising is going. Hopefully, people will be willing to donate their change to the cause. $1.80 will provide a vaccination for a mother and her child which will keep them safe. The Pediatric Trauma Program is one of Key Club’s main charities. From June to November, Key Clubs work to raise money for this program. The money the division raises is used at Fall Rally for the LTG auction. Divisions that put up the highest bid get the opportunity to spend time with the LTG or district member for an hour. Pediatric trauma is the number one leading cause of death for children under the age of 14. This includes accidents such as burns, drowning, poisoning, falls, and car crashes. Even though these are all preventable, it is still the leading cause of death.

EDITOR’S NOTE October Reflection Welcome back to the Oxford Academy Key Club Newsletter! Just wanted to start off by saying thank you for taking the time to read these! Newsletters are definitely time consuming and a lot of hard work, so it always makes me happy when our members read through them! Anyways, October was definitely a hectic time for OAKC. From fundraisers to spirit nights to the Oxford talent show, all of our members were busy getting those service hours and making our community a better place. October was also the month of Region Training Conference! I remember going to this event last year and having a great time learning about all the positions I could apply for the following year. This time around, however, the workshops I went to were very college –based. My high school years have been very strongly defined by Key Club and my experiences in it, so I definitely want to continue doing something like this in college. And thanks to the Circle K people that presented about Key Club in college, I’m excited for what the future holds. In the meantime, though, I’ll enjoy my last few months of OAKC. This month was also the OC Japan Fair and the SoCal VegFest! Funnily enough, these two events happened on the same weekend and were located right next to each other. I went to the VegFest and had lots of fun helping around and being fed lots of very yummy vegan food!! :)

Spirit Nights + Oxford Acad

October was full of prep for Fall Rally South, as members should have attended 2 out of the 4 spirit nights. The first spirit night had been held at Savanna High School’s gym from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, October 18th. The second spirit night was held at Twila Reid Park on Saturday, October 26th from 4:00 – 6:00 PM. I didn’t attend Fall Rally South last year, so I wasn’t prepared for how loud the spirit nights would be! My voice was so hoarse after the first spirit night, but at least my group won candy for chanting the cheers well! The first spirit night started with all members being assigned to different teams. The way the spirit team split us up was unorthodox, as a colored string was wrapped around our wrist. That color was then your team; for instance, I got a red ribbon, so I was on team Red. After getting into our groups, the spirit team split themselves up and had approximately one or two spirit team members to lead their group with the cheers. Ali, our LTG, along with other spirit team members, would chant the cheers first, then have us repeat it, then called on specific teams to repeat it by themselves. The cheers we learned at the first spirit night for Round One was Mahalo From Apollo, Suns Grunt, and Solar Hour. At the second spirit night, everyone seemed to be quieter overall with their cheers. This may be attributed to the fact that our location was outside, so sound isn’t trapped in one space, but the spirit team was extra harsh on us. For Round Two, we learned BRUSH UP, We Are Number One, and Keep the Heat. Although I was able to repeat the cheers just fine, for both Rounds One and Two I struggled with the hand motions and footwork. Overall, both spirit nights were extremely fun, as everyone in division 30 south was incredibly spirited through yelling, jumping, stomping, and more.

This year, Key Club had the opportunity to receive the money from the people’s choice voting. All of the money we got will go to the Pediatric Trauma Program. Timmy and I got to give an informative speech about PTP after all the acts had performed. We waited on the side, discussing how well we thought we would do with the drive. I predicted around $75 and my treasurer, Grace, predicted $50. To our surprise, the ASB Vice President came back to us with the news that we had raised $550! I was surprised by this large amount. From just watching the jars being passed around, I don't remember seeing that many dollar bills. ither way, the amount we raised from this event will help us contribute to the division goal of $10000. For Oxford Academy Key Club alone, we raised $1500 more than we did last year, which is a huge increase.

Oh my, was OTC really just four months ago? A whole quarter has already passed by, and this month D30S, along with the other six divisions in Region 3, gathered once again to participate in Region Training Conference, which is basically OTC except it’s open to all general Key Club members! The Region event took place on October 12 at Bolsa Grande HS from 11AM-5PM; a good six hours of some helpful Key Club content for those of you interested in pursuing positions next year. Sessions followed a schedule nearly identical to the one at OTC, although the topics definitely varied in some parts since the event was no longer exclusive to just officers. Lastly, the Time and Stress Management workshop was a good way to end the day of

somewhat daunting information about Key Club positions, and I was able to relax during this session to listen to others recommend ways that they relieve or cope with stress. Overall, Region 3 Care Bea-RTC is definitely an event that I would recommend to new Key-Clubbers who want to pursue positions within the different levels, whether it’s as an officer in the club, an officer in the Division Leadership Team, or in the district as an LTG.
Tiffany Ong | 10 | Historian The annual Region Training Conference, or RTC, was on October 12th this year and it was the first RTC that I’ve ever attended. I was honestly expecting it to be boring, but the people there made it interesting and fun. :) One workshop that I attended was Web Design and CyberKEY, which was hosted by Caden Hise, the LTG of Division 04 East. It was really fun because he was constantly complaining about how the websites were already due, so he said that there was really no point in having the workshop at RTC. But after he explained the basics of CyberKEY, we still had a lot of time left over, so we just talked about random things. It was really fun, and funny, so I really enjoyed that workshop! I also went to the Member Recognition and Distinguished Awards workshop, hosted by Ali, the LTG of our division, and Kristie Poon, the district treasurer. Before attending the workshop, I didn’t have a great understanding of how the awards worked. I learned about the many things I had to do in order to get a membership award, which I wasn’t aware of before. It actually taught be a lot about the club in general, and one of the most important things that I learned from the workshop was that the “B” in Key Club has to align with the start of the pencil’s tip according to the Key Club graphic standards. It made me realize how specific the rules are when making graphics for the club, and that every little detail matters. The last workshop I attended was the Time and Stress Management Workshop, hosted by Diego Solorio, the LTG of Division 04 West. He introduced a really meaningful quote that stuck to me: “The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.” It actually made me think about what I was spending time on and that I need to take time for myself, instead of constantly doing work. We also learned many ways to relieve stress and about power poses! I think the workshop was really helpful to me and surprisingly, it helped me deal with my stress. Overall, the workshops that I attended were unexpectedly very fun and I learned a lot from each of them. I thought it would be more like school, where we just learned things that I wouldn’t be too interesting. But the people hosting the workshops were actually very effective in communicating their ideas, and I learned a lot more about Key Club. There were also many people from different divisions at RTC, so it was super fun meeting new people!

This was the second Region Training Conference that I attended. Overall, it was a solid experience as expected.
Region Training Conference was my first DCM last year. It was incredibly eye-opening to me. As a sophomore, I never understood the point of Key Club other than to volunteer. I watched my friends go to DCMs and Socials, yet I had no clue as to what or why they went. Obviously, RTC shocked the heck out of me.
Nothing really changed about the structure and the concept of RTC from last year to this year; the only big change I could recall was the addition of a mini spirit battle among the divisions. However, I think my attitude on the event changed because my position was different. I am more involved this year as a secretary compared to last year as a historian, so maybe this is why I felt differently about RTC. Some of the workshops were interesting, and it definitely opened my eyes about some of the gears that keep CNH Key Club running. The opening and closing sessions were normal, and I was glad to have had a good time with my friends throughout the experience. I had fun with my usual friends, talked with some of the members that I wasn't as close to, and even reconnected with several people from other divisions. So although RTC wasn't the most exciting event, it was still worth the experience and was an important part of my continual journey as a Key Clubber.

When I went it seemed like there were thousands of Key Clubbers. I did not realize the scope of Key Club, nor did I realize the impact it had socially. Like most people, when I first did the cheers I was weirded out. I felt like I was in Kindergarten when the LTG was telling us to shush like a waterfall. As I walked around, I saw people in Black Suits. Obviously, black suits meant they were important. What I didn’t understand was the How Do You Feel? Questions asked to those in the black suits. It seemed like at random times throughout the day they would just go out in chant. Honestly, I thought Key Club was like a cult. Obviously, I understand now. The cheers and socials and meetings may seem useless, but they are incredibly meaningful. This is the one thing that all the other clubs lack. Fun. Sure, you are not going to be getting industry certificates or win quarterly academic competitions, but you are most certainly having fun. Fun is one thing that people, especially Oxnerds, seem to be missing.

This month I attended Region Training Conference. It was lively and full of Key Club spirit, and I had an amazing time.
RTC was lots of fun this year. We had a spirit battle and DCM there, so it was super busy. We also had a special guest, Kristie Poon, who told us about the dire financial status of CNH during her treasurer workshops. I attended both of them, just because I was curious I guess. I also attended the Member Recognition workshop, where Ali talked about how to make a portfolio. It looks like a lot of work. I’m not excited. It made me really reflect on how much I did as a vice-president. Could I fill up 50 pages of my work? I’m not really sure. Portfolio or not, it means I need to work harder this year to fulfill my role as a VP. Finally, at the LTG 101 workshop, Ali and William sped through their experience with serving as LTGs. It was interesting. I think being LTG would be pretty cool.
Besides the “finish the lyrics” ice breaker, my favorite part was definitely going to all of the workshops! They were very information and I learned a lot about Key Club (Circle K) and life after high school. The first workshop I attended was for Bulletin Editors, where I learned more about my role and duties. The second workshop was a college panel, where members of Circle K from varying colleges answered questions about the application process, life as a college student, and more. The third workshop was about the development of the teen brain, and I learned a lot about how teens process information. Finally, the fourth workshop I attended was Circle K specific, and it talked about how graduating seniors can remain involved in the organization and community service.
Though I had to leave early and missed the ending session, I had a great time at RTC, and I’m looking forward to joining Circle K in the near future.

Helen Tran | 11 | Project Chair “What’s poppin’ Region 3?” Ah, yes, Region 3. The rainbow region. The most spirited of them all. The greatest region ever (primarily because of D30S of course). In all seriousness, it’s amazing to see Region 3 come together for events such as this one. It reminds me of just how great Key Club’s impact extends. Getting together with the region is also an amazing way to make new friends and hear about their personal key club experiences! This year was my first year attending the training conference as an officer. Last year, I attended out of pure curiosity, and this year I attended because I wanted to explore ways to immerse myself even further into Key Club. A wide variety of workshops were held, ranging from Key Club 101 to the Presidents’ workshop.

All the LTG’s were so kind and I have a lot of respect for all that they do for Key Club! I had the honor of attending a workshop hosted by Ali, our lovely D30S LTG, and Kristie Poon, the district treasurer. Their personalities were so energetic despite the hectic day and they delivered the presentation smoothly. It was an eyeopening experience to see the genuine passion that they had while presenting about Key Club. It left me inspired with the desire to spread this passion towards more students in the Oxford community. Although I left the event early, I still left with plenty of valuable lessons and memories. This event stirred up my Key Club spirit (getting ready for FRS!) and also gave me a friendly little reminder of my purpose in Key Club. I can’t wait to be reunited with all of Region 3 AND see the CNH district at Fall Rally South 2019!
Grace Nguyen | 11 | Treasurer To think that we’ve completed half of our term this year. I’m shocked. We only have five more months until DCON 2020. We have four more months until a new appointed board is chosen. There’s three more months until executive elections. Two more months until conclave where we elect our new LTG. And less than a month before Fall Rally South.
We just had our Regional Training Conference last Saturday. (I’m writing this on October 15th.) Although the day clashed with Fall Ball, many people were able to come out and bond with other Key Clubbers.
many amazing workshops that help train us for the next term. I feel so blessed to be able to meet Kristie Poon, the treasurer of the CaliforniaNevada-Hawaii District. (Basically she’s everyone’s boss.) If you guys know me, I’ve always been a big fan of Kristie Poon ever since DCON 2019, and I’m so happy I was able to talk to her at RTC. She’s seriously the sweetest person I know and her love for tea is the funniest thing I’ve seen. Since I was such a big fan of her, I decided to attend ALL of her workshops just so that I can continue and watch her spill tea. Ahaha Thanks to Kristie, I learned so much about being a treasurer. I was able to get more insight on what it means to be a Key Club Treasurer and how to make a 50 page e-portfolio for DCON submission. Yikes

OC FAIR OC JAPAN JAPAN FAIR Lydia Lee | 10 | Historian It was a sunny morning when Kenny (one of the project chairs) came to pick me up to go to OC Japan Fair. After a 20 minute car ride, we arrived at Costa Mesa, the OC Fair Grounds. Many food stalls and vendors scattered around the area was a beautiful sight to see. After we signed in and received shirts, we put our stuff away and I was amazed by the vast amount of Pocky boxes. It was an unlimited supply as they were giving out free Pocky to everyone. I was assigned to the entrance with Tiffany (another historian) and we collected tickets from the people entering. The heat was difficult to bear with so we eventually switched with oth- er volunteers to online ticketing where we sat in the shade and scanned tickets and took note of people who purchased Will Call tickets. The people in charge of OC Japan Fair were very kind to us. They ensured that we weren’t dehydrated due to the immense heat of that day and provided Calpico, water, and Milk Tea drinks. It was a lot of sugar but still tasted amazing. Some of the other volunteers dressed up in traditional Japanese outfits and advertised some of the vendors while others passed out maps and flyers to the people entering. Others sold tickets in the booths while others stood outside and guided people to the entrance.

Overall, it was an enjoyable day and I liked the food I got to eat. Working at online ticketing was much more fun than I expected, and I was able to talk to some volunteers from other schools as well. It was nice to see new freshman come out to the event and I look forward to more events at the OC Fairgrounds in the future. <3
Claire Lee | 10 | Publicist I am in love with all of my exec board, but I really want to talk about our favorite e-girl Jennifer Vo for this month’s article. Jennifer was my first friend I made directly from Key Club. My very first event was Hope Foods Distribution, and she warmly welcomed me into working in the same section as her which really drew me into wanting to know more about Key Club. Shortly after, we became #besties because she always offered to give me rides to events my dad was not able to take me, and through the short car rides, we were both able to open up and learn more about each other. I like to think we’re each other’s motivation, especially because she’s my motivation for almost everything, including Key Club.
the many reasons why Jennifer is different among many. In addition, she is willing to give me advice for Key Club, academics, and other extracurriculars. She has also taught me that time, nor distance, nor age gaps stand in the way of a true friendship. Especially because sophomore and junior years are the hardest years of high school both academically and mentally, it became even more difficult to make time for each other and being in different grades did not help at all. When I thought our friendship was coming to the end, Jennifer proved me wrong by going out of her way to plan multiple hangouts so that we can catch up. She lets me lean into her whenever I am stressed about something and never lets me give up on myself.
She is willing to go out of her way to help me with the best of her abilities She has shaped me into the person I even when she is busy, which is one of am today.
