Hey Sunshines!

W

hen I was a timid freshman starting off Key Club, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Four years later, I am serving as president and left reminiscing in the remaining 29 days of my term.

From serving as publicist in my sophomore year to serving as secretary in my junior year to what I am today, I have come a long way. Being on KC board and having to fulfill responsibilities on a weekly and monthly basis was not an easy feat. Officers have to write event reports for the plethora of events we have each month, have to attend many meetings, write articles each month, and much more. But a general description of what an officer does, does not do justice for the amount of work and effort they put in, which is why I am grateful for all my officers.

Without my board, I would not be able to accomplish what I have thus far and bring the club to the heights we are at today. However, general members are just as important as this small group of leaders in driving our club to success. To all the dedicated, active members who consistently attend general meetings, weekly service events, and Division Council Meetings, they are the reason why the club is growing. These are the many hours during the week that members spend on KC and I am beyond grateful. OAKC would not be as strong as it is without each and every member.

Serving as president was a fun journey to embark on. It was a little difficult at first to understand all the responsibilities to keep this organization afloat, but with each new week, I eased in more and more into this new position. I made sure to be as organized as possible to eliminate potential stress in time management and organization (I mean if you look at my agenda, you will see A LOT of Key Club on it). Organization not only helped me stay on top of my personal duties but also help other officers stay on top of theirs through frequent reminders. I also had to attend three meetings each month: Kiwanis Meeting, Division Leadership Team Meeting, and DCM. In the beginning it seemed tedious to have to spend hours attend meetings but I came to really appreciate them. Through Kiwanis Meetings, I got to interact with the Kiwanians more, who are nice and enjoyable people. They’re very approachable, and I wouldn’t want to miss a chance interacting with them at Kiwanis events such as Pancake Breakfasts and Concert on the Green’s each summer. Through DLT Meetings, I got to bond more with DLT officers and other presidents. I got to know more of the people I worked alongside and also reach out to more people if I ever needed support in anything I did. Lastly, DCM’s, one of my favorite KC events, are always something I look forward to each month. I get to meet with KC people outside of Oxford who I don’t normally get to interact with. With KC being a tough journey, all the people I met along the way have allowed me to enjoy my experiences in this organization.

Today marks the last day for my President’s Corners. In 27, it is… DCON 2019! Sunday morning of DCON weekend will mark the end of the 2018-2019 term. And that’s a wrap! Much love

Hey Key-Clubbers!

To think this is my second to last editor’s note… DCON is only a month away. I can’t wait to be working with the new board but at the same time I can’t just say good bye to our current board so easily. I’m really going to miss all you guys :’( But I hope all the seniors will be successful in their new schools, so good luck to all those seniors reading this. And here are my brief announcements: •

March DCM is on the 23rd this month. Trust me, this is beyond one of the BEST DCMs I’ve been to last year. It’s a joint DCM between D30S, D04N, and D04W. And the best part of the DCM is the color war!!!!

Although it does cost money to participate, it’s just only 3 bucks and it’s to pay for the powder. See division announcements for more info!

The Club

Social is taking place March 30th. We’ll be joining with JFK, Whitney, and Cypress to bond

and to make PB&J sandwiches! :3 And that’s all for this month’s announcements! Stay shining, Suns!

An Introduction Hey key clubbers! My name is Tobi Yao and I will be your Oxford Academy Key Club president for the 20192020 term. As your upcoming club president, there are some things you should get to know about me! I’m a sophomore and the first Key Club event I ever attended was July Beach Boomba before my freshman year. I fell in love with the environment Key Club provided and was shocked how quickly I was able to fit in even though I went without knowing anyone else. I am also part of my school’s varsity soccer team, and it’s a sport I’ve been playing for ten years now. Despite trying to stay active and fit (haha not really), I LOVE food! Just tell me if you ever want to get boba or try out one of those cafes you see on instagram. :)))) Everything’s been moving fast; I only got notice of my election on the first of February. Since then, I’ve gone through two training sessions with Vina, sent out appointed board applications, and I’m already starting to plan banquet. And wow, by the time this newsletter has been sent out, the new board will have been chosen! I’m ready to put all my heart and soul into my work and I can’t wait for this upcoming term!

Don’t be afraid to talk to me or ask me any questions (I want to meet everyone in the club!!!).

very month I sit down to write these articles, I reflect on all the service events I attended th

ast month, Oxford Academy held our annual school servathon. This event occurs every year on campus and different clubs organize service events to give back to our community. Oxford Key Club worked with Culinary Club to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. A couple weeks later, there was another

servathon except it was for our whole division.

We started off making cards for senior homes. Everyone wrote encouraging messages and had fun working together to decorate the cards. Next, we made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, just like our school servathon, except this was on a larger scale. People from both Division 30 South and Division 30 North worked to make sandwiches.

Within only about twenty minutes, the piles of supplies that were originally stacked high on a table disappeared.

We then took a break while we were waiting for lunch and the last service event. It was great to see members interacting with people from the other division, and eve-

Next, we made ribbon bracelets. I had fun teaching other members how to make them because it reminded me of District Convention last year. As we made the bracelets, everyone sang karaoke songs together. It was a great chance to bond with people from my own club and other divisions.

ight, there are over 600 million people on our planet that do not have access to safe, clean drinking water, so they are forced to use contaminated and dangerous water sources for their daily needs. And water-borne diseases kill more people than AIDS, malaria and all world violence, combined; over 80% of all disease in the world is caused by lack of access to clean, safe water. To combat the water crisis, the Thirst Project has provided clean water to over 300K people in 13 different countries all over the world through rais-

ing almost $10 million. Along the way, they’ve educated over 450,000 young students. Each freshwater-well funded by Thirst Project provides 500 people with clean water for life! One of the coolest things about Thirst Project is that 100% of every dollar raised and donated goes directly toward funding water projects, without Thirst Project taking any administration or overhead for operational expenses. So 100% off all the money we raise as Key Clubbers will help provide clean water for those in need! Right now there is a small country in Africa known as Swaziland of about 1.3 million people, and it is the country that has the single highest density HIV/AIDS population in the world. About 1 in every 4 people living here don’t have access to clean water. Currently, about 25% of people in Swaziland rely on contaminated water sources that are shared with animals, for all of their daily needs. As a result, many individuals have contracted life-threatening waterborne diseases, like Cholera and Malaria. However, Key Clubbers want to change this And with The Thirst Project, kids will be able to spend more time in school, to get an education and women who used to have to walk hours every day to fetch contaminated water don’t have to anymore; they can take that time to get jobs and contribute financially to their households. Currently, Division 30 South Key Clubs are fundraising to fund a well in Swaziland that costs $12,000, which means each school in the division needs to raise $900. OAKC has been consistently fundraising through Bake Sales and fundraisers at DCM’s and hopefully with Thirst Project Week, we will be able to exceed our goal. During Thirst Project Week, OAKC and HOSA are hosting a cluster competition for homeroom classes to collect as much donations as possible. The top two clusters who collect the most donations will receive an incentive. This is how OAKC is taking on the Thirst Project, especially with it being a new preferred charity since late November 2018. We hope to continue this charity in future years and continue to build water wells in Swaziland and

other countries.

t was second time watching the Thirst Project come and present to us and every time I watch it, I’m still in awe of how there are over 500 million people in the world that don’t have access to clean water.

We were presented with a different video this time around and it was more personal as it shows how a student like us and make a change and the people personally interviewing those who live without access to clean water.

It is an eye-opening experience and makes everyone realize how lucky we are to have accessible water.

I wish our lunch was longer so we could watch more of the video or see what our guest speaker had to say.

Either way I believe the thirst project is a great campaign for our school and hope that people can follow the footsteps of those who participated because everyone here is capable of making a difference.

ast Saturday, I woke up excited to volunteer at OAKC’s Bake Sale and fundraise for the Thirst Project. I expected it to be just like any other bake sale, where I would enthusiastically promote baked goods and either mope after rejection or happily package baked goods away after successfully selling them. However, this bake sale was unlike any other - we never ended up having it. OAKC was unable to host a bake sale after miscom-

munication and scheduling difficulties, so Brittney and I took all of the supplies to February DCM, where we were successfully able to give out all the baked goods along with merchandise and boba.

February DCM was so much fun. Despite my lack of fitness abilities, I had a great time watching my friends and other Key Clubbers play dodgeball and make pillows. At the end of the DCM, OAKC was unable to sell out for boba, so Tobi came up with a fun game to get rid of the remaining cups. We ended up having Key Clubbers guess which hand the quarter was in - if they guessed correctly, they get a free cup of boba, but if they guessed incorrectly, they had to purchase a cup of boba for $2. Ryan, from Cypress, was actually able to figure out the trick behind the guessing and won two free cups of boba.

Although I did not expect to go to February DCM, I had an amazing experience and look forward to March DCM.

I

t was a beautiful, sunny morning, something that California hadn’t seen in awhile with the series of cloudy, rainy days. I woke up at 9 AM and prepared for the long day: first, a bake sale, then a DCM boba fundraiser, and later the CIF finals basketball game. It was the day to earn big bucks for the Thirst Project.

I was mistaken, for luck is not on my side. I drove a total of 30 minutes and 20 miles from my home to the Ralphs

located in Lakewood. I was told this location raised a lot of money from bake sales and was quite excited to sell the many delicious baked goods that my wonderful board members cooked up the previous day. I arrived at Ralphs and immediately made my way to the store to find the manager and inform him that I was there. On my way in, I was asked by a little girl, probably three fourths of my height, “Hi! Would you like to buy some Girl Scout cookies?”

I said no thank you and continued on my way, slightly confused as to why they were selling today, but I wasn’t that concerned because it wouldn’t be the first time we had a bake sale at the same time as another organization. I finally found the manager after pacing around a bit, and I told him that I was here from Oxford Academy Key Club for the bake sale, and was promptly told, “Oh! I’m so sorry, I’m sure you got permission from the manager and everything but you see, the Girl Scouts got permission from corporate, and they’re only here for a short part of the year, and they’re just so small and adorable! So is it okay if you guys had your bake sale another day?”

I smiled through the sadness and assured him that it was okay. I walked with my head high back to the outside world and ran in Amber, telling her of what happened. We immediately started calling different supermarkets if we could have a last minute bake sale and were unfortunately, and tragically, turned down each time. Finally, we laid our phones to rest and brought all of our baked goods to the DCM, which we gave out to those who bought our boba and merch or wanted to make a charitable donation.

Although it was a tragic day for Oxford Academy Key Club and their bake sale, all was not lost. Sure, we didn’t make all of the big bucks we thought we’d make on this fine February day, but we did make some money, and that is better than nothing.
