What’s Poppin Suns! I’m back with the another newsletter, the second one, for this term! If you don’t remember me from the last newsletter, or don’t know me, my name is Christina Nguyen and I have the honor of serving as my home club’s Bulletin Editor and the division’s Executive Assistant. Feel free to contact me with any questions or say hi when you see me :) In all honesty, my love for making newsletters hasn’t grown yet. My first newsletter was a tough obstacle and besides bugging my IP IP Bulletin Editor multiple times with a thousand questions, I still had no clue with what I was doing. Making a newsletter is definitely a long trial and error process that I’m still getting the hang of. Hopefully I’ll be a pro by the end of this, but it’s highly unlikely. Apart from my newsletter nonsense, summer has officially started! Hopefully all of you are enjoying yourselves and relaxing (in quarantine, of course). I’ll be creating merch designs and attending June DCM, which probably already happened by the time this newsletter is released. Not completely sure when we’ll be able to have inperson events or actual DCMs again, but like we said last month, let’s take advantage of what we’ve got! Keep working hard suns! SUN-cerely,
Christina Nguyen Christina Nguyen OAKC Bulletin Editor
Hello again, all! As we reach the end of our first quarter, we come into what would usually encompass the fundraising season for our Key Club. Summer would be a perfect opportunity to have a bake sale or a quick food sale at a DCM. No school, no homework and plenty of time to bake! While we won’t get these kinds of moments this time, it’s still important to know what the purpose of such fundraisers are for: preferred charities. March of Dimes focuses on research and education on birth defects. United Nations International Children’s Emergency Funds delivers emergency relief and immunizations to save the lives of children in critical medical conditions. Children’s Miracle Network works with hospital to provide special equipment and training to its workers. The Pediatric Program serves to prevent deaths from traumatic accidents on children. It’s a little difficult to remember each one, but they all promote caring, our way of life! Here’s an acronym to remember them: MUCP = Must Use Cool Pronouns, also promoting the use of positive words in an atmosphere of Safekey language. Anyways, this barely touches surface of these charities, but it’s truly fascinating how a simple high school club can contribute to thousands of lives being saved across the world. Hopefully this educates and encourages you on your Key Club journeys!

A NEW WAY TO SERVE Leann Vo | 10 | Historian
Volunteering has become more difficult than it has ever been before. Leaving our homes and interacting with others is not really an option for Key Club members at the moment due to concerns regarding the current global pandemic. Our club’s project chairs and the division was still able to find ways for us to volunteer while staying safe and practicing social distancing. My favorite event of the month was the FreeRice service project where members got the chance to volunteer through a screen. The concept of the app is to answer questions from different categories such as the English vocabulary, the multiplication tables, different languages, etc for sponsors to donate the cash equivalent of 10 grains of rice to the World Food Programme, who will use it to save lives. This was a great way for members to gain hours since they are feeding many people around the world who are struggling which is very crucial, especially in hard times like these. The last week of May was our Division Service Week where members could earn hours depending on the time it takes for them to complete an activity. Personally, Mental Health Monday has been my favorite day of the week so far because of the message it spreads. Being stuck at home is never fun and may often lead to feelings of loneliness or intense boredom which is why taking care of your mental health should always be a priority. For the first time in a while, I sat down at my desk, pulled out my markers and began to draw. After completing my drawing, it gave me the chance to reflect on how important selfcare is and why I needed to continue doing it more often. Since summer has finally started, many students, including myself, are beginning to unwind a little bit and focus on taking better care of themselves than their grades.

Starting May 5th to May 17th, Oxford Academy Key Club held 2 service projects for members to participate in, Charity Miles in which members would hold their phones while they run in order to raise money, and Free Rice where members would take quizzes to donate rice to poor families. Because of the COVID19 outbreak, we weren’t able to have as many inperson events except one for Kiwanis. Charity Miles was an app that donated 25 cents per mile than someone ran. Their sponsors would pay and donate to charity, while the participants would just have to run or walk. I found this app very interesting and fun, so I decided that I would chair for this service project. Immediately once the event was posted, I ran 3 miles each day and reached the 12 mile limit. I really liked this event because of how we were able to exercise for our health, at the same time as donating to charity! It was great to be able to donate money through running, as well as see so many Key Club members run, including those who haven’t been as active as others. From my calculations, from this event we have raised around 30 dollars, which seems like a little amount but actually means a lot of charity. Free Rice was also a really fun event that we had, in which for every question a sponsor would donate money to buy rice. Answering the questions, they were fairly easy to answer, and allowed us to help the community. These service projects were really fun to participate in, and I was very surprised at how many members participated and how many hours we have served in just 2 events. I hope even more members participate in our online events, because it would help the community a lot!

All of our lives were impacted in different ways as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. For Key Club as a whole, all our service events and DCM’s had to switch to online means. By this point, I’ve gotten adjusted to the various different virtual service events options. It’s really opened my eyes to just how easy it is to serve others through the technology we have access to. And with the start of summer, there is certainly no excuse to not participate in these convenient service projects. For example, through the Freerice app, I was amazed at just how simple it was to contribute to important issues such as world hunger. Answering simple quiz questions allowed me to raise rice grains to feed those in need. One downside to virtual service events is that we don’t get to directly interact or see our impact on those we help. For example, I definitely miss being able to converse with the families who I met through HOPE Food Distribution. However, I’m incredibly proud of our club, and D30S as a whole, for being able to still uphold our mission statement despite the obstacles and difficult circumstances. I hope that we’ll continue to get creative with these service project options (shoutout to our amazing project chairs, keep up the great work!) and that the simplicity of these projects will attract the interest of more and more members. I’m so proud of how strong we’re kicking off this term, and I can’t wait to see just how well the rest of the term goes.

Over the past couple of months, our board has been working extremely hard in order to adjust to the stay home order issued by the state. This order has restricted our access to going outside and even the admin has not cancelled the events that were planned to be held months ago. However, we need to stay strong! We have to work even harder to accommodate for this and I’m so thankful for such competent project chairs leading the events with Timmy and Kenny backing them up all the time. I have had to send a lot more emails without following my weekly Wednesday schedule, but it’s not like I have anything better to do! I miss going outside and helping at 5Ks and HOPE Food Distribution. The future is so ambiguous and unclear, it’s sort of scary. However, the online service events we do have are rather enjoyable. I loved writing letters to nursing homes last month and the FreeRice service project this month. Answering questions to earn grains of rice is actually pretty fun! It helped me challenge my brain while it was in off mode while at home. I look forward to the future events that our project chairs plan! Although it is extremely important to stay safe at home, I really wish I could return to my original schedule of attending events. However, I must admit, I do not miss waking up at 6:30am every other Saturday to attend service events. Overall, the first quarter will end in a bit more than a month and time is really just flying by. It’s exciting to anticipate what the future holds in store for me and the rest of Oxford Academy Key Club.

The pandemic affected the lives of every individual with no doubt, especially the lives of us, Key Clubbers. Our main job is to provide opportunities for our fellow members to volunteer and give back to the community. April was definitely a difficult month to adjust to this new life, but honestly all we needed was time. In just one month, we were able to get so many more participants that continue to stay active, and we have numbers to prove this. All I have is to say that I am so so proud of where we are at right now, and we are only going to go up from here. As quarantine slowly lifts, it may take awhile to go back to the way things were before the chaos, but I learned that we can tackle any obstacle coming our way. Any experience is experience, and everything happens for a reason. Continue shining, suns :)

Service has not been easy this month, as Key Club faces challenges in the midst of the COVID-19 epidemic among everything else. With the order to stay at home and the prohibition of public gatherings, we as Key Clubbers turn to alternative approaches and continue to remain resourceful. We find ways to serve the community and raise funds from within the confinements of our own homes. And through that, the service goes on. As a shining example of our division’s efforts, the Division Service Week was an illustrious success. With the opportunity to participate in daily activities and receive hours, we saw a rise in service and community outreach. The activities included creating videos aimed towards promoting mental health, writing thank you cards for teachers and school faculty members, and even recording healthy exercises to support a cause through charity apps. Because of the restrictions as a result of being separated during lockdown, we saw a new system in place for logging hours during the

service week: participating members would self-report their hours by emailing proof to their respective project chairs. Such a system places honesty and trust on fellow Key Clubbers to do the right thing, rather than abusing it to their advantages. It is a great way to highlight the Key Club core value of character building, both through the honor system and the service activities. I personally enjoyed participating in the Division Service Week, as I was able to see the creativity of my friends and other Key Clubbers shine. On Food Bank Friday, we helped raise money for food banks by playing trivia games that awarded one bean for every right answer. I challenged myself to get to 500 beans, but sadly I fell short at 492 beans. My favorite activity was Mental Health Monday, which allowed for everyone to be creative and post stress-relieving activities on their social media stories. I also learned how to play Minecraft guitar music for that day, which was both fun and surprisingly stress-relieving. Truly, Minecraft solves everything.

This article is amazing because I completely rewrote it out of straight fatigue. The Division Service Week was interesting in terms of how our Division has been able to rebound for service hours. I have extreme faith in our club, acknowledging the efforts of our members in continuing to serve despite circumstances. I commend those who have taken the time to support our service events, but moreso for taking advantage of the Division’s opportunities. This service week is notable to me in that we are still able to gather hours despite not being able to meet in physical locations, doing the hard and dirty work. Those these hours may seem less impactful or meaningful, it is important to recognize that service, at the end of the day, is still service. The honors system is another issue I would like to address. As much as I hope for the best in terms of integrity of hours, I know that the best way to ensure this is to place emphasis on the types of events we host. With reopening occurring as we speak through steps of phases, I under-
stand we may be approaching a more manageable state soon. However, it is to my belief that this new normal in which we live in currently will be the reality in which we live in for the time being. It is imperative that our service adaptations have been successful, though not to the scale at which we once perceived. All I can ask and hope for is continuous service, continuous effort, and continuous action. I’m honestly impressed by how far we’ve been able to adapt and overcome, but of course, the many new issues raised with how we serve are interesting to ponder about.

Going from attending a DCM to planning one, was definitely quite different. In certain aspects, I immediately missed the feeling of attending a DCM with no worries because now, not only do I have to contribute to planning it, but make sure that it’s executed correctly as well. The presentation didn’t go as well as I thought, but it might be that it's because it didn’t go as I planned. Along with that, I know that members don’t enjoy “learning” at our DCMs, but the advisors recommend it, so please bear with us :// As much as I appreciate the criticism, it does hurt to hear when members don’t enjoy what we plan. Although a DCM is only 1-2 hours of one’s life every month, it takes a whole lot of time and thinking to piece together. On top of that, I had to complete my first newsletter, but I struggled... by a lot. I’ll be honest, I’m not a tech person. Actually, I’m the complete opposite and born with 0% knowledge in that area. But, I don't completely understand how I managed to lose all my work, when I was almost done :,) Despite having to start over, I managed to not throw my laptop to the other side of the Pacific Ocean, so that’s good.
MAY DC

On May 30th, the Division 30 South May DCM was held on YouTube live. It was the second online division event this term, and it has still been a little hard to adjust to having all events go virtual. However, all the events so far have been planned pretty well and there were barely any issues! During the May DCM, we first went over the DCM stuff, like updates and announcements, on YouTube live. I got Officer of the Month and OAKC got 4th Shining Club of the Month! Yay! Then, after the DCM was over, we moved on to a Google Meets Call, so the different schools split up. Oxford was with Anaheim and Kennedy. We learned about Key Club’s preferred charities, and I actually learned a lot more about each of the charities, like when the organizations were established and how widespread their contributions are. After learning about the preferred charities through a slideshow, we played a fun Kahoot! It wasn’t only about the preferred charities, but also a bunch of other trivia about our division and Key Club in general. Some of the questions were about when Key Club was founded, and some asked about who held certain positions in the club. It was pretty interesting and I unexpectedly learned a lot about Key Club just from the Kahoot! Overall, although the May DCM was only about an hour long, it was really memorable because it’s one of the first virtual DCMs I’ve attended and the activities were very fun and engaging!
Ryan Dang | 11 | Historian
Similarly with every month, Key Club held their DCM called Charity Trivia on May 30th, 2020. Just like in past DCMs the Division 30 South Key Club community was able to come together and have time to bond with each other. I think DCMs are especially important because it helps everyone meet up with old friends. This is especially important as there’s all sorts of chaos running rampant in the world and even one’s mind. The May DCM was able to help me relax and hang out with people I enjoy being with while also informing me of important updates such as goals for PTP funds as well as the division’s goals for the amount of hours served. The DCM started out reviewing the events of the past month like the April DCM which allowed people to interact with each other on Skribbl.io. There was also the discussion of the winner of the shirt design as well as updates on the new division leadership team. We also discussed the fundraisers we had going on during the month of April such as eliminate week which is a project held by Kiwanis International as well as UNICEF to try and eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Additionally, there was a service week held last week to try and help everyone gain more hours while also having fun doing it. During the week, students had the opportunity to earn hours by doing activities such as recording themselves doing their favorite hobby, creating artwork or music videos, helping with charity, creating posters to show thanks to faculty members, and helping raise money for food banks. The service week was really fun and it was interesting to see what people posted on their Instagram stories. After touching bases on the service week, Jennifer moved on to discussing new business like the officer training conference as well as next month’s DCM in July. She also gave us an update on the new division goals and how far along we were in achieving them. The MNT fundraiser was looking as a huge success as at the moment, Key Clubbers had raised $541 of the $600 goal. It was also pretty amusing to see that Jennifer would be changing her Instagram user to “toejenie.” Jennifer also went over the new goals that were set by CNH for the new term. They were hoping for $260,000 to be raised for PTP, 900,000 service hours , as well as 38,000 dues paid members. By achieving the number of deus paid members, it would mean that there was an increase of 10 percent total members in Key Club from last year to this year. Maxime, who is the terms member recognition chair, also announced and recognized those in the club who have been doing an outstanding job. An example would be the officer of the month, which was won by our one and only Tiffany Ong! Continuing on with recognitions Jennifer also announced the shining clubs of the month and after that, we transitioned into Kahoot to have some fun with each other. The trivia was really interactive as well as very educational on the topics of the Division 30 South. I had a really great time during the Kahoot and congratulations to Sofia Gange for winning first in it! Overall, the DCM was a really stress relieving time as I was able to talk and have fun with my friends.

Timmy Bui | 12 | President Charity Miles is an App that translates the steps you walk into money donated to a charity of your choice. Honestly, it’s one of the most straightforward and simple projects out there, but it’s still one of my favorites. It definitely encouraged me to go outside more often. Sometimes, I spend up to 60 minutes a day walking aimlessly outside, exploring my streets, receiving some fresh air, and getting my tan back. The app coincidentally can support preferred charities of Key Club such as UNICEF and March for Dimes, so I’m all for it. Sure, it may be controversial that I personally somehow log in twice the amount of miles that I actually set out to walk. Still, I’ll be sure to continue this project as well as using the app in my own time to benefit both my health and the community.
Devanshi Kothari | 10 | Historian
Participating in a service event where you run, walk, or bike to earn money for charity was a fun initiative and super interesting! After downloading the app, Charity Miles, I chose the charity March of Dimes because I had heard about this charity through Key Club and I decided it would be best for this service event. Then whenever I had the time or was out for a run, I turned on the app and it recorded my exercise, or movement whether it was running, biking or a simple walk. This service event helped me get out of the house and get moving during this quarantine. I really enjoyed this service event and I am excited to do it again. The app itself is super interesting with cool articles to read and discover different charities. Forcing myself to exercise, this service event helped me get moving since before this I kept putting off exercising. Additionally, I was able to get some good out of my exercising by helping fundraise and donate to March of Dimes. It was truly a rewarding experience and I am glad that this entire service event assisted me in donating for a cause and exercising while being pent up in my house. Another thing I enjoyed about this entire service event and the app was that I did not have to do all the exercise at once. I could take breaks and just stop the workout, so it was easier for me to reach my goal of12 miles for 6 volunteer hours. I thoroughly enjoyed this event and I hope we can do even more fun events that turn my boredom into productivity!

SUMMER SOCIAL| 15
SUMMER SOCIAL Kenny Le | 12 | Vice President
John F. Kennedy. A city in central England. The Latinization of the Greek κυπάρισσος. What do these all have in common?? They are all the namesakes of the schools who participated in our Division’s first social! Planning this social took a lot more effort than I expected. To be frank, online socials are a lot harder to navigate than one would imagine. We ran into problems Every. Single. step of the way. Since this is the first social any of us had ever planned, we did not know how to properly fill in the information for the ERF, causing many headaches. Furthermore, the platform to use for the social was up to debate too. We were originally going to only have two schools do the social on Instagram live, then it turned into all three, then it went from Instagram Live to Google Meets after Google Meets became free. What a mess! After having to create an interest form, find chaperones, send chaperones, create activities, create a Kahoot, and 20 other things that we had to do because of the fact that it was an online social, we were finally ready to go. For what It’s worth, in my opinion, considering the fact that the social was online, I would consider it a success! Honestly, just having a social during this pandemic, to me, is a great success. However, having more than 50 members attend, having little to no technology problems as the social went along, and having members tell me how much fun they had makes me happy. Obviously, there were a lot of variables that we could not control. We really tried our best to form groups that would mesh well. However, considering the fact that we didn’t know each other’s members, didn’t know how many people were comfortable talking, and the fact that psychologically online meetings are a lot more awkward than in real life meetings, keeping everybody happy was hard. But, maybe I’m biased, I really feel like this social worked out amazingly.
