KEY CLUB BOYS,,, Hi! In all honesty, I don’t really have a good way with words, but I just wanted to say how hard-working and influential these people are. Actually, I’m not completely sure if I’m even allowed to add this stuff in my newsletter, but I’ll just take it out if Timmy makes me. Of course, these individuals don’t represent all the Key Club Boys, but if they did, then all Key Club Boys would have my full respect. In other words,,, Timmy, Kenny, Lance, Giang, Kenneth, and Ryan are very cool. Alright, I wanted to keep my message short, so I should probably end my message here before it gets too cringey. Ok, bye now.
Hi, suns! Hopefully your summers have been fine so far. There’ve been many missed summer opportunities due to COVID-19, but don’t lose hope for the future! Where there’s rain, there’s a rainbow. We still have many good plans for the future, so don’t lose sight of our club’s purpose! And on that note, let’s learn about the ‘objects of Key Club International.’ This is a classic phrase, a proverb even, ingrained into the minds of Key Clubbers thanks to the Key Club pledge. Have you actually stopped to consider what these objectives are, though? To prepare for useful citizenship. To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship. To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which will make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill. These are just a select few of the essential traits that Key Club hopes to build in us. It’s not my job to lead you forever. It’s my job to prepare your leadership for the world in front of us. Hopefully, you’ll be as ready to take on this challenge as I once was!

Hi! (again) Another month, another newsletter, as always. If you read my message on the page before, then thank you!! And if you’re reading this too, thank you!! Actually, I’m not completely sure why this newsletter took me so long, so I apologize for the long wait, but I highly doubt anyone really cares. Out of all the newsletter that I’ve made so far, I would say this one is one of my favorites, if not my favorite. I think that it looks more put together and that I didn’t just smack pictures and articles onto a page and called it a day. As we close off July, I hope that you all had many restful days and are filled with enough energy to start the new school year!! As the virtual learning starts again, let’s manage our time and workload well. As we build up our club and the incoming freshman start piling in, I can’t wait to see how much our club will thrive during the school year, even if quarantine is still occurring. Let’s continue working hard and make everyone proud!! Love you to the sun and back,

Quarantine. I hate that word with a burning passion. Gone were the many tried-and-true tenured plans of raising money during our busiest and most opportunistic fundraising season. No more bake sales, no more boba sales, no more division roller-skating. Basically, I was jobless. March and April passed by with a veiled panic, the unnerve of my lack of production slowly etching at the back of my mind. “But there was nothing that could be realistically done! We have no idea what we are doing!” The funerals for my DCM sales and Eliminate Week fundraisers were overshadowed by a greater fear of the uncertain reality which we were now dealt with. May was my tipping point; although other treasurers continued to suggest and research, I was finally able to absorb the reality that a lack of a centralized collection system coupled with complete faith in the honors system and social media marketing combined to from the greatest barrier to our fundraising efforts. Still, no treasurer had anything. My personal philosophy in fundraising rests on the pillars of rationalism, maximum output, and mindfulness of my members. At this point, though it would seem to be the time to throw the dice and take that risk, I still felt uncomfortable throwing in my cards. If you told me June would introduce even more detractors from our goal, I would have cried on the spot. However, I had enough of waiting. I continued telling myself all I needed, and all my club needed, is one push of momentum, one glowing sign of hope. That beacon never came because I had to make it on my own. Oxford’s first official fundraiser of the 2020-21 term was the Surplus Spirit Gear Fundraiser, and I am overwhelmingly happy for its success despite how late it was. The biggest obstacle presented was finding a secure and trustworthy way to pitch the sale. For this, I offered to deliver orders directly following strict sanitation and CDC guidelines, showing our ability to adapt and our persistence in fundraising for our preferred charities. 100% of donations will go towards the Pediatric Trauma Program, which is a Kiwanis CNH District initiative to reduce the amount of preventable injury and death by accidental occurrences, such as falling off one’s bike. To do this, all money raised will be allocated for educational programs, safety supplies, and support for children who have experienced trauma in partnership with local hospitals. The near future shows promise due to the reopening of the state; however, we must still be prepared for the worst. I am proud of my club’s resilience and support, so regarding our goals, I have a strong belief that we will overcome. Being able to nearly achieve 1/3 of my revised PTP goal through one fundraiser gives me the energy and motivation I need to continue to push our boundaries and truly innovate in our most desperate times. I know these efforts will not be mine alone, and so, I am immensely thankful to my club board and members for their faith in me. Fundraising under quarantine has proven to be our greatest challenge, but with renewed hope, we now understand that it is not impossible.

Despite the social restrictions in place due to the epidemic and quarantine, I feel that Oxford Academy Key Club has accomplished many things in the first quarter of this term. Perhaps I would go as far as to say that we accomplished even more than we had under normal circumstances, even without scaling relatively. It is truly incredible to see all the work that my fellow board members have been able to put out. My biggest project so far has been to build the OAKC website for this term, starting from scratch. I decided to be a little ambitious because of the circumstances laid upon me and the club: coping with the repercussions of the epidemic, relying on technology to move things forward, and counting down my last and final term in OAKC. That, and because I had some handy experience from my CS pathway. I didn’t initially apply to serve as an officer of OAKC board, but I decided to fill a role as technology chair when unforeseen circumstances came up. It wasn’t something I could have anticipated or expected, but nonetheless, I was determined not to be completely unprepared. By pursuing this project as OAKC’s technology chair, I’ve learned to pull from a lot of resources to make it possible: using GitHub to host the website for free, applying for the free student developer pack to get a free domain and SSL certification, pulling up those YouTube tutorials and source codes to get my HTML knowledge in shape. A lot of boring stuff really, but I was quite amazed at all the free resources at my disposal, and it presented me with many new opportunities to take my Key Club project to the next level. It’s not just handy for Key Club either, as this project has taught me many things that I can and will use in the future. Overall, there are a lot of exciting and cool things happening with my role as technology chair. Hopefully, I can keep up the momentum and in the meantime, keep an eye out for the new OAKC website as it will be coming up very soon!

This month, a service project that I had a lot of fun with Smile Project. First of all, the coloring was super therap ing. I went to the website and I chose the coloring page After printing them out, I brought my crayons and color used to color. This event wasn’t that big of a deal. Less than 30 volunteers, adults and students combined, were present in total. The event went by slowly. It only lasted for 2 hours. We were just delivering books. Our club only produced 6 total hours of service on this day. Not a big deal, right? Well, that’s where I believe that the numbers don’t tell the whole story. Sure, it was a small and minor event, but for once, I was able to attend an event in person! I was surrounded by friends, new and seasoned, young and old. We talked about many nuances of life. For this brief moment, in the midst of the chaos that quarantine was, I felt like life was bright and joyful again. It was a bit of hope that I needed. This was truly something I could take from this day. After all, the club runs on motivation and morale. Anyways, we were able to deliver the tools of education, books, to so many families! Now, is that a big deal or what?!

On May 31, OAKC had a social event with Cypress High School & Kennedy High School. We were able o bond with other Key Club members, through games and a service project. The social was held on Google Meets, and we were able to see many different people from different schools attend the meetng, even upcoming 9th graders. The social was organized by Cypress’ spirit chairs as well as other oficers from the schools. First, all the participants met up into one Google Meet, where everyone got into the call and we played a Kahoot. The Kahoot was very strange and interesting, since we were able to see the baby pictures of many DLT members. After our Kahoot was finished, the participants separated into breakout rooms hat were assigned before the social. I went into a room with 2 fellow Oxford students, Gianna & Brandon. There, we started playing Skribblio, a game similar to Pictionary. We were able to bond through alking and drawing, and had lots of fun. After playing a game of Skribblio, my room started working on the service project for the social, which was to create thank you cards to essential workers and to ship them. I was able to create multiple cards to send to these hardworking essential workers! Finishing the service project, I joined another oom and we played more games of Skribblio. In the end, the social allowed me and other members to bond with each other, outside of just OAKC. I met some new people, and I encourage more of you to attend the socials!! Although the school year has ended and the quarantine regulations, I still recommend and hope that all of you stay spirited and continue to volunteer at in-person as well as online events. Participate in socials as well as attend online DCMS. Take this time that you have at the comfort of your home to serve the community. Welcome the upcoming 9th graders into the club, and interest them in different events so that they can serve Key Club for their years in high school.

Before everyone was required to stay indoors, I enjoyed participating in after school sports. Joining the track team was really enjoyable as I was able to experience what it was like to sort of be part of a team as well as keep my body in good shape. Unfortunately with Covid resulting in a lockdown, after school sports were only a distant memory. This made it a lot harder to motivate myself to get up and stay active as I was alone doing it and there was no one I could interact with. Online PE homework was able to keep me in check for a few weeks, but after school ended my level physical activity went down dramatically. Fortunately for me, Key Club helped motivate me to become a lot more active with their new online service event called Charity Miles. This app allowed me not only to stay active but I could also donate money to charity as well as gain service hours depending on the amount of miles that I spent walking, biking, or running. Charity Miles allowed me to relive what it was like to be outside in the world instead of staying inside the entire day. It was really refreshing to have something completely new to do in my day as this service event definitely motivated me to get up and exercise.
