EDITOR’S LETTER! Hi BUSY SUNS, Welcome to this month’s July newsletter! I hope you guys have been enjoying your summer and most recently, as well as your Independence Day. I know I have! Watching all the pretty fireworks, or as I’d like to call it “POWPOW,” spending time with my friends/family, and just enjoying some fun in the sun was what I needed. Happy Belated Fourth! (Hope you all were safe!)

Anyways, with all these activities taking up my time, I’ve still have to make sure I’ve left room for Key Club and sadly, summer homework. (Make sure you start on yours too!) In this month’s newsletter, you will find past events such as Concert of the Green and St. I Festivals.

ON CONCERT 8
Summer. The time of year when everyone’s happy, there’s music playing everywhere, and people are serving delicious hamburgers and hot dogs. There’s only one service event that could handle all of this goodness: Concert on the Green. There, Key Club volunteers had a great time working with our fellow Kiwanians to serve everyone at the concert. It was a great event, giving the volunteers there ample time to mingle and have fun. The best part, however, was the fact that we got a free meal for volunteering there. It’s pretty much dinner and a show. What better way to serve the community that to be rewarded for it with a big, juicy hamburger? I mean I’m not saying that volunteering is all about the rewards, but a free burger is a pretty good incentive. The best part is, Concert on the Green is basically a weekly event throughout the summer! Why volunteer at an event once when you have the opportunity to do it throughout the whole summer? The event is fun because you get to talk to the people of Kiwanis there, and it’s a great experience because they’re all so friendly and knowledgeable. So if you have the time this summer, you should definitely check out Concert on the Green! Keep on shining Suns!

To me, the Concert on the Green is comparable to a groundhog on Groundhog’s Day. The series, much like the groundhog, is an indicator of a new season: volunteering season. The first Concert of the Green series of the new summer, meant late night volunteering, with bright lights and dark skies. It meant hot days and cool nights spent with your community, repaying what raised you and enjoying the bond that a tight-knit group shares. It meant volunteering with other members of the community, all of which were dedicated to the same purpose as yours. It meant that I was going to fall in love with Key Club all over again. I was going to fall in love with the community, the volunteers, the Saturday nights dedicated towards helping those you care about. Despite having never met most of these people, I felt as though I had an obligation to give back to these people. This is because, despite having never personally met these people, these people played an integral role in my growth as both a Key Clubber, and as a person.

The ending of the school year marked the rebirth of two things: my social life and the Concert on the Green series hosted by Kiwanis. Here, Key Clubbers whose home clubs were located in Cypress. Volunteers from Kennedy, Cypress, and Oxford all served at this event with their Kiwanis advisors. This Concert on the Green was especially significant, as it was the first of the year.

When I first entered the fiesta at 3:00 on Saturday June 27, the first thing I saw was the ride Kamekazi, which towered above me. Just looking at the ride, which swung passengers in a circle and hung them upside down, made me feel queasy. What a great way to set the tone of the event. At every volunteer event I attend, I learn something new. Whether it be a new life skill, a new outlook on life or a group of people, or a new side of a fellow member I never recognized before. However, the nausea I entered the fiesta with made me fear what was in store for me this event. To my relief, this initial feeling I had was incorrect. From 3-5pm, I worked at a game booth with other Oxford Academy Key Club members and with our LTG. During this time, I enjoyed myself as we shared laughs and as we took silly photos with my camera. In addition, it was cute to see little children playing the game, which involved shooting down targets with a toy crossbow. Most of them knelt down, as they squinted at their target and stuck the tips of their tongues out. A little boy in particular warmed my heart as he hugged and skipped away with his prize. The highlight of the event, though, was when I worked the funnel cake stand from 5-10pm. Once I walked into the food booths area, I was immediately pulled to the funnel cake stand by the strong aroma of freshly made pastries. Lucky for me, I got a job transporting the cakes from the cooks to the volunteers who add toppings. Sometimes, I balanced three or four cakes at a time on my slender arms, which fulfilled my silly childhood dream of being a waitress. Because I was fulfilling a long forgotten dream I had, I was obviously having the time of my life, while spending bonding with fellow Key Clubbers. Later, when John Hoang had to leave, I was promoted to toppings. Again, I found myself achieving another childhood dream. For most of my childhood, I wanted to be a chef just like Spongebob Squarepants—which was very impractical because I set things on fire. However, I was able to hand this job because I simply sprinkled gigantic loads of sugar onto fluffy, freshly made funnel cakes. After the funnel cake resembled fields sprinkled with patches of snow, I added succulent strawberries, cherries, boysenberries, or apples on top—like cherries atop an ice cream sundae. Once it passed my test of perfection, I served the customer with a smile. This event, in particular, will always hold a special place in my heart because I fulfilled so many childhood dreams I never realized I still had. This event not only made me happy but it also helped me to deliver my smile to others.

ONE LAST TIME At Officer Training Conference this year, I reflected on my experiences within Key Club. This would be my third and final Officer Training Conference that I would ever attend in my high school Key Club career. At Officer Training Conference, I learned tidbits and nuances about my position that will definitely benefit my goals for this final year of service. For me, however, this wasn’t my final takeaway from the entire ordeal.
IN GOOD HANDS Looking back on it, however, I can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that younger officers and new board members from each club across Region 3 can lead their own respective clubs to new heights.

This year’s OTC was, as my last Officer Training Conference during my time in Key Club, was very nostalgic. 43years ago, I remember I had no idea what to expect at OTC and I was blown away at the sheer amount of Key Clubbers that were in attendance. There, I attended my first Editors workshop and learned about, for the first time, the wonders that was Graphic Standards. From then on, I was motivated to do a better job as Bulletin Editor not only for myself but also my club as it had been lacking in previous years. That all culminated into winning Distinguished at the end of the year which was certainly rewarding. The next year, at OTC 2014, I was a secretary learning about things that Nicolas had already taught me in the first year. Now, this year, at OTC I attended the Presidents workshop and the fundraising workshop. Though I was surprised that there were only two workshops compared to the usual three, I felt that it was better so that we could focus more on the workshop’s content. In the President’s workshop, we used up all the time to talk about our duties and responsibilities to the club. I realized that, as I moved up in the leadership ladder, the workshops got less and less specific because the job required not a checklist or a person who could do anything if asked, but because higher up positions required you to be more dynamic. More innovative. As President, after OTC, I hope that I will be able to lead the club to greater heights and become more dynamic for future years and I have no doubt that the legacy will carry on past my term.
