Even though we have two months before school starts again at the end of August, it's going to pass by quickly and before you know it, you're going to be doing homework again! So before you spend your days trying to complete your summer homework, try to complete some of the things below: - Volunteer at one Concert on the Green with our sponsoring Kiwanis Club of Cypress -Be at a beach bonfire with your friends -Start and finish a season of a TV show -Do something active like running or swimming - Meet someone new Remember: Either you run the day, or the day runs you. Editor’s Letter!
Hey Y’all! It’s your bulletin Editor again, John Hoang! I’m back again for this month’s newsletter! ^_^ Happy Belated 4th of July everyone! Last month we had so many events such as DCMs, Officer Training Conferences, and volunteer events! Make sure to read this newsletter to see what you missed out on and be sure to stay connected to Key Club!
Since it’s a new month that means there should always be something exciting! Did you guys know that this month had Anime Expo and our very own ICON? Woah! This is a month of adventure and the only way to make sure that there is still an adventure for you all is to keep on volunteering. Shine On Key Clubbers!

“We’re key club! We wanna wash your car for you!” Although our club didn’t have a cute or catchy jingle this year compared to years before, our little rhyme from last year was constantly on my mind, and I sang it multiple times. This year’s car wash was very different for me, and something I was much more proud of. This year, as the treasurer, the car wash was my “baby” because not only was I in charge of it, but it was also my first major fundraiser of the term. Being in charge of planning out all the details and making sure everything would run smoothly was a lot harder than everyone made it out to be. Not only was getting the supplies stressful, but even picking out a date was a challenge because of the conflict with the SATs. However, on the 7th of June, the sun rose behind clouds, and key clubbers woke up early to prepare to wash cars. Although most would think sunny weather is ideal for a car wash, the cloudy weather was perfect. With smiles on their faces our key clubbers worked hard. They had an effective system going, with five stations—pay, hose down the car, soap the car, wash the soap off, and then dry! There was even an advertising crew that walked down the streets holding signs. Most of the volunteers, however, worked on soaping the car and drying it off. The key clubbers diligently made sure to wash every nook and cranny on the car’s surface. It may sound tiring, but it was also lots of fun (and the occasional playing around during breaks helped!). At the end of the drying, we asked for donations for the Eliminate project. Many were generous in their donations; there was one woman who paid double the car wash price because her car was so big! Not only did the drivers have a sparkling car afterwards, but they also helped save a life. The car wash helped make a typical Saturday into one full of soap, water, and fun, and definitely made it better than taking the SATs. Every car drove out shiny and sparkly, which made the washers proud. Oxford’s first major fundraiser was a huge success and not only were we able to meet out goal of making $300, but we saved countless lives through donations!

St Irenaeus Festival

Living in Anaheim, I had no idea what St. I was or even knew they had an annual festival. Even so when I found out it was a School/Church Parking Lot Festival, I didn’t expect actually rides. Arriving around 12a.m at St. I was the easiest part of the whole event because as soon as I got there I got lost in all the booths and the people. It wasn’t anything I was expecting, for starters the parking lot was huge and they had rides so many booths. It looked like an actual fair. When I finally found the lady who put volunteers to work I was so happy to see so many volunteers. I had never chaired an event with so many volunteers. It felt pretty cool. The lady in charged told us to go out and hunt for booths that need help. All ten volunteers eventually split up into groups of 3 or 4 and found a booth to run. I go a booth that seemed pretty easy but was really challenging when you actually tried the game. When kids lost it was so sad, or even seeing them loss up to $10 for a cheap prize, but when kids won. It was so amazing how happy they turned. They would jump up and down screaming showing off their victory. Sometimes it would take a couple of hours just to get a few kids to play since they wanted to ride rides or try different booths, but when kids did walk by we would scream and show off the prizes they could win. When we would get tickets to go get water we would have a couple of mins to check out the other booths. It was so interesting and fun to see where other volunteers ended up at. It was also fun trying out so booths, even though they were super hard. At the end of the day it felt good just seeing the kids run around and testing their luck. I never expected it to be so much fun. Till next year St. I festival.

June-tastic DCM! What’s a better celebration of the end of the school year and the beginning of the first days of summer than a summer potluck with some key club love? This picnic style potluck was just the beginning of this amazing, sunny bright day. After the wonderful and accomplishing meeting with our very special, very handsome own LTG, Mr. Jordan Garcia, he updated us with daily projects and such. With our outstanding commitment and efforts, D30S finally ELIMINATED Maternal Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) from Madagascar, the 35th country. Only 24 more countries to go! What an amazing accomplishment. At the end of the meeting, we moved on to fundraising for our projects such as Project Eliminate and Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP). Selling these adorable pins (from the beautiful Jenny Chung), cute sun chains, yellow D30S lanyards, vintage division t-shirts, and the grey D30S shirt, these amazing D30S Sun mascot goodies all went as donations to our funding charities. Soon follows the delicious food! Food varying from fried rice, pizza, pasta, spaghetti with meatball, cookies, chips, soda, and much much more, these glorious foods were brought from each club. Our very own OAKC brought mouthwatering, homemade pasta. (Thank you Chanel Kim!(; ) Once the splendid food was near gone, as a whole division, we participated in fun bonding games led by spirit commissioner Darren J David and Adrian Maningding. Playing various bonding games, it resulted to meeting new people and even brought the division closer together as a whole. As a final game for the whole June-tastic DCM and the festivity of summer, it ended in a huge water balloon war. Water splashing everywhere, everyone aimed for anyone they saw and got revenge for those who needed the payback. Overall, this amazing first day of summer was the best, shared with those who have the love for the community and the love for key club.

June DCM The first DCM of the summer! And it was the hardest one to plan. This seemingly simple picnic and water balloon fight DCM actually took a week's worth of planning, and I had to call all my board members together to have an hour long meeting through chat. Why did it take so much planning? First off, I should've volunteered Oxford to bring pizza instead of pasta. You don't have to make pizza. You can just buy it! But no, I was persistent on Oxford brining pasta because we had talked about it at our Visions Meeting and the board members said Costco pasta was super easy. Although it was hard to find the pasta and make it, the pasta was super delicious in the end, so I guess it was worth. Also, we had to make at least 100 water balloons. Being an overachiever, I wanted Oxford to bring more than that. But when would we make the balloons? Last year, we made them at a board member's house and then transported them to the park, but none of us could drive this year! Oh no! Instead, my historians were able to split up the duties and make the balloons a day before and Oxford ended up bringing the most water balloons. Although June DCM was pretty stressful, also because chaperone requirements were stricter this year, it allowed me to demonstrate how great I am at delegating and how fun Key Club can really be.

Officer Training Conference Since I became a Key Club board member in my sophomore year of high school, I have attended every single Officer Training Conference. Typically, I would shy myself away from the colorful spirits of Region 3 and smile forcefully at those who wave hello. I would cheer monotonously with the yellow crowd and doze off during what seemed like endless sessions of strangers who I’m suppose to know but really don’t. I wouldn’t take anything seriously or with the slightest ounce of consideration. Yet in the past weekend at OTC, I was filled with unbelievable excitement and joy. Maybe because it was my last Officer Training Conference in high school and I suddenly felt sentimental or the fact that I seemed to regain the passion I had as a freshman when I first joined Key Club, but it felt great. It may be because I saw Jordan Garcia, Division 30 South’s LTG and a very good friend of mine, speaking words of wisdom up at the podium or the sights of new friends from other schools and divisions. Whatever it was I suddenly got this feeling that I can do more for this organization, for my club, and for the community. Many students have this preconceived notion of what Key Club is all about (trust me, I had one), and most do not understand or do not want to understand it (I certainly had my skepticism). And after having this experience, these past 3 years of immersing myself in such a cause, I finally understand how important Key Club members are and Key Club as whole. Watching all these students, these leaders at OTC express concern for their clubs reminded me of what Key Club is all about. Service. Dedication. Effort. And it’s not just to the community but to its development. It’s to the members. And although many do not see what happens behind the scenes of their home club or do not see the greater cause they represent and volunteer for, it inspires me to reach out even more. It’s hard work, and sometimes I don’t understand why I do certain tasks or follow certain expectations, but I still do them because I believe that there is a grander purpose to it. And those colorful, t-shirt wearing leaders that surrounded me that day, believe in that too or at least believe in serving others. In my opinion, that is the foundation of Key Club, and even though I do not know the names of every single LTG in the region or basic, historical Key Club facts, I at least know why I’m a member, and I plan on leading my club with passion and with effort. And of course, with the knowledge I gained from this year’s OTC. (This time, I paid attention)

This was my first OTC ever. Many officers told me that it was very boring. This was partly true, but I would say it was mostly because I was very tired that day. When we went to actually be in the conferences, it wasn’t that bad. I felt really bad because for the first one, I didn’t know where to go so I just followed Jennifer to the Tech and Bulletin Editor meeting. However, I was not that interested in it and I was very sleepy so I kept feeling myself doze off. I felt very bad, but I mostly was able to keep myself awake. I now regret that I didn’t go to a meeting that I truly would have listened to well. I should have gone to the BEEing a Leader meeting or the meeting for secretary because I’m interested in that role. The next conference was different. I chose to go to one that I was actually interested in. I went to Membership and Team Building. It was very interesting! I was wide awake for that conference and it was not dull. I also learned many new things through it. Although OTC was very long and kind of tiring, it was an overall great experience. I learned many new things and I would like to go again next year!

My First Time Walking into Estancia High School, I was filled with emotions of anxiety and curiosity, not really knowing what OTC would be like. Because I was elected late last year into my division position, I had not received any prior training or gone to the previous year’s OTC. Although I had attended DCON, and I had some idea of the events, I was still naturally quite curious. I walked in, scrambling to find familiar faces from my school and my division. With their bright yellow shirts, my usual crowd stood out. After navigating to them, signing in, and taking a seat, I was relieved to find that the schedule was much like a compact DCON. With opening and closing sessions, along with workshops to fill up the remaining time slots in between.
Learning in the Summer After having lunch and attending the opening session, we all shuffled to the six classrooms graciously provided to us by the school. Due to my month out of school already, I gave my best effort in order to pay attention and learn, even if I found myself daydreaming and staring blankly at the presenters at some points. Overall, I felt like I came away with the key points and learned a little bit more about my position, and about public speaking, which has been one of my biggest fears for since childhood.
One More Time? Leaving Estancia High School after the closing session, I felt extremely tired and exhausted after the long day. Although I felt like the experience was worthwhile, I was inherently tired and I could not deny it. Upon leaving, however, I felt like I would miss these experiences once high school was over in a couple of years. I hoped I could come back next year as an officer and continue to learn and support the community.

Project Eliminate is a project that the Kiwanis family has supported for the last few years however this project is ending in October 2015. The Kiwanis Family and UNICEF teamed up to end MNT or maternal and neonatal tetanus that ends many new born babies and their mothers each year. The Kiwanis Family want to ELIMINATE this disease from all over the world however this is only possible with the help of Key Club! With the Project Eliminate, we have been able to eliminate MNT from many countries and most recently Madagascar! This was only possible with the help of us. With a dollar and 80 cents, we are able to save a mother and her child. Recently at Officer Training Conference, we learned how our goal for Project Eliminate by October 2015 was to raise 500,000 dollars! This is only possible if we get all of your support and make sure that this project is successful. Project Eliminate has many ways for you to get involved for example, Whitney Key Club had a fundraiser where they sold apparel with the numbers 1234 printed on the front. This is to show the ages that you are supporting by purchasing the apparel. Some more ideas include: -Give away flower pots exchange for a donation -Plan a Walk that donates it profits towards the project. -Ask a local restaurant to hold a fundraiser with a profit going towards the Eliminate Project and so much more!
