‘Tis the season of love! Let’s spend some time to think about the caring love that this organization embodies. What do I love about Key Club? I love the people I’ve met in Key Club. People of all ages, ethnicities, and personalities can come together through Key Club. Whether we came for service hours, leadership opportunities, or a social life, this club is something that unites us through thick and thin. And that’s what makes this club special – you can form connections with people inside Key Club and become even better friends with them outside of Key Club. I couldn’t be any more grateful for all the connections that I’ve formed from Fresno to Diamond Bar to Huntington Beach to right here in Cypress. So, what do YOU love about Key Club?

For the rest of this term, I will be serving you as your Oxford Academy Bulletin Editor! Christina has gone on to do bigger and better things, such as becoming Division 30 South next lieutenant governor so let's give a hand to her! I will do my best to post newsletters on time and keep you up to date with OA Key Club's latest activities! I'm excited to be working with the board, and excited to see what I can bring to the table! I've scrapped so many different versions of this newsletter and given up countless of times because I truly underestimated how difficult it was, but life is full of living and learning! It saddens me that this term is coming to a close soon, but I hope that it has been kind to you! Key Club is a place that offers countless of things from meeting new people and building bonds, to volunteering and finding a love for service. January Bake Sale | 12 | Timmy Bui Yet again, another splendid bake sale! Bake sales are always so much work, but they are extremely rewarding. This is not just because of the hundreds of dollars we end up fundraising for PTP, but also because of how thrilling it is to be able to drop off gifts to who donate and support the charity! I was one of the officers designated to deliver baked goods. I’m one of those people who find excitement in driving on the road, so the three or four days I spent searching up addresses, memorizing routes, and exploring the maps were unforgettable. Of course, I remember having to crash on the bed after every road trip, and my mom periodically expressed her concerns on my driving ability, but I figured that these tasks are how I get even more experienced for the future. What a satisfying and fresh event!

Time Flies By | 8

New Term, New Leaders | 12 | Helen Tran The month of January marks not only the start of a new year, but the start of selecting new leaders for the upcoming new term. As most of you know, the Key Club term is ending quickly and before you know it, the 2021-2022 term will start. In the past, it’s always been a bittersweet goodbye to those seniors who led our club, so I still can’t believe that I’m now in their shoes as part of the ℅ 2021. However, enough of this sappy talk! I’ll save that for another article. I would just like to express my astonishment and admiration towards the members of our club. From watching Christina deliver her speech at Conclave to seeing the start of Executive Elections at Oxford, I’m truly excited to see the future leaders step up and make the most of the next term. This year was far from what each of us expected, yet seeing everyone work with the limited resources has shown me the strength that we hold. I know that our club is in good hands, especially while watching our executive elections. The level of confidence and especially passion within the candidates brings a lot of hope for the future leaders of our club. As a senior, although I’m graduating, I can’t wait to see what the future executives and board accomplish! Best of luck to all!

Year is Going, "Bye"| 12 | Kenny Le Everything is zooming by so quickly. And I am so happy because retirement is getting closer and closer! I would say it’s bittersweet, but it really isn’t. This year was almost as terrible as seventh grade, which is saying a lot for me, but that just makes me even more excited for what next term’s board is going to do. I won’t have to worry about whether they’ll improve the club from last term. I won’t have to worry about whether we will be able to fundraise more. I won’t have to worry about whether the Vice President will be better than me or not. If they literally do any event in-person next year, that’s already going to be an amazing achievement for them. Every single one of next year’s executive board will do so great. So, as I continue reaping the benefits of being a second-semester senior, I look to a future that can only shine brighter (hopefully)! I fully believe that next year’s exec board will exceed my expectations. Anyways, I say all this, but I am also super relieved that this term has gone so well. We’ve smashed my very very very very low expectations, by all accounts. There have been many hiccups, disappointments, and interesting situations. But, OAKC remains standing as one of Oxford’s most active clubs. Yay that’s it okay bye see you next month

My Second Term | 10 | Leann Vo This term has honestly been one of the most interesting years I have ever had to experience. It is the complete opposite of my first term in Key Club. I started Key Club over the summer of 2019 and from then on, I went to a Key Club event almost weekly. In order to attend events, I would have to change out of my sweatpants and oversized t-shirt into typical clothes. Now that all events are online, I basically never have to leave my room to earn hours, except for events like Charity Miles, however it still is possible to complete charity miles your own room. After reflecting on this last term, I can simply say that I truly miss seeing my friends at normal events. I know for a lot of people, it has been difficult to continue serving under these difficult circumstances, however I hope that we can all continue to stay passionate together. Please make sure to wear your mask when going out that way we can hopefully get to see each other in person soon. Make sure to thank your essential workers as well for all they have done during this pandemic.

Color a Smile | 10 | Lynne Ta Last week ,Oxford held it’s first virtual servathon with Key Club participating with the Color a Smile Project. Color a Smile is a non-profit organization that helps to distribute coloring pages to anyone who is in need of a smile. On the organization’s website, there are loads of different type of coloring pages ranging from ones with dinosaurs to butterflies that you can print out and color. The possibilities are endless with crayons, colored pencils, markers all being options. Another option is drawing your own design to submit. Once you are finished coloring, all that’s left is putting it into an envelope with a stamp to send it off to their PO box. I participated in this project by coloring 5 different pages. Each page had a different element to it, I colored dinosaurs on one, butterflies on another, a rainbow, a sun, and lastly flowers. I spent hours coloring it to make sure that whoever receives it will be happy! There was also a general meeting where Color a Smile was the service project and we had District Governor Daniel Min come alongside many different Lieutenant Governor Elects in Region 3! This project was really meaningful to me because it helped me combine my love for art with my love for service. It was really satisfying when I dropped off all 5 coloring pages at my local post office because I knew that my hard work was going towards helping putting a smile on someone’s face. Making a difference on someone’s life no matter how small has always been my life goal.

Save the Ocean | 10 | Devanshi Kothari A service project we had this month for our members was Save the Ocean. Save the ocean is an app that members could download on their phones. By playing this game, members help clean the ocean since over 70% of the Earth’s surface consists of water and it is one of the most important food sources for more than half of the world’s population, yet the oceans are exposed to major threats such as overfishing and pollution. Members can support the cause of cleaning up the ocean. The game is simple with members having to match the corresponding-colored bubbles with certain bubbles either speeding up the game, slowing down the speed, collecting more lives, or doubling your points. In the game, avoiding polluters is a way to win the game. Additionally, improving your scores by grabbing lives is a way to win the game. As they continue to play the game, members accumulate money for charity. The more you play the more money you earn, and the more money goes to a good cause. I was happy to participate in this service project because I know the ocean is facing plenty of issues and I wish to help make the ocean cleaner to better the lives of sea animals and every form of life living in the ocean. By lending a helping hand to the environment, I was pleased to take part in this service project. This service project was a fun, engaging project that I thoroughly enjoyed. I hope we as a club can continue doing this service project because of how interactive and enjoyable it was. I was delighted to collect money for charity to save the actual ocean. After realizing the purpose of this app, I was motivated to keep on playing because I was happy to make a difference for a cause that I am passionate about, the ocean!

Region 3 Conclave | 12

What is Conclave? | 10 | Kenneth Nguyen On January 16th, 2021, Region 3 held its Conclave for the 2021-2022 term. This event is where new Lieutenant Governors for each division of the division would be elected for the next term. Region 3 consists of the divisions: D04W, D04E, D04N, D04S, D04C, D30N, and D30S. How does Conclave work? Conclave consists of 3 parts: Nomination Ceremony, Final Caucus, and Final Comments. The first part, the Nomination Ceremony, is a process where divisions with more than 2 candidates cut down the amount of candidates to 2. The candidates for each division would say their speech and caucus. A caucus is a period of time where the audience would ask the candidate questions of why they would fit best in the position they are running for. This usually occurs in most elections, whether it is LTG or Club Executive Board elections. After each division with more than 2 candidates present their speech and caucus, delegates would vote for the candidate that they believe should pass the nomination ceremony in their division. There are 2 delegates per school club, which are often 2 members from the Executive Board. Once the results of the top 2 candidates for each division are released, the Conclave moves onto the Final Caucus. In the Final Caucus, the two candidates that pass the Nomination Ceremony take part in a 4 minute caucus, where the delegates for the division make their final votes on whom they believe should be next term’s LTG. For the divisions that only had 2 candidates or less from the start, would say their speeches and participate in a short caucus during this time. Before the results are revealed, there is often a segment called District Convention, where any current LTGs would seek endorsement by their division to run for a District Executive Position. Finally, the Final Comments are the results for the election. Christina Nguyen, a current sophomore from Oxford Academy, won! She is a current Executive Assistant and will be serving as D30S’s LTG for the 2021-2022 term! Make sure to congratulate her. Conclave is a hard process to work out, and the current LTGs and candidates have worked very hard to host it. If you couldn’t attend this year, there is a Conclave every single year! Make sure to attend next year’s Conclave!

Member Recognition Program | 14 Member Recognition Program | 11 | Lydia Lee January 31 marks a harsh deadline for all Key Club secretaries: the due date for the MRP. The MRP is the Member Recognition Program where all members have the opportunity to be recognized at District Convention. There are 4 different levels including Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum in ascending order. In order to be recognized in any of these categories, you must be a dues-paid member and meet the hours requirement for the recognition you hope to achieve. The highest level of recognition is platinum which requires completion of 10/13 categories and over 175 hours. On the other hand, it’s usually 200 hours for in person service. Very few members tend to achieve platinum recognition as you must have a position on board, DLT, or district board meet all of the requirements. This year, it was also difficult for general members to be recognized as we didn’t have any Kiwanis events that general members were able to attend other than the Kiwanis presentation on the 29th. Normally, due to the pancake breakfasts that Kiwanis hosts, it’s very easy to attend at least one Kiwanis Family event which is necessary as one of the requirements. Interclubs were only hosted through socials, meaning that members needed to attend socials to gain the requirement for that section as well. The Member Recognition Program is always a great way to recognize both officers and general members who go above and beyond in all aspects of Key Club. Although it was a difficult task to track attendance and add up all the categories, it was worth it in the end to be able to see the hard work and effort of our club be appreciated. However, to whoever the next secretary is, I have lots of advice and tips because I definitely could have managed my time better for the overall program. :D

More Memories of Key Club | 11 | Claire Lee Hi! Looking back at the term, it is pretty difficult to pinpoint a favorite memory in Key Club this year. One of the biggest factors of Key Club before quarantine that I genuinely miss is that I was able to meet new friends from all around the state, and a gigantic event was coming up right before COVID-19 hit: DCON. Fortunately, we were able to at least experience Fall Rally, which is considered another huge event for Key Club. I can still see Mrs.Vosskuhler and Mrs.Siggson so excited on the bus, and I also remember us freezing to death on the bus. I can still see groups of colors roaming around in the parking lots of Six Flags Magic Mountain. I can still see Ali jumping around on the stage in joy after we won the Spirit Stick second time in a row. Looking back on the good days, it recalls reasons why I was so passionate about Key Club, aside from the fact that I was able to directly impact the community in a positive way. All I can do now is relive the memories and hope I can experience them once again for the last time.
