Hey Sunshines!

C

onclave was only two weeks ago and it is crazy to see how Division 30 South has already elected their next LTG for the 2020-2021 term. A big congratulations to Ali Al-Saleem from Western High School who is currently Western HS Key Club’s president. For those of you who have

not had the chance to get to know and interact with him, I hope that you have the opportunity to in the future. I can confidently say his exuberant and radiant personality will guarantee good times.

On top of Conclave, our home club held our first round of elections last week for treasurer and secretary candidates. It was both exciting and reminiscent to see all the candidates deliver their speech and answer caucus questions in front of a huge crowd, because I was once in their same position. To all the candidates running for any executive position, I just wanted to let you all know how proud I am of your contributions as officers this term. You all are exceptional leaders and individuals who are taking your service to the next level by taking the initiative to lead and bring the

club to greater heights. With that, I wish the best of luck to all candidates!

Furthermore, District Convention (DCON) 2019 is coming up very soon. What exactly is DCON? DCON is an annual celebration hosted by California-Nevada-Hawaii (CNH) Key Club, which highlights the accomplishments of its members and allows the attendees the opportunity to attend informative workshops. In addition, attendees will be able to celebrate alongside Key Clubbers from across California, Nevada, and Hawaii and celebrate an amazing year of service and leadership. If you attended Six

Flags, this might be an experience that will top your Six Flags experience, so be sure to sign up as soon as possible as the deadline to pay will be February 8!

Hey Key-Clubbers!

o think that the Key Club term is coming to an end. It was just two weeks ago when we saw our future LTG being elected at Conclave. Executive elections are almost done. Soon our 2019-2020 board will be determined and next thing we know, appointed board applications will be released. There’s not that many

notifications this month besides DCON (and Vina already covered it in her President Corner) so I’ll try to keep them nice and short: •

There’s going to be a Bake

Sale Friday, February 1st at the Albertsons in Fullerton

(2291 W Malvern Ave, Fullerton, CA 92833). Please come volunteer and/or donate baked goods to help fund for PTP! •

The Oxford

Entrance Exam will be on Saturday, February 2nd at Oxford. Sign

ups for volunteers are filled so if you signed up please remember to show up and support the incoming Patriots!

The D30N

x D30S Servathon will be on Saturday, February 2nd at Twila Reid Park

in Anaheim. If you have time, be sure to come out! The Servathon will take place from 10 am to 2 pm. We’ll be doing all sorts of activities such as creating care packages, making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and bonding activities! What’s even better lunch is provided!!! :)) •

DCON 2019 will be from Friday, April 12th to Sunday, April 14th at Ontario Convention Center. More information can be found in the

emails. The price this year will approximately be $250.

rose float d TRACY VU| VICE PRESIDENT OF SPECIAL PROJECTS

T

his year was my last time volunteering at the Rose Float Decorating and I was pleasantly surprised that many underclassmen showed up to this event. It’s refreshing to see new faces at our events especially our annual division volunteers.

It was really cold in the morning, so you normally see people wearing 2 to 3 layers of sweaters or jackets however it did warm up a little bit throughout the event, but it was still cold. At the volunteer, members are either working with the vials and flowers or working on the actually rose float themselves.

I was asked if I wanted to work on the floats and my friends and I went to stick flowers on the float. Although the float had limited spacing for people to be on the scaffolding, my friends and I split into 2 groups but we all still had a blast in the end because it was like a chain of system that made our work fun and go smoothly.

I highly recommend members to come out to this event with their friends because working together on something so grand is exciting and lots of funny moments can happen.

It is super rewarding when we see the

Rose Floats appear on television because it’s like, “Hey I worked on that float!” and you know that your efforts don’t go to waste.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! It is finally here, the start of a

new year, 2019. As a senior, I am beyond excited for this upcoming year, as I am finally graduating! Don’t worry, to all you younger key

clubbers, the time will come, faster than you think, so really treasure these fleeting Highschool moments.

In other news, the division event rose float parade volunteering has just recently ended. This year was my first year at the rose float parade volunteering, and although a volunteer must pay money and snatch a limited spot to volunteer at the rose float, I would say it is completely worth it. After all they even provide delicious Indian food and hotdogs. The rose floats themselves are a looker, and to be able to participate in the creation of the final product, I think, is a privilege in itself. I

hope that everyone considers coming to this event next year, it is definitely worth it.

On a final note, I would like to wish our entire key club a happy holidays, and a bountiful new years!

ROSE FLOAT DECORATING (CONT.)

A

s a kid, I was one to be amazed by the endless floods of floats passing by on the television when the annual Rose Parade took place. It’s not like the event was ever super important to me, but its place in my childhood swayed me into volunteering to decorate the floats this year.

It was super cold, as expected— a low of about 35 degrees. My toes were about to freeze over as we listened to the instructions from the Phoenix workers. They were friendly to us, but I could tell it was a strict task ahead of us. It just made me more anxious to start working and escape the cold.

A man asked for some people who were willing to climb some scaffolding. My partner Giang and I immediately rose up to the challenge, not knowing the labor that was to come.

The premise was simple. Climb up, spread glue onto the areas, stab holes into it, and place the correctly colored carnations through it. Make it pretty but quickly. It took us 7 painstaking hours to get the job done, but it was rewarding. Climbing up the

ladders and planks was somewhat dangerous, but that was what made our hard-earned victory all the more memorable in retrospect.

woke up bright and early to get to Savanna High School by 5:30 am. Everyone was dressed in at least three layers. I wore like 4 layers of coats and 2 layers of pants and I was still freezing cold when we got to Irwindale.

For the float, I was responsible for cutting flowers and gluing flower petals to the

float. Even though it may not seem like a lot, our tasks were very time consuming since we basically took seven hours doing nothing but cutting and gluing.

Lunch was great. Kiwanis provided everyone with hotdogs, chips, and soda. Another program provided all volunteers with Indian food.

Overall, it was a great experience for me, especially since it was my first time volunteering for the Rose Float Parade. I would definitely recommend this

event to everyone. Of course, I’ll be sure to come next year too!

L

ast week, I attended December DCM: Ice Ice Baby where I made the cutest yarn Christmas hat

I’ve ever seen. I had a really good time bonding with other Key Clubbers throughout the DCM, and

I also had the chance to reconnect with old Key Clubber friends whom I had not met in a long time. My favorite part about DCM was watching White Elephant. While I did not bring my own present, it was really funny seeing Key Clubbers fight for presents.

With the year coming to an end and with finals coming up, it was nice seeing how Key Clubbers put aside their studying to bond at DCM.

PAULINE DOAN | HISTORIAN s the holiday season is coming up around the corner, every club should gather together to celebrate all the hard work they’ve accomplished throughout the term. On December 22, 2018 this is what OAKC did.

The holiday board party was actually hosted at my house and seeing everyone gradually

come in was so exciting because it just meant that the excitement would commence soon. Once everyone arrived, we took some pictures and exchanged our Secret Santa gifts.

While some wrapped their gifts in wrapping paper or used Christmas/holiday bags, I put my gift in a

big moving box. Looks like my gift was a representation of my heart: too big :D All jokes aside, all of these gifts were such a nice treat because it showed that our fellow board members appreciated all that we do and recognized our hard work.

Seeing my fellow Key Clubbers outside of a school environment was very comfortable because we didn’t have this stress on us and we were just allowed to relax and have fun with one another. We played a Kahoot game, Cards Against Humanity, Mafia, and so much more.

All of these small aspects of the party just made me feel so much more bonded with my club.

Especially since someone from DLT, Anna , who I don’t talk to very much, came. I got to know her so much better and she is an amazing person! At the end of it all, everyone was stuffed to the max with delicious food and experienced a major food coma. Food babies for the win!

I’m so incredibly grateful for this organization and the people that it’s brought me closer to. I honestly cannot express my gratitude to this club enough. Without this club, I wouldn’t be who I am today and I wouldn’t have gained the skill sets I gained through my position.

Key Club was one of the reasons why 2018 was such an amazing year for me. It’s why 2019 will be an amazing year for me.

I can tell it’s going to be one of the best parts of my

entire high school career, and I can tell it will be or continue to be the same experience for many others.

W

ith only four months left in the term, I have released the executive applications for the 2019-2020 term. Time flew by quickly, and I am excited to see all the applicants for the executive positions— president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer—work hard to

create their speeches and prepare for the caucus session for Election Day. It is truly an eye-opening experience to run for a position. Of course, speechdelivering may be a daunting task. To be anxious and have to deliver a speech to a huge crowd is a nerve-racking experience. As if delivering a speech wasn’t nerve-racking enough—add in the caucus session! The caucus session, often difficult to prepare for, is impromptu. Your audience asks any question and you must strategically form an effective and impactful response. Finally, there is the wait time as the old executive board counts all the ballots and tally up the votes.

All in all, the whole process can be scary and daunting, but it’s a great

learning experience— one you would not want to miss out on!

NATALIE MELENDEZ | PUBLICIST n December 7th I attended the annual West Anaheim Christmas Tree Lighting

at Twila Reid Park.

This event was the perfect way to start out the month of December. The event started promptly at 5pm, but even then, plenty of people had already arrived.

All around, everyone was dressed in festive gear and having a great time.

As for myself, I got to help out in the kids’ craft area. Out of all the craft stations, I was in charge with the card making station. Kids chose between two different card types and I was in charge of distributing and making sure everything at the station was in order.

About an hour and a half later, all the Christmas card supplies had run out and pretty soon the rest of the stations followed suit. The crafts area was a success and all the kids had a great time.

After cleaning up our stations, all craft volunteers had the chance to walk around and visit the different booths. Of course, we also all had the chance to watch the tree lighting. All of the surrounding lights were turned off and suddenly a towering pine tree lit up in color. It was definitely a magical sight.

In the end I had a great time and was feeling as festive as ever. I’ll definitely be returning next year for more fun.

TOBI YAO | HISTORIAN or every key clubber at Oxford, Whitney, Kennedy, or Cypress, Hope Food Distribution is a staple volunteering event that occurs every other Saturday. It takes place at St. Irenaeus, and volunteers pass out food to people who are in need. We normally get large numbers of volunteers for this event, and there are regulars who attend every

week, and others who are just starting to go out to key club events.

For the Christmas season, there was a two week process that I got to be a part of. On the first Saturday of December, volunteers packed large boxes full of canned and dry food such as soups, boxed macaroni, cake mix, and canned fruit. Everyone worked together quickly in a line and we were able to quickly make food boxes for one hundred seventy-five families. The organizers even tried to show their thankfulness to us for volunteering by preparing breakfast for all the volunteers, and it was very uplifting to see everyone working together in the holiday spirt.

The next week, everyone was encouraged to dress up in their Christmas gear: ugly sweaters, Santa hats, reindeer antlers, and scarves. We passed out those boxes along with a variety of food that would normally not be there such as frozen meat, toys for the kids, and even a pancake breakfast set up by the Kiwanis across the parking lot. The turn up was more than I had ever seen at a Hope Food Distribution before. Regulars lit up when they saw the new items, and were eager to say thanks and wish the volunteers a happy holidays. We normally finish around nine, but today we had people coming through the line till ten. Every single one of them was grateful and in the spirit of giving. All of us working at the pizza section planned out to say “Happy Holidays!” in unison whenever we handed out a pizza, and I could tell that the people who received it were amused by our silly greeting.

One of my freshman friends from school came out to her first key club volunteering event, and I was glad to see that she was having fun seeing the people she gave to smile in return. When I asked if she would ever come back to volunteer again, she answered “yeah, of course!”

ey Suns! The holiday sea-sun has been filled with so many activities this year! And to celebrate the gift of giving, Oxford Academy Key Club has been volunteering at many events to keep up the holiday spirit! Throughout the month of December, we are participating in so many events-- Rose Float

Decorating, holiday potlucks, tree lighting ceremonies, ugly sweater contests, and so much more! This year, the joy of helping our communities is spreading because of us and our dedication to serving others in our lives. We definitely need to continue giving back to others, as it spreads happiness to our communities and ultimately to our world.

So as a Key Clubber and as a human being, if you see anyone who is in need of help, offer your support! It really will put a smile on their face-- and on yours! Don’t let the amazing presents you’ll receive stop you from putting everything down to offer assistance to friends, family, and strangers. However big or small the action is, it matters and will make a lasting impact. And if you need help or inspiration, don’t

hesitate to tell your family and friends! This holiday sea-sun, the most important thing to keep in mind is that you should cherish those close to you, but don’t be afraid to reach out to others and offer a helping hand. Know that the year is almost over, so make some memories. Go out into your communities and explore the wonderful opportunities that are waiting for you. Open your heart and just talk to new people.

Always remember to be kind, and keep in mind to be resourceful and respectful. And always look out for more emails from Oxford Academy Key Club, since there will be many new events in the upcoming new year! So even though the holiday sea-sun sets on the hori-sun, the gift of giving doesn’t stop! Events will

continue being provided to all Key Clubbers, and you’ll all have a chance to make an impact, no matter how big or how small, on your home, school, and communities! Go out into your neighborhood and see if you can serve those who live right next to you. Inspire your parents, siblings, and friends to help through helping them. Make a New Year’s resolution to give. And don’t stop giving. Don’t stop loving. Don’t stop doing. Keep on shining, Suns. The holiday sea-sun won’t last forever, but know that your actions will. Be a Key Clubber. Be a person.

excited to make friends and best friends and boyfriends (hehee). I’m

excited for all the new service events to come so I can come to new places and help new people. I want to go to Beach Boomba and participate in the games, attend Fall Rally South and take pictures with cute people, and go to the Rose Float Decorating and actually get assigned rose cutting duty! Most intriguing of all, I can’t wait to see what juicy content I’ll have for my upcoming articles (being a content creator is so tiring)! That’s all I have right now.
