PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Hi Key Clubbers! Hope that you thoroughly enjoyed your holidays! Second semester is here, meaning we only have a few more months to push through until we can enjoy summer again. The end is almost here! January is always an exciting month for Key Club, because we get to elect all our new leaders for the 2016-2017 Key Club term. It's a little early, but with DCON in April, we have to elect them beforehand. Our entire executive cabinet (Pres., VP, Treasurer, Sec) is being elected within the next two weeks, and in those next two weeks we will all know who our next leaders are. Whoever they are, I'll be super glad to put the club into their capable hands. We also get to elect our next Lt.G at Conclave! (Be sure to come out to see all the rad speeches!) Soon after, appointed board applications will be released and I really hope you decide to apply! Every member is special to us, so be sure to take that extra step into Key Club to learn what it really is about. We have tons of different positions, from spirit coordinator, to publicist, to tech editor, to historian, and more, so be sure to check them out whenever they come. Second semester is such a month of new beginnings and I am definitely excited to see what's going to come into store for the next month. With that, here's the quote of the month: "Isn't it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?� --L.M. Montogomery It's a new semester, so go out and do things you haven't before! But make sure you keep those 95%s, and don't do anything you'll regret.

Hey OA Key Clubbers, Happy New Years to you all! I hope everyone enjoyed their winter break, Christmas, and New Years! Sadly, after the two weeks, we are going back to school tomorrow! I know, sigh. But don’t fret! There are a lot of exciting things coming ahead that you all should know about! First and for most, ELECTIONS are coming soon!!!! Be sure to come out and hear your next term’s potential executive board, from President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. It’s going to be held on January 6th and 13th in the Choir Room during Lunch! Please come in early and don’t miss out on this chance you let your voice be heard!
Nonetheless, I wanted to inform you all that CLUBREFRESH is NEXT WEEK!!! I know! Everything is coming in like a breeze. Be sure to remind all your friends to join Key Club. Even though there is only a semester left of school, your hours are only accounted for if you are a paid-due Key Club member. That means you paid the $11.50 membership fee. If you haven’t done that yet, be sure to turn in the application and pay the amount to Mr. Acala’s office so your hours will be counted! Now that that’s all settled, I wish you all the best year yet. Even if your grades were ‘bad,’ this is your chance to do better! But always remember that the grade does not define who you are or what you will become. Though the letter may be a big deal to colleges and your parents, it doesn't change who you are. It definitely doesn't define your destiny. Even though HOPE Food Distribution is a biweekly event, the food distribution event on December 19, 2015 was different. Because this was the last food distribution before Christmas Day, the event was much larger than usual. A larger number of families than usual arrived to obtain free food from all the food groups. In addition, because the event coordinators wanted to ensure each family could have their Christmas feast, a larger number of food options (including ham) and larger portions (such as a gigantic sack of potatoes) were given. Also in honor of the season of giving, breakfast sponsored by McDonalds was served to all the families. The sizzling of sausages and aroma of syrup and fresh pancakes floated in the morning air. Each person enjoyed plates upon plates of pancakes with syrup and butter and sausages served by Key Club members while sipping on orange juice and coffee. The tables were filled with families of varying sizes, ethnicities, ages, and more. But they all had one thing in common. They were less fortunate and they needed help. And I’m so happy that all the other Key Clubbers and I had the opportunity to help them and give them a reason to smile.
And so, on this chilly Saturday morning, I still felt warm inside, the warmest I had felt in a long time. In the midst of rushing to gather volunteer hours for college applications, we high schoolers seem to sometimes forget why we should be volunteering. And how us volunteering benefits us. Or how it benefits our community. Once in a while, we all just need to sit back and consider why colleges might even want you to have volunteer hours in the first place. Also, as we rush to gather volunteer hours, we tend to volunteer at events that we have no passion or care for. Sure, playing with or tutoring children can be fun and you still are giving back to the community. But it still doesn’t give you this same warm feeling that only comes when you know you helped people who really needed it. And so, I highly recommend that Key Clubbers sacrifice just three hours from every other Saturday to help the less fortunate families at HOPE Food Distribution. You’ll be benefiting them and yourself.

Hello Suns! First off, I’d like to thank all of the members who came out to the bonding event this past week. You guys really made the event as great as it was! Personally, I know that I had a really fun time at the bonding event, as it was a great way to bond with members that I had never talked to before. There’s no better way to bond with other people than to frustratingly tie blankets together haha. But in all seriousness, we truly put the “bonding” in “bonding event”! I’m hoping that by now you guys realize that this is basically an advertisement to come join us at the next bonding event, because it will definitely be worth your while. If this isn’t enough to convince you to join us in the next bonding event, the free food should definitely be a nice incentive. There’s nothing better than standing in freezing cold weather waiting for the chance to pick up some delicious food. I really recommend that you decide to partake in the next bonding event, as it’s a good change of pace from the volunteering and community service that we normally do. Stay bright Suns, as you’ll need to shine in order to survive this abysmally cold weather!

As I publicize the next election season for the 2016-2017 year, I feel a lot of different things: overwhelmed, but relieved, excited, yet nostalgic. Mostly, I feel relieved to know that the new President can take over some of my duties, so that I can feel being a second semester senior in full force. I am excited for the new executive board, whoever they may be, to step up to the plate and change this club in ways that haven’t been done before (in a good way, of course). While the task can be daunting, especially knowing that you’ll no longer be the one executing instruction but rather giving instructions, it is rewarding to take the time and realize how far you and the club have come. The progress really is intertwined because you invest so much time and life into it, but that’s a sign you’re doing things right! To whomever the new board may be, I know you’ll do great things. Just make sure to trust your instinct, learn from past experiences, and remember that sometimes, micromanaging is okay. It’ll be a rollercoaster, so make sure to remember to have fun along the way even if you’re scared!

PTP otherwise known as Pediatric Trauma Prevention or Program is a project that the Kiwanis has been supporting for a very long time. Did you know that Unintentional injury is the #1 killer among children under the age of 14? More than 90 percent of these injuries are preventable, however the only way that we can prevent these diseases is if we make a difference, one baby step at a time! Many of these injuries are caused by the lack of equipment or protection. When the Kiwanis International realized the need to decrease all of these accidental deaths, they created the Pediatric Trauma Program in 1994. PTP is used to create and find programs to do many things. For example. PTP trains pediatric doctors, nurses, and first responders to specialize in childcare. In addition, PTP finds programs to purchase much needed pediatric medical equipment such as incubators for the newborns. It is also used to create and expand community outreach programs that teach the locals about the importance of helmets, seat belts, and playground safety, etc. There are many ways that we can help PTP. We can sponsor service projects that revolve around topics such as bicycle safety. We can also work with the Children’s Miracle Network which helps out with PTP often. Recently, the Children’s Miracle Network teamed up with Dairy Queen and iHOP in a fundraiser, where you can get their delicious food and help a cause all at the same time! Nonetheless, we ourselves, can host fundraisers so we are able to donate towards this crucial cause. This is only possible if we get every involved with the project. And it all starts with you. If you are free, come and help as much as you can!

Pediatric Trauma Program 23
January is This month’s Spotlight on service is Pediatric Trauma Program. Pediatric Trauma is the leading cause of death and injury among children ages 14 and under in the United States. However this can be prevented. Pediatric Trauma is caused by the lack of awareness of bicycle safety, seatbelt safety, and wearing proper safety equipment such as helmets and knee pads. The Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) helps reduce the number of children in our Cali-Nev-Ha District who are killed or injured by trauma by supporting pediatric hospitals and developing programs for the community.
