Hey Sunshines!

I

t is my second to last president’s corner because the term ends in less than one and a half months. Just a week or two ago, OAKC released the new executive board for the 2019-2020 term and just a few days ago I completed my training for my president-elect, Tobi Yao. Training was both exciting and reminiscent as I got

to remember when I first trained for presidency and now, no longer the mentee but the mentor.

Something I also completed this month was my President’s Portfolio for the President’s District Contest. Spending countless hours to complete this portfolio, I felt extremely proud and satisfied with the work I produced. It was 46 pages worth of my work as president this term and reflection on all my years of Key Club. However, I did not apply for this contest for the award; I wanted to create something that I could use to look back in many years and recall my journey in Key Club and how this organization has played a significant role in my high school career.

With the end of February, this means the release of Appointed Board Applications. I remember when I applied for my first position back in 9th grade and got the call that I was appointed as a club publicist. The waiting time was both scary and exciting, and I hope you all take the chance to apply for a leadership position, especially if you want to be a part of the team that takes this club to greater heights next term. If you do get elected, look forward to the countless opportunities and memorable experiences in your future term!

With the remaining weeks of this term, I hope you all make this term one for the books!

T

o think that the Key Club term is almost coming to an end. I could’ve sworn that it was just yesterday that I was rejoicing over the fact that I received a phone call from Tracy saying that I received the role as Bulletin Editor. And next thing we know, I won’t be writing in these editor’s notes any longer. :(( But not to worry, I’ll

still be serving everyone of you, as a treasurer! Thank you for everyone who came out to support me despite me forgetting my speech as soon as I got in front of the crowd.

So like usual, I’ll try to make it nice and short since Vina , being the awesome president that she is, already talked about everything there is to talk about in her president’s corner.

So here are the announcements from this month: •

Appointed Board Applications are due Wednesday, March 6th at 3:00 PM to Tobi Yao (our president elect!) or Mrs. Vosskuhler in room 102. I really recommend all you underclassmen and juniors to apply, especially if you’re dedicated in Key Club!

Key Events for January VINA NGUYEN | PRESIDENT Servathon AUHSD held the annual Servathon on Martin Luther King Non-Student Day. OAKC, partnered with Culinary Club, this year decided to create peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to be donated to a local homeless shelter, specifically Long Beach Rescue Mission.

Over 60 people came out to serve early Monday morning and as a result, we were able to make 448 pb and j sandwiches. Overall, we had a very successful turnout and a day of wonderful service.

Ice Skating Social Division 30 South held the annual Ice Skating Social. This year, this social was to fundraise for the Thirst Project. We were able to raise over $500 for this project just from this event alone.

Elections Lastly, our club held the executive elections, which includes the roles president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. Each candidate for each position was required to deliver a two-minute maximum speech as well as answer questions for two minutes through the caucus session. As I asked each candidate questions, it was exciting to see how much these officers have grown from their initial start as appointed officers. I am excited to see what is in store for our future leaders and next term!

There were many service events this month, but these were just some of the main events to not miss out on!

Oxford Proctoring

A

JENNIFER VO | PUBLICIST s the new year commences, familiar volunteer events are making their way back around. One of the upcoming events I’m really excited to volunteer for is the Oxford test. Last year, I remember we just checked in students and helped teachers pass out test materials. I proctored with Mr.Hodges and he let me read his books. It’s nothing extravagant, but being a part of the process

makes me really nostalgic. The kids there are all so small and cute and nervous. I really just want to give them a hug and tell them that it’s okay? Being around them reminds me of myself back when I was their age. It makes me reflect on how much I’ve grown-- and at the same time how much more I need to grow.

Just like them, there are so many things that I find hard right now that I’ll probably easily brush past in the future. It gives me motivation and hope that I’ll continue to grow and learn in the future.

My goal is to

sign up next time too so I can get to see the new seventh graders every year :)

Executive Election TIMMY BUI | HISTORIAN

F

or next year’s term, I ran to be Oxford Key Club’s secretary, and boy was it a wild adventure. I would never give back this experience, though.

Writing the speech was a difficult yet rewarding obstacle. Over the course of a few days, I struggled with writer’s block countless times, managing to inch my way into a finalized speech

ready for me to deliver.

The delivery of the speech was a whole other ballgame. Memorizing it was tedious, but I managed to pull it off smoothly on the real day.

The caucus session was scary even though I prepared myself well for it. It’s not like I did the best I could on it, but it definitely helped me with my improvisation skills and made me consider genuinely important questions for my future as a Key Clubber.

I stumbled along the way, sure, but that’s natural.

In a few years, I won’t remember how I

messed up. I’ll remember how this election provided a plethora of experience for me on my Key Club journey.

ello OA Key Clubbers!

Happy Lunar New year everybody! One month into the second semester, it is time for Key Club to establish the next year’s executive board, and soon, appointed board. It is during this time that the current officers train and hand off their jobs to the upcoming, new board for the year of 2019-

2020. Just this week, we had our presidential and vice president elections. It was surprising to see so many general members come out for the selection of the treasurer and secretary for OA Key Club for the next school year, but not that many general members come out for the president and vice president election. Nevertheless, I believe that all those who ran for positions are all highly qualified individuals, in which the results cannot accurately describe their potential in Key Club. Good job to all those who have attempted to challenge themselves through leading others in Key Club, that act in itself is one worth praise. As a senior, it is easy to see the impact that Key Club has had on many of my friends who strived to reach higher levels of authority and leadership in the club. I hope that you all take into consideration these opportunities and options made available.

With that said, I hope you are all happily servicing our community, and

good luck to your endeavors for this ongoing semester!

TRACY VU| VICE PRESIDENT OF SPECIAL PROJECTS

I

t was my second year attending Conclave, my first being the one running for LTG. This year I was a delegate and it was so interesting to be in that position.

I know how the candidates felt exactly because I was in their position be-

fore and I give major props for them taking on this big step.

Conclave was really fun because it was a region wide event and it was time to elect a new LTG. Candidates are to make a speech and answer some caucus questions. They all did a wonderful job and I really think that they will be able to fill their LTG shoes.

Conclave is a great experience to see many members demonstrate leadership and professionalism which can be useful for

those who are looking for new opportunies.

TOBI YAO | HISTORIAN

W

hile many clubs find their board members for the next term in April or May, Key Club determines the LTG elect in January. The seven different divisions in the region gather together and two representatives from each club in the respective division vote for the next LTG.

I attended conclave last year as well and I found it very inspiring listening to the different candidates talking about their love for key club and why they have become the dedicated members they are today. I especially love hearing them talking about their key club moments since each person has their own unique story. This year had the same effect on me. Candidates talked about the people who encouraged them to take on higher positions and it made me think about how I got to where I am now.

All of the Division 30 South candidates were very qualified and I could tell how long they prepared for conclave. Congratulations to Ali! I know you’ll do great in the upcoming term!

Conclave has also reminded me just how fast this term has gone by, and home elections will be completed by the end of the month as well.

PAULINE DOAN | HISTORIAN anuary 12th, 2019 marks a very special day for all of Region 3.

Today was Key Club’s annual conclave, where members of Region 3 gathered together to elect their respective LTG’s. Oxford’s representative, Leonel Contreras, did an amazing job! Although he was

not unfortunately elected, I know he’ll continue to do amazing things!

D30S’ new LTG is… Ali Al-Saleem! I have complete faith that Ali will do nothing but make our division even stronger than it ever was. The 20192020 term is already looking to be a very exciting one!

I think my favorite part about conclave was hearing other stories of how Key Club has impacted people’s lives. These people are also among one of the most hardworking and dedicated people I have ever met.

It’s really empowering to see just how impactful Key Club is, not just to me but to many others as well. Key Club may seem like just a club to the outside eye, but every Key Clubber knows the organization stands for so much more.

Key Club is family. It’s a huge, international family full of love, unity, and passion.

Never in my 15 (almost 16) years of living have I ever witnessed a bond stronger than the ones formed in Key Club.

Seeing all these nominees give their speeches really inspires me, since seeing people take initiative to put themselves out there is so motivating to me.

Although conclave was mainly a positive experience, it’s also really hard to process that the people I’ve seen this entire year will no longer be here.

The people that have put their whole hearts into Key Club will have their legacies be continued, and will live vicariously through their successor’s successes.

I’m so excited to see what this next term has in store. If it’s anything similar to how this term played out, I just know Key Club will stay winning!

AMBER SUN | VICE PRESIDENT OF MEMBER RELATIONS

T

wo Mondays ago, I spent Martin Luther King Day at Oxford Academy, serving Key Club by making Pean

and Jelly sandwiches to donate to a homeless shelter in Long Beach. This was my last Servathon of school career, but it was definitely the best Servathon I’ve ever attended.

This year, around 60 members showed up to make sandwiches, full of spirit and enthusiasm on a Monda

ing. The room seemed like a production line with members lining up around long tables and producing sandwiche

T

his past Martin Luther King Jr Day, I spent my morning at the Oxford Academy Key Club service event for the annual, districtwide Servathon. On this day, students all across the Anaheim Union High School District engage in acts of service in order to give back to their community, many of which acts are hosted by clubs throughout all AUHSD schools.

Ever since first joining Key Club in my freshman year, I ‘ve attended this event yearly. In 2017 we made thank you posters for local businesses that supported Oxford Academy and its various fundraisers, and in 2018 we made dog toys for local animal shelters. I had a really great time both years and enjoyed the fact that many familiar faces joined us for a morning full of shining service.

The same can be said for this year’s Servathon project. The OAKC service project this year was making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to donate to local homeless shelters. Like in previous years, the room was jam packed with spirited volunteers, and this time with loaves of bread and jars of peanut butter and jelly as well.

With over 40 members having shown up to engage in this act of service, the sandwich making process ran as smooth as our abundance of peanut butter.

n Monday January 21st, we did not have school because it was Martin Luther King Jr. Day. However, instead of staying at home, my friends and I decided to come to school to attend our annual district wide Servathon. There were many clubs and organizations taking part in Servathon this year. For Key Club, we partnered with Culi-

nary Club to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless.

Although I was not one of the many members to threw on gloves and made the sandwiches, I was still able to get a hands on experience. Because everyone else was busy with their own tasks, I found myself restocking all of the tables will bread, peanut butter, and jelly.

Overall, it was a great experience to bond and working together with my club. We were able to make about 500 sandwiches in the end. Go Suns!

M

y last term in Key Club. Only three months left to go.

Even though we’re almost there, at the end of the 2018-2019 term, there’s still much to do. The end of the term doesn’t mean the end of my work here. As treasurer, one of my primary responsibilities include raising money for our preferred charities. The first half of the term, leading up to Fall Rally South, was dedicated en-

tirely to fundraising for the Pediatric Trauma Program, in which I managed to raise over $1000 for. The road was long and tough but anything is possible with determination and trusty Key Clubbers to help.

Even now, my job isn’t done. In these last few months, I am now fundraising for yet another of our preferred charities, The Thirst Project. Even though senioritis is lowkey hitting and our usual Ralphs put a hold on bake sales, I’m still out here planning fundraisers for that well.

Second semester sure is tougher and more important the first, and that’s all the more reason you should continue volunteering! Specifically, you should come out to and bake some goods for the bake sales we have on February 1 and February 23!! On top of that, we’ll be having a food fest DCM for this month, which will take place on February 16, and that’s an event you don’t want to miss out on.

Now a senior, I’m nearing the end of my journey as a high school Key Clubber, but that doesn’t mean the end of my commitment to service. Even in college, I plan on continuing to volunteer and meeting new people, using the skills I’ve gained through Key Club to better my future.

The grind never stops. Not for you and not for me.

W

ith it being January this month, there were various events that happened over the course of this time period that indicated the fast approaching end to my term.

At the beginning of the month, Region 3 had our annual Conclave where all members got the chance to meet our candidates for Lieutenant Governor and delegates chose the LTGs for the upcoming term. With

the decisions and elections finalized, I felt a bittersweet feeling as I saw so many Key Club members come together to welcome our new leaders for the near future. In all honesty, even though it means that my last year as a high school Key Clubber is coming to an end, I’m so excited to see our new leaders undoubtedly take this organization to new heights. Anjika has done a tremendous job leading Division 30 South throughout this entire term, introducing new ideas at DCMs and putting in all her efforts to make sure we bonded as an entire division. Now, I have complete confidence that Ali will continue the legacy of D30S being one of the strongest divisions in the Region and help us do amazing things in the future.

On a more club based and personal level, Oxford Academy Key Club also held our own set of elections during these last two weeks of January: our 2019-2020 Executive Board elections! Seeing all of the underclassmen step up and take the opportunity to play a larger leadership role in Key Club made me feel so proud. It also brought back a lot of memories of when I was in their shoes and running for secretary. The speech and caucus session is always the most nerve wracking part of the process in my opinion, so I hoped to be there for them as a source of moral support as they showcased their passion and dedication to all members of Key Club.

After completing almost an entire term as secretary, I know it’s a difficult job that will require a lot of time from whoever ends up winning the election. Regardless, I know what the pressure and stress feels like, so I will always make sure that I am there to support my underclassmen through everything they need throughout the next term, even if I am no longer an Oxford Patriot.

With the next term in mind, I hope our new executive board will gain as much from this experience as much as I did, and best of luck to them all!
