College essays. Pain. Same thing, right? Well, yes, but no. You spend nights assembling parts of your identity in essays that are sent to the gatekeepers of undergraduate colleges, and they even steal some of your money in the process. Ultimately, the time spent on the apps accumulate into days of torment, and you’ll type thousands of words by the end of it. However, I can also tell you this: Those essays are the greatest way that you will ever get to know more about yourself as a teenager. Who cares if you faked some of the content; at some point, you start believing it yourself. To our large Class of 2021 Key Club audience, stay in the battle. To the underclassmen, prepare yourselves to be humbled and challenged. If anything, Key Club teaches us to embrace the challenge and grow from it! P.S. Don’t forget to mention Key Club in your awards and extracurriculars. They love to see it!

We made it to quarter four! Wow, time passed by fast. Everything has been ok. There’s not really anything new. As we prepare for the new term, it worries me a little, but I hope everything transitions smoothly. As for me, I just want to be happy wherever I end up. Either way, let’s finish strong! As the term comes to an end, recognition and awards come up! For District awards, most will require you to make an e-portfolio. I recommend Google Slides or Canva if you aren’t tech-savvy, but if you are then go ahead and use wherever makes you comfortable. Most of the information and directions for making the portfolio is on the CNH website, but if you have any questions, then I feel free to ask!

It’s crazy to think that an entire semester of my senior year has almost passed already in the blink of an eye. Of course, things haven’t been the greatest since COVID-19 came around and ruined everybody’s year, but I’d like to think that there were some silver linings and positive notes. Because this is my last year in Key Club, I want to take some time to reflect on focuses and accomplishments, especially for those of you who are new to Key Club and are curious about where you want to go from here. When I first joined, my initial plan was to just work on my service hours and have fun with my friends. I’m sure this is the same case for most of you, although it is unfortunately a lot harder to have fun with friends nowadays when we’re all social distancing. For me, things began to change as I started to involve myself deeper with Key Club and service. It wasn’t just something I had to do, but rather something I wanted to do. I wanted to be a part of this organization and be a leader like so many other amazing people. But in order to do this, I had to put myself out there and step out of my comfort zone. People say that a lot, to “step out of your comfort zone,” but what does this really mean? Normally, you would set expectations for yourself and constantly try to meet them every day. However, this isn’t enough. It isn’t just about meeting your expectations; it’s about surpassing them. If you wish to better yourself, you have to be willing to do more than what you assume you’re capable of. This is not just about Key Club, but about everything you do from now on. If you want to be an officer, you have to get involved and do service and convince yourself that it is worth your time to apply. If you want to be the president, you have to show to yourself and everyone else that you have what it takes, even if you don’t think you can. If you want the juice, you have to tell yourself that you want the juice more than anyone else. To succeed at anything, it’s all about showing up and putting your name in the hat. Even if you show up and don’t get it a hundred times in a row, you still have to keep showing up. Because if you have no names in the hat, how can you expect to be drawn from the hat? You just can’t. So put yourself out there, step out of your comfort zone, and shatter your own expectations of what you think you can do. If you want something, your greatest obstacle will always be yourself. If you can overcome your own self-doubt, you can be an officer or president or even LTG. You can do anything.

Claire Lee | 11 | Project Chair For this thanksgiving, I wanted to take the time to thank my project chair partner Tiffany Ong. With everything becoming virtual, finding events that allow high school students to participate in was one of the hardest tasks personally, and I honestly couldn’t have done the same routine every two weeks if it wasn’t for Tiffany. She continuously reached out and reminded me to find new events for our club members, and I actually had a lot of fun working with her. Although we weren’t close before, this term has brought us so much closer than ever. With the term coming to an end, I’ll definitely miss working with her!!!

Yes, you heard me. Teamwork makes the dream work. As cliché as this quote may sound, I see it all within Key Club, specifically within the one and only OAKC. Just recently, our club participated in the Bags of Hope Project, taking the spotlight as the organization that brought in the most organizations. Thanks to all your donations, low-income families will receive the gift of Christmas joy. This is just one of the many instances where members of Key Club come together to create incredible impact. Whether you write affirmations for 0.25 hours or run 6 hours worth of service, it all boils down to the act of service itself, not the number of hours served. An affirmation brings joy to someone’s day; running donates money to notable charities. And by taking time out of your day to serve, you’re contributing to the change we make as a team within our community. So, this is not me trying to scare or pressure you into serving, but rather, a thank you for choosing to be a part of Key Club and embodying the act of caring: our way of life. I’m incredibly proud of everyone for keeping up the service despite these circumstances. I know that this year is not exactly what we expected, but as I reflect on our growth as a club, I’m very excited to see that we are thriving and will continue to accomplish more as the end of the term approaches. Have a shining month, suns!

This was a wonderful fundraiser put on by the work of our money-handling DLT officers and division executives. As usual, the donations from the baked goods went straight to supporting children through PTP. The preordering process was flexible, allowing people to send in their donations across a multiple week span. I bought three baked goods to support the efforts. Turns out, I didn’t eat any of them, though! I gifted them to three of my senior officers to display some appreciation. The fun came when I delivered the goods myself. I only starting driving this year, but it was absolutely rewarding to spend those 1-2 hours vrooming over to nearby cities. I enjoyed visiting my friends at their homes, and they expressed a lot of gratitude. Some of them didn’t even know that I was the buyer, so it was a pleasant surprise to them! Overall, though, great job by the division, and I hope to encounter more opportunities to spread love while supporting our preferred charities.

For the Bake Sale, my house turned into a whole bakery, but honestly, I wasn’t complaining. I learned about the hardships of fundraising. It was hard. There were certain aspects to running a fundraiser that I didn’t consider, like packaging and organizing orders. Possibly because Jennifer did that portion for the previous fundraiser, but I still made it out alive. Oh, I also don’t have an oven, so that was an odd struggle. Anyways, my fundraising coordinators, along with Daniel and Michelle were cool enough to help, so thank you to them for keeping me sane! Would I do this again? I mean, if I have too, but I definitely would not choose too. Anyways, after I finished, my brother and I ate the leftovers and possibly got diabetes, but that’s okay!

With Thanksgiving day almost upon me, I was grateful to be able to spend some time with other Key Club members during the DCM on Saturday. As per usual with DCM’s, the introduction was just a recap of what happened in the past month as well as updates on what’s happening at the moment. After the division executives presented the updates on the division, we moved onto the icebreaker game Guess Who? which was lead by the Division Spirit Coordinators. Although the game was simple, everyone was still able to participate and bond with each other. After the icebreaker, we were all given time to participate in the service project. We were to write Thanksgiving cards for the elderly and it was definitely a very enjoyable experience to be able to write kind letters towards other people. Overall, the DCM was very entertaining and I’m glad that I was able to spend time with other members in Key Club.
s month, our division council meeting was held on Zoom and was a simple, but fun event! After going ough the agenda of the day for the division council meeting, we interacted with each other through the at. As a division, we met some different roles with the Division Leadership Team and clubs were also e to showcase their different fundraisers during the DCM. By being able to display their fundraisers, mbers were able to see all the fundraisers across the division and support the different clubs. thermore, we participated in an engaging, and interactive icebreaker. The icebreaker was a compilan of brain teasers, riddles and more. By typing in the chat, we were able to answer and respond to the estions. This was a fun way to spend time with the rest of the Division while thinking intelligently and ically. tly, we were able to take part in an interesting service project. The service project was a Thanksgiving d-writing service projects for two different groups of people. We could write and send cards to either erly people or special needs individuals. Personally, I created cards for special needs individuals, and I ated the cards digitally. Normally, I prefer creating cards by hand; however, I wanted to try someng new, so I decided to create digital cards and then printed them out. I was able to be very creative! all, our monthly virtual division council meeting was interactive, engaging, and allowed me to be creae! Though this was simpler and shorter than some of the previous division council meetings, I really oyed this event and felt even better connected to the people in our division. Regardless that it was virl and on Zoom, I enjoyed the event, similarly to the in-person events in the past, and I hope we can ntinue having these fun and enjoyable events.

I am thankful for this club, which continues to surprise and inspire me by proving time and time again the value of hard work and persistence. The Thanksgiving Western Social allowed me to reflect on the value of companionship during these times. I have made many friends from Western last term, so being placed in a room with a couple of them after not seeing them in a while brought me joy. I found myself taken aback during the activities because I also began to realize how the underclassmen are becoming the upperclassmen, and my time being a senior is to the halfway mark for my school calendar, and nearly ¾ of the way accomplished for Key Club. Although I was not a dedicated freshman for Key Club, I found myself loving this club as a field of opportunity for me to develop and grow in, an environment to which I have found nothing quite similar. The Thanksgiving Western Social allowed me this reflection but also allowed me to smile knowing that dedicated people would spend a simple hour out of their day to once again get on a monotonous and mundane Zoom call for the exact same social interactions that are possible under a quarantine, and still be able to make the most out of it. It is outdrawn and repetitive to continue to say these things, but what more is there to say other than expressing gratitude for a force that is unbreakable? Often, I find myself specifically daydreaming the hypotheticals of having this be a normal Key Club year. I think that with this Thanksgiving social, I’ve finally made my peace with myself that this year may be lost through how we normally went about operating, but we did not lose in what we stood for and what we were able to accomplish. These hallmark victory statements are premature, but I feel it is appropriate to begin mentioning them here as we begin the downward spiral of concluding the term.

During the month of November, OAKC hosted a social with Western Key Club. We had overwhelming attendance and participation from both schools and managed to have over 50 attendees for this social. We even managed to have THE Daniel Boulum attend! The social kicked off with a few introductions from officers who led the breakout rooms. Next, volunteers were able to create origami shapes by following videos that were shared on the screen. It was extremely fast-paced and I struggle with just completing one correctly. Luckily, everyone else also struggled so we were able to bond over the same experiences. Continuing on, we were separated into pre-determined breakout rooms to participate in various activities. We created cards, completed a Minecraft-themed escape room, played Scribbl.io, and played Among Us. It was a great way to bond with old and new friends alike and it was a great way to kick start my Thanksgiving Break. Socials are always really enjoyable as they allow you to meet new people and enjoy the company of others while earning service hours. Yay key club!
Tiffany Ong | 11 | Project Chair
This month, OAKC had our first Interclub Social with Clovis North, from the D05N Corgis! It was super fun to meet everybody from Clovis North, especially because I’ve never met them before. Since we usually have socials with schools from our own division, D30S, it was a fresh new experience! Plus, the people from CN are so kind, fun, and so easy to talk to, which made the social so much more fun! :) All the attendees were split up into different breakout rooms, so that we could all bond with each other more. We participated in a really fun activity, created by CN and OA officers! Our goal was to save Jennifer from a witch in a haunted house, and we encountered a bunch of officers throughout the activity too. :’) There were a bunch of hilarious memes and my group was able to bond over them a lot. After the activity, we had time to do a little icebreaker as well! My group played two truths and a lie. I was able to learn a lot about my group and made some new friends too. :) Overall, this social was a great break from my stressful schoolwork and I hope we have a similar social in the near future!

What better way to start off Thanksgiving break than with a fun Key Club social with Western! Not gonna lie, the timing of this social could not have been any better because it was during break, so most people did not have to stress about homework during the social. Not sure if that was the case for everyone, but that was certainly the case for me. The social started off with origami, which was surprisingly difficult, but that’s honestly because I am just not that great at origami. The videos were pretty cool though and I loved how the projects we chose were fall themed. Then we separated into breakout rooms and played a Minecraft escape room online. It was pretty fun, and it was entertaining seeing everyone in my room struggle with some of the questions. We ultimately guessed the answer to like half of the questions, but its ok because at least we won in the end. Then, we all played Among Us and I definitely did not enjoy getting killed in almost every single round, but it’s ok because at least I won at being imposter once. Overall, the social was really fun and definitely a great way to start my Thanksgiving break. Thank you to everyone that planned the social, you guys did great!

The Western x Oxford social went very well. I’m not sure how many times I have written articles about socials, but this social was swell. Completely opposite from the last social, Western is a school we’re really familiar with (reflected by the surprisingly large RSVP number). Also, since it was during break, it was obvious that people were less stressed. Anyways, I’m really glad that we write these articles because it has helped with writing my college applications since it forces me to constantly write reflective things. Grateful!

On Sunday was the Western High X Oxford Academy Social online! My overall experience at this social was amazing but was very sad because it was cut off short and we had less time to play different activities. We played many different activities with the breakout rooms and were able to participate in a service project. The first activity that we did was creating origami. We watched multiple videos of instructions to fold our paper, and it was really fun. After this activity, we broke out into breakout rooms to start our activities. The first thing that we played was Skribblio. I haven’t played this game in so long since quarantine has started, especially because lots of the DCMs and Socials stopped having it because we had it a lot in the beginning of the year. It was great to play with fellow Key Clubbers and we laughed and talked with each other. The second activity in the breakout rooms was Among Us. Unfortunately we were only able to play one game and the game we played had glitches, but it was still very fun to play. Among Us has been a popular game that has popped up in lots of streamers as well as students and children. The popularity of this app has brought so many ideas and activities for people to play. It has allowed us Key Clubbers to bond with each other during socials and DCMs. New themed DCMS, socials, and bonding events were created to fit the Among Us style, and people were able to make friends playing this. It is great how a game has brought people together in Key Club events. The last activity that we participated in was a Minecraft Escape Room. We had to solve pretty simple questions that were Minecraft themed, as well as a Morse code question. It was really cool to be able to work together with those in my breakout room in order to “escape” the room. This social was really fun and it was great to be able to make new friends. I think more of you guys should attend socials and DCMs, because you can make new friends as well as play fun activities!!
