President’s Corner Hello Sunshines!
W
ith just a few short days before we head back to school, I hope you cherish what little time we have left of this summer. I’ll definitely miss not having to wake up at 6:30am, but I’m glad to have had a well-deserved break from school spent with my family and friends.
But just because summer is ending doesn’t mean that Key Club is!! Club Rush will be coming up in a month or so, so be sure to stop by our booth for some pins and merchandise and sign up so that you can stay updated with all the the fun events we have planned for you this year! Other things to look forward to are the Regional Training Conference in October, where you’ll meet Key Clubbers from across Orange County and have the opportunity to develop your skills as a leader, and Fall Rally, where over 8000 Key Clubbers gather at Six Flags Magic Mountain to celebrate the term and fundraise money for the Pediatric Trauma program. I hope to see you all there!

Editor’s Note Heyo Guy and Gals! I hope you all enjoyed this year’s summer just as much as I did, since for many people including myself, this following year will be a year where lives will be changed, careers will be selected and where fantastic people (aka the seniors) will be leaving us right after their final curtain in May of 2018. It really is amazing on how time flies, especially since I remember myself just being a 7th grader just yesterday. I feel like I’m still a kid in a teen’s body, and even though I don’t want to “grow up” in a sense, we all need to do so before we can enact real change, real results. This is what I feel most seniors have found out, and is what Key Club has taught me in the past year. It’s told me about various ways of life, from working silently on paperwork and magazines, to becoming a socialite at DCMs, and to serving others with a smile. It’s all connected, really, but it requires yourself to be outgoing and driven, or else you won’t be able to sincerely be able to enjoy life to the fullest. There’s so many people to help, so many things to do, but so little time. So I remind all those who read, don’t waste it, since great friends and great people won’t come to you; it is you who needs to come and meet them. Sincerely, Jeremie

O
ur first social of the term was a huge success! Together with members from Western Key Club, OAKC’ers arrived at Huntington State Beach bright and early for a day of food, fun, and service. We started off with some simple icebreakers to get to know each other and share laughs and fun before splitting off into several different groups for a competition. Each team then spread out across the beach, combing through the sand

for any trash and gathering into bags. After an hour of hard work, we all returned to our tower for more fun and games to determine the order we would get lunch in. Sooner or later, we were all biting into delicious hot dogs and sweet watermelon slices, and cooling off in the ocean after that was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Concert On The Green: Summer ‘17

ince the concerts on the green are a weekly event during the summer, this wasn’t my first time attending, but it was just as fun and memorable as before. At the concerts, our club mainly helps with the food stand organized by our sponsoring Kiwanis, the Kiwanis Club of Cypress. At the booth, all of the volunteers divvy up the tasks from putting hamburger and hot dog buns on the trays, to managing the hamburger and hot dog meat, to refilling the condiments and chips when necessary. Overall, it’s a very chill event but it’s still satisfying to go to when you see all of the customer’s smiles and how involved the Cypress Community truly is. This time I got to work with the meat and dealing out the orders, which was the first time I’ve gotten to do so. For me it was just a small glimpse at was customer service is like, since I had to make sure that I was listening correctly, that I worked fast, and that we were providing the quality food that they paid for. Overall going to the Concert on the Green this July was definitely a pleasant experience for me as I was able to catch up with friends that I hadn’t seen all summer long and help my community at the same time!

his month I had participated in the Concert on the Green Volunteering event which was led by the Cypress Kiwanis Club at the Cypress Recreational Center. This event really stood out to

me, because I was really able to see the community come together and work hard to give back to the people that lived there. I was in charge of the food stand, which I had helped set up and grill the meat which people brought in case they got hungry during the concert. I was really
surprised about how many people attended this event, because I honestly never really thought that community events were that popular among Cypress residents. Seeing the involvement in this concert had really had me thinking that every time I volunteer, I do make a difference be-
cause so many people get to enjoy events that I help plan and create and work at. This made me feel more inclined to be active in volunteering and to find different ways to give back to Cypress.

More Concert On

hroughout this month I’ve been chairing Concert on the Green. I’ve been leaving my house some minutes before 4 and once I arrive at the Cypress Civic Center, I start to volunteer! Concert on the Green takes place every Saturday from 4:00 – 8:00pm. During that time, there are different tasks you are given. A possible task you’d be given with two or three other people would be to “unpack” the bread and place them on small food trays. You’ll keep doing it as people come and buy their food. Another possible task that you can be given is to get the meat that’s been cooked from a container and place them on the buns that are on the small food trays. Also, you might be in charge of the condiments. You would get the lettuce, pickles, etc. out of the bags and put them on small food trays. You would then just basically keep the tables clean

and organized and you would refill the trays of condiments when needed. Sometimes you would have to change the small food trays for new ones. Finally, you could also be in charge of the drinks. After people would pay, you would give them the drink that they want. You would then just sit and wait for people to come and buy a drink. Pretty easy. Though four hours might seem long, you get to see and listen to the concert. Not only do you enjoy the concert but you get food and chips along with it. Every concert is different from the previous one and they’re interesting to watch.

BEACH BOOMBA!
Summer ‘17

his year was my first time going to Beach Boomba since I joined three years ago and I have to say that it was a wonderful experience. I wasn’t expecting much, but this event really had been one of the best events we’ve had so far. We played a lot of different icebreakers which really helped in getting to know everyone from our region. Following the icebreakers were fun activities such as a beach volleyball tournament, water games, and pieing the LTGs. The most enjoyable event for me were the water games, especially since it was excruciatingly hot that day. Despite this, it was also great to just relax in the summer breeze or splash in the waves. Although the By Anna Phan I Web Editor sand felt like actual lava, from free snacks, fun activities, quality bonding, and a fine summer day at the beach, Beach Boomba is definitely something everyone should go to. I hope that you found this article useful and hope to see you come and participate in more Key Club events!

ello everyone! School is rapidly approaching, but that doesn't mean that there aren't some great volunteering opportunities. Speaking of great volunteering opportunities, one of the main events for all the divisions was the July DCM: Beach Boomba. Beach Boomba was located at Huntington Beach and was an eye-opening event that was filled with ice breakers, competitions, and of course, the amazing view of the ocean water. Some icebreakers that were played were "I love my neighbor who‌" and also one the the classics, " Poncho number‌". These were both great ways to meet other fellow key clubbers not only from Oxford Academy, but from other participating schools at Beach Boomba. Competitions had include the watermelon eating contest which had the participants stuffed with whole slices of watermelon and viewers cheering on each participant. And of course, there was a beach volleyball competitions with teams of 9. At the end of Beach Boomba, there was the highly anticipated pieing of the LTGs from each division. To pie an LTG, it costed $1. Overall, it was an amazing experience and a well-planned DCM event.
