Hi Oxford Key Clubbers! If you’re reading this, congratulations! You’ve found out where I’ve hidden, here in my corner, dubbed as the President’s Corner where I’ll share with you my thoughts and highly classified updates on the club. DCON 2k15 was about three weeks ago, meaning that spelled the end of my term as secretary, and the end of Nicolas’s term as President. With that, I am so excited to be your new President for the 2015-2016 term! We already have tons of great things planned for everyone!
Other than through MailChimps and brief personal e-mails, we haven’t really gotten to know each other so here’s a few fun facts about me: Favorite color: Blue. Favorite movie: Theory of Everything. Favorite food: Pizza Hut cheese stuffed crust with the special Pizza Hut crust, garlic parmesan sauce, ham, pepperoni, pineapple, and a nice drizzle of BBQ sauce on top. Favorite place: Taco Bell. I live, breathe, and dream of track and field. Chocolate and ice cream is actually my life (but I don’t like chocolate ice cream. I’ll eat it but I’m not really into it). I love Yogurtland. I just really like desserts in general.
So some of you may be wondering: What am I going to do as your President? -plan interclub bonding events (already in the process!) -plan our own club events -give members a better chance to take up leadership in Key Club by creating club committees -plan more bonding events for our own club -any other suggestions you all have! (let me know by messaging or emailing me at emilyyxhuynh@gmail.com!)

Editor’s Letter! Hi y’all! Hope you had a wonderful spring break! My name is Jennifer La, and I am officially your new Bulletin Editor for the 2015-2016 term. Last year, John Hoang, current Lieutenant Governor, was your bulletin editor, and he did wonders to update the monthly newsletters. Since this is my first newsletter, here is some facts about myself: I am currently a sophomore, and I am quirky. Honestly, I have no idea how to do this difficult job, but this experience will be worthwhile. For this term, I want to show everyone my true potential, hoping to meet up to the expectations of previous bulletin editors. Though this newsletters may not be the greatest, I will strive to improve on them and shine bright! To properly introduce myself, I feel that it is best to get to know little random facts about me: -I am involved in various extracurricular activities such as Key Club (obviously :D), Sophomore Class Committee, VSA, Red Cross, and NHS… so you probably seen me around school. -I love to socialize and meet new people so they can feel right at home! -I am in love with food and candy! So if you have some, gimme gimme! -Random Fact of the Month!: I am generally a quiet person at first, but once you get to know me, I AM WILD!~ After getting a taste of my personality, in this newsletter, it consists of articles from the new bee-you-tiful board members, monthly calendar, updates, and pictures! Women’s Club of Cypress Tea Vivian Luong, Historian This past Saturday, I chaired my first event EVER. The Women’s Club of Cypress Tea Party is definitely my favorite event now. However, it didn’t have a very good start. I was running late to the event because I came from somewhere else. The event started at 11:00 and I came scurrying in at 11:08. Right when I came in, I saw the other Key Club members staring at me, and not too happily either. As they walked towards me, dressed in their clean white tops, black bottoms, and neat ties, I realized I’d made a horrible mistake. Because I was in such a hurry, I was completely out of dress code. Rather than wearing my black pencil skirt and white blouse, I was wearing blue skinny jeans and my Oxford Academy spirit T-shirt. I knew my mistake was obvious because one of the members pointed it out to me right away. All these people probably think I’m a horrible board member now, I thought. How could I be so irresponsible? Luckily, my mom was able to drop off my clothes 30 minutes into the event. Besides this embarrassing and careless mistake I made, the event was a success! All the volunteers were kept busy and were smiling. All the members I asked said they genuinely enjoyed the event, just like I did. The Women's Club of Cypress Tea Party was a cute event filled with large trays of deserts and finger sandwiches, women with colorful dresses of various prints, and a spirited, jazzy singer. Key Club volunteers did tasks ranging from pouring hot water to serving cookies and cranberry finger sandwiches to beautiful, elegant women. I was utterly impressed with how our members gracefully served the women as they smiled and made small talk with them. I couldn’t have been prouder of our members! As for me, I was having a wonderful time. I was assigned a table to serve and was told to work with the table’s hostess, a beautiful and kind woman named Pauline. I served Pauline and her table as best as I could. Despite my rather clumsy nature, I managed to do well and not drop any of the beautiful teapots, plastic trays, and glass pitchers. Throughout the event, I smiled as widely as I could, to the point that the corners of my mouth were to my ears. And unlike at some other events, this smile was genuine. I was having the time of my life! I’ve always loved helping children and the elderly the most. The most fun part of the event was definitely when all us volunteers were told to dance in front of the women. The very talented singer asked us to line up and follow his lead. We all giggled as we tried to keep up with the hip-shaking, foot-tapping man. All the women laughed and applauded, especially when all the girl volunteers were told to show sass when dancing. Even though this was the most fun part of the event, it definitely was my FAVORITE part. The part of the event I will always remember is the eloquent speech one of the advisors delivered to us. “All the women really appreciate what you’ve done for them,” she explained. “You know you guys made their day? Tea parties like this is basically what their life is, and it means a lot to them that you guys were a part of it.” I was really surprised to hear how much the advisors and women appreciated our work. Times like these truly remind you why you should ALWAYS volunteer in your community. As all us volunteers assisted with cleaning up, several women said remarks like “Thank you!” or “We really appreciate your hard work!” The “thank you” that meant the most to me, though, was Pauline’s, who became a little teary eyed. I assured her I would come back next year. As a parting and thank you gift, she handed me a fake red rose that rested on the table she sipped her tea at.
When you think of me, I’m pretty sure that you wouldn’t think of a person who’d sign up to be a part of a silly tea party. I mean look at me. I obviously (?) don’t look like the type who’d play dress up and force feed my dolls liquid vegetables. However, I initially signed up for the Women’s Club of Cypress Tea because I thought it would be a great event for taking pictures. But when I got there, I realized that I was really wrong. It was so much more than an event for taking pictures, it was an event in which I felt that I was contributing to a greater good. When I got there, I was one of the very few men there, and I thought it was really strange. But, after finding a place for myself amongst the plethora of classy ladies, I felt welcomed as a minority gender. The event was great because the people there were welcoming, and they event acknowledged the hard work of the volunteers! We constantly got thanked and got rewarded with free food, albeit some of them were a little strange (I’m looking at you Cranberry Turkey Sandwich). My favorite part of the event was when they brought up all the volunteers to the front and taught them how to dance. You know it’s a good event when we can put a little bit of booty into our service! Overall, I felt that it was a great event, and would highly recommend it for the future.

After a long, strenuous day at school, a group of benevolent keyclubbers decided against going home to sleep by staying after school to help out Oxford at the home track meet. On Tuesday, March 10 and Thursday , March 19, the big-hearted volunteers worked their butts off and I have the bruises on my leg to prove it– while the Oxford athletes ran their hearts out against Magnolia and Whitney. Among those athletes was our very own OAKC President, track star Emily Huynh! While the athletes were competing, the volunteers stayed several hours after school ended, assisting with the track meet in the blazing SUN! Volunteers were split up with different tasks, ranging from assisting with hurdles and blocks. Some of us pushed a cart with blocks around the track from event to event, while others personally helped the athletes by standing on their blocks. Volunteering at the track meet was a valuable experience and worth staying after school late because we got so see from a close perspective how much work went into being an athlete while supporting our fellow Patriots! Who wouldn’t want to earn volunteer hours while supporting our school?

The new term has now OFFICIALLY started and I am stoked to be serving as your Vice President for your 2015-2016 term. I cannot express how excited I am to begin the year and how honored I am to be serving such a wonderful club. Plans for the year? Well, that is simple. The plan of action is to get closer as a club. There is nothing better than to just grow closer as a club. Key Club is going to be our second FAMILY, and if I fail to do that throughout the year, please tell me but ohana means family, and no one gets left behind on our journey to a sunstatistic year. I have to admit that it is pretty weird assuming new responsibilities in the club and increasing my role. As a result, this only makes me want to work harder to satisfy all of your needs and desires (do not take the wrong way). Well, that is it for me this time around. Hope you all have a wonderful and keep shining on. VP out.

As the Project chair, I have realized that we are like the hinges between trains and cable lines between computers and I phones (Not sure if that makes much sense). There is a lot of responsibility that falls on us which also makes me strive to be a better Project Chair and motivates me to improve upon myself. As Project Chair, we are responsible for connecting with the community as Key Club so that not every one of our members has to email and call people in order to volunteer. As a “newbie,� my couple weeks as the new role has been a little challenging and confusing in the sense that I, in times, get lost in what to do. It seems that there are a million things going around from the google calendar I have to update, emails I have to send, and to signups I have to make. Although I have experienced many duties that I were confused and lost with, the Key Club members were always there to help me. Alvin is a great partner of mine. He is always willing to help, which is why he is the first source of help for me. Everyone in executive board is always enthusiastic and more than willing to support and aid in whatever I need. Also, John is a great mentor that keeps me up-to-date in what I have to do and will be doing in the future. Through this new position that I am honored of serving, I have met many great new people and am already starting to learn many things. I hope to continue learning so that in the future I can be of benefit to this wonderful club.

DCON 2K15 | Emily Hunyh, President YAY! DCON 2015 was one of the more memorable DCONS (out of the two anyways). Despite the fact that I came late due to a really great track meet, DCON was still a time to remember. Thankfully I didn’t have to go to any workshops—instead I went to House of Delegates and caucus sessions to vote on our next DSec, DTreasurer, and DGov with my IP Nicolas. Even though I slept through a good portion of them it was great getting to know the candidates.

Fast forward to the last day of DCON, at the last general session (because that’s when everybody starts crying). When DGov Jacqueline said that we were officially retired, I felt my heart drop because it spelled the end of filling out MRFs, compiling ORFs and articles and dealing with others’ silly mistakes. It also spelled the end of kind of my Key Club “childhood.” About 5 minutes after, I was installed as OAKC’s next President.

To be quite honest, I felt scared, a mixture of scared, excited, and apprehensive. At that moment I became in charge of more than 200 members, but at the same time, the most wonderful club in the whole world. Although I begin this term less-than-confident just like last term, I know that things will go fantastic, especially with my super duper amazing board :)).
