Welcome to Metamorphosis!

OSA and the Greater Oakland Community,

As a proud alumna of OSA, it is my absolute honor to participate in tonight’s extraordinary event. Your presence here not only celebrates the artistic journey of our students, but reaffirms the vibrant and revolutionary spirit of our beloved city. I am deeply moved by the unity, passion, and talent that fills this room. Thank you for supporting our students, teachers, and staff with your presence. Their passion and dedication to their art and to this school changes lives. Let us embark on this journey together as we honor the past, embrace the present, and envision the future. Welcome to Metamorphosis!

Safia

OSA Board Chair, Class of 2011

OSA and the Greater Oakland Community,

It is my absolute honor to welcome you all to tonight’s show, Metamorphosis. This is OSA’s first show of this scale since 2019 and it goes without saying that the world has gone through significant transformation since that time. Community events like this, generated in the name of artistic expression, are needed now more than ever. Since 2002, OSA has been unwavering in putting art first with the understanding that it is both a powerful vehicle for societal change and for the transformative journey of our students. We appreciate you endlessly for supporting this vision by being here tonight. With 22 years now behind us and thousands of OSA graduates to celebrate, I have zero doubt in the importance of this work: past, present and future. I humbly thank you all for showing up tonight for our students, for Oakland, and for the arts!

Enjoy the show, Mike Oz, Executive Director

About the Metamorphosis Theme and Designer

Oakland School for the Arts’ theme for the 2023 to 2024 academic year has been Metamorphosis. Together this year, we have explored themes of transformation, evolution, growth, and the natural generative process that is inherent in all aspects of life, creativity, academics, and the arts. As with the Metamorphosis process, our work this year divided into four main phases: Generate, Expand, Transform, and Blossom.

OSA’s Metamorphosis brand was designed by Hana Walker Pettigrew, an 11th grade student in our Visual Arts Pathway, out of a school-wide call for designs. Hana’s design is compelling, inventive, and speaks to the process of growth and transformation that our school-wide theme embodies.

Hana has shared that she has always been confident in her art and “the OSA community has nurtured it by providing the opportunity to learn about the many different styles of art and how we can use art to tell stories and express ourselves.”

When Hana was asked what Metamorphosis meant to her and how she interpreted it in her design, she shared, “When sketching out my design, I didn’t want to do the traditional caterpillar to butterfly and I wanted there to be some kind of movement in this altogether static image. My interpretation of Metamorphosis was ‘growth and change,’ so I represented that in my design by starting with a small and reserved flower bud sprouting from nurturing hands that then grew into a lively blossom.”

Hana’s design has been broadly used this year including in billboard advertisements and apparel. Limited-edition Metamorphosis apparel is available in the Fox Theater lobby for sale. Profits from sales go to the artist.

About OSA

OSA MISSION

Oakland School for the Arts prepares its graduates for college and career in their chosen field through specialized and innovative arts education, inspiring students to shape the world with their unique and powerful voices.

OSA VISION

To give the world generations of innovative problem-solvers, creative thinkers, authentic leaders, and ground-breaking artists, all of whom contribute to the local and global communities, demonstrating the essential value of the arts in all that they do.

WHO WE ARE

OSA welcomes students from Oakland and beyond to our unique, vibrant, and diverse community of artists and activists. We are their second home, their place to explore who they are and who they want to be.

We are a tuition-free public charter school located in the Uptown Oakland neighborhood and anchored in the historic Fox Theater Building. We opened our doors in 2002 and currently serve nearly 800 students in grades 6 to 12 with 114 staff members of which 74 are faculty members.

4 | Oakland School for the Arts

Our arts faculty members are all professional, practicing artists deeply engaged in their respective artistic communities. Our curriculum revolves around integration, both between academic subjects and with the arts, providing students unique opportunities for learning, expression, innovation, and personal growth.

EACH OF OUR STUDENTS SELECTS AND STUDY IN ONE OF 10 ARTS AND CAREER PATHWAYS:

Media Arts

Production Design

Instrumental Music

Audio Production and Engineering

OSA’s budget and investment in our students is comparable to most other public schools in California, with 83% of our funding from state and federal grants and contracts and 17% from contributions for our innovative arts and academic education. This budget includes providing free after-school arts education to OUSD students in Title 1 schools through our Step it Up Program. With a longer school day for high school to integrate the arts, our arts program costs exceed $4 million annually.

How You Can Help

At OSA, art is not optional. To fund this, and other programs like student wellness, we rely on the community and their generosity to make up 17% of our operating budget. We are so grateful to the many OSA families and staff, businesses, foundations, and individuals who contribute every year to invest in the power of an innovative arts education.

Every student at OSA has their own metamorphosis story—with the support of OSA’s stellar faculty, their dynamic peers, and donors like you—they can grow into the fullness of their self expression.

Please consider making a contribution to OSA.

Artist Impact Awards

Oakland School for the Arts is proud to present the 1st annual Artist Impact Awards at Metamorphosis.

Oakland has a rich history of impactful artists making this selection process both challenging and rewarding. A panel composed of many influential, dedicated and talented artists convened to make nominations and selections based on the following criteria:

1. Impact on Oakland

2. Community Minded

3. Direct Impact on Oakland Youth

4. National Impact

5. Artistic Impact

After reviewing a short list of nearly 25 nominees, the review panel agreed upon the following artists to receive OSA’s first annual Oakland Artist Impact Awards:

Zendaya Coleman

Zendaya is an American actress and singer. She has received various accolades, including two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2022. Born and raised in Oakland, Zendaya attended Oakland School for the Arts.

Sheila E. Escovedo

Sheila E. was born in Oakland and is the daughter of Juanita Gardere and percussionist Pete Escovedo, with whom she frequently performs. She began her career in the mid-1970s as a percussionist for the George Duke Band. After separating from the group in 1983, Sheila began collaborating with Prince and launched a solo career, starting with the release of her

8 | Oakland School for the Arts

debut album in 1984, which included her biggest hit “The Glamorous Life.” She is often referred to as the “Queen of Percussion.”

Conor (Angus Cloud) Hickey

Conor (Angus Cloud) Hickey was an American actor. He was best known for his portrayal of Fezco in the HBO drama series Euphoria (2019–2022). He also had roles in the independent films North Hollywood (2021) and The Line (2023), and appeared in music videos by Noah Cyrus, Juice Wrld, Becky G, and Karol G. Conor was raised in Oakland and attended Oakland School for the Arts from 7th grade through graduation. He was a student in Instrumental Music and Media Arts, before graduating from Production Design.

Keith (K-Dub) Williams

K-Dub is an artist, teacher, community leader, father, mentor, and Godfather of the Oakland skatepark scene. He is the founder of Oakland’s first official skatepark, Town Park. He has a long legacy of uplifting Oakland youth through community events. It all began in 2005 when K-Dub started his own version of the X Games. Tha Hood Games represented a new kind of diversity in skateboarding. It combined all the elements of hip hop: music, art, fashion, and graffiti. For decades as a teacher and community advocate, K-Dub has mentored hundreds of Oakland youth to shine their brightest. Conor (Angus Cloud) Hickey was once one of his mentees.

We are so proud of this year’s awardees who effectively represent decades of Oakland artistic impact and their role in this important work is greatly appreciated.
