LETTER FROM OSA’S

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear OSA Friends,

This year, OSA’s theme was “Metamorphosis.” Together, we explored ideas around transformation, evolution, growth, and the natural generative process that is inherent in all aspects of life, creativity, academics, and the arts.

We also invited students in their academic and arts classes to reflect on their own metamorphosis as scholars and artists and on how arts training is shaping their growth and journey. Students focused on the artistic process and not just the artistic product.

Your support made so much possible this year, including our first all-school performance since 2019, which was held in the iconic Fox Theater in April. The show, “Metamorphosis,” featured a dynamic range of student work from all 10 Arts Pathways and nearly 1800 attended to support our students.

Other achievements from 2023–24 that we are proud to share with you include:

• Our students produced 50-plus performances, exhibits, and shows during the school year;

• Each of our 97 seniors, many of whom began OSA during remote learning their first year of high school, graduated this year;

• We added much-needed space for our theater classrooms and performance space with the Sweet’s Ballroom on Broadway in downtown Oakland;

• We were recognized for double-digit academic performance increases on statewide testing among our Latinx students from the 22-23 school year;

• We partnered on the Oakland Works Wednesday initiative, providing daytime student performances across downtown; and

• We presented the first annual Oakland Artist Impact Award to four influential artists with Oakland roots.

For our students, the arts are more than an interest or a hobby. They are a lifeline to success, confidence, and selfrealization that is central to their identity. With 22 years now behind us at OSA, we have clear confirmation of what we always believed to be true: OSA’s program builds the foundation for our graduates to enter the career path of their choosing, positioned for success as innovators and changemakers.

Thank you for your belief in the difference an arts education can make in the life of a child and for supporting our school in the heart of downtown Oakland. We are so grateful for your support!

In gratitude,

LETTER FROM OSA’S BOARD CHAIR

Dear Supporters and Friends,

This year, our theme of “Metamorphosis” invited students and staff to reflect on their evolving academic and artistic journeys. We extended this invitation to our community, culminating in a sold-out, all-school performance at the Fox Theater. The showcase was a testament to the passion, unity, and exceptional talent within our ten Arts Pathways.

As we delve into the Metamorphosis theme, we honor our past, celebrate the present, and envision the future. Reflecting on my own experience as an OSA student in Instrumental Music, I am reminded of how the dedication, creativity, and discipline I developed here continue to resonate in every arts pathway today. These foundational skills have been invaluable throughout my life and career, and they echo the vibrant, revolutionary spirit of Oakland.

In the present, I am honored to serve as the inaugural alumni board member and current board chair. Walking the same halls as a board member that I once roamed as a student connects me deeply to OSA’s legacy. I cherish the memories of rehearsing for performances at the Fox Theater—the very stage where I graduated. My pride as an OSA alumna and Oakland native is profound, and I am grateful for our role as a vital community anchor in downtown Oakland.

Looking to the future, I invite you to continue your support and belief in our school. Arts education has the power to transform lives, providing students with the skills and passion they will carry into their future careers. We are enthusiastic about the path ahead and deeply appreciate your ongoing support.

Thank you for being an essential part of our journey.

METAMORPHOSIS

After too long away from live performances, OSA hosted an incredible all-school showcase, METAMORPHOSIS. The evening provided a dynamic range of student work from each of OSA’s 10 Arts Pathways and highlighted themes of transformation, evolution, growth, and the natural generative process that is inherent in all aspects of life, creativity, and the arts.

Throughout the evening, the audience journeyed through the four stages of Metamorphosis via a uniquely designed curation of dance,

vocal, instrumental, and theater performances coupled with multi-media collaborations among our production design, visual art, media arts, literary arts, fashion design, and audio production and engineering pathways. Together, we explored personal and community transformation stories as we celebrated our school’s return to the historic Fox Theater and the center of Oakland’s Uptown art scene.

Before the show, many

OSA supporters gathered in The Den at the Fox Theater for a pre-party to catch up with friends and enjoy the music of OSA alumna and singer-songwriter, Satya.
The Metamorphosis brand was designed by Hana Walker Pettigrew, a junior in our Visual Arts Pathway, out of a school-wide call for designs.

ARTIST IMPACT AWARDS

At Metamorphosis, OSA partnered with the City of Oakland to present the first annual Oakland Artist Impact Awards. We were proud to honor four immensely talented artists for their contributions to the arts that reach far beyond the Bay Area and exemplify the spirit of Oakland through the arts. A panel of many influential, dedicated and talented artists convened to make nominations and selections based on 1) Impact on Oakland; 2) Community mindedness; 3) Direct impact on Oakland youth; 4) National impact; and 5) Artistic impact.

Zendaya Coleman

Zendaya is an American actress and singer, who has starred in films including Dune, Dune: Part Two, and Challengers. She has received two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe award for her role in the series Euphoria. Born and raised in Oakland, Zendaya attended OSA.

Sheila E . Escovedo

Sheila E. was born in Oakland and began her career in the mid-1970s as a percussionist for the George Duke Band. In 1983, Sheila began collaborating with Prince and launched her solo career, releasing her debut album in 1984, which included her breakout hit “The Glamorous Life.”

Conor (Angus Cloud) Hickey

Conor (Angus Cloud) Hickey was an American actor. He was best known for his portrayal of Fezco in the HBO drama series Euphoria (2019-2022). He also had roles in independent films and appeared in music videos by Noah Cyrus, Juice Wrld, Becky G, and Karol G. Conor was raised in Oakland and graduated from OSA.

Keith (K-Dub) Williams

K-Dub is an artist, teacher, community leader, father, mentor, and Godfather of the Oakland skate park scene. He is the founder of Oakland’s first official skate park, Town Park. In 2005, he started his own version of the X Games. The Hood Games represented a new kind of diversity in skateboarding, combining the elements of hip hop music, art, fashion, and graffiti.

OSA MISSION

To prepare graduates for success in their chosen field through inclusive and innovative arts education, inspiring a diverse student body to shape the world with their unique and powerful voices.

OSA VISION

To give the world generations of innovative problem solvers, creative thinkers, authentic leaders, and ground-breaking artists, all of whom contribute to the local and global communities, demonstrating the essential value of the arts in all that they do.

OSA UPTOWN ART PARK

OSA has acquired a lease on the one-acre vacant parcel at the corner of Telegraph Avenue and 19th Street. Working with Oakland Roots & Soul, Skate Like A Girl, the City of Oakland, and many business and community leaders in Oakland, we are ready to move from lease, design, and permitting, to shovel-in-the-ground action.

OSA’s goal is to close the nature gap and to provide a safe and accessible green space for Oakland youth in what is otherwise an empty lot of concrete and asphalt. OSA will activate the park by day during the school year and other mission-driven youth programs will activate the park in the evenings, on weekends, and in the summertime.

The OSA Uptown Art Park is an extension of OSA’s student wellness work as it will provide a recreational outlet and artistic space for students to safely gather outside of their classrooms to regroup, to engage with their peers, and to enjoy the outdoors in the heart of Oakland.

We will begin phase one of the project in 2024, once funded . For more information on the OSA Uptown Art Park, visit our ISSUU page at issuu .com/oakarts .

CLOUD PARK:

The portion of the park facing Telegraph Avenue will be called Cloud Park (named after OSA alumnus Angus Cloud), with a strategic focus on uplifting positive youth activities, with a skate park, performance stage, and mural wall.

ANNUAL FUND

The Annual Fund provides support that is critical to an OSA education . At OSA, 83% of our funding comes from state and federal grants and contracts . We rely on contributions to fund the remaining 17% of our budget, which supports our innovative arts education . With a longer school day for high school to integrate the arts, our arts program costs exceed $4 million annually . Donations to the Annual Fund directly fund OSA arts programs, arts faculty, technology, facility maintenance and upgrades, as well as special programs .

PARTNER HIGHLIGHTS

A long-time supporter of OSA’s arts education mission, the Crankstart Foundation increased its grant to the President’s Circle level in OSA’s year of “Metamorphosis.”

The Foundation’s generous gift to support OSA’s general operations came at a critical time to enable OSA to bolster teacher compensation, maintain our historic facilities in Uptown Oakland, and continue to provide a world-class, tuition-free arts education to each of the 800 public school students enrolled at the school.

Mike Oz, OSA’s Executive Director, expressed his gratitude for the Foundation’s vital gift, “Because of forwardthinking philanthropic leaders like the Crankstart Foundation, OSA is what it is today—a beacon of excellence in arts education in the heart of Oakland.”

It is due to partners like the Crankstart Foundation that Oakland and Bay Area middle and high school students can experience an immersive, project-based, arts curriculum each and every day. In a time when public funding for the arts in schools nationwide is dwindling, support from foundations, corporate sponsors, and individuals is ensuring that OSA’s students continue to sing, perform, act, and create. Gifts like those from the Crankstart Foundation help our students to graduate and go on to thrive in the arts, sciences, business, nonprofit world, or wherever they choose.

The San Francisco Symphony is a vital collaborative partner of OSA, with a focus on supporting students in its music pathways. In addition to providing symphony tickets, access to master classes and rehearsals, and instruments for students, the SF Symphony also supports music instruction in OSA’s signature outreach program, Step it Up. Through Step it Up, OSA provides after-school arts education to students attending Title I schools in Oakland that lack arts programming. Each year, Oakland students in grades 5-8 that are interested in applying to OSA, spend 11 weeks learning from professional artists and musicians.

In the 2023-24 school year, the SF Symphony also sponsored scholarships for young musicians to attend OSA’s Summer Arts Academy, ensuring that they continue to build their skills over the summer and are more prepared to thrive in their arts pathway at the beginning of the school year. OSA is grateful to the SF Symphony for its ongoing support and partnership to uplift the next generation of Bay Area musicians.

COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES

Congratulations to the Class of 2024! The following is a list of colleges and universities where OSA graduates were accepted. OSA’s Class of 2024 graduation rate is 98%. Of this graduating class, 86% will be attending 2- or 4-year post-secondary programs, while others will take a gap year or enter the workforce. 100% of students who chose to apply to postsecondary programs received acceptance letters.
