here’s something about a beautiful, capable woman sitting behind the wheel of a performance machine that really revs one’s engine. For example, our Hottie of the Week, Chastity Anne Feather, has always been into cars. The way she tells it, her dad, who had a fascination with old school Toyotas and bagged mini-trucks in the ’80s, passed that affinity for engines and cars on to her. As a result, Chastity, who’s first car was a 1992 EG Civic hatchback, has enjoyed pushing the limits from behind the wheel. And that makes this racer girl one really evil chick. My introduction to her insane ride came while listening to the throaty growl of her 2006 Mitsubishi Evolution IX as it made its way up a spiraling parking ramp in Honolulu. As she rolled up to me, my attention was immediately brought to her license plate — “EVL-CHK” — and my first thought was, “This girl means business.” Chastity’s fiancé, Courtney Berang, gifted this Evo to her shortly after the two began dating, and they have since formed a bond that revolves around it. “It all started off with the blow-off valve,” says Chastity, who possesses a serious competitive streak. “When we’d go on cruises, there were cars that were keeping up with me. “I didn’t like that.” And apparently, that’s when all the trouble started.

Tuning cars can sometimes be an explosive experience. After achieving dyno numbers of over 300HP, the Evo dropped a valve. For automotive enthusiasts, this is just an excuse to go bigger and badder. Sonic Motorsports swapped out the block and then sourced a GT35R turbo among many other mods. The car was re-tuned by Chris of AMS Performance and now pushes out 529AWHP and 420WTQ on a stock block with pump gas. When you factor in the AWD, that is a serious amount of power — power that Chastity absolutely loves. After hearing the power numbers, my first inclination was to ask how guys felt after getting their rears handed to them by a racer chick.

W
hen Tito Ortiz steps into the Octagon for what likely will be his last fight July 7, he will do so with a sense of closure. Before his fight with Forrest Griffin that night at UFC 148, Ortiz is scheduled to become the ninth person inducted into the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Hall of Fame. “Being inducted into the Hall of Fame, I’m very grateful to (UFC president) Dana (White) and (UFC owner) Lorenzo Fertitta for presenting this to me,” said Ortiz, 37. “I think it’s just a qualification, just showing the hard work and dedication I put into MMA and the UFC, that I’ve grown and become the person I am today, and I’m thankful for it.” Ortiz, one of the first breakout stars of the UFC when current owner Zuffa LLC purchased the company more than a decade ago, experienced both the highs and lows as a professional athlete. Ortiz took part in a public war of words with White, which was scheduled to culminate in a three-round boxing exhibition. The match never materialized, but the sentiment behind the battle over money lingered for many years. The duo reconciled, and Ortiz resumed his place as one of the fan favorites in the promotion. “Tito’s been a pain in my (butt), but a big star for the UFC,” White said. “He was really, if you look at the Zuffa era, our first big star. If you look at all the stuff between me and Tito throughout our career, it was one of those things where you couldn’t write a better script the way that it all played out and the way it all went down. We had some big battles with each other, but it was all part of the history of the UFC.” Ortiz, who made his professional debut at UFC 13 in 1997, enjoyed early success in the promotion. He won the UFC light heavyweight championship in 2000 and successfully defended the belt five times before he lost it to Randy Couture in 2003.
Ortiz, who’ll be inducted into Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Hall of Fame, tangles with Forrest Griffin one last time In UFC 148 July 7. The fighters split their previous two encounters in the ring.
The injuries coincided with a fivefight winless streak for Ortiz that began with the second loss to Liddell in 2006. He finally rebounded after his neck surgery to defeat Ryan Bader a year ago. Since then, he lost
his last two fights — to Rashad Evans and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. On July 7, Ortiz will cap his career with his third bout against Griffin. The two split their previous meetings, with Ortiz winning in 2006 and Griffin in 2009. “I think it’s just preparation, preparing for the fight of your life,” said Ortiz, whose fight record stands at 16-10-1. “I’ve been waiting 15 years for this, for 15 minutes. Only 15 minutes of my life that I have to give. Over the last eight weeks, I’ve been giving that 15 minutes three hours, four hours, five hours a day, six days a week, preparing for this fight. “I know who Forrest is. I know how he fights. I know how he likes to fight. I’m trying to absorb as much as I possibly can for the next week that I’ve been doing over the last eight weeks of continuing with this winning mentality.” Ortiz would like nothing more than to exit the UFC much like he entered — with a victory. “This fight means the world to me,” Ortiz said. “It’ll show on July 7 how much it means to me. I’m not coming in playing around. I’m not coming in talking no smack. I’m coming in to fight. I know Forrest is ready. I’m ready. So let’s fight.”

A subsequent loss to Chuck Liddell dropped Ortiz from title contention, but he notched five consecutive victories to earn a shot at the title, then held by Liddell, in 2006. Liddell again emerged victorious, and Ortiz’s career became besieged by injuries and disappointments. Ortiz, who was born in Santa Ana, Calif., and competes out of nearby Huntington Beach, underwent a lower-back fusion in 2008 to repair damage he sustained earlier in his career. Two years later, Ortiz underwent a second procedure to repair damage to his cervical spine.

FALLING UNDER THE ‘GRAVITY RUSH’ SPELL ometimes I dream I can fly — but it isn’t the majestic soaring of an eagle, Superman or even R. Kelly. It’s awkward, like something I’ve forgotten how to do and have to learn all over again. I can barely control my altitude or velocity, so I never know when I’ll plummet to the ground or crash into a wall. “Gravity Rush” (Sony, for the Vita, $39.99) captures that mix of exhilaration and anxiety. Your character, a girl named Kat, can’t remember her own past and is just figuring out how to use her newfound ability to defy gravity. Add in some gooey monsters from another dimension, and you have the stuff of nightmares. Kat doesn’t exactly fly. Instead, she changes the effect gravity has on her body, so she can walk up walls or hang from ceilings. The mechanics are simple: You press one button to make Kat float, point a
reticle where you want her to land, then press another button to make her leap to the next surface. She may arrive with a crash, but she’s generally impervious to any damage from falling. The perspective then shifts so that wherever Kat landed is now “down.” At first, it’s easy to get confused trying to remember which way is up. But the developers of “Gravity Rush” gently ease you into using Kat’s powers — so by the time the alien Nevi arrive, you’re ready to take them down with high-flying attacks. Kat can simply run up to enemies and pound them, but it’s far more effective to use her “gravity kick”: By aiming at the monsters as she falls, she adds the force of gravity to her attacks. Getting a bead on some of the shiftier creatures can be frustrating, but it’s quite satisfying when you nail one just right and

send it spinning into oblivion. Beyond combat, though, I really enjoyed just exploring Kat’s new home, the steam-punk-
ish Hekseville. Scattered throughout the city’s towers and sewers are pink gems Kat can spend to upgrade her abilities, including the power of her attacks and the length of time she can stay airborne. It’s easy to lose a few hours just bouncing around town, discovering its secrets and meeting its citizens. There’s a solid story here too, told largely through comic book-like sequences, and Kat is one of the most charming video-game heroines in a long while. She
makes “Gravity Rush” a must-buy for anyone who has invested in Sony’s new portable game machine.
“I
nversion” (Namco Bandai, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, $49.99) promises similar high jinks — like “Gravity Rush,” its cover art shows the protagonist “standing” horizontally on the wall of a building. But it settles for being a mundane shooter, failing to exploit the possibilities of its gravity-bending gimmick. As “Inversion” begins, Vanguard City is being invaded by a race of particularly unpleasant aliens. But as brutish as
they are, the Lutadore can manipulate gravity. It’s up to your character, a cop named Davis, to steal one of their “gravlinks” and wield it against them. You can use the gravlink to make a ceiling crash down to provide an escape route. Or you can lighten heavy objects and throw them at enemies. But the controls are aggravatingly imprecise — by the time you grab and hurl a projectile, you’re likely to be shot down. It’s safer to play “Inversion” like your standard gun game: Find cover, shoot, repeat ad infinitum. Eventually, “Inversion” lets you climb the walls or even fight in zero gravity, but it’s a long and tedious slog to that point. By then, a promising concept has come crashing to earth.
