ost hobbies begin with an introduction. For Shingo K, his start came at the impressionable age of 15 with an asphalt-gripping ride down Tantalus in a track-prepped BMW M3. “It had staggered wheels, suspension and was lowered,” says Shingo, who like most petrol heads was hooked after that first ride in a fast automobile. “I loved that car; I wanted an M3 after that.” In what is becoming a recurring theme among StreetPulse Rides subjects, Shingo has owned multiple vehicles by the time he turned 25, including six Nissan 240s, two Toyota Cressidas, an older Audi S4, a Honda S2000, a late-model Chevy Camaro, and the beautiful 2010 Audi S4 on these pages. He’s wrecked his fair share of them, ran into gremlins with some, and sold the rest in his quest to find that perfect car. And although he loved the Camaro, he seems to have an attraction to Nissans. “I love 240s. If I had money, I’d build one right now.” With no place to drift, it’s rather impractical to build a 240, so Shingo opted for luxury and style. I had the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of the S4 during the photo shoot, and the number of gadgets this car offers is tantamount to flying the space shuttle. I’m a fairly competent guy when it comes to technology, but something as simple as engaging the parking brake actually required me to ask for help. The Audi is no slouch in the looks

department either and is one of the most impressively late-model cars I’ve ever laid eyes on. The body is svelte, wrapped in Brilliant Black, and screams high-end with a sub-50k price tag. Shingo appreciates the look and opted to add some slight spice with a ModBargains DTM carbon lip and some Milltek sport oval exhaust tips. Interior-wise, the car features oCarbon custom carbon fiber trip and the gorgeous premium extended leather trim. You can’t help but be impressed as you hunker down into the body-hugging seats and stare at the lovingly appointed interior trim. Indeed, this is one sexylooking cockpit! From the factory, the Audi S4 is no slouch and sports a super-charged 3.0-liter V6 that pumps

worth it.” He isn’t even close to being finished with the S4, and intends to modify the suspension, add a big-brake kit, a carbon fiber spoiler, and the newer three-piece BLQs.

Although he has further plans, Shingo does view this car as being in a transitory state. His dream car is considered the holy grail by most import enthusiasts — the Nissan GT-R. ravis Ewing sees the martial arts as more than a competitive sport or a method of self-defense, but as a true art form and method of expression. “Being a martial artist is a beautiful way to live your life,” he says with conviction.

Ewing’s journey as a fighter began with Shaolin Kung Fu while living in Albuquerque, N.M. There, he participated with performance teams, demonstrating fighting forms and the dragon dance. Ewing even made the trip to China to train at the legendary Shaolin Temple in Dengfeng, where he was able to spar with one of the Temple’s monks. Despite loving the forms and artistry of kung fu, Ewing felt as if something was missing. “Kung fu is often taught ineffectively,” he says. “There isn’t enough contact.” Seeking to take his training to the next level, he decided to add Western boxing to the mix. “The first time I got punched, I ran around the ring,” Ewing says. He admits he ran because it was scary to actually get hit. The fear, however, didn’t prevent him from getting back in the ring. “I decided I was going to keep doing this until I wasn’t scared,” he says. “You soon stop being afraid and start wanting to hit back.” Ewing would eventually start going even further with his martial arts and started training with renowned MMA coach Greg Jackson. He got good enough to become a regular sparring partner of top fighters such as Diego Sanchez, Keith Jardine, Nate Marquardt and John Dodson. Jackson also gave Ewing the chance to hone his skills as a coach and corner man for some smaller-scale MMA bouts. He also did some coaching at LA Boxing. Competition was the next logical step. Ewing did a few local tournaments before moving on to compete in Grappler’s Quest in Las Vegas — where

he entered twice, winning both times. His desire to improve himself eventually led Ewing to spend a couple of months in Florida training with Marcelo Garcia, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion widely considered to be one of the best pound-for-pound, no-gi-and-gi-submission grapplers in the world. “It was an apex martial arts experience,” says Ewing. “Marcelo is the greatest grappler and one of the kindest human beings I have ever met.”
Urijah Faber, Chiesa routinely practiced against Iaquinta during the three-month tournament. “I had a couple of rough sparring sessions with him this season,” Chiesa said. “He’s a very tough guy, very well-rounded. I saw no holes in his game. I thought this fight was going to go three rounds. I thought it was going to be a war. Fortunately things went in my favor. It’s just a tough season.” The tournament was emotionally difficult for Chiesa, whose father passed away during his first week on the show.
Ewing also has deep ties to Hawaii, spending many summers here as a youth. During an extended stay in Honolulu after college, in fact, Ewing decided to find a local school to train at. He ended up training with Burton Richardson at JKD Unlimited, and immediately noticed how different Richardson’s school was. “Everyone was really good with flawless techniques, but they were also really nice,” he says. “It wasn’t always like that in MMA. It made me want to move out here and train with those kinds of people.” Ewing ended up permanently relocating to Hawaii. While here, he has taught at both Icon Fitness and MMA Center, and at Chris Leben’s Fight School Hawaii, where he was one of Leben’s pre-fight sparring partners. He also has taught his own women’s and kids’ martial arts classes. “I never planned on coaching or teaching,” he says. “But if you love something, you want to pass it along.” Right now, Travis Ewing is only working one-on-one with private clients, including one woman who is training for a major grappling tournament in Canada. Ewing himself is preparing to step back into the cage for an MMA bout this fall in New Zealand. But it’s the daily training of the martial lifestyle that really motivates him. “Every day I am surprised by something so wonderful I couldn’t have imagined it,” he says. “You are always surprised by what you can do.”
“It’s pretty self-explanatory,” Chiesa said of his emotions. “For everybody that watched the season, they knew what I was going through. Just every day, I had to pull myself up, just pushing forward, keep training, just keep fighting tough fights.” Elsewhere in the MMA world: • The fight announcements for Bellator Fighting Championships’ Summer Series are nearly complete. The first show, Bellator 71, will be held at the Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort in Chester, W.Va., June 24. The card will feature the first round of the Series’ light
heavyweight tournament. The second show will be held at the in Tampa, Fla., July 20. The event will feature the Season 6 welterweight tournament final, the Series’ light heavyweight semifinals and the third fight between welterweights Waachiim Spiritwolf and Marius Zaromskis. The Summer Series will conclude with the light heavyweight final and with Bellator featherweight champion Pat Curran’s first title defense against Patricio Freire Aug. 24. The location for Bellator 73 has not yet been announced.

T
he epic fantasy genre has matured in the last decade, thanks to writers like “Game of Thrones” mastermind George R.R. Martin who are less interested in the eternal conflict between good and evil than in the gray areas in between. Video games have followed suit, with ambitious adventures like “Dragon Age: Origins,” “The Witcher II” and “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” refusing to define their heroes and villains so neatly. So when “Diablo III” (Blizzard, for the PC/Mac, $59.99) arrived with the tag line “Evil Is Back,” it was hard not to look at it as a throwback of sorts. You know who the troublemakers are in this game: They have red skin, glowing eyes and razor-sharp horns. It’s the devil you know. That’s not the only thing that will make players wonder where the developers have been since “Diablo II” came out in 2000. The topdown, god’s-eye perspective takes some readjustment after years of battling from protagonist’s point of view. Forget about the open-world exploration of “Skyrim”; “Diablo III” is relentlessly linear. And the combat, at the default setting, rarely demands more
than hacking and slashing your way through hordes of easily dispatched monsters. And yet, “Diablo III” is nearly irresistible. You start by choosing a character from one of five archetypes: the barbarian and monk, who fight up-close; the demon hunter, who uses long-range weapons; and the
wizard and witch doctor, who wield magic. After a brief video setting up the tale — a falling star has crashed into the human world, Sanctuary — you’re thrust into the fray. Once you get into its rhythm — fight, collect your rewards, take a breath before the next fight — “Diablo III” is very hard to shut down. Much of that is due to the uncomplicated controls: You can perform most movement and combat functions by just clicking the mouse keys. I
wouldn’t be surprised if there’s an upswing in carpal tunnel syndrome cases a few months from now. There’s also a desire to keep playing just to see what’s around the next corner of the dungeon or over the next dune in the desert. And for many “Diablo” aficionados, that boils down to loot. Every monster
you kill coughs up something — a few gold coins, perhaps, or a chunk of armor. Tougher creatures tend to yield more exotic rewards, but the process is randomized, so you never know what you’ll get. When you get back to town, you can sell whatever you’ve gathered and use the cash to upgrade your weapons and armor. Or you can trade them with other players in an online auction house. Or you can ask the blacksmith to break down
items and use the components to build better ones — so you can defeat stronger enemies, which earns you more valuable stuff. The whole loot-collecting feedback loop is as insidiously addictive as anything in games. The most irritating element of “Diablo III” is the need to have a steady online connection, even if you’re traveling solo. The online requirement led to chaos when the game was first released, as Blizzard’s servers weren’t able to meet 12 years of pentup demand. The situation has been mostly resolved, but there have been a few recent occasions when I wasn’t allowed to log on. The always-connected environment does let you tackle any of the game’s missions with the help of online friends or strangers. The difficulty automatically increases with multiple players, and it’s fun to chat with other humans in the wastelands of Sanctuary, but the experience isn’t radically different. After one prolonged session of monster slaying, as the clock approached 4 a.m., a supporting character asked my demon hunter: “Do you ever become weary of strife? Of constant fighting?” His response: “Rest is a luxury I cannot afford.” You’ll feel the same way after a few hours of “Diablo III.” Three stars out of four.
