he 1980’s in Hawaii were known for a number of different automotive trends, one of which was the huge Volkswagen craze which still exists today. Whether it was drag racing, sand buggies, or cruisers, VW was a mainstay of the tuner scene. At the age of 16 Daniel Arakaki became a fan of the Volkswagen as well. Local legends like ex-drag racer John Karcey and his super-fuel efficient Ghia engine and Marc Deacon’s turbo’d Red Rider, capable of mid 9’s in the 1/4 mile, contributed to his love for the classic VW engine. Since then, Dan has owned a number of different cars, and continues to build and modify them to his heart’s content including this 1964 VW Bug. “You have to ride a Volkswagen; you have to own one, to drive one, to understand the passion”. says Dan. Volkswagens are a vastly different type of cars. They have short wheel bases, their engines are in the rear, and their sound is unique and immediately identifiable. Dan’s first VW was a 1965 Bug with a 1776cc engine with 48mm throttle bodies. As time went on, he increased the engine size until realizing that he could get more power with a small turbocharged engine. His current setup is made up of a T04E turbocharger mated to a 2165cc motor pushing thirty-two pounds of boost. To handle that amount of boost the engine and transmission has been gently massaged. The engine is built up with an original 1974 Gene Berg crank, Wiseco pistons, powder rods, super flow heads, titanium valves and more. “It had a Type 1 transaxle that kept breaking, so we had to switch”

says Dan which necessitated a swap to a Mendeola MD4 transaxle. In addition, the rear-end has been shorted 5 inches and power is put to the ground with Mickey Thompson Slicks slapped on a selection of Bogart Racing Rims. The body is painted in lavish shade of yellow detailed with lustrous color-change purple flames. Its aggressive stance is further enhanced by a custom Wally Maze spoiler. The entire appearance of the car screams drag racer. Stepping into the interior continues that motif with a Grant GT Steering Wheel, Simpson Racing Harness, MSD Ignition and more. All of this comes together to form a VW capable of running the 1/4th mile in 9.57 seconds at 162 miles an hour. Unfortunately, this speed and power is sadly wasted on an island without a proper drag strip. “It’s become a shelf in the garage” chuckles Dan sadly. He believes that even in poor economic times, people will still support their hobbies and passions. “Look at how many city golf courses we have...how money is mismanaged. I think the

racing population could generate millions of dollars in Hawaii.” Sadly, the general public is simply unaware of the amount of income invested in racing as well as its benefits for youth and community. It goes farther than simply being an economic problem. Dan says “Our younger kids are missing out...it was a family thing we used to do with our
older children. When the younger ones hear their brothers and sisters talk about going to the races they realize they’ll never experience the same thing.” Although there’s no track on Oahu, this hasn’t stopped Dan from moving forward and enjoying himself. Building VWs is a hobby of his that he’ll never tire of...in fact; he’s currently building a Meyers Manx in which the heart of this bad bug will live on in. I can’t wait to see it.

uzzled in the heart of Kailua lies Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Kailua, located in suites 103 and 104 on 35 Kainehe St. Jason Izaguirre, head instructor and founder of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Kailua, was born and raised in Kailua focuses on selfdefense, which is something he aims to instill in all of his students. “I’m a huge traditionalist,” Izaguirre said about the fundamental of jiu-jitsu. He explained that jiu-jitsu has grown so much over the past years, but his style is not that of MMA or street fighting. His style is for anybody from the 4-year-old to the person who wants to be in better shape. “We take anybody,” Izaguirre said with a smile. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Kailua has classes for kids ages 4-9 and 10-17, as well as adult classes. It’s evident the students both admire and respect Izaguirre. I was fortunate to catch the tail end of one of his kids (10-17 year olds) classes at which all the students stood straight with rapt attention. Upon the
completion of the class, many students stayed after to give high-fives to their instructor. Izaguirre and the academy specialize in the original Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Self-Defense System, which has proven to be effective for not only the general public, but also for police and military officials, as stated in the academy’s handbook. When he turned 18, Izaguirre moved to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, where he was introduced to the art of Gracie jiu-jitsu. Carlinhos Gracie and the Machado brothers trained Izaguirre at Gracie Barra, and he received his blue belt from Rillion Gracie. Izaguirre also trained under legends like the late Marcello Behring and world champion Royler Gracie. Those who take classes at Gracie JiuJitsu Kailua can rest assured they’re

getting the best instruction possible as Izaguirre’s passion and dedication to the art shines through. Upon his return to the islands, he continued his training under Relson Gracie – Izaguirre also returned to Rio De Janeiro three times to continue under Royler Gracie at Gracie Humita. After years of training under Royler Gracie, Izaguirre received his black belt, and he could then look forward to his dream – opening an academy in his hometown of Kailua. Izaguirre follows the strict teaching methods of Grand Master Helio Gracie, and founded the academy to ensure students are able to defend themselves as well as possible. For his classes, Izaguirre makes sure his younger students get their cardio in, as well as stretching. He also includes time for take-downs in the style of judo or wrestling,

The crucifix from the back is a great move that fighters are just beginning to use in MMA competitions. You obtain the position by hooking his near arm with your leg and his far arm by weaving your arm under his triceps and over his wrist. This means that both of his hands are trapped while you have one left to strike with or sink a choke. One important tip; keep your knees pointed forward and lean back to keep him from bucking you off. Practice this move and you will find that you can get unsuspecting fighters in this dominant position!

has them practice one or two positions on the ground, and gives them 15-20 minutes of sparring at the end of the class. The adult classes are a little different, as Izaguirre puts a little more focus on the fundamentals of jiu-jitsu in the art of selfdefense, and he once again explains that jiu-jitsu is not just a sport. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, who celebrates its 10th year in November, also offers private lessons, and Izaguirre is hoping he can hold women’s self-defense classes again in the future. ‘STARHAWK’ SOARS, WITH A BUMPY LANDING
H
ere’s the problem with science fiction video games: At some point, you know you’re going to run into some alien race that wants to crush humanity. From “Halo” to “Gears of War” to “Mass Effect,” the scenario is so familiar it’s become exhausting. One can only save the universe so many times. So it’s refreshing to jump into “Starhawk” (Sony, $59.99, for the PlayStation 3), where the stakes are a bit more humble. The heroes are just a bunch of working stiffs trying to make a living by mining an exotic substance called “rift energy.” The villains — well, they’re human, too, except they’ve mutated into bloodthirsty monsters after being exposed to too much of the glowing blue fuel. The protagonist, Emmett Graves, falls somewhere in between, part human Rifter, part mutant Outcast. He’s been ostracized because of his exposure to rift energy, but maintains his grip on sanity. When his hometown on the planet Dust reaches out for help, he answers the call. “Starhawk” has the flavor of a classic Western, with the noble but tormented gunslinger defending a ramshackle frontier town from ruthless outlaws. The twangy soundtrack reinforces the con-
nection; sci-fi fans will be reminded of Joss Whedon’s cult space opera “Firefly.” Emmett’s odyssey is presented as a series of set pieces broken up by comic book-like exposition. One mission may have you storming an Outcast fortress; the next may have you defending the town of
space combat. Much of the “Starhawk” development team worked on 2007’s flight combat simulator “Warhawk,” and their experience pays off. Three-dimensional aerial combat can be confusing, but I never felt overwhelmed in “Starhawk,” no matter how many Outcast
missions never become a compelling drama. Essentially, it feels like an extended tutorial for all the cool tools you can use in multiplayer matches. And yet, online competition isn’t thoroughly realized either. “Starhawk” offers a basic set of familiar multiplayer modes, like deathmatch and

White Sands from invasion. “Starhawk” adds a nifty strategic element: Killing Outcasts earns you rift energy, which you can spend to build offensive or defensive structures. You can build walls, watchtowers or turrets to defend your turf, or you can call up garages that squirt out land speeders or fighter jets. Those jets — “Hawks” — are essential to the game’s best feature: its thrilling outer
raiders were chasing me. Usually, when a game has so many different elements, some are less successful than others. But I was surprised by how nimbly “Starhawk” shifts among genres, from third-person shooter to tower defense to dogfighting. The single-player campaign, however, isn’t entirely satisfying. About six hours long, it’s stubbornly linear. Despite the intriguing setup, the
capture-the-flag, but nothing original. I’m impressed by its sprawling battlefields and 32player matches, but it remains to be seen how well the PlayStation nation will adjust to its more strategic elements. As a complete package, “Starhawk” feels somewhat undercooked. But when you’re soaring through space in your Hawk, it’s exhilarating. Two-and-a-half stars out of four.
