JOANNE ROMERO

Entertaining made easy ately, I’ve been attending or hosting more and more gatherings. They’ve ranged from sit-down dinners to potlucks, pau hanas and backyard barbecues. Maybe I’m getting older, but I prefer getting together with a group of friends and family while enjoying some good food and drinks at someone’s house over going to a bar for a night of fun.

L

The gatherings I host seem to get better and, at the same time, less stressful. A little bit of foresight goes a long way. Take some of the stress out of your next gathering by following

these simple steps. 1. Switch to incandescent. It’s true, CFLs (compact fluorescent lights) are typically more energy-efficient for everyday use. However, the majority of these bulbs also emit an unflattering glow that some people claim causes headaches. The warmness of an incandescent provides a softer light that is easier on the eyes. Turn off the overhead lights, and make the switch in your lamps. You might also consider hanging string lights for the occasion. 2. Set up a beverage station. Go the familystyle approach and let guests take the reins when it comes to drinks. Set out some staples such as water, juice, soda, beer and wine. You can use the end of a countertop or a cocktail table. If you’re using coolers, keep them on the lanai. Make sure to keep all the beverages in the same spot, so guests don’t have

If dinner is your focal point and you don’t have a formal dining room, don’t fret. Move the couches and put the table in the living room. Remove items that take up too much space, and put them back tomorrow. 4. Set up an area for shoes. It’s natural for guests to walk up, say hello, remove their shoes, and proceed to the party. Take away the guesswork for

them by designating a spot large enough to accommodate all of the guests’ shoes, with some extra room to spare. Think vertical to save on space and utilize a multi-level shoe rack.

Here’s the akamai choice for windows, doors and siding I

f you need to fix up your aging home and don’t know where to start, call Tropical Wholesale (Tropical). Family owned and operated in Hawaii for more than 30 years, Tropical is the expert when it comes to replacing windows and doors or installing vinyl siding in Hawaii. Tropical owner Matt Houar has had thousands of satisfied local customers. Plus, at Tropical, there are no middlemen or sub-contractors. It’s just the company’s “local boys” doing the best installations with the best materials available in Hawaii. For example, Tropical has distributed and installed Simonton Windows and Doors No. 1 by J.D. Power and Associates — which are top-rated nationwide in customer satisfaction as well as builder satisfaction — for more than five years. The main reason is that Simonton has the only Full Lifetime Warranty on materials, hardware and labor in Hawaii. All other brands void warranties, especially hardware warranties, because of Hawaii’s

severe salt air conditions. Simonton also has specific features no other windows have such as triple-glazed windows with argon glass. All windows also come standard with low-e 366 Energy Star glass and have the easy-clean glass system. Simonton also features seven styles of customized glass as well as

10 frame colors to help design a unique home. Simonton’s products are so good that both Costco and Sam’s Club offer Simonton windows and doors exclusively in their IPS (installed product services) programs in Hawaii. Members can call to inquire

about that discount. Tropical also sells, installs and distributes Norandex Vinyl Siding products. Norandex is absolutely the thickest vinyl siding sold in Hawaii — and the U.S. Norandex has a 100 percent Lifetime Warranty. And if you are worried about wood rot and termite repairs, don’t worry, as Tropical has termite programs and is a general contractor that makes all necessary repairs before installing Norandex Lifetime Siding on your home. Tropical has more than 20 colors and 12 styles to choose from as well as insulation to cool off hot homes. So when it’s time to customize and update the exterior of your home with vinyl siding and install new windows and doors, stay local and call Tropical, a family of experts that has worked on thousands of homes in Hawaii for more than 30 years. Guaranteeing high-quality, renewable energy for all BY MICHELLE LEE or many years, the tax incentives that gave most homeowners and corporations the ability to take advantage of solar power were not favorable for non-profit organizations. “We made it one of our core objectives to change that, said Joseph Saturnia, president of Island Pacific Energy. Founded in 2007, Island Pacific Energy was the first company in Hawaii to enable a non-profit organization to utilize solar power with the installation of a photovoltaic (PV) system at Punahou School. “Since then, we have been fortunate to have a number of successes, said Saturnia, whose list of satisfied clients include Hawaiian Electric, Chaminade University and Young Brothers. To facilitate the complex financial transactions that come with assisting non-profits, Island Pacific Energy relies on the knowledge and liaisons gained from years of experience in Hawaii. “It has become an area of expertise we are very comfortable with due to our buying power and opera-

tional efficiency, said Saturnia. “We are very proud of the fact that we have enabled certain institutions to acquire renewable energy who otherwise would not have been able to. In addition to working with non-profits, Island Pacific Energy also services customers on both the residential and commercial spectrum. The company purchases

its PV panels from a variety of different manufacturers and is not contractually obligated with any one company. “We want to be able to offer our customers the best value in terms of products available, said Saturnia. “Not every house has the same energy needs, so we tailor our services and products accordingly to save the client the most money.

The installation process is simple. To start, customers can call Island Pacific Energy to schedule a free, on-site consultation in which a sales consultant will survey the home as well as analyze the electrical bill. Within 30 minutes, the homeowner can expect to receive a proposal that shows how much energy a PV system will generate, how much the home can expect to save and the different financing options available. From the time a client agrees to a proposal, the process takes approximately three weeks to engineer and install the system. In addition, after one year, all homes receive a free inspection and cleaning. For more information or to schedule a free consultation, visit www.islandpaci ficenergy.com or call 377-4570.

Drywood termites don’t stand a chance against orange oil A Q: What is XT-2000 Orange Oil? A: After orange rinds are squeezed, the oil is extracted and distilled to make 95 percent pure oil. Q: How long has the company used this process? A: Akamai Pest Solutions has done this treatments for more than eight years. It has been around for more than 20 years. Q: How do I know if my home or business is a good candidate for an XT-2000 Orange Oil treatment? A: The company’s expert inspectors can do a thorough inspection of the structure. Rarely is a structure untreatable. In those rare cases, Akamai Pest Solutions will refer the customer to another company for fumigation or whatever process is needed to get rid of the termites. Q: Is orange oil pricier than fumigation? A: Fumigation varies in price based on the company and the proper ty’s location. Orange oil is expensive, since the process is more detailed

and labor intensive. But after factoring in the cost of moving out, potential home damage, hiring a

security guard, etc., Akamai Pest Solutions’ services cost the same or even less.

Q: Do I have to move out during the treatment? A: Since the orange oil is injected directly into the wood and is totally organic, homeowners, children and pets can stay at home during treatment, which usually takes one day or less. Q: Is there a warranty for orange oil treatments? A: Yes, in most cases the company can offer a full structure warranty for two years. It follows up with annual inspections for any new infestations, which are then treated free of charge.

10 JULY 7 • 2013 SURFACE SHIELD ROOFING

The services you need are all under one roof W ith more than 20 years of experience in Hawaii’s roofing and solar industry, Surface Shield Roofing’s Shon Gregory has seen the business change as materials and technologies are adapted to the needs and priorities of property owners. “Our clients are becoming increasingly concerned with rising energy costs,” Gregory said. Because of our state’s dependence on imported oil, energy costs in Hawaii are the highest in the U.S., and the need to reduce the price of cooling a home or business has led to innovations. “The market demands that we work with the latest materials and technologies,” said Gregory, “because our clients want to save on their energy costs over the long term.” “Cool roofing” is an approach that has a variety of cost and environmental benefits. Because such coatings are applied to existing roofing substrate, demolition that sends waste to a landfill is unnecessary. Buildings using cool roof materials and technologies can save up to 25 percent on energy costs. Roof coatings are seamless, and when installed correctly, can solve roof leaks on

almost any type of roof substrate. Fieldapplied reflective roof coatings can extend the useful life of most roof substrates, keeping the surface cool and providing a level of protection from the sun and weather. Roof coatings can also add 25plus years to the service life of a roof. Surface Shield uses a variety of roof coating products. Here are a few benefits of one of the highly efficient coatings used daily by the team: • Ninety-five percent solid Silicone contains no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) that will evaporate into the air. • Silicone coatings are the only non-sacrificial coatings available. Other coating systems will degrade with UV rays from the sun. • Silicone coatings are capable of withstanding permanent ponding water with no effect on the product. • Silicone coatings will not support mold or mildew growth, nor will they blacken because of mold or mildew. • Silicone coatings are fast-drying. In tropical climates, silicone is dry enough to walk on in two hours, so multiple coats can be

SURFACE SHIELD ROOFING contact // 396-9599 web // www.surfaceshieldroofing.com applied in the same day. • Silicone will not wash out. Rain, even a minute after application, will not compromise it. Surface Shield also features solar PV services. This industry has been making headlines for some time now, and for good reason. Preparing for the future and preRE-ROOFING REPAIR INSPECTIONS

dicting the inevitable increase in electricity cost is a smart, responsible thing to do for your home or business. Surface Shield is proud to offer the best in roofing, waterproofing and solar energy. It offers sensible roof and solar PV packages for our island home and business owners, providing workmanship warranties and reliability you’ll know you can depend on.

12 JULY 7 • 2013 ESSENTIAL CABINET REFACING INC.

Add flavor with a fresh cabinet face t’s time to give your kitchen — the most visited room in the house — a new look. Since you are spending so much time there, don’t you deserve a room that is efficient, modern and pleasant? Undoubtedly, you want to make improvements that make sense and fall within your budget. You also want quality within a price you can afford. Most of all, you need an experienced licensed contractor who has proven to be capable of completing the job at an affordable price time and time again. Essential Cabinet Refacing Inc. (ECR) is in its 23rd year of business. For owners Ringo and Michele Pauly, the first advice they got as young entrepreneurs came from Lex Brodie, who encouraged them to run their business with integrity. To them, this meant listening to their customers, sharing their remodeling expertise with clients to ensure the job performed was the right match for the customer and doing the job at a competitive, yet fair price. Since

I

then, their mission has been to have satisfied customers at the end of every project. Over the years, materials and remodeling methods have changed a great deal. ECR has kept current in the industry and offers up-todate styles, designs and materials. ECR has offered refacing as an economical option for upgrading cabinets since 1989. Refacing is the method of giving cabinets a “facelift without going through the time and expense of ripping out existing cabinets and installing new ones. Since the doors and drawers are replaced, the exterior of the cabinets is brand new and gives a modernized look. The interior remains the same and a lot of money is saved. This gives customers the freedom to increase their budget and add features such as new countertops, appliances or special features like rolling pull-out drawers. Navigating the Waters In feng shui, water is a symbol for emotions. At home and elsewhere in our lives, a downpour of water-related issues can mean it’s time to dive within

Inasmuch as water also represents wealth, prosperity and opportunity in feng shui, fixing even minor plumbing issues in a home as soon as possible is advisable. Leaky faucets and broken toilets symbolize the undesirable draining of finances and more.

with

Alice Inoue QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I have been having repeated plumbing issues recently. Besides calling the plumber, should I do or be aware of anything energetically? Also, I have been having many dreams where water is the theme. One time it was about visiting a waterfall; another time I was walking in the rain, and recently I was trying to cross a river. What does all this mean?

nasmuch as I recently received many questions that had to do with water, including five questions about the reason for washing machines breaking down, I decided that a few different aspects of water would be my topic for this week. As an astrologer, I find these concerns a natural synchronicity as an emphasis on the water element, which is currently in the sky and will continue for many months. Half of our planets are traveling through water signs, and in both astrology and feng shui, water represents our emotions. This is a time to pay attention to our emotions more than ever before. You may have noticed that other people’s emotional swings are more pronounced than usual. Drivers may have stronger emotional reactions on the road, or co-workers, family or friends may have increased emotional volatility. If you personally feel more emotional than usual, take this as a sign to do things differently. Here are some suggestions to navigate this strong water energy.

I

• Pay attention to making sure your needs are met, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Take responsibility for yourself, making the time, spending the money or taking the necessary action.

• Feelings need to be expressed, not repressed, so give yourself permission to feel without censorship. Talk to someone you trust, setting up ground rules so that you can share your feelings without self-judgment or judgment by the other person.

• Make a decision to keep your life free of drama. Make choices that take you toward interaction with positive-minded people or make the time to spend with yourself, creating your own peace. Water helps guide us During strong water times like these, we get in touch with what is no longer working in our lives, as old and outdated structures start to feel limiting, unfulfilling relationships feel like a drain, the job you dislike feels

heavier than ever, and any lack of purpose or direction in your life starts to feel unsettling. Let your feelings guide you in a new direction or toward a new outlook or a new way of navigating life. Consider your feelings your internal GPS. If you are frustrated or unhappy, heed your feelings, and don’t worry about making drastic changes. Start with small steps. Sometimes all that is needed is a change in perspective. If you feel great, and life is going well, your feelings are probably commensurate. Water issues in the home When plumbing issues come up in a home (water), emotional issues are either being repressed or processed by you or those in the home. Besides calling a plumber to fix the physical problem, you can support those in the home emotionally by purchasing some new, inexpensive healthy indoor plants, placing them near the area of the plumbing issue or somewhere in the home where you will see them often. Plants represent wood energy; and because “water feeds wood” energetically, the water issue in your home symbolically has a place to go.

Water-related dreams Dreams, powerful sources of information having symbolic meaning, are like windows into our subconscious, allowing us to see the information that is flowing in or out of our minds, communicating feelings, thoughts, ideas and needs that are hidden when we are awake. Water is one of the most common yet powerful dream symbols, generally associated with emotions and cleansing. Although many other representations of water are found in dream interpretation, such as the connection to mother, or spirituality, I’ve noticed that water-related dreams usually have something to do with some aspect of our emotions. Dream interpretation is varied, covering the spectrum from psychoanalytic to spiritual. Over the years, people have often asked me to interpret their dreams, and while detail is important, the symbolism is more so. Waterfalls in dreams usually relate to a great release of emotion and a need for rejuvenation and renewal, especially if you are viewing the waterfall from afar, rather than standing beneath one, which can represent overwhelm. Rain can represent an emotional turning point, and crossing rivers can be about overcoming obstacles and challenges. Between the plumbing issues and your dreams, I am certain that you are dealing with some strong emotional issues, but it also looks as if you are on your way to a new path.

The questions about washing machines breaking were new for me, but I view it as a water-themed symbol, suggesting that how you spend your time and energy is due for a change! Aren’t we all, though?

Top remodel trends for the modern home T hanks to foreclosures and short sales, home buyers are snatching up great houses at reduced prices and remodeling to create stylish modern homes. Lucky for those buyers, many of today’s top trends are relatively easy to recreate, and will add re-sale value to their homes. “TV interior design shows are mostly about buying and remodeling a home, versus building from scratch or finding a new property that precisely fits a wish list with plenty of personal requirements,” said Dani

Kohl, program coordinator for the bachelor of science in interior design program at The Art Institute of Indianapolis and a practicing architect and interior designer. The top remodeling trends include: • Uniting the kitchen and living space for an open-floor concept • Culture dictating an increase in square footage for an entertainment haven from a busy work schedule or modern luxuries • Finding multi-functional uses for both spaces and furniture

On average, Kohl’s residential clients are spending about $40,000 to $60,000 to renovate and remodel their homes. Most of the money is spent in the kitchens, master bedrooms and bathrooms. “Gone are the days of the formal dining room and living room,” said Kohl. “Walls are being knocked down to join Before

Pedro Lima, an interior design instructor and owner of Pedro Lima Interiors, said that temporary partitions between the living space and kitchen are also on the rise. floor plan for the kitchen and living room, while still maintaining a defined space for each. Lima said that our current culture and habits are driving the changes in modern, interior spaces. “When it comes to the master bedroom, we are looking at a more pampering atmosphere,” he said. Both Kohl and Lima agreed that clients want more of a spa-like feeling than ever before to create a bedroom that is a safe haven for overworked homeowners. “Master bedrooms now have their own seating areas and entertainment nooks, and have become personal spaces away from everything,” Lima said. An increase in square footage for closet space is another popular request, according to Lima. “We, as designers, are now looking into proper modular systems of rods and shelving, in addition to our architec-

tural and design duties.” Closets are not just for storage anymore, either. “Now, we’re looking at closets to serve as a dressing space in addition to serving as a place to store an increased amount clothes and shoes.” How are clients gaining square footage for the needs of today’s residential space without making a complete renovation

and creating add-ons to their homes? Lima said that downsizing to accommodate upsizing is part of the remodel plans too. “Designers are spending more time at looking for innovative ways to add versatile furniture that serve multifunctional purposes,” he said. “For instance, coffee tables also serve as storage spaces and additional seating, wall

DIY is a snap with the right tool t’s time to star t working on the “to do” list and handle some of those easier DIY tasks. From simple fixes to bigger projects, sometimes all you need is the right tool at the right time to get the job done. Here are some helpful ideas to get you started.

cuit off before changing a fixture. Remove the old fixture by unscrewing the cover plate and disconnecting the electrical wires. Reconnect the new fixture according to the directions included in the box. Using a lightweight power screwdriver for this project will prevent your arms from getting tired while working above your head.

I

Fix that door that won’t stay open Having a door that shuts when you want it to stay open can be a real annoyance. Try tightening the screws on the top door hinge with a power screwdriver like the new 360 Quick-Select from SKIL. This tool comes with 12 of the most commonly used screwdriver bits in a rotating compar tment located at the front of the tool so you don’t have to put your project on hold to switch bits. Put together a ready-to-assemble (RTA) piece of furniture: RTA furniture looks like an easy project in the store, but once you get it home it can quickly get the best of you. But with a little patience and the right tool, the project can provide self-satisfaction besides a new piece of furniture. In fact, using a power screwdriver can help eliminate frustration and get the project finished even faster. Plus, you’ll know each screw is secure to avoid anything falling apart later.

Day to day repairs Keeping a power screwdriver in the kitchen drawer will let you make those little repairs as they happen. So when that drawer knob or towel bar comes loose again because the kids are forever pulling on them too hard, grab the power screwdriver out of the draw and get it fixed on the spot. Lithium ion batteries can stay charged for up to 18 months so the power screwdriver will be charged and ready when you need it.

Give old furniture a new life If the office desk is looking shabby (or maybe it’s a table or dresser), give it an easy makeover. A company with anA+ on its ‘Homeworks’ T he quality and creativity of renovations at two Honolulu homes earned Homeworks Construction four awards in the 2013 BIA Renaissance Building and Remodeling Awards program. This was the 28th annual presentation of the prestigious competition, in which Homeworks has won multiple awards over the years. A kitchen, bath and fireplace in a Hawaii Loa Ridge home received individual awards and a home in Wilhelmina Rise was recog-

nized with an Award of Merit. The Hawaii Loa Ridge remodel was described by project manager Heather Hickox as “re-customizing” a 12-year-old custom home. It would involve structural work, new kitchen and baths, replacement of floors, doors, windows and cabinets, and the addition of a ground floor master bedroom suite and study. “Along the way we had many meetings with the owners to give them options on the design,” Hickox said. “We gutted the

kitchen and bathrooms and created a more contemporary look.” In the kitchen, winner in Kitchen DivisionProjects Up To $75,000, the open beam ceilings were repainted to brighten what had been a dark, closed up room and transform it into a spacious gathering place. An island with pendant lighting and walk-in pantry were added. “In the bathrooms, one of which won in the division for projects from $25,000 to $50,000, we replaced showers, sinks and tubs and added new tile as well as granite counters and hardwood cabinets. The own-

ers loved vibrant color, so the challenge was to coordinate the many colors and mediums into a cohesive bath renovation design. The main materials utilized were Renoir granite and Shells Reef limestone.” The fireplace was the winner in the Residential Details division. It was referred to as “a unique focal point of the room with a solid cherry wood mantel and surround providing contrast to the flooring.” Homeworks Construction’s Wilhelmina Rise house remodel won an Award of Merit in the division for “Projects more than $500,001.”

Cool the ‘Whole House’ with this new system R unning quietly in the attic of Pam Sato’s Mililani home is a breakthrough piece of technology in energy-efficient home cooling products. Unseen from the outside of the home, the Whole House Fan quietly draws hot air out of the living space through a ceiling intake while cooling both the home’s living space and attic at a fraction of the cost of air conditioning systems. “Since I installed my Whole House Fan system in 2011, it’s been all I’ve used to cool my home and saved me money off my electrical bills,” said Sato. “I saved more when it came time to put in solar by installing fewer panels. I tell everyone about it; it’s amazing how it sucks the hot air right out of my home!” The popularity of this alternative cooling system is growing as homeowners discover how effective it is. Throughout Oahu, more than 400 homeowners have taken steps towards in-home comfort and lower electrical bills by having Whole House Fans installed. “I run my Whole House Fan instead of my A/C and save an average of $100 per

month,” said Kumu Vasconcellos of Hawaii Kai. “It’s a great way to cool my  town home!” “Homeowners today are more aware of the need for energy efficiency and are actively looking for better ways to cool their homes,” said Ivan Whitworth of Island Cooling LLC. “And the Whole House Fan is a perfect fit for our island lifestyle. Rather than having to close windows and doors and hiding out with chilled air, the Whole House Fan takes advantage of natural airflow and allows us to live a more open life.”  Founded in 2008 to bring energy efficient cooling solutions to Hawaii, Island Cooling LLC is Honolulu’s distributor of Quiet Cool Whole House Fans.  In addition to larger units for whole home cooling, the company also has bedroom-sized units for home offices and bedrooms.  “The Whole House Fan is designed to provide on-demand cooling,” said Al Whitworth, a certified Green Professional with Island Cooling. “You can use it just as you would a ceiling fan, but since it’s taking the heat out of a home,

ENERGYPRO HAWAII JULY 7 • 2013 19

Get the most production out of your solar energy panels O ne of the most frequently asked questions by prospective solar electric system purchasers is: How many panels do I actually need? Oftentimes people will choose the lowest number of panels feeling confident that they will be enough. Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t. Results from companies can vary. Amounts can differ depending on where you live, how much electricity you actually use on a daily basis, what type of inverters are being used and, of course, the photovoltaic (PV) panel’s production, which is measured by the number of watts that are delivered to your electrical system. EnergyPro has remained consistent in that all of its systems use Enphase microinverters. Enphase has established itself as the leader in microinverter technology and it offers outstanding support in the rare event that a problem occurs. The company’s 25-year warranty is top in the industry and its inverters produce power at a very efficient rate. Enphase also offers an advanced monitoring system that enables users to see how its systems are working at any given moment. It produces real-world results and even offers email alerts if an issue arises. Currently Enphase’s M215 microinverter is the strongest inverter and can be paired safely with up to a 260-watt panel. Through the Enphase monitoring system dubbed “Enlighten,” viewers are able to track individual panel production. This tool is invaluable in helping EnergyPro Hawaii calculate the perfect amount of panels a prospective customer might need in a specific area to completely offset their electrical usage. By studying previously installed systems all over Oahu, EnergyPro Hawaii has found a very powerful combination utilizing Enphase’s M215 AUO/BenQ’s 260-watt, monocrystalline panel.

ENERGYPRO HAWAII In certain areas the company has seen an individual panel’s production reach 1.7 kW/H in a single day. Compared to other panel manufacturers that are installed — Samsung, Sanyo/Panasonic, SolarWorld, Solar Technologies, Trina, etc. — AUO/BenQ has proven to be one of the highest producing panels sold by the company. EnergyPro Hawaii can install almost any microinverter and brand of panel, but highly recommends AUO/BenQ. AUO/BenQ may be an unfamiliar name to some, but it is

Key steps to protect your countertops G ranite as a natural stone countertop will greatly enhance your kitchen or bath. Not only is it beautiful, it is also durable. However, because it comes from nature, it has some natural flaws and needs some maintenance to preserve its beauty. Granite is porous and, although very durable, still susceptible to scratches from certain materials. Protect against stains by sealing Applying a sealer will help protect your countertop from stains. Sealers close up the

pores in granite, preventing liquids from soaking in and staining. Granite sealers can be found at most home improvement stores and are fairly simple to use. Just apply, let sit, wipe and buff.To test your granite to see if resealing is needed, pour some water on your countertop and see if it soaks in by turning the area darker. If it beads up without turning dark and soaking in, the sealer is still in effect. Otherwise, resealing is needed. Although sealers help prevent stains, they can wear out over time, especially when your countertop is used often. It is good to

DA WING TRADING LLC contact // 847-3288 web // www.dawingtrading.com seal every two or three years. Keeping your granite countertop clean will help reduce the frequency of sealing. Cleaning up spills It is best to avoid spilling liquids on granite as it will wear down the sealer’s protection. However, in kitchens and baths, spills are inevitable. What to watch out for is spilling liquids that are high in acidity, or corrosive like lemon juice or heavy duty cleaners. To clean up spills, use a damp cloth or sponge. For tougher spills of oil or anything sticky, use mild soap and water. Always wipe your countertop dry, which also helps to prevent water marks.

Avoiding scratches While granite is very durable and practically scratch-resistant to utensils, there are some materials that can scratch granite. Diamonds are one material that can scratch virtually any surface and are used in granite fabrication. Also, some common abrasives found in scratch pads also can cause scratches on granite. To keep your granite scratch-free, avoid placing abrasive materials nearby.

But is your house really clean, or have you traded dirt and germs for caustic and toxic chemicals found in most conventional cleaning products? Even some so-called natural cleansers can contain these same or similar nasty ingredients. And you would know this only if the manufacturer practices full disclosure of ingredients on their labels, which is not required on home care products. Think about it, when was the last time you saw a full ingredient listing on your spray cleaner? The best way to make sure your living space is clean and healthy is to use safe, natural cleaning products you create yourself, using natural and inexpensive ingredients you can pick up at any natural grocery store. It's costeffective, not difficult and, like the task of spring cleaning itself, it's satisfying and rewarding. Whether you're shopping for prepared natural cleaning solutions or making your own, keep in mind that the word “aromatherapy” is now being applied to everything

scented — from dishwashing liquid to laundry detergent. The true practice of aromatherapy relies on using pure essential oils extracted from plants. These natural plant essences nurture us on mental, emotional, physical and even spiritual levels. House cleaning isn't exactly a spiritual exercise, but adding the effects and properties of essential oils to your homemade household products can enhance the experience and the effectiveness of your task. Essential oils have potent antimicrobial effects along with their clean, pleasant natural aromas. Here are a few “classic” homecare essential oils suggested by the experts at the leading aromatherapy company, Aura Cacia: lemon (clean, sweet, uplifting scent; deodorizing), peppermint (minty, fresh; air purifier; mild pest repellent), eucalyptus and tea tree (air and surface sanitizers; fresh, therapeutic aromas). For more information and eco-friendly cleaning tips, visit www.auracacia.com. This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

Great workmanship that’s set in stone BY WENDELL GUIEB have been a concrete contractor since 1990. I am the owner of W.G. Construction LLC, and my company does any sized project from small to big. We work from flat ground to the hardest area of your project, and still provide a reasonable price. I will make sure before starting the work that both parties understand the scope of work when installing concrete. Also, I will make sure to explain what the contract price is. When installing concrete, I will provide installation of base materials, the right compaction, installation of wire mess or rebar for reinforcement and I will pour the right psi (pounds per square inch) of concrete. What is important about installing concrete is following the right finishing procedure. I have worked with different general contractors as their sub-contractor doing concrete work, both commercial and residential. W.G. Enjoy the summer despite the heat D oes your family head outdoors to enjoy your lanai or deck during this time of year? Do they then turn around and head right back into the air-conditioned comfort when summer sun and temperatures make outdoor living spaces too hot to handle? “Strong sun, hot temperatures and high humidity can make spending time on your deck or patio too uncomfortable, no matter how much you love the outdoors. Homeowners are always looking for ways to get the most time in their outdoor living spaces, said Mark Dammeyer, director of exterior products for Somfy Systems. Here are some ideas for how you can make your outdoor living spaces cooler, more comfortable and enjoyable all summer long: Made in the shade Fun in the sun is one of summer's best benefits, but too much sun can keep you off your deck or patio. Not only does direct sun make it too hot to sit out, sun exposure can damage your patio furnishings, the deck itself and your skin. Retractable awnings are a

great — and great-looking — way to shield your outdoor living space from getting too much summer sun. Awnings offer sun protection that can enable you to enjoy your deck more on sunny days, and can even help lower cooling bills by shading window and glass deck doors. Retractable awnings mean you can enjoy the benefits whenever you need them, and hide them when you don't. Somfy Systems’ motorization solutions have made awnings even handier ; a motorized retractable awning effortlessly retracts with a touch of a button. And, an optional sensor, such as the Eolis 3DWirefree (TM) RTS, can detect wind and automatically roll up your awning — even if you’re not home. A Sunis WireFree (TM) RTS Sun Sensor can automatically extend your awning based on the sun's intensity. Simple innovative operating functions that adapt to your lifestyle. Wet wins the day When temperatures scorch, many of us head for the pool. Nothing cools and refreshes like a dip in the water. Adding a pool to your outdoor environment may not

be practical,so look for smaller-scale options that can lend the cooling power of water to your deck or patio. A simple outdoor fountain adds a splash of coolness and the soothing sound of moving water to your outdoor living space. Or, you can escalate your cooling efforts by installing a mister. You can find plenty of commercially available options that range from simple misting fans that connect to a garden hose to sophisticated systems that spread a light, refreshing spray over a large area.A sim-

ple online search will yield plenty of options, including some available at your neighborhood home improvement store. Evaporative coolers are another great way to use moisture to cool the air. While indoor air conditioners draw excess moisture from the air to aid in cooling, evaporative coolers use simple physics to cool air through evaporation of water. These coolers draw the heat neededtoevaporatewaterrightoutoftheair This article is courtesy of Brandpoint.

HydroFlow will make the good times roll S ummer is officially here and that always means more time at the beach, more time playing outdoors, and more time spent in the shower washing off the sweat and dir t that comes from good times. However, it’s not a good time for the hot-water heater struggling to keep up with the demand, the shower head that seems to be getting clogged faster and faster or those irritating white spots on the shower doors. If you’ve been noticing any or all of these problems, it’s time to talk to Harald von Sydow, director of Nano Tek-On LLC. Harald will explain how calcium deposits and lime scale are Hawaii’s bad-times boogeymen, building up the lime scale and calcium deposits in your home’s plumbing. The buildup causes the water to flow slower and slower and can eventually require a complete overhaul of your plumbing system. Before that happens, the buildup will be decreasing the performance of the hot-water heater — and all the other water-using appliances in your home. It actually puts the life of your hot-water heater at risk. If you have ever taken apart the shower head to see why the water wasn’t flowing through it, you’ve seen the buildup. Increase that many times over and that’s what’s going on throughout the plumbing system in your home. While this is happening, you are using (and wasting) much more water than usual, and your water bill is climbing. So are you doomed to live with all these problems or is there something that can be done other than moving to some unknown place (not in Hawaii) where there are no minerals in the water? Lucky you live Hawaii because this is where you can get the little unit called HydroFlow. Harald von Sydow can show you how HydroFlow works and how using the science of nanotechnology, HydroFlow breaks up existing lime scale and stops lime scale and calcium buildup. Nano Tek-On installs HydroFlow to the outside of your plumbing (no cutting of pipes) and then it goes to work to rid the pipes of corrosion and lime scale. HydroFlow is silent, doesn’t change the taste of your water and is environmentally safe. HydroFlow has no harmful side effects.

How to transform your bathtub for the better BY MICHELLE LEE

ISLAND BATH WORKS

s Hawaii’s middle-aged and older population increases, members of the community are taking a more proactive approach to ensure a longer and safer future. Helping seniors live independently within their own homes, Island Bath Works offers bathtub conversion, an innovative service that cuts out a portion of the bathtub side and creates a low and safe entryway. Walk-in tubs enable safe entry and exit in and out of the tub without major demolition or construction hassles. As the only business in the Islands to offer bathtub conversion, Island Bath Works has become par ticularly wellknown within the older community as residents prepare for old age. Kenneth Kuniyoshi, who lives in Mililani with his wife Arlene, recently took preventative measures against a potential accident and installed a walk-through bathtub with the company. “I am looking forward to my old age and realized that climbing over the bathtub

A

contact // 927-9228 web // www.islandbathworks.com would eventually become a problem for me,” said Kuniyoshi. To remedy his concern, Kuniyoshi called Eric Thompson, CEO of Island Bath Works, to schedule a bathtub conversion. “I was surprised how seamless and beautiful the bathtub came out,” said Kuniyoshi. “It looked like it was a custommade job.” Bathtub conversions can be easy to install and inexpensive Island Bath Works aims to complete each job as efficiently as possible with minimal interference to the homeowner’s personal lives. Because the conversion consists of converting the existing bathtub, major reconstruction or demolition of the bathroom is not necessary. The entire process typically requires only one day to

install, and customers may start using their new bathtubs the next day. Residents have the freedom to choose where to place the bathtub entryway for any desired size up to three feet. The conversion can be done on any type of bathtub whether it is made from fiberglass, cast iron or steel. Those who may be weary of moving forward with a bathtub conversion due to price concerns can take comfort in knowing that the process is substantially more inexpensive than most alternative options. “Before knowing about Island Bath Works, I looked into removing and replacing my bathtub entirely,” said Kuniyoshi. “The estimates I received were

Save

extremely expensive, significantly more than Island Bath Works.” “While most other companies will quote you anywhere between $12,000 to $15,000 to install a walk-in shower or sitin bathtub, our services achieve the same result with a high-quality finish for approximately 80 percent less,” said Thompson. Island Bath Works also offers tub and tile refinishing, which restores worn tubs to new condition. Refinished tubs have an integrated nonskid bottom for added safety. Furthermore, the durability of walk-in conversions are guaranteed with a lifetime warranty. A five-year warranty is included with tub and tile refinishing.

Universal design appeals to all emodeling trends may come and go, but one trend has evolved into an improved design movement focused on increasing accessibility for everyone in the home. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) recognizes universal design projects as proven design solutions for not only aging-in-place, but for families with special needs or anyone who wishes to move about his or her home freely, without barriers. Russell Long, president of Aloha Home Builders based in Eugene, Oregon, is a pioneer of universal design, remodeling his home to fit the accessibility needs of his 16-year-old son who was born with cerebral palsy. Though Long’s accessibility needs may be greater than others, he always communicates the benefit of universal design to all of his clients. “Most people don’t think about universal design until it’s too late,” he said. “A healthy person can be injured or need to care for a loved one who is aging, and suddenly, your needs have changed.” Long believes many of the design elements incorporated into his project, which won a 2012 Northwest Regional CotY Award in the Entire House $500,000 to $1,000,000 category with Universal Design Project Recognition, are convenient and luxurious, as well as functional and wheelchair accessible. For example, the universal design features from his project include:

• Hardwood flooring is superior over carpeting for wheelchair accessibility. Long removed all carpeting on the first floor and installed engineered hardwood flooring throughout the entire floor, only covering certain areas with rugs.

R

• Zero barriers, which mean there are no steps in the home, especially for entryways. All living quarters are on the first floor, with the exception of an upstairs area that was converted into an apartment with the purpose of housing a caregiver at some point. • Wide hallways, open living spaces and dual entries in all rooms are common design elements used in wheelchair accessibility. Long’s hallways are more than 5 feet wide, and living spaces are expanded so wheelchairs can move

• Ramped pool entrance is a unique design feature developed by Long to make it easier for his son to be transferred in and out of the pool safely. However, once installed, the ramped entrance doubles as a convenient bench for guests to sit on while they enjoy the pool.

The key to universal design, according to Long, is to come up with design solutions that address current needs and future needs down the road. “We tried to think of solutions that could easily be added or taken out if we needed them or decided to sell our home one day,” Long said. He also added a big misconception of universal design is that it looks institutional. “We research products and designs that blend functionality with beautiful aesthetics of a home, so that it never compromises a client’s style,” Long said. NARI is the source for homeowners seeking to hire a professional remodeling contractor because members are full-time, dedicated remodelers who follow a strict code of ethics that observes high standards of honesty, integrity and responsibility. Visit the NARI.org site to get tips on how to hire a remodeling professional. around furniture easily. Also, two entryways in all rooms — including the living room, dining room and kitchen — allows for ample traffic flow throughout the house.

This article is courtesy of Home Improvement News and Information Center.

• Microwaves drawer and/or refrigeration drawers are also common in universal design, but Long said it is also a stylistic feature for those who prefer to showcase beautiful cabinetry and granite countertops rather than the eye-sore of a microwave taking up counter space.

PACIFIC ISLANDS SOLAR

Are your solar panels up to par? R

ecently, an article was published in the New York Times titled “Solar Industry Anxious Over Defective Panels.” According to the article, there is a growing concern over the quality of materials and workmanship used in manufacturing photovoltaic panels. The issues regarding quality are being observed and reported to the extent that there is concern in the industry that they may disillusion the public’s view of a safe investment. The public’s general misconception is that every manufacturer’s quality is the same and that modules should be treated as a commodity. Pacific Islands Solar understands that there are differences in quality and feels that it is the company’s duty as a solar contractor to educate the public about those differences. The New York Times article can be viewed at Pacific Islands Solar’s website: pacificislandsconstruction.net. When choosing between different photovoltaic module manufacturers, be mindful of the differences in quality. Pacific Islands Solar has teamed up with Kyocera Solar to concentrate its efforts on educating consumers about the difference in quality between module manufacturers. As a Kyocera Diamond Preferred Partner, the company has proven to Kyocera that its installation quality matches the Kyocera 28 • JULY 7, 2013

total quality product delivery. At Pacific Islands Solar, its professionals believe that the only way to protect your solar investment is by going with a module manufacturer that has a proven track record of quality and performance. Kyocera has been manufacturing modules for more than 37 years, as opposed to most manufacturers that have less than 10 years of experience and are vertically integrated. From the production of silicon raw material to the assembly of module frames and everything in between, Kyocera maintains quality control over every aspect of the

manufacturing process and the results are proven by the following:

independent testing at Dessert Knowledge Australia.

• Kyocera is the first manufacturer to pass TUV Rheinland long-term sequential testing.

• In 10 years in Hawaii, Kyocera has never had a module returned as a defective product.

• It is one of only four manufacturers of 13 to clear a high voltage stress test with zero degradation conducted by the Fraunhofer Institute (modules were secretly acquired to ensure accurate test results).

Hawaii has one of the toughest environments for solar modules and it demands well made products that meet these conditions. Consumers are led to believe that their warranties will protect them if anything goes wrong, and these documents are written to protect the manufacturer, not the consumer. Read the exclusions and check the company’s financial strength because it may be out of business in a few short years. Pacific Islands Solar offers five years of free maintenance and cleaning with every purchase. It also offers a seven year guarantee that your roof will not leak. The company only uses the highest quality products rather than cheaper, lower-quality products, and it offers leasing, purchase and power purchase options. It has financing options available with no money down and no interest for two years. Call Pacific Islands Solar at 841-7756 to find out the difference prior to making a final decision for your solar needs. The company believes you will see the difference in what it offers.
