he automotive enthusiast scene is filled with thousands of owners with varying degrees of perspectives. Take Matt Oshima, for example, whose first car was a 1987 Acura Integra. He was just 12 at the time and his brother had taught him how to drive in a 1974 Toyota Corolla. In the next dozen years, he proceeded to rack up ownership of more than 51 cars. Today he’s 24, and to say that Oshima goes through cars like most people go through hats would be an understatement. Oshima has owned Hondas, Toyotas and Nissans, and not one of them was a domestic. He has hand-built everything from Corollas to Sentras to 240s. “I’ve never owned a domestic ... they’ve always been imports,” he says. I guess you could call him an import tuner in the truest sense of the world. In a very short amount of time, Oshima has paid his dues. He drifted a Honda Integra at Drift Session when he was 15. He’s plowed a perfectly streetable 1980 Toyota Corolla into a barrier at Hawaii Raceway Park. He has also custom-built a fully “turbo’d” Nissan Sentra from the ground up. His Facebook page is full of photos of

the various vehicles he’s owned in his short lifetime. Truth be told, I’d be happy with just one from his stack of photos. Unfortunately, the loss of the track has affected Oshima greatly. “When the track closed, I sold all of my cars,” he says. When selling modified vehicles, the realization is that you’ll never get what you put into it. It’s a lose-lose situation. In fact, Oshima’s former passion for tuning has taken a slightly

hands-off approach. For example, he didn’t build the current beauty staring back at you on these pages. In many ways, he’s become more of a collector, a connoisseur of cars, if you will. “I don’t build cars anymore,” he tells me. “I get bored too quickly and I go through cars like it’s going out of style.” Gavin Correia, who placed nine years of work into the vehicle’s build time, built Oshima’s 1986 Toy-
ota Corolla SR5. In a sense, this article is also a tribute to Correia and an example of how different car owners can be while still sharing the same love of automotive performance. Oshima has simply added a few choice pieces here and there to make it his own. When asked why he chose the SR5, Oshima simply says, “It’s fun to drive. I’d rather have a low-powered Hachi than a 400HP 240. It’s just to have fun.”

The cockpit is purposeful with a Momo steering wheel and SDS computer while the engine bay is crammed with a 16v 4AGE with shocking blue individual throttle bodies. It’s a gorgeous ride. You may think that Oshima doesn’t value the rides he drives — when in fact, he does. He runs the vehicles the way they were meant to be driven, and has done so from the first day he got behind the wheel as a youth. The saying “Built, Not Bought” doesn’t matter at all to Oshima because he’s honest with his own viewpoint. “I’m just a driver,” he says. “It doesn’t make sense to be anything more than that.”
This SR5 is one of the cleanest Corollas I’ve seen. It pops with a super-red shine that is almost blinding. Accented by Sprinter tail-lights and JDM bumpers, the car is clean and purpose- built. DOS SANTOS STOPS MIR, KEEPS UFC HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
by GREG BEACHAM | AP SPORTS WRITER LAS VEGAS (AP) — When a state athletic commission official asked Frank Mir where he was between rounds, he named the wrong casino. That’s a pretty good indication Junior Dos Santos’ punches already were doing their job. The UFC’s heavyweight champion knew exactly where he was and what he was doing — and Dos Santos swiftly showed Mir the door. Dos Santos flattened Mir with a huge right hand and finished him on the ground at 3:04 of the second round last Saturday, emphatically defending his belt at UFC 146. Dos Santos (15-1) picked apart the two-time ex-champion with superior boxing throughout the fight, eventually sending Mir stumbling onto his back before finishing him with one last blow to the head. Dos Santos then wrapped himself in the Brazilian flag while celebrating his first title defense since taking the belt from Cain Velasquez last fall. “I’m feeling awesome!” the ever-smiling Dos Santos shouted to the proBrazilian crowd. “It’s not bad for a nice guy, huh? ... Frank Mir is a really good fighter, too. I came here to defend my belt, and I did it.” Mir was staggered by multiple blows, including a big body shot, late in the first round, and he barely made it to the bell. After declaring he was at the Mandalay Bay instead of the MGM Grand Garden, Mir was allowed to keep fighting — but the beating didn’t go on much longer. “My game plan is always to keep the fight on my feet and go for the knockout,” Dos Santos said. “I tried to get him a little tired in the first round, and then go for it. When you believe so much in your performance and yourself, it happens.” Velasquez stopped Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva late in the first round after administering a bloody beating that both thrilled and horrified fans. Roy Nelson, Stipe Miocic and Stefan Struve also won

on a pay-per-view card topped with five heavyweight fights, a first in UFC history. Dos Santos never faced trouble in the fight’s eight minutes after easily avoiding an opening-minute takedown attempt by Mir, who hoped his superior jiu-jitsu skills would allow him to avoid Dos Santos’ unparalleled striking ability. Mir, who turned 33 on Thursday, has the most heavyweight victories in UFC history, but he couldn’t match Dos Santos’ skills. “He’s a champ,” Mir said. “He’s fast. I couldn’t get out of the way. He hit me hard. There were just too many of them, and they were hard shots. I couldn’t do anything about it.” Mir stumbled back several steps after Dos Santos’ decisive right hand. Dos Santos followed him and added one last head shot before referee Herb Dean saved Mir. “That surprised me a lot,” Dos Santos said. “Man, this guy can take a punch. My hand is hurt.” Dos Santos downplayed the revenge element of beating Mir, who broke the arm of Dos Santos’ mentor, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, in a fight last December.
Mir (16-6) had won three straight fights since losing a title shot to Shane Carwin in March 2010, but couldn’t reclaim the belt he held in 2004 before
Antonio Silva, left, has blood wiped from his face after losing by knockout to Cain Velasquez during a UFC 146 heavyweight bout last Saturday in Las Vegas, Nev. AP Photo/Julie Jacobson
getting into a serious motorcycle accident and again in early 2009 before losing to Brock Lesnar. Velasquez (10-1) finished Silva at 3:36 of the first round, but only after pulverizing the 6-foot-4 Brazilian with a relentless series of blows after an early takedown. Silva (16-4) was cut on his face early in the beating, sending streams of blood down his face and onto the canvas, eventually coating both fighters’ torsos. “I knew he was going to be a tough guy to finish, and he posed certain threats,” Velasquez said. “But I’m happy I was able to go in there and perform. I took my time and waited to get good position to turn it on and finish the fight.” The fight was stopped once to allow Silva’s corner to clear the blood from his eyes, but Velasquez promptly resumed the beating until the fight was finished. The former Arizona State wrestler was ferociously impressive in his first bout since losing the belt to Dos Santos in just 64 seconds during the UFC’s first prime-time Fox show. “What you’ve done in the past, you’ve got to get over that,” Velasquez said. “This is a step in the right direction.” The 32-year-old Silva appeared to be outmatched in his UFC debut after a lengthy MMA career highlighted by his dominant Strikeforce victory over Fedor Emelianenko in February 2011. Nelson (18-7) added another impressive stoppage victory to his list, catching Dave Herman (21-4) with an overhand right that sent him sprawling backward onto the canvas. Nelson landed one more shot before the fight was stopped, and then climbed onto the cage to rub his ample belly while his hometown crowd cheered. “My plan was to wrestle, (but) my coaches had a different game plan, which was, ‘Hit him in the face,’” Nelson said. “Guess it worked. Clearly my hands have dynamite in them, or small rocks or whatever.” Nelson had lost three of his previous four fights, including decisions to Dos Santos and Mir. But the portly, heavily bearded heavyweight — who bills himself as a kung fu fighter — is consistently popular and entertaining.

“S
upremacy MMA Unrestricted” is, without a doubt, the best mixed martial arts game in Playstation Vita’s library. Unfortunately, that’s partly because it’s also the only one. And while some MMA action is better than nothing, there’s enough working against “Unrestricted” to temper the enthusiasm serious fans may have for the sport’s Vita debut. Most glaring is the uphill battle against UFC’s and EA Sports’ games for fighter name recognition — a problem “Unrestricted” arguably eschews by opting for a mostly fictional roster of fighters based on real-life fighters whom casual fans likely wouldn’t recognize anyway. The fictional roster allows “Unrestricted” to take liberty and give most fighters a unique storyline to complete. The stories are short and won’t win awards for creativity. But it’s an angle the other games can’t take, especially with a level of grit that doesn’t always flatter the fighters. The cutscenes, distilled through voice-acted motion comics, look and sound good, too. “Unrestricted” also breaks convention by including woman fighters, and here it does opt for real-life fighters.
Problem is, only two — Felice Herrig and Michele Gutierrez — are included, and they can only fight each other. Unsurprisingly, their storylines wrap after 10 minutes because there’s nowhere else for them to go. The actual act of fighting is a similar case of enticing and off-putting, though it doubtlessly will lean toward
the latter for MMA purists. Like its peers, “Unrestricted” accommodates multiple fight disciplines (wrestling, kickboxing, JiuJitsu and so on) and provides the necessary means for ground, standing, striking and submission combat. Different fighters succeed differently based on their disciplines: Focusing on strikes if you’re a submission specialist will, for instance, probably end poorly. Unlike its peers, “Unrestricted” distills its action through what essentially re-
sembles a non-MMA fighting game. You get a life bar, and the only way to win a fight is to drain your opponent’s life bar. An opportunistic counterattack will hurt more than a plain strike, but there’s no way to thread the timing needle and land one perfect punch that turns a losing contest into a knockout victory. Similarly, the only way
to make an opponent tap out is to perform a submission when his life bar is already near zero. “Unrestricted” rewards players for focusing on specific body parts by giving attacks on weakened areas a damage premium, but the facets of a tense MMA fight — both on the technical side and the thrilling, this-canturn-in-an-instant side — are dampened when the life bar rules all. “Unrestricted” also mimics fighting games by taking place almost exclusively on a 2D plane. You can move more
freely to change stances during a ground attack, but when both fighters are upright, they’re always facing each other without any means to circle around and use the octagon. These aren’t minor shortcomings if you want a trueblue MMA experience and not a fighting game with MMA trimmings. But if you can settle for the latter, “Unrestricted” at least does that pretty well. Its handling of multiple disciplines certainly suffices, and each fighter has a nice complement of moves he performs merely adequately as well as expertly. You can mix button and touch controls freely — escaping submissions is ideal with touch, while basic attacks work best with buttons — and pretty much every move has a weak spot that can be countered and reversed if you time it correctly. “Unrestricted” also performs sufficiently in the features department. Along with storylines for 14 fighters, the 16 male fighters each have separate upgrade paths that unlock customization bonuses. A training mode and two tournament styles round out the single-player options. A no-frills multiplayer option (two players, local/online) is available as well, but attempts to find an online match (and sometimes even connect to the server) proved unsuccessful.
