Flying under the radar with GMC’s own rock star

A
t 20,310 feet of elevation, Alaska’s Mount Denali is the tallest peak in North America. In automotive terms, the GMC Yukon Denali is equally formidable and makes you wonder if you and up to seven other passengers couldn’t actually power this luxo-rig to the mountain’s summit. Creating the Denali or the longer (by 20 inches) Denali XL begins with your not-so-basic Yukon, which is a near clone of the Chevrolet Tahoe/ Suburban duo. From that point, the Yukon grille is swapped out for a more elegantly styled mesh version that’s similar to what’s used in other Denali-trimmed models such as the full-size Sierra pickup and Acadia and Terrain wagons. Climb aboard — a process made easier by the optional power-operated running boards that roll out from beneath the rocker panels to greet you when you open the doors — and you enter a world of serious opulence. leather, heated and cooled in front and heated for the second row bench or buckets. The dashboard is fitted with an eight-inch touch-screen display and is awash in genuine wood and aluminum trim. Also impressive is a giant-size floor console that looks about as large as the trunks in some compact cars. Lastly, Denali drivers get power-adjustable pedals
and a heated steering wheel. To covert the Denali from passenger to cargo hauler, both power-folding second- and standard third-row seats can create a cavernous area. Opt for the Denali XL if you absolutely must have more room. The one major advantage to selecting the Denali over your run-ofthe-mill Yukon model can be found under the hood. The standard powerplant is a 6.2-liter V-8 that makes 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. By contrast, the standard Yukon makes do with a 5.3-liter V-8 rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet. Mind you, with 5,500 pounds of curb weight to deal with, the Denali needs all the muscle it can get, especially when carrying payloads weighing up to 1,600 pounds or towing up to 8,400 pounds. The 6.2 benefits from the companion eight-speed automatic transmission that delivers buttery smooth shifts. The 5.3 makes do with six cogs. The eight-speed, plus the program that shuts down half of the cylinders under light-load conditions, helps the Denali achieve mpg ratings of 15 in the city and 22 on the highway. That’s only marginally better than the Yukon’s 5.3liter V8.
Readily apparent is the Denali’s extra-quiet cabin and a ride that’s decidedly on the compliant side. Acoustic glass, triple-sealed doors and a system that cancels out unwanted noises do their job, while magnetic ride control (the dampers constantly adjust according to road conditions) make for a less-jarring experience. Denali pricing starts at $66,500 for rear-wheel-drive models and $69,500 for four-wheel-drive versions (including destination charges). For that money you get tri-zone climate control, navigation system, 10-speaker Bose-brand audio system, power rear liftgate, 20-inch wheels
Living large and luxurious, it gets even more spacious inside when the second- and third-row seats are dropped (PHOTO: GENERAL MOTORS) and a full suite of active safety aids designed to help prevent a crash. The minimal list of options includes a power sunroof, rear-seat entertainment system and 22-inch wheels. Ultimately, the Denali’s combination of ruggedness, roominess and top-drawer luxury and safety content is hard to beat.

by Ray Magliozzi What could be the cause of car’s epically crazy gas consumption? Dear Car Talk: I live in Kigali, Rwanda. I have a 1995 Toyota RAV4 two-door with an automatic transmission with 132,000 kilometers on it. It had, at some point, been converted from right-hand drive to left-hand drive, before being imported. It has crazy gas consumption --I get one kilometer per liter! The air is really dusty here; the car is covered with red dust all the time. Could this dust be clogging the filters and causing increased gas consumption? Could the odometer be running slow, so it is not recording accurately? Any thoughts, suggestions or advice? Help! Thanks. -- Anne Wow. That’s some epically lousy mileage, Anne. Congratulations. According to our metric-to-English
conversion chart, you’re getting about 2.5 miles per gallon. That low enough to make a 2003 Escalade jealous. We don’t work on a lot of African RAV4s, Anne. While all the RAV4s we see are fuelinjected, it’s possible yours is carbureted to make it simpler to fix. We don’t know. But here are a few things that come to mind: If you have a carburetor, one thing I’d suspect is a very filthy air filter. That won’t affect your mileage if the car is fuel-injected, but without computerized engine management, the dust could clog up the air filter enough to throw off the fuel-air mixture and cause gasoline to pour into the carburetor. If you remove the air filter and hold it up to the sun, you should be able to see light coming through it -- looking the long way. If you can’t, it’s plugged up. Then you’d call Kigali Toyota and get a new filter. Or, if that’s not an option, you’d find someone with an air compressor, blow the dust out

of the filter and reuse it. You may have to do that every few weeks if it’s as dusty as you say it is. It’s simple enough to try that as a test. You replace the filter, or clean it well, put it back in and see what your mileage is. But do resist the temptation to take out the filter and leave it out. Because then all that red dust will scratch your cylinder walls and ruin the engine. Then, for every kilometer, you’ll be burning one liter of fuel and one liter of oil. If the air filter’s not plugged up, then the mechanical fuel pump could be the culprit. The diaphragms in those pumps can fail, sending 25 percent of the fuel to the carburetor and the other 75 percent onto the ground. And the stuff that’s on the ground won’t help your gas mileage. If your RAV4 is indeed fuelinjected, then you’ve got to look for a leak somewhere. Or a thief. Maybe a locking gas cap will solve your problem? Good luck, Anne.

car purchases, a Buick and a Ford: They take the car in the back, out of sight, and they keep it quite a while. They tell me they are “just cleaning it up.” But it doesn’t look any cleaner. Are they removing something I purchased on the car? Are they dismantling a theft monitor, something required by the government or their insurance company? What are they doing to my car once I have purchased it? Thanks for any insight into this puzzle. Love your column, love your show, great sense of humor, and I trust your opinions. Thanks. -- Anita What are they doing? They’re depreciating it by about 30 percent. Seriously, I don’t know what they’re doing. I’ve never been present during this mysterious process. I’m guessing that they do wash it. And they probably clean the glass, inside and out. They remove the plastic coverings that protect interior parts from getting coffee stains on them while other people test-drive the car. They probably check the tire pressure and the battery output. They may set the navigation system for your region so the first time you use it, it doesn’t ask you, “What part of Manitoba would you like to visit?”
They put your license plates on it, and make sure the oil and windshield-washer fluid are topped off. They may install whatever last-minute accessories they talked you into -- like the down-filled velour floor mats. They even might drive it down the street and put some gas in it. If the car’s been sitting on the lot for a while, it also might need a software update, or even a technical service bulletin repair taken care of. And there are two possible reasons why it takes so long. One is that the 19-year-old kid who is in charge of removing the Saran Wrap from the door sills is busy or out to lunch. So the car sits there for half an hour until he gets back. The other possibility is that it gives the “finance office” an extra 45 minutes to sell you an extended warranty and some gold-plated fuzzy dice. But I don’t know for sure, Anita. Maybe some of our readers who are dealers can tell us exactly what they do during this final delivery inspection. Fellas? Gals? Does my description sound about right? Got a question about cars? Chicago native Brian Mallin has spent the past few years finishing his degree as an engineer here in paradise. Much like his college education, his first ever classic muscle car has been quite the learning experience. Mallin grew up modifying choppers alongside his father before moving on to dune buggies, which allowed him to learn the ropes of customization. But little did he know how far into the automobile world he would go after picking up this gorgeous 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger three years ago — and watching it literally blow up on him while driving home one day. Mallin took the mishap in stride and decided it was his mission to bring this classic piece of Americana back to life. Since diving headlong into the auto world, Mallin and his Dodge Dart have been through two motors and three transmissions. Currently, the motor and tranny have less than 800 miles on them. It’s a Mopar 360-bored .030-inch mated with a TorqueFlite 727 tranny, and featuring the installation of a 2500 stall and shift kit. Also installed are an all-aluminum radiator, a Holley Blue electric fuel pump and a 750 double pump carb with mechanical secondaries. A Holley double pump carb with mechanical secondaries is combined with a Edelbrock
Performer RPM Intake manifold as well as J Heads, Hooker Competition Headers and an MSD Ready-To-Run distributor. Mallin has no qualms about doing the work himself, even though the Dodge Dart represented his first big attempt at modifying an automobile. The entire car was primered and painted pearl white in his garage with a little help from his uncle. The car gleams in the light and the paint really helps it stand out. The rear wing definitely adds to the bodylines. Mallin fabricated a new cross member to clear the trans tunnel while also upgrading the suspension to air shocks. The rear is 8 ¾ posi with 3.91 gearing while the ride intentionally runs high to avoid the nasty potholes that can damage the underside. This ride is a great effort to preserve the classic muscle car look, and it has heart, too. According to Mallin, this car is a reminder of the good times he spent with his father.
