o you sometimes wish that wealth and prosperity would flow into your life more effortlessly? If so, implement some basic feng shui concepts to energize your home and attract increased “wealth energy. When it comes to our state of wealth, I see both ends of the spectrum. Some people have no trouble at all with their finances while others never seem to have enough. If you spend money faster than it comes in or if you find that you desire things but have insufficient money to pay for them, enhancing your wealth with feng shui may be the key.

Find your home’s “wealth corner When standing at the front door of your home, facing in, the wealth area is in the far left corner. If you have an irregularly shaped home and are unclear about exactly where your wealth corner is, you can find one in each room. You determine where the wealth corner is by standing in the doorway of the room and looking toward the far left corner. How to turn your first home into a decorator’s showcase
W
hether you’ve signed a lease agreement or purchased a house, moving into your first home is an exciting time. For many people, it’s their first opportunity to express their personal style by decorating their own space. Whatever your taste — contemporary or classic, modern or rustic — you want your first home’s interior decor to look polished and put-together. And you’d probably rather not spend a bundle achieving that look. Do-it-yourself home decor is popular for exactly those reasons. By doing the design and implementation yourself, you can save a lot of money. Plus, many people find that doing it themselves makes decorating their homes an even more personal and rewarding experience. So where do you start if you want to turn your first home into a decorator’s showcase? Focusing on a few key areas can yield high-impact results. Start with the walls; they’re the largest design element in any room, and repainting them is an easy, high-payoff way to

begin redecorating. Choose colors that not only speak to you, but that also make sense with key furniture pieces you already have. For example, if you have a great sofa that you love, consider choosing a color or two from the pattern and using that on the walls. Another smart paint strategy is to do three walls in a restful, neutral color and then spice things up with a more vibrant hue on a fourth “accent” wall. Whatever color you choose, remember to buy the best quality paint you can afford. It will last longer and look great. Another option for dressing up your walls is to use removable murals. Wall murals are a favorite design trick of interior decorators. Repositionable murals, like MuralsYour Way.com’s SmartStick line, make it easy to decorate with a mural — minus the commitment or expense of having one professionally painted. The moisture-resistant murals can be placed and then repositioned anywhere in the house, even the bathroom or kitchen (where Mediterranean wall murals are hugely popular).
• New Gutters • Reroofing • New Roofs • Repairs
Once you’ve gussied up your walls, it’s time to look down and think about the floor. Flooring is the second largest design element in a room, and it forms the foundation for your other design decisions. If you’ve got the budget and the gumption, you can remove and replace old carpet, re-stain worn wood and retile dated floors. If your means and your DIY skills are more modest, you can always cover up unappealing carpet with throw rugs that speak to your tastes. Carpet tiles also are a great way to get the look and feel of
new carpet without the expense and installation challenges of wall-to-wall. And bathrooms and kitchens can both benefit from a new flooring of easy-to-install vinyl tiles. Finally, accessories are the icing on the cake when it comes to your interior decor. Even if your furniture is mature, you can make it look young again with new accent pillows and slipcovers. It’s possible to find reasonably priced artwork to fit nearly every design theme these days, whether you look
online or hit one of the big box home design stores. Window treatments are another accessory that will give you more bang for the buck. You can get a designer look for less when you dress up cheap, store-bought panels with some personal touches. Turning your first home into a decorator’s showcase doesn't have to cost a lot. A sense of adventure, some creativity and the willingness to do the work yourself can have your home looking like something from a TV interior design show in no time.

T
hink traditional styling is only for opulent mansions and stuffy country clubs? Well, think again. Traditional design is not only extremely accessible to incorporate into any home, but according to research by the National Kitchen & Bath
If the idea of transforming a large room into a traditionally styled one seems overwhelming, start on a smaller scale, like in the master bathroom. Keep the cabinets and counters neutral and add some glamour with the wall and accent colors. Favored shades in traditional decorating are jewel tones, like topaz and golds; deep reds and rose quartz; marine blues and vibrant greens. Use accessories like embroidered towels,
bronze or iron bath accessory ensembles and potpourri bowls as the perfect finishing touches. Another great way to add traditional flair to your bath is with elegant and elaborate fixtures. Look for a faucet with unique and detailed design elements, like the new Weymouth bathroom collection from Moen. From the Europeaninfluenced decorative script on the porcelain inlays to the refined top finial, this collection definitely stands apart. And just because you’re incorporating stylish, traditional items doesn’t mean you have to skimp on modern functionality or features. You can reduce water usage by up to 32 percent, thanks to a water-saving aerator. Tie the whole space together by selecting an Old World finish, such as Oil Rubbed Bronze, and you’ll create a tra-
ditional suite that's comforting and classic.
Difference in the details One of the best ways to add traditional style throughout your entire home is with architectural details, like moldings, chair rails or ceiling medallions. It’s easier to add these elements — and at a reasonable price. Peel and stick crown molding from Easy Crown Molding allows you to add the luxurious look of custom molding to your home. In less than one hour — and without tools — you can complete an entire room. Simply pick your desired trim style and width and get started. Lush fabrics are also key to achieving a traditional look and feel in these spaces. But don’t be afraid of the elegance found in traditional decor. Silks, satins, velvets and brocades are going
to be your go-to fabrics for pillows and upholstered furniture. Be sure to stay away from solids — mixing coordinating patterns, like florals, stripes and scrolling, add even more richness. Don’t forget to make a statement with your windows, too — hang draperies that are full and heavy, and be sure to tie them back with ornate tassels for a look that is unmistakably traditional. It’s often easy to find great traditional pieces at affordable prices at department stores. From pillows to curtains, bedding and even furniture, your local department store is one of the best places to start your traditional search.
Bringing traditional styling to your home is much easier — and more accessible — than you think. With the right updates and additions to your space, you’ll achieve a look that’s timeless and refined. For more information about the new Weymouth collection from Moen, visit moen.com.

re you getting hot under the collar about rising energy costs? If so, it’s probably time to evaluate how you keep your home cool. With the right knowledge you can keep cool and save money, all while enhancing your home’s appearance. For example, ceiling fans use less energy than air conditioners and add character to rooms. When used exclusively or with an air conditioner set at a higher-than-usual temperature, ceiling fans are a great power and money saver. “For greatest energy efficiency, choose a new ceiling fan with a DC motor,” says Jeff Dross, corporate director of education and industry trends for Kichler Lighting. “Your electric bill will be a lot more affordable.” For rooms with high ceilings, use a down rod to position the fan closer to the living space. But don’t be fooled into thinking that a bigger, more powerful motor is better. The motor should be the right size for the fan. Longer blades with a greater pitch require
more power than shorter blades situated at less of an angle. Many ceiling fans also feature single or multiple lights that can be used to supplement room light. But don’t make your fan your room’s only light source. Layers of light, created by task and accent lighting, are best for creating beautiful, functional spaces. For outdoor locations, semi-enclosed patios and even for bathrooms, look for fans that are approved for use in damp or wet locations. These fans often feature stainless steel mounting hardware, a hot dip galvanized undercoat, a special finish that resists weathering, and blades of a composite material rather than wood so they won’t deteriorate and will last for years. But you don’t have to focus solely on function when choosing fans. Fan styles today range from Victorian and Old World to sleek modern or contemporary. With the right knowledge you can create a comfortable and energy-efficient home.

Placing non-functioning items anywhere in your home represents a block to the flow of energy. Get rid of them in order to get your wealth working for you again. To help lift the energy of your home, make sure the wealth corner is well-lit, and remove dust, dirt, grime, disorganization and dead or dying plants from the area.
Use purple, red, green or gold When addressing your wealth corner, first think purple, a strong color that is associated with wealth, but also consider red, green and gold. Use an assortment of items, ranging from stones (purple amethyst, for example) to bedspreads, table runners, curtains, wall hangings or anything with these colors to help put energy into wealth manifestation.
Use symbols of wealth Have things in your home that symbolically remind you of wealth — real or imitation currency, a piggy bank, change holder, jewelry box or gold coins (chocolate gold coins, for example). What symbolizes wealth to you? Photos of luxury homes, exotic locations or a dream car may give you wealthy thoughts.
It’s not all about money
Add a water source Water is associated with movement and finances and is a way to get things “flowing.” So, in your wealth corner, place items that are symbolic of water — a fountain, photos of water or even a
fish bowl. If you use a fountain, be sure the water flows toward the center of the room. Avoid excess water in the bedroom though, as it can overstimulate emotions.
Important notes
Most people associate wealth with finances, but wealth is a much broader concept. It also is related to the blessings we receive in our lives, even in the midst of challenges. It is about experiencing “profit” in the form of health, good news, opportunities or a positive turn of events. Appreciation and gratitude for what already exists helps bring continued flow.

The home of exquisite flooring Y ou may be one of the many Hawaii homeowners who have thought about replacing an old floor or dirty carpets with new wood or tile flooring. But are you a bit overwhelmed by the choices, mainly because you don’t quite know what those
choices are all about? Well, according to Shirley Pai Hilton of Pacific Imports International, you are not alone. “What we notice most about the people who call or come into our showroom is their great need for information,” said Hilton. “We can literally
spend hours with a particular customer, educating them on the different types of wood and stone flooring, each product’s features, functions, and benefits, and also give them tips on what might best suit their decorating taste. It’s an essential part of helping the customer
make a decision that they will be happy with!” For example, did you know that those lines between the planks of wood flooring are called a micro-bevel and what its purpose is? Did you know that the top layer of wood on an engineered floor has

One is to use flooring to cover the riser and a majority of the tread, and to add a bullnose or stairnose to the edge of each step. The other is to use whole fabricated pieces, call stair treads, and their companions, risers. Similar to a wooden cutting board, each piece is cut to fit and placed onto your step. The company that fixes it all W
alker-Moody Construction, which specializes in asphalt maintenance, can take any driveway or commercial property and give the existing asphalt or concrete a fresh look. And with more than 100 years of service in Hawaii under its belt, Walker-Moody Construction has the experience to get any job done. So, what are you waiting for? Sometimes when you look at your asphalt or concrete, you may like it’s in good shape. But if there’s cracking, you shouldn’t let these problems go untreated! The best time for sealing is as soon as possible after a crack develops. A crack can continue to widen, so crack sealing must be continued to be effective. Failure to seal cracks properly may lead to further and more severe pavement damage from water intrusion. Walker-Moody Construction is an authorized installer of SealMaster Hawaii. SealMaster offers a variety of cold- or hot-applied products to seal what you have. Sealing cracks with Walker-Moody’s products is relative-
ly simple and inexpensive, and can delay major maintenance if properly used. To repair cracks in your pavement or concrete, there are a couple of steps: First, you need to clean the cracks so they are free of grass or any other loose debris. Second, make sure the surface is dry. Third, apply cold crack filler such as Acrylic Crack Filler (1 gallon) or hot-crack filler such as CrackMaster PL (flexible parking lot formula). If a cold filler is applied, it needs to cure for a few hours. But if a hot filler is used, the area can be opened for vehicular traffic within five minutes. For a free estimate, contact WalkerMoody Construction at 839-2781. Company representatives will come out and review your property, measure the asphalt for accuracy, provide recommendations in a formal proposal and deliver your project on-time and on-budget. Whether you want a quick fix or a long-term solution, give the professionals at Walker-Moody a call because they can fix it all.

Tropical’s commitment to green T
ropical Wholesale and its owner Matthew Houar with brother Michael, son Michael and nephew Matthew have been doing business in Hawaii for more than 30 years. Tropical has been the Sam’s Club contractor for more than 10 years. Tropical always has been a green company representing lifetime products. Tropical has been doing photovoltaic for almost five years now with all its other products. Tropical’s photovoltaic or electric solar started more than five years ago after the HBO special about how bad WalMart and Sam’s Clubs (Sam’s Club is owned by WalMart and is named after Sam Walton, the founder of WalMart) were for the environment. At the time, WalMart decided all products would now be green. WalMart did all the research and development and used four of the oldest dealers in the U.S. to test the product — of which Tropical Wholesale in Hawaii was one. These dealers were picked because they all are located in sunny climates. All contractors went to training and surprisingly what was learned was to be as green as you can before installing panels on rooftops. Here’s how you too can be green:

2. Change windows and doors, especially if you have A/C units. After all this, wait to see the changes in your electric bill. Hopefully, you as a consumer also will be more proactive using less electricity. Now you as a homeowner are ready to look at electric solar. Because electric solar is the most expensive way to save on electricity. Most other solar companies will not tell you to do this. This is because mostly you as a homeowner will see salesmen. Their job is to sell customers as many panels as possible to make the commissions. A perfect and recent example was an old customer who called the company. Tropical Wholesale had worked on his home 16 years before,
and the homeowner wanted help before his electric solar system was installed. Plus he wanted the tax credits. He was very proud to be going green. Tropical Wholesale asked the owner four questions and received the following answers: 1) How much is your electric bill? Answer: $300. 2) Have you taken steps

3) How much did it cost? Answer: $68,000. 4) How many panels? Answer: 28. The company was shocked. In short, the owner had been ripped off. This is going on every day in Hawaii. Just because we have the best tax credits in
the U.S. (30 percent federal and 35 percent state to $5,000 for residential) every salesmen this side of the world has come to Hawaii to sell solar. And soon in 2015 when all the tax credits are gone, so are the salesmen. All these salesmen come with the fancy computers giving readouts on what the electric solar systems will produce, but what they do not tell you is all those pro-
grams are set for mainland production expectations or 4 and 1/2 hours a day production. Now who in Hawaii gets only 4 and 1/2 hours of sun a day? So this computes to selling consumers more panels and making salesmen more commission. So be green and akamai when searching for the right company. you can extend your protective coating to the rest of the flat roof. That is the beauty of roof coatings as opposed to oldfashioned asphalt roofing — you can do limited areas now and then tie them all together later when they start to deteriorate. LeakMaster’s Ceramic Titanium coatings block 100 percent of the sun’s UV rays so your old roof is preserved. You never have to tear off the old roof, just put on a new top coat every seven to 15 years.
3. If Your Old Roof Is Too Far Gone, Install A New System With A Long Warranty. If you have a
sloped roof, LeakMaster installs all major systems including shake, shingle, tile, metal and asphalt. After the solar contractors are finished, LeakMaster will come back and waterproof all your roof penetrations for no extra charge. If you have a flat roof, LeakMaster can install either a fabric re-enforced coating, such as Hawaiian Sunguard or a Siliconebased coating that may qualify for a 10-, 15- or even 20-year manufacturer labor and material warranty, depending on your roof. For commercial roofs, you may consider a heavy duty single-ply system, such as Duro-Last, which

to be thick enough, but not too thick? Do you know what acclimation is? Or what the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile is? Hilton attempts to answer a lot of these questions at Pacific Imports International’s free flooring seminars. The next session will be held Nov. 19 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the company’s Kalihi showroom. The program will start with very basic information on the various types
of wood, stone and tile flooring on the market and also will cover matters related to installation, maintenance and cost. Speakers also will touch on environmentally friendly products and native Hawaiian woods. “People always walk away very happy with the information that they gain, and the feedback has been incredibly positive! If you are looking for new flooring, you should definitely attend,” said Hilton. Home to the famous Kahala Floors line of
beautiful engineered wood flooring made especially for Hawaii, Pacific Imports International invites homeowners to come down and experience the beautiful, spacious showroom while enjoying refreshments and receiving a great education in flooring choices. And most important, the private sale pricing given to seminar attendees is the lowest given anywhere by Pacific Imports. Call 847-7711 to reserve your seat for the upcoming seminar.

here are so many things to consider and do before, during and after a renovation. The right contractor will help you through everything from beginning to end. That is the key to a successful renovation. You can piece everything on your own to maybe save a little money, but is that really worth the headache of having to coordinate everything every day and making sure everyone is on the schedule for the project? Having a contractor control the flow of the project will help make sure the project goes according to plan and finishes within the time promised. CV Construction LLC is just that type of company. For example, a recent project involved a homeowner and serviceman who, just before he was
deployed, contacted me and inquired about our services. When I went to complete the free estimate, he had already been deployed, so his wife walked me through their renovation request. I then drafted an estimate on site and sat down with the homeowner’s wife and explained the estimate from beginning to end. I then requested she talk things over with her husband before deciding whether the estimate fit their budget. After a few email exchanges between myself and the deployed husband, the couple settled on what they wanted to complete in their renovation. I had the wife come to our showroom to look at some samples and finalize the contract. We then signed the contract and went shopping for their appliances. Everyone has different tastes when it comes to materials and appliances.

While shopping, I gave her my opinions and ideas of what have been the most popular items that would fit her budget. We settled on what she wanted and had the items delivered. As with all renovations, there were bumps along the way. I helped the couple through these bumps by maintaining contact with both the husband and wife. It was a great pleasure helping this family with something that would have been a nightmare if the wife tried to handle the project on her own. CV Construction LLC strives to exceed the expectations of the homeowner with each project. We maintain an open line of communication with our clients so there are no surprises, and always strive to help our homeowners by saving them time and money. Treating all homeowners like our own family is among the things we do well. Our clients entrust us with
one of the most important investments, their homes, so we treat every project like we are renovating our own place. We have two specials going on right now.
