get some of my best inspiration from the great outdoors. Whether it’s the shade of a flower, the pattern on a leaf or the texture of a strip of bark, I’m a big fan of Mother Nature. So I was particularly energized when Jane and Mark asked me to work on a project for them. The couple and their three children live in a lovely urban house by the lake, and all of them love the outdoors. Their open-concept home has a great casual vibe, with a sandy-beach feeling. Their walkout basement, however, was another story — it had become a dumping ground for old furniture and castoffs. Jane and Mark needed more space and wanted to turn the unused lower level into a multipurpose family room. They just didn’t know where to start. One of the most common questions I hear about design: “Where do I start?” The answer: “Start with what you love.” Since Jane and Mark love the beach, I decided to use a natural design approach to bring harmony and function to their basement, with a rustic, earthy feel. So I chose a gorgeous coastal palette of warm woods, deep

browns, rich blues and pebbled grays. I started by painting the walls a soft, warm gray. We tore up the old broadloom carpet and replaced it with a cork flooring with a wind-swept texture. This was a family room that had to function on three levels. Mark and Jane wanted a kitchen area to handle holiday overflow and summer barbecues. They also wanted a

mudroom space for the kids’ sports gear. And all of them wanted a lounge where they could watch TV. My challenge was to create three different zones in the one space and tie them together. Off to one side I created a U-shaped compact kitchen area and installed a long gray countertop with a beautiful deep sink, a built-in microwave, lots

eft untreated, asphalt pavement will deteriorate rapidly. The asphalt binder that holds the pavement together begins to oxidize and weather soon after installation. Moisture penetrates the asphalt causing further damage and deterioration to the pavement. One of the major ways moisture penetrates asphalt is through fatigue cracking. This condition occurs in areas subjected to repeated traffic loadings (wheel paths) and characteristically leaves the roadway in a chicken wire or alligator pattern. This cracking allows water into the pavement and causes the surface to break down, eventually forming a pothole. Potholes are bowl-shaped holes of various sizes in the pavement surface. Do not wait to fix potholes and other areas that are cracking. These areas of damaged asphalt can easily double within a one-year period. When problem areas arise, WalkerMoody Construction can patch and

Once moisture is prevented from penetrating the asphalt, this also is an ideal time to sealcoat the surface and prevent deraveling. The best fix for fatigue cracking and potholes is a hot asphalt patch. For areas with fatigue cracking, here is what you will need to do: One, cut enough asphalt so the hole is about 2 inches deep; two, clean the patch area so that all loose debris is removed; three, spray tack coat in the patch area and around the edges,

which acts like a glue and binds the hot asphalt to the current surface; and four, place hot asphalt in the hole and compact. A cheaper solution to removing and replacing is crackfilling. For crackfilling, you need to clean the loose debris and make sure the surface is dry. Apply a hot crack filler such as CrackMaster PL (flexible parking lot formula), and open the area for vehicular traffic within five minutes. Sinks and faucets “The experience of cooking in a kitchen where function and beauty are paramount can be as delightful as the gourmet meal itself,” Schrage says. “Think of this when beginning your kitchen redesign.” You may already have a sink or a faucet in mind and can use either piece as your starting

faucet pairings. Will the color of your sink complement the finish of the faucet? Some sink finishes, like stainless, or enameled cast iron, will allow more flexibility when choosing a faucet to go with it.

Cabinets and countertops Design harmony also is important when you’re matching countertops and cabinets. Not upscale houses with rare and ultra-pricy roofing materials, but average, middle-class homes,” explained Clinton Murakami, the founder’s oldest son, who now owns the business. Careful growth and a thorough knowledge of his targeted market have served Murakami well. To ensure consistent quality, he’s selective about the jobs he bids. “(When I look at a project) I ask myself, ‘Can we do a good job for this person? Can I walk away at the end of the day, confident that I’m going to serve them well?’” he said. “If I can’t, I’d just rather not do it.” In a shaky economy, turning away customers might seem counterintuitive, but Murakami says business is booming. Between roofing jobs and his small heavy equipment rental sideline, his team of a dozen men stays busy. Murakami is delighted by his latest purchase, a miniature JCB backhoeloader.

“Imagine if somebody took a shrinking ray and shrunk a backhoe down to the size of a Toyota sedan!” he said. “You can dig a trench with the backhoe, and there’s a big scooper bucket on the front end.
