Designing a Room

H

ave you ever walked into a room that just felt awkward? If so, you may have come upon a room that was suffering from the “bad-balance blues. I recently encountered just such a space when working with my clients, Jesse and Anne. The moment I walked into their living room, I knew the room was unbalanced. Everything seemed to “happen on one side of the room, making it feel heavy and off-kilter. The couple wanted the living room to be the social hub of the house, but didn’t know how to make it happen. I knew that by employing the principle of balance, I could transform their uncomfortable room into a truly elegant space. When designing a room, two forms of balance are key: symmetrical balance and asymmetrical balance. Symmetrical balance is achieved when similar items are placed on opposite sides of an invisible line (such as putting matching side tables on either side of a sofa). Asymmetrical balance is created when different ele-

ments like colors, shapes and sizes are used to create equilibrium (for example, placing a side table on one side of a sofa and a floor lamp on the other). If you only employ symmetrical balance, a room will seem stiff and formal. By adding asymmetrical balance, you create more interest and energy. With these principles in mind, I kicked off my redesign. To help the room get its groove back, I got rid of all of the existing furnishings, painted the walls a light gray and started from scratch. One of the walls contained a century-old wood-and-stone fireplace. To update it, I removed the mantel and had it painted white, clad the front in a carrera marble hexagon tile and replaced the dated hearth tile with black slate porcelain tile. For above the fireplace, I chose a recessed, wood-framed mirror that houses a hidden television. Then, to create symmetrical balSEE PAGE 10

Hawaii PV Modules with More Power and Durability

Bruce Ekimura Owner and Founder

A

lternate Energy Inc. has entered into a partnership with Mitsubishi Electric, becoming an official Certified Mitsubishi Installer and Premier Dealer. Alternate Energy is the only authorized dealer based in Hawaii to provide Mitsubishi’s photovoltaic modules, including the new MLU Series. With more than 35 years of experience in the photovoltaic industry, Mitsubishi Electric’s PV systems are designed and built for optimal efficiency and reliability. Mitsubishi Electric is proud to use 100 percent lead-free solder in their PV modules and continues to lead the industry in its development of highefficiency PV modules. In the new MLU Series panels, Mitsubishi has increased the number of cells per module from 50 to 60 and improved the cell efficiency, bringing the homeowner more power per square foot to

better utilize limited space and give a higher return on investment. The modules are designed for roof mount or ground mount installations and include a fourlayer junction box, leadfree solder, and a revolutionary back protection bar for extra support. In fact, while standard windload rating for PV panels is 50 pounds per square foot (ppsf), Mitsubishi panels are rated to withstand 112 ppsf and winds up to 130 miles per hour. Perhaps most important for Hawaii homes, Mitsubishi panels are engineered to withstand tough outdoor conditions including coastline corrosion. While all other manufacturer warranties specify a 500-meter minimum installation distance from salt water, Mitsubishi is the only manufacturer to extend warranty on modules installed near salt water, making the panels an ideal choice for Hawaii. Additionally, Mitsubishi

is one of the only Japanese manufacturers to produce 100 percent made-inJapan modules. That kind of quality makes an important difference especially for Hawaii customers, where wind is a constant factor and saltwater corrosion can be an issue even in leeward communities. Bruce Ekimura, owner

and founder of Alternate Energy, said, “In a market where new solar product manufacturers are materializing virtually overnight, Mitsubishi is a well-diversified, 150-yearold company with a long history of excellence. By bringing our modules in direct from Japan, we can ensure that our customers are getting the

best quality product available, and that the maker of their solar investment will be around to honor any warranty issues for generations to come.” Alternate Energy’s customers say it gives them peace of mind to know that they are working with a longtime, established local company and manufacturers when they make this important environmental investment for their home or business. Today, Alternate Energy is proud to be one of Hawaii’s oldest residential and commercial solar energy companies, locally owned and operated from day one. They have been a Hawaii Energy conservation & efficiency program approved independent solar water heating contractor since the program’s inception. And

like always, they will continue to focus on what they do best: design and installation of photovoltaic systems, solar water heating systems and solar attic fans. Alternate Energy is headquartered at 1111 Dillingham Blvd., #H3, Honolulu 96817 (with offices on Maui at 60 East Wakea Ave. #109, Kahului 96732). ighrise apartment remodeling presents challenges not every contractor is willing or able to tackle. Homeworks Construction, a design/build firm known best for its single family and ohana custom homes and remodels, is also a specialist in condominium remodeling, from kitchen and bath renovations to redesign and reconstruction of entire apartment interiors. Homeworks has completed several major remodeling jobs at

Honolulu condos under the direction of project manager Heather Hickox, who says she “enjoys the challenge.” “Major remodeling in an apartment environment is very complicated, more so than a singlefamily home remodel or even a new custom home,” Hickox said. “And the challenge is compounded if the owners decide to remain in the apartment during the job. Hundreds of details and decisions are involved,

delivering materials to the site, which usually entails utilizing several flights of interior stairs and/or scheduling use of an elevator. If the apartment is to be gutted, debris removal has to be coordinated with deliver-

eventually, this service took on a life of its own. Today, I operate Murakami Roofing and our inventory consists of small skid loaders and track loaders that range from 36 inches to 42 inches wide. The loaders are used mainly to move dirt, gravel and other types of material. We also have mini excavators that are used to dig footings, trenches, swimming pools, as well as remove small trees. We recently acquired a compact backhoe that combines a

skid loader and an excavator in one compact machine. We carry attachments for some of our machines, like trenchers for installing pipes, jackhammers for breaking up concrete and backhoes for our skid loaders to dig footings. The machines are manufactured by Bobcat, Komatsu, Toro and JCB. Our customers range from large contractors who need a compact machine for demolition work inside buildings to homeowners who have small landscaping projects. Over the past three years, the trend has been toward younger homeowners doing their own renovation projects such as digging footings for

concrete sidewalks, patios and swimming pools. Some of our customers, in fact, are women and they have no problem operating the machines. The versatility of these machines is quite amazing. For their size, they are quite powerful. Our skid loaders are capable of moving a large pile of gravel in a matter of hours. The mini excavator can dig footings of a patio in one afternoon. The labor savings alone can pay for the rental of the machines. Call us at 348-8270 to find the right machine for your project and for rental prices and delivery charges.

Opposite the fireplace, I created an accent wall that kicks up the composition with color and shape. I painted the wall black to pick up on the color of the slate. I then positioned two gorgeous crystal sconces that flank an asymmetrical grouping of framed photos. In front of this wall I set an ash-colored sectional sofa and a little raw oak side table, finishing the ensemble with a lovely white lac-

Here, to offset the solid-colored fabric on the furnishings, I hung patterned drapes in a muted gold and brought in a large area rug that picks up on the colors of the drapes. Lastly, to help further balance the space, I created a small sitting area along the half-wall opposite the windows by using one of the lounge chairs, a little table and a beautiful little crystal chandelier hanging above it. An Education in

Wood and Stone PACIFIC IMPORTS

O

ne of the things that Shirley Pai Hilton of Pacific Imports International notices most about customers who are

interested in putting in some new wood or stone flooring is how great their need for information is. “We can literally spend

hours with a particular customer, educating them on the different types of wood and stone flooring, each product’s features, functions and benefits, and also give them tips on what might best suit their decorating taste. It’s an essential part of helping the customer make a decision and we constantly learn new things in the process, as well.” And that is the very reason that Pacific Imports has been offering free seminars at their beautiful showroom nearly every month (by popular demand). The next session is scheduled for Saturday, July 23, from

10 to 11:30 a.m. “Everyone tells us how glad they are that they attended and how much they enjoyed the seminar,” says Hilton. Listen to basics on wood, laminate and stone flooring while enjoying coffee and donuts. The program is very interesting and informative, and you will have the opportunity to ask all the questions you would like, either in the session or one-to-one afterwards. There also will be a great deal of installation information and sound advice on what might be appropriate for your house or condominium. Best of all,

attending is the only way you can get the private sale pricing, which is the very best deal you will ever get from Pacific Imports. This is a promise that Hilton is serious about and vows that any other advertised sales or trade shows specials will not match this pricing. Hilton is the presenter at the seminar and is a sought-after expert on wood flooring in Hawaii. Often a consultant for project developers, builders and local publications, she has very extensive knowledge on wood products, the manufacturing process, the pros and cons of various

products and the finer points of installation. Pacific Imports features Hawaii’s largest wood flooring showroom with 3,000 square feet of display space. Products include their very own, and very popular, Kahala Floors line of beautiful engineered wood flooring made especially for Hawaii, arguably one of the best engineered floors in the world. They also feature Bayside Solids and laminate flooring, and have recently added extensive choices in tile, stone and carpet. Please call 8477711 for more information or to reserve a seat for the seminar.

the showroom and work out a three-dimensional design for the cabinet and counter layout on the computer if an overall floor plan for the room is provided. If the customer approves the quoted price, the sales associate will meet with the home owner at the jobsite and work out a detailed plan there. Customers planning a building or remodeling project are advised to buy now and start early if they want it completed by the end of summer. The cabinets, countertops, and flooring are the major builtin components of any kitchen or bath and should complement each other in terms of style and color schemes. These components need to be considered and integrated into the design plan along with appliance selection, which will affect dimensions and installation. A wide variety of choices in hardwood cabinets and granite countertops is on display at the C&C Cabinets Granite showroom, as well as stainless steel sinks. The cabinets are precision designed and include high-quality handles, pulls and runners. No particle board or other synthetic materials are used in the fabrication of the cabinet doors, shelves and drawers. Because these are high-quality products, the assumption is that the prices will also be high...but at C&C Cabinets Granite this is

not the case. Their pricing is competitive even for customized cabinets and countertops. C&C Cabinets Granite handles delivery and installation of the items purchased. They can also quote on remodeling, including carpentry, painting, windows, and doors, if the customer

does not already have a builder. The C&C Cabinets Granite showroom (located at 500 Alakawa St., behind Costco Gas in Iwilei), is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and closed on Sunday. For information, call 808853-2088.

Apartment Remodeling

Not Easy

tinuously during those hours since the owners resided elsewhere until it was completed. Owners are welcome to stay if they have no alternative, but then the work usually needs to be done in phases to provide access to kitchen and bath facilities and we’ll have to schedule a cleanup every evening...meaning more time and cost.” The owners of the Commodore apartment rented a single family home in Kaneohe temporarily until they were able to find a condo they liked well enough to buy. The one bedroom, two bath apartment in the Commodore suited their needs and they preferred it to most of the newer

condos they looked at. However, it had been redesigned by the previous owner as an ADA compliant apartment, meaning that much of the interior would have to be gutted. Hickox was confident that her team would be able to transform it into a “like new” condominium home for the new owners. Hickox noted that the kitchen and baths were stripped down to the studs and plumbing and wiring replaced and/or moved throughout. All new appliances were installed in both kitchen and baths, a dining counter was added in the kitchen which was “pushed out” toward the living room to provide four more feet of space, cabinets and walls were

refinished, existing flooring was removed, ceramic tile was selected for kitchen, baths, and hallway flooring, and new wall-to-wall carpeting was laid in the living room and bedrooms. Hickox, a specialist in wall treatments and painting, worked with the owner to choose the designer lighting fixtures and select colors for walls and other surfaces. “We have our own showroom with an extensive selection of cabinet, trim, counter and flooring samples that we can take to the job site and confer with the home owner to make sure the colors are what they envision. Lighting, both natural and artificial, can change the appearance of colored surfaces. For example, we chose a beige grout for the bathroom floor tile, but the artificial lighting in the bathroom made it look pink...so we made a new selection. Tiles can look entirely different when placed against or next to a contrasting color. This

is the fun part of the job...when you get to these details.” With careful reconfiguration of the floor plan, the approximately 1,000square-foot, 30-year-old apartment was transformed into a modern condominium home with unique styling and designer finishes. Arches were added over the dining counter and doorways, which Hickox noted requires experienced drywallers, framers and carpenters. “Our people are real perfectionists who take pride in the final product. We all work as a team — the Homeworks architectural design department, the engineers, our kitchen and bath specialist, the project coordinators who oversee the budgeting and selections — it’s a well-oiled machine in which everyone plays an integral role in creating a successful final product for the client. We celebrated completion of the project just 52 days from the start-up date ... on schedule and on budget,” Hickox said.
