Quality, affordable, licensed

Handyman Services now offered by HPS

here is a legal limit of $1,000 for handyman work, above which a contractor’s license is required to protect consumers. But there have been so many unlicensed and scammer rip-offs and horror stories that more and more homeowners want the legal protection of a licensed contractor for any size job, even for those

T

that cost a mere $100. There is a growing problem of homeowners getting poor work and being stuck with paying out, but not receiving fair value. Even worse, some contractors don’t answer their clients’ calls, or they simply disappear. Calling all unlicensed purveyors of construction and home improvement

services “unlicensed contractors” is really stretching the truth, since most who call themselves that and claim a vast body of experience and excellence at bargain prices don’t deserve to be called contractors at all. HPS Construction Services is offering a solution that doesn’t cost homeowners any more money, but offers the comfort of a licensed handyman service.

HPS president and general manager Gerry Peters says the company will also tackle jobs under $1,000, sometimes as low as only $100, for all of Oahu, and now most of Maui, too. In effect, clients get licensedquality work and assurances, yet don’t pay any more than for the guy off the street with a ladder sticking out of his trunk, so to speak. Peters says he has seen too many instances in his 30-plus years in Hawaii in

which amateurs or untrained handymen, or even contractor workers, would undertake plumbing or electrical work which would result in floods and fires. Peters says that Hawaii clients trying to save a buck can end up penny-wise but very pound-foolish when their insurance company refuses to pay for the 10 floors of flooded condos below, or a fire. Peters says HPS offers expert termite and water

damage repairs inside and out; also drywall, and concrete cracks/spalling repairs, and basically A to Z services. Likewise, HPS has become a leader in providing kitchen and bath remodels and upgrades with an average of 25 percent to 50 percent savings for single-family homes and condos and townhouses. HPS and Peters can be reached at 847-4400. Or, visit the websites hpscon structionservices.com and hurricaneprotect.com.

Facelift

from Essential Cabinet Refacing Inc.

itchen remodeling can be a daunting task, but cabinet refacing makes it easier on many levels. Refacing can actually save you money because it keeps the existing cabinet boxes in place. With refacing, only the exterior of the cabinets — doors, drawers and hardware — are replaced. This means you can change the entire look of the cabinets by choosing a new color and style.

K

Refacing also is an easy way to update your kitchen at less than 50 percent of the cost of buying brand new. By not ripping the cabinets out of the kitchen, you save on labor and materials. Many have that one problem area: the pantry that seems to have 10year-old expired cans in the back; the corner cabinet that you haven’t explored in years; the lost corner cabinet that you know has storage space

somewhere back there, but you just can’t get to it. Essential Cabinet Refacing Inc. can help you find solutions to these problems by doing simple carpentry modifications or adding some cabinet inserts or special hardware. Best yet, the job need not cost you thousands of extra dollars to do it. If a new kitchen is what you desire, contact Essential Cabinet Refacing Inc. immediately. The company builds new custom

cabinets in its shop. Everything is made to order by a team of skilled staff members. They have been in business 21 years and pride themselves on high-quality work offered at reasonable, competitive prices. Owners Ringo and Michele Pauly have their offices and shop in the Sand Island area at 212

Mohonua Place. Showroom hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For information or to

he Murakami family has been meeting the roofing needs of Hawaii for two generations. Clifford Murakami started out in the roofing business in 1976. The oldest son Clinton Murakami has for the past five years has been owner and operator of Murakami’s Roofing Service. Covering all types of roofing and waterproofing, Murakami’s is primarily a residential roofing contractor that specializes in single-family homes. They install all types of roofing material that you would find on residential roofs. Asphalt

T

shingles that range from the standard 30-year shingle to the more durable 50 year are very cost effective and are mildew and algae resistance. They also offer metal roofing in various configurations like standing seam panels or aluminum shakes or shingles. For low slope roofs the standard torch on roll roofing has been an industry standard for years and they offer it in 12-, 15- and 20-year warranties. Also within the past few years they have been offering cooling solutions for your roof. They can apply reflec-

tive elastomeric roof coatings that greatly reduce roof surface temperatures. Attic fans and ridge vents are installed as a way to reduce heat build up in your attic space and increase the life span of your roofing material. Murakami’s also will repair termite and dry rot damage to your roof’s structure. They will do roof repairs that range from replacing wind-damaged shingles and minor leak repairs to partial reroofs. As our economic climate gets worse Murakami’s Roofing stresses that consumers do their homework before choos-

ing a roofing contractor and a roof system. First, make sure your contractor is properly insured and has a good rating with the Better Business Bureau. Having good credentials will give consumers a better level of comfort to know that their contractor is competent.

Second, make sure you know your options. In grades of materials and types of installations. For example, when installing asphalt shingles there are different grades (30yr-50yr) and you can choose to remove existing roofing or go over the existing roofing.

Third, will your project be supervised and will you be kept informed on the progress if any unforeseen problems come up? It’s a good idea to prepare as best as possible when making a purchase that can have a positive effect on the value of your home.
