Diving into a world of
Tomatoes
N
ow that the new year is officially under way, how many of you are sticking to those New Year’s resolutions? It’s easier said than done, so I commend all of you who are exhibiting pure dedication to that annual list. Mind you, I have made a list of my own I’m trying to abide by, but let’s see how long that lasts, shall we? For starters, I want to enjoy working out. Honestly, I dread dragging myself on that treadmill, or running a mile or two around my neighborhood — it’s pure torture, so I never do it. Visits to the gym are a no-go, and with a job like mine, where all I do is

eat, unfortunately exercise is a must! To go along with my goal of starting up an exercise regimen, I’m also on a quest to eat healthy. With that said, this week I figure why not start off the year by focusing on a food I love, and on top of that, has a multitude of health benefits? Enter into the world of tomatoes, which have been known to reduce the risk of heart disease, lower hypertension, and contain numerous antioxidants which combat various types of cancer. “Tomayto, tomahto,” whatever you wish to call it, is considered to be both a vegetable and a fruit, and is an integral mainstay in global cuisine. So, wait no longer, come along with me, as we experience the allure of tomatoes at the following Ono, You Know establishments! Perhaps you may even want to join 3660 on the Rise executive chef Russell Siu, Jan. 18, as he conducts a Tomato Harvest Italian Style cooking class (call 737.1177).
yearning for a cup of joe, Kissaten has exactly what you need. Open 24 hours, seven days a week, this coffee bar on Piikoi Street never disappoints. With morning, afternoon, evening and late-night menus, and a full coffee bar, with teas and hot chocolate to boot, Kissaten is heaven sent. And while I’m not much of a coffee addict — give me one shot of espresso and I may never know sleep again — I will admit that I am whole-heartedly addicted to Kissaten’s Tomato Bisque Soup. Noted as a top seller, a bowl of this hearty soup is a must-have at any time of the day or night. Curl up on the couch or take a seat at the coffee bar, this tomato bisque soup is the perfect date. Priced at $5, the soup is full of zest with every sip. “Customers love our tomato bisque soup,” says co-owner Neysa Taba. “I would say we sell close to 50 bowls of this soup per day, and it’s always very popular.” All this may be because this hot bowl of goodness features just the right amount of tomato, cream and spices, while a drizzle of basil oil and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese give it a finishing touch. “We always use fresh, local tomatoes when we can — and it makes a big difference in the quality and taste of the soup,” Taba adds. my weakness, and I’m happy to know that it’s available whenever a craving strikes. Yet, since I have a relatively large appetite, my order of choice would have to be the Grilled Cheese Sandwich and Tomato Bisque Combo ($9), and may I add, Kissaten’s Grilled Cheese Sandwich is winners! – See page 12

Zippy’s Restaurants has been an iconic landmark in Hawaii since 1966, when founders Charlie and Francis Higa opened the doors to the first eatery, setting its roots in McCully. Since then Zippy’s has become a part of Hawaii’s ohana with 24 locations on Oahu and one in Kahului, Maui. Dining Out recently caught up with Zippy’s Restaurants marketing manager Jeanine Mamiya-Kalahiki, who gladly gave us the inside scoop on some of Zippy’s classic rotating daily specials and new limited-time offers that will hopefully have you on your way to Sin City! DO: It’s that time of year again for Zippy’s Get Lucky 21 Prize Giveaway promotion, which means there are lots of exciting things in
store when it comes to food and prizes. What can customers look forward to when wanting to satisfy their appetites? Mamiya-Kalahiki: Well, we’re featuring two exciting entrees that have become Zippy’s favorites — Spaghetti & Chicken Mixed Plate and Zippy’s Oxtail Style Turkey Neck Soup. Our Spaghetti & Chicken Mixed Plate ($5.99 fastfood counter/$6.99 restaurant) features spaghetti noodles topped with your choice of meat sauce or Zippy’s chili with a side of our famous fried chicken, garlic bread and macaroni salad. This classic meal is available now through Feb. 5. Zippy’s Oxtail Style Turkey Neck Soup ($5.29 fast-food counter/$6.29 restaurant) also is available now through Feb. 5 from
10:30 a.m., daily (while supplies last). If you love Zippy’s popular Oxtail Soup, then you must try this. Introduced in 2009, Oxtail Style Turkey Neck Soup was a great hit with customers, and we’re excited to bring it back again for a limited time. Cuts of turkey neck are simmered in a tasty broth similar to Zippy’s Oxtail Soup, topped with choi sum and Chinese parsley, and served with your choice of white or brown rice (ginger is served upon request).
DO: Those are some delicious deals, but what’s equally enticing is Zippy's prize giveaway! Can you divulge a bit about that? Mamiya-Kalahiki: Sure! Coinciding with our value offers,
Zippy’s will have a Lucky 21 prize giveaway. With any purchase now through Feb. 5, you receive an entry blank (one entry per person per visit) for your chance to win one of 21 grand prize trips for two from Honolulu to Las Vegas with accommodations at the California Hotel, courtesy of VacationsHawaii. What’s more, these trips also will have premium class service, which now serves Zippy’s famous chili.
DO: That's great! You have nothing to lose, so you might as well enter! In addition to Zippy’s Lucky 21 Prize Giveaway, Zippy’s will be offering a variety of rotating daily specials, starting tomorrow, correct? Mamiya-Kalahiki: Yes, starting tomorrow, Zippy’s will be revising its current selection of daily specials, served from 10:30 a.m. daily. And due to customer demand, some specials have been reintroduced to the menu, as well as adding on some new items. DO: What items have been reintroduced? Mamiya-Kalahiki: Our reintroduced items are Turkey a la King ($6.95 fast-food counter/$7.95 restaurant), Beef Stroganoff ($7.95 fast-food counter/$9.15
restaurant), Mochiko Chicken ($8.35 fast-food counter/$9.60 restaurant) and Chicken Katsu Curry ($8.15 fast-food counter/$9.35 restaurant). DO: What are the new items to hit the daily specials menu? Mamiya-Kalahiki: We have a handful of new items, including Pork and Peas aka Pork Guisantes ($7.85 fast-food counter/$8.95 restaurant) and Boneless Braised Beef Chuck Shortribs ($13.50 restaurant only). Then we have the Kalbi Bowl ($11.50 restaurant only) that presents diners with grilled slices of marinated beef drizzled with miso mayo, atop a bed of rice, and paired with kim chee, cucumbers and choi sum. Lastly, we’re offering Kim Chee Fried Rice ($9.75 restaurant only) served with bacon, kim chee, green onions, round onions, celery, ham, a hint of sesame oil and beef base, topped with an egg of your choice and sprinkled with sesame seeds. The dish is accompanied by teriyaki beef and fried won tons. Note that prices are slightly higher at Zippy’s Pearlridge, Ala Moana and Kahului locations. DO: Also highlighted this month are two mouth-watering salads — Zippy’s Mandarin Orange
Salad and Korean Chicken Salad. Please tell us about these, they’re perfect for those who wish to eat healthy this new year. Mamiya-Kalahiki: Yes, available for a limited time, Zippy’s Manadarin Orange Salad ($6.50 restaurant only) consists of Nalo Zip greens, Mandarin orange wedges, toasted sliced almonds, Craisins (dried cranberries), doused in our fruit vinaigrette dressing. Then, of course, Zippy’s Korean Chicken Salad ($9.25 restaurant only) is a customer favorite with Nalo Zip greens topped with Korean fried chicken, tomato wedges and cucumbers, seasoned with Zippy’s house dressing. Keep in mind prices are a bit higher at Zippy’s Kahului. DO: 2012 looks as if its off to a great start at Zippy’s. What are the restaurant’s hopes for the new year? Mamiya-Kalahiki: We’re planning to unveil new promotions. With 24 Zippy's locations islandwide, there’s practically an establishment in every community, so we make it a point to cater our tastes to each neighborhood. People look forward to our specials here, and we want to keep it like that — so there’s always something to look forward to!

akiniku Million has added a delicious Kal Bi Seaweed Soup ($13.95) to its menu, and Mung Bean Pancake ($5) to its list of appetizers. This non-spicy soup, also known as the birthday soup, is a traditional birthday dish in Korea. I know this from my daily dose of Korean soap operas. “It’s good for you too,” says manager Diana Paik. “It’s Korean custom for moms to eat it after giving birth. They eat it three times a day for one month because it’s good for blood circulation and milk production. It’s also popular with men, when you’re sick and after drinking alcohol.” In addition to its late-night hours (it’s open until 2 a.m. on weekends) and yakiniku or grill-ityourself-at-your-table style of dining, Yakiniku Million also is known for its large menu of ready-to-eat traditional Korean favorites, such as Kal Bi Kim Chee Chi-Ke ($13.95) and Bul Go Gi Dol Sot Bi Bim Bab ($14.95). Kal Bi Kim Chee Chi-Ke features kal bi, tofu, kim chee and green onion, with a medium spicy soup base. “Not a lot of Korean restaurants make this,” notes Paik. “And you can order it extra spicy.” The Bul Go Gi Dol Sot Bi Bim Bab has carrots, zucchini, bean sprouts, mushrooms, soybean sprouts and cabbage. It’s mixed with rice in a hot stone pot, which keeps the food hot longer and the rice slightly crispy. Every meal includes seven sides: daikon
kim chee, raw crab, potato salad, dried cuttlefish (taegu), won bok cabbage kim chee, seaweed stem and mackerel with steamed daikon. Yakiniku Million, which is locally owned and operated by the Park family (four
sisters and a brother), opened its doors 25 years ago. The restaurant is located at 626 Sheridan St. off of Kapiolani Boulevard near Ala Moana Center, and parking is available behind the building. “These are all our family recipes,” adds Paik. “It’s food we enjoyed eating growing up.”

n December, Romano’s Macaroni Grill, the popular family eatery in Ala Moana Center, introduced 20 new items to its menu, including seven pupus. Found under the Italian Tapas section of the menu, the items range in price from $6 to $9, but diners can order two for $12. These bonus pairings are smart not just because they add value to your meal, but they can create a balance of flavors when chosen correctly. They also can add a little adult flavor to the keiki favorites your youngster will insist upon. The Mac & Cheese Bites with Truffle Dip ($6) is family comfort food without the needless utensils that just slow you down. The exterior is crispy, the interior rich with cheese and firm pasta. Chef Mike Longworth says the appetizer has been extremely popular, especially with the children. “What’s not to like,” said Longworth with a smile. “It’s mac and cheese with a cheese dipping sauce that we add a little truffle oil to for the adults.” A nice pairing for the
cheesy yet surprisingly non-messy finger food is the Shrimp, Cannellini Bean & Avocado Crostini ($9). The cleanness of the shrimp, beans and avocado and the crunchiness of the crostini provide a nice flavor and texture complement to the Mac & Cheese Bites. Plus, it looks far too healthy to interest the keiki, meaning more for you. The Spicy Ricotta Meatballs ($6.50) go well with the Goat Cheese Peppadew Peppers ($7). The meatballs are mild with a slight citrus flavor that comes from fresh orange and lemon zest. Ricotta cheese and panko bread crumbs help add to the texture without making the dish heavy. Whereas the meatballs are mild, the stuffed peppers are anything but. Bold with spice and pickling flavor, the peppers explode with juice and aroma without being overpowering. As Longworth says, it is a flavor you won’t get anyplace else.

Reach for a blue plate ($4.80), and one will enjoy choices of jumbo shrimp, mussels and more.

Curry King
here’s been a chill in the air lately, so besides putting an extra blanket on the bed, you may be hungry for something warm and comforting, like maybe hot soup or stew … or a steaming bowl of curry and rice. There are so many varieties of the savory dish and it’s readily available across the island, but if you’re craving curry, then it makes sense to head to a place with the word right in its name. At Curry King (OK, not only is the
T
word in its name, but it’s wearing a crown!), a Japanese eatery in Ward Warehouse, curry rules, although the one we’re after isn’t on the menu. But that doesn’t discourage us. Savvy vegetarians know to ask politely for what they want, and most of the time the restaurant is happy to oblige. So that’s just what we did. Tofu Curry ($7.55), is a bowl full of flavor with tofu, onions, carrots, cabbage and your choice of starch, accom-
panied by a small green salad. The curry sauce is “standard,” says owner Shane Yang, who reserves the right to not reveal all of its ingredients. But, he assures us, there is no meat or fish in the sauce. If curry doesn’t hit the spot, Yang also recommends Vegetable Tempura ($7.55), made with seasonal vegetables that may include zucchini, eggplant, carrots, onions, broccoli — whatever is available. It’s served with rice or noodles, and comes with a small green salad on the plate. “I plan on putting that on the menu,” says Yang. “We may come up with some more vegetable dishes in the future.” So when you’re looking for comfort

Since spicy tuna dishes are always popular, co-owner Lisa Yuan and her staff creatively designed the Spicy Tuna Cake ($2.89), featuring a blend of ahi, Shaka and Sriracha sauces, nori and green onion on top of rice. Other floating favorites include Uni (Sea Urchin Roe; $5.99), Hamachi ($3.99) and Spicy Tuna Don ($3.59). Freshness is a priority to Yuan, however, who makes everything madeto-order for those menu items that won’t survive the ride. The restaurant’s long, curved dining bar that bends around the flowing food creates an intimate space. If that doesn’t float your boat, to-go platters also are offered in sushi varieties as well as irresistibly sweet options such as Peanut Butter Mochi ($23.90, 22 piece). It’s worth it to make the trip, though. You can BYOB (bring your own bottle) and settle in amongst the bustling crowd of sushi-goers for a meal you won’t forget.

I love my pasta — spaghetti, linguine or fettucine smothered in a succulent marinara sauce makes me one happy gal! Always on the search for great pasta, you can imagine my delight when I stumbled upon Anytime Cafe’s Caprese Spaghettini some time ago. With one bite of this incredible pasta me and my taste buds were whisked right back to Italy, where I have enjoyed some of the best pasta in my life. So, the fact that I put

Anytime Cafe’s Caprese Spaghettini right up there with pastas devoured in Rome and Positano is saying a lot, but it’s the truth. “Our spaghetti and risotto are imported from Italy, so everything is served in the traditional Italian style,” owner Cindy Wong explains, reaffirming my belief. The Caprese Spaghettini ($9.50) features sauteed fresh tomato and basil tossed with fresh mozzarella cheese in homemade tomato sauce. Pure excellence! Now, the key to superb pasta lies in the texture of the noodles and the flavor of the sauce. I prefer my pasta al dente and with just the right amount of sauce — not too overwhelming, but enough to stand out on its own. And guess what? The chefs here at Anytime Cafe have got this exact cooking technique down to a science. No exaggeration intended, but I can guarantee that I will never tire of Anytime Cafe or its tomato lover’s perfect pasta dish. Opened in 1992, Sushi King is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. ushi King owner and manager Shu-Lee Kondo founded the restaurant in 1992 after operating another Japanese restaurant in San Francisco. But while Kondo has run three restaurants — the third was at the Stardust in Las Vegas before the hotel shut down — her longtime success in the industry started out as something of a fluke. Kondo is originally from Japan, but relocated to California as a young adult. For her husband, a chef, owning his own restaurant had been a lifelong dream. But just six months after he realized his dream by opening his restaurant in San Francisco, he went blind. At the time, Kondo was working in banking and knew very little about the restaurant business. But when her husband asked her to take over his restaurant, she agreed. “I said, 'why not?' Let me try,'” Kondo explains. “How could I say no? It was his dream.” When she moved to Hawaii years later, her initial intent was to retire here. But seeing an opportunity to open Sushi King, she decided to start another restaurant instead. Twenty years later, Sushi King is still going strong. In keeping with its family-run origins, Sushi King has attracted a loyal customer base throughout the years, and Kondo says that she thinks of her staff as an extended family. “My husband always taught me that the employees in your restaurant are family because you spend so much time there,” Kondo says. The Sushi King kitchen also is home to the Joe Aloha food truck, which is known for its smoked meat. Joe Aloha, which is run by Kondo’s son-in-law, prepares its food at Sushi King. The truck is located in front of Smart Stop Storage on the corner of Kamakee and Kawaihao streets. It is open Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Pho My Lien, located in Westridge Shopping Center, is ringing in 2012 with a brand-new takeout menu highlighting the eatery’s most popular dinein dishes. These dishes are favorites among Pho My Lien customers, according to Walter James, a close friend and business partner with the restaurant’s owners, Tommy Dang and his wife, Lien Bui. “We started offering our brand-new takeout menu on Jan. 1,” says James. “If somebody wants anything on the main menu for a takeout order, they can have it, but the (restaurant’s) most popular dishes are on the takeout menu.” Pho My Lien’s new takeout menu features dishes such as Crispy
Spring Rolls ($7.50 for four) — thin flour sheets rolled with pork, chicken, shrimps, shredded carrot, long rice and mushrooms, deep fried and served with mint leaves, lettuce, rice noodles and sauce — and Crispy Calamari ($7.95). The menu also boasts an assortment of salads, including the frequently requested Chicken Salad ($7.50) — shredded skinless and boneless chicken mixed with shredded lettuce, mint leaves, onion and house special dressing — and Green Papaya Salad ($7.50). The latter, composed of shredded green papaya, shrimp, mint leaves, peanuts and served with a house special salad dressing, will be the eatery’s special for the month of February. “Each month, we offer a monthly special for $4.99 or less,” he says. “This month’s special is the Won Ton Soup (a shrimp
and pork dumpling soup). February’s monthly special will feature the Green Papaya Salad.” For customers looking for healthy dishes, James recommends the eatery’s signature dish, pho ($7.95), with the customer’s choice of meats, including slices of rare steak, beef soft tendon, beef well-done brisket, beef tripe and beef balls. Pho with Chicken Meat ($7.95), Pho with Mixed Vegetables ($7.95) and Pho with Shrimps and Squid ($8.95) also are available. While pho is the restaurant’s signature item, Pho My Lien offers customers a variety of healthy entrées from which they can choose. James also recommends Broccoli Sauteed ($7.95) with one choice of chicken, pork, beef, shrimp or tofu. The restaurant’s Summer Rolls ($4.95 for two) are another good choice for healthy dining, as they feature rice vermicelli, mint leaves and bean sprouts wrapped in rice sheets with the meat of one’s choice. “The appetizers are all popular, but if you look at the summer rolls, there are different varieties,” James explains. “You can have
(summer rolls with) boiled shrimp, shredded pork, barbecue beef, barbecue pork, barbecue chicken or tofu … if you want to eat healthy, you can simply have tofu summer rolls.” While Pho My Lien is promoting its new takeout menu, it has not changed its dine-in menu. James states that the eatery has remained consistent in its menu items and reasonable prices ever since it first opened in November 2010. “We’ve not raised our prices on the menu; we’re still going to give you good value for your money,” he says. “For the quality and quantity (of food) that you get, it’s priced very, very reasonably.” Although the eatery is not anticipating any major changes in terms of its menus, James states that Pho My Lien is currently searching for a second location. “Basically, we haven’t changed from last year; we’re keeping the same philosophy of delicious food at reasonable prices,” he says. “We’re still going to cater to families — we offer food with familystyle prices.”
