or some, the mere mention of a job fair evokes feelings of stress and confusion. If not well organized, these expositions can be as difficult for employers to find qualified people as it is for the jobless to make favorable impressions with potential bosses. To avoid such pitfalls and ensure the job search experience is a positive and productive one, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser is welcoming all earnest job seekers to attend its inaugural Career Expo 2014, scheduled for Wednesday, April 2 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Neal Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall. Participants can look forward to a number of unique services and expo events aimed at refining the entire career search experience. At the start of the expo, Express Employment Professionals will be sta-
tioned near the Blaisdell box office with free admission vouchers for attendees in business attire. “We realize how important a first impression can be when interviewing for a job, so it makes sense to reward those who are dressed for success,” said Patrick Klein, director of classified advertising at the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Once inside, attendees will have the opportunity to meet with executives from more than 80 different companies. Committed exhibitors include many auto dealers, staffing agencies, universities, hotels and transportation companies, offices of the City and County of Honolulu and more. “There will be representation from a variety of different trades and job types,” said Klein. “We think people will be surprised to learn just how many different companies are
looking to hire at the moment.” Additionally, event organizers have reserved a corner office suite for qualified job applicants to peruse listings that include supervisory and management positions. “Near the entrance area, we will have a team doing further resume screening and those with applicable work experience or other qualifications will be allowed direct access to the corner office suite,” said Leianne Pedro, an account executive at the Honolulu StarAdvertiser. With more than 1,300 applicants already pre-registered for the event, Career Expo 2014 is poised to be this year’s most talked about and successful recruiting event. “Up until now, most people attending job fairs have typically gone for entry-level positions,” said Pedro. “Now with our economy in better shape
than years past, more people are looking to find a career rather than just a job.” Such job seekers will enjoy taking advantage of the numerous human resource professionals from the Society of Human Resource Management Hawaii Chapter, in attendance to conduct mock interviews. “It will be a truly remarkable service for attendees to participate in a one-on-one interview with these representatives,” Pedro said. “The applicant will be able to hear useful feedback including commentary regarding his or her interviewing skills.” Unlike its job fair predecessors, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s first expo is sure to resonate with both job seekers and hiring executives. “By following our particular protocol, we are essentially trying to boil down Hawaii’s employment pool to those who
are serious, qualified and willing to commit,” said Pedro. “If all goes well, participants could walk away with a job already secured, which is very exciting.” Hire away! “You’re fired!” may have been the catchphrase of years past, but “You’re hired!” will be the exclamation heard around Neal Blaisdell Center during Career Expo 2014. Job seekers looking to gain a unique upper hand at this year’s career expo are invited to attend a special “You’re Hired” event, where chosen candidates will be selected to participate in a series of mock interviews, each of which could end with a real job offer. Big seminar for exhibitors In partnership with the Society of Human Resource Management Hawaii Chapter, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Career Expo 2014 will host a special education seminar for all participating exhibitors. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 1 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Neal Blaisdell Center’s Pikake Room. Aside from explaining how to avoid employment law litigation, the seminar will feature tips and techniques from top attorneys in the area. hen interviewing for a job, most employers won’t take very long to make up their minds about whom they will hire. Many, in fact, will form a decision within moments of meeting job candidates. The late American psychologist Dr. Joyce Brothers used to refer to this as “the 30-second rule.” Indeed, seconds count when attempting to impress a prospective employer. And because no one gets a second chance at making a first impression, it becomes critical for job seekers to always look and dress their best from the get-go. Here in the 808, the dress code is slightly different than what our Mainland counterparts might wear to a job interview. For example, the three-piece suit is usually not required — unless, of course, you are applying for work at a financial institution, law firm, or other corporate entity. But whatever it is you choose to wear, make sure your choices are suitable to the position you are applying for.
“Your clothes should be neat, clean and not rumpled,” said Melissa Pavlicek, executive director of the Society for Human Resource Management, Hawaii Chapter — an organization with more than 800 human resource professionals and a participant in the upcoming Career Expo 2014, scheduled for April 2 at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. “For most office jobs in Hawaii, that means crisp dress pants and collared shirts for men or women. They reflect on your professional ability.” Ultimately, Pavlicek counseled job seekers not to allow a lack of attention to attire be the determining factor in why they lost a position to another candidate. “Applicants should give themselves every opportunity to shine,” she said. “Dressing appropriately gets you in the door. Your experience, talent and personality do the rest, but the interviewer won’t ‘see’ the rest of you if your attire is inappropriate.”

first impression goes a long way in forging an image or opinion of a person. It’s something one rarely forgets, and requires incredible effort to change. When it comes to employment, prospective job seekers can usually make or break their chances at landing work based on their first impression presented via a job interview. In addition to glossing over key elements on one’s resume or recounting past events within a job history, a job interview allows a prospective employee to essentially sell themselves to an employer — who, in many cases, is inundated with wellqualified applicants all vying for one or limited openings. Making a positive first impression is vital in the job seeking process as the brief window into one’s character and makeup usually overshadows — positively or negatively — any additional details, anecdotes or supporting evidence provided by a prospective employee. The following are 10 vital pre-interview tips that should help tip the scales in a job seeker’s favor: 1. Identify whether or not the company is a good fit. The goal of securing employment should be about coinciding with one’s skills and needs, not simply finding the highestpaying job. Prospective employees are encouraged to do the proper research, including learning about the company’s owners, community services and other important aspects related to the work environment. 2. Craft a modern resume that’s fit for the digital age. Today’s hiring world has changed from what it was 10 years ago in that online content is a crucial resource for businesses looking to grow their staff. For job seekers, that means successful resumes are social and interactive for their audiences. Depending on the industry you’re applying for, your resume can be taken to
the next level through videos, blogs and online portfolios. You may even want to create hyperlinks to better direct potential employers to writing samples and personal websites. When creating an online resume, remember to: one, avoid over-the-top fonts and colors; two, read over the job description to customize your resume accordingly; and three, save your resume as a PDF to avoid formatting issues when employers open it up. 3. Do a drive by. Before diving into a job interview, get directions to the location, take a look at where the building is situated, identify landmarks and become familiar with the parking situation. This important research step should be tackled a few days prior to the interview to avoid unnecessary stress during the already hectic moments prior to meeting the interviewer. 4. Dress appropriately. “It seems like an obvious tip, but it’s amazing how many people dress inappropriately,” said Melissa Pavlicek, executive director of the Society for Human Resource Management Hawaii Chapter. (See related story on page 14.) Dressing the part also relates to proper research done on the company, and helps interviewees demonstrate the correct level of professionalism. 5. Arrive on time, but not too early. An interviewee should arrive a few minutes early, but not more than 15 minutes prior to the scheduled interview time. Arriving too early could lead to anxiety or added stress for the potential employee while rushing the interviewer — something that could lead to a negative impression of the candidate before the interview gets under way. 6. Be prepared for openended or situational questions. These are questions used by employers to pinpoint specific, more revealing information
about a prospective employee. Some examples of these inquiries include asking applicants to describe a situation that involved dealing with conflict and finding a solution to the issue, or describing a “bad decision” made in a past work instance. 7. Practice answering questions related to volunteer work, community service or mentoring. “Those are some questions that interviewees typically may not think about. They’re only focused on what’s exactly mentioned on their resume,” Pavlicek explained. “HR professionals go beyond the resume and look at the complete person to determine whether his or her personality and experience will fit the work culture.” 8. Be prepared to ask questions. Near the conclusion of an interview, prospective employees are usually given an opportunity to ask questions of the interviewer. Interviewees should come prepared with relevant inquiries that show a genuine interest in the company and the specific position. 9. Take notes throughout the interview. Applicants are encouraged to bring a notepad into an interview with the aforementioned questions to ask later. Taking notes also allows interviewees to follow up with pertinent questions based on specific aspects of the business. When taking notes, it is also important to maintain eye contact with the interviewer to show a genuine interest and respect. 10. Follow up. Once the interview winds down, prospective employees should ask for business cards from all the interviewers and other company representatives involved. The interviewee should then follow up with a thank you note or email within 24 hours as a way to thank those involved and show genuine interest in the position.
