allet Hawaii offers its’ Fall Session beginning Sunday, August 25th through November 16th for dancers ages three and up. These classes allow students to experience the joys of dance in a safe, supportive environment in three locations, Kapolei, Wahiawa, and Honolulu. Ballet Hawaii’s three main sessions are Fall, Winter, and Spring. These sessions train dancers to become the best dancer they can be and prepare them to audition and dance in our annual performances. The next production will be Cinderella on August 9, 10, and 11. Students who start in the Fall will be preparing for Nutcracker, with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, at the Blaisdell Concert Hall Dec. 20-22. Ballet Hawaii offers the best performance opportunities of all the dance studios in Hawaii. Professional dancers from major ballet companies dance in our performances and share the stage with our students. This summer, Cinderella, in collaboration with the Washington Ballet, will be an acclaimed summer production presented at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Previous summer productions have included Septime Webre’s Alice (IN WONDERLAND) and Peter Pan, Robert Weiss’ Romeo and Juliet, as well as mixed repertory productions featuring choreography by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. id Potential Hawaii is one of 550 providers of two nationally researched programs called PACE (Processing and Cognitive Enhancement) and Master the Code. The goal of the programs is to build brain-based learning skills until the child (or adult) reaches or exceeds age appropriate levels. Children can increase reading levels up to four years in only 60 to 72 hours of individual instruction, says Kid Potential Hawaii owner and cognitive trainer Stacy Collins. “These are programs with proven results.” Students are able to learn easier and faster, and gain confidence, she says. ith the expansion of the Pas De Deux studio to Waipio at 94-404 Ukee Street, #51A, comes their Grand Opening on July 7th and a FREE TRIAL WEEK of August 1 to 7. Interested children and adults are invited to view the classes being offered for ages three to adults. There is no experience needed and no commitment to sign up for a class. The only requirement is that you look forward to having “fun” and learning to dance, sing or act. The Pas De Deux staff includes its owners Wendy Calio-Gilbert and Jeremy Gilbert, both performers in their own right. Wendy is most recently known for playing “Nina” on Disney Junior’s “Imagination Movers.” Returning home to Hawaii, Wendy and Jeremy opened Pas De Deux in 2010 to bring a variety of performing opportunities to children and adults. eading can have a profound impact on a child’s life in and out of the classroom. Reading can help a young student develop a more extensive vocabulary, and a study from the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics found that reading to young children promotes language acquisition, making it easier for them to learn a foreign language. That’s a significant advantage for children growing up in a world that’s increasingly global. But reading has benefits outside the classroom as well. Reading can provide an escape from the daily grind, which is something even today’s youngsters can appreciate. Reading also is a great way for kids to relax and unwind while simultaneously giving their brains a workout. While many parents recognize the impact reading can have on their children, it’s no secret that getting kids to embrace reading can be difficult. Distractions such as video games, social media and even the great outdoors are all there to draw kids away from reading. But parents who want to instill a love of reading in their children can still take steps to ensure their kids don’t miss out on the benefits of a good book. • Read to your children. Numerous studies have discovered various benefits of reading to children when they are young. The National Center for Education Statistics notes that children whose parents read to them typically become better readers and perform better in school. Reading to children early on is the first step toward fostering a love of reading kids will develop and continue throughout their lives. Many parents read to their children at night before bedtime, but any time of day will suffice. • Don’t be discouraged if kids are not interested in books. While reading fiction can help develop a youngster’s imagination, parents should not be discouraged if kids don’t want to read books. Reading the newspaper, magazines and even comic books can help kids develop strong reading skills and an extensive vocabulary and, in the case of comic books, inspire their imaginations. Young sports fans might be more inclined to read the sports page than
