Credit Unions Build a Better World
O On Thursday, October 18, credit unions in Hawaii, the nation, and the world will come together to celebrate International Credit Union Day and the role financial cooperatives play in improving the communities they serve and the lives of its members. This year’s theme, “Members Matter Most, summarizes the credit unions’ principal mission—creating value through member service. In an era of economic and financial challenges, this theme honors the credit union principle of putting people before profits. It is the goal of all credit unions to offer access to affordable financial services to all members and provide even the most financially disadvantaged with tools and opportunity to be financially self-sufficient. Credit unions are

What is a Credit Union?
A
A credit union is a member-owned, not-for-profit, financial cooperative. Credit unions: s Provide financial products and services—including surcharge-free ATMs, online financial services, and free savings and checking accounts. s Return excess earnings to members by providing better services, better rates, lower fees, and special discounts. s Operate under the philosophy of “people helping people,” allowing members to pool their savings, lend to one another, and own the organization. s Follow conservative investment practices and lend responsibly. What makes credit unions unique? s Equal Ownership – Credit unions are democratically controlled and member-owned and operated. Each member has equal ownership and one vote regardless of how much money he or she has in savings. s Not For Profit – Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that provide a safe, convenient place for members to save money and access loans and other financial services at reasonable rates. s Social Purpose: People Helping People – Credit
The Benefits of Membership
unions exist to serve members, not to make a profit. Every member counts, including those of modest means. This “people-first” philosophy drives credit unions and their employees to get involved in the community and support worthwhile causes. s Volunteer Leadership – Each credit union is governed by a volunteer board of directors elected by and from the credit union’s membership. s Financial Education for Members – Credit unions place particular importance on educational opportunities for members and the public to help everyone become better educated consumers of financial services. s Trust – This year, more than ever, credit unions have received positive press for being trustworthy and resilient during a tumultuous time. Credit union members worldwide can be proud of these accomplishments and rest assured their money is safe at the credit union. Credit unions are chartered and supervised by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).Through this federal agency, savings in federal and most statechartered credit unions are insured by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), a federal fund backed by the United States government.

Why I Love My Credit Union Our credit union is simply the best! They started as Aloha Airlines Federal Credit Union, but now we know them as ‘our Aloha.’ When we first arrived to the islands in 1999, we did what most newcomers would do: We opened accounts with the biggest bank in town. But after learning from co-workers the benefits of joining a credit union, we jumped from that big bank to Aloha Federal. And what a great decision that was! With not a lot of money, and the cost of living in Hawaii so high, we depended on our credit union to help smooth
what would sometimes be our “rough financial edges.” When we encountered unexpected issues with our accounts, someone at the credit union would call us to help us understand and fix things. Everyone at Aloha made it a point of knowing our names, including our two kids and they quickly became more than ‘credit union staff,’ they became our friends. When Aloha Airlines abruptly closed four years ago, our credit union offered us loan payment deferrals and a special program to take care of our outstanding loans. This truly made a
very difficult time manageable. Our Aloha cared. To them it was personal. When my wife needed to finish her college degree at the University of Hawaii, our credit union said ‘yes’ to a lastminute and much needed loan. When we needed a new car, though it might not have been possible at another institution, based largely on the strength of our personal relationship with the credit union, we were able to get our van. Again, our Aloha cared – and it was personal. So personal, that pictures of our family and

drawings from our kids hang behind the counter at our Aloha. Before conducting business, our friends at Aloha ask about work, school, and our lives – most anything other than business first. That’s how it is in Hawaii, and that’s how it is at ALOHA FEDERAL CREDIT UNION. With a name like ‘Aloha,’ they’ve got quite a lot to live up to and they do every day. We can honestly say unequivocally that we love our Aloha Federal Credit Union!

What do you value? Many people value a nice home or a new car in the garage. Others value their families and work hard to ensure a secure future for their loved ones. Still others value giving back to the community. Credit unions care about the things you value in life and work to help you achieve a better way of life. Did you know that credit unions offer a better value for your money? Credit unions typically offer higher returns on savings and lower rates on loans. Why? Credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives that value people before profits. Credit unions are also a safe place to save your money. The National Credit Union Administration, an agency of the Federal government, insures credit union deposits. Credit unions can guide you towards
a better way of life through financial education and counseling. Credit union employees are likely to share car buying tips while processing an auto loan. Many credit unions offer home buying or retirement planning seminars free of charge. A good number of credit unions visit local schools to teach children about wise money management. Credit unions make giving back to the community a regular part of doing business. Whether it's raising thousands of dollars for local charities or providing free income tax preparation services to low-income residents, credit unions believe in empowering the communities they serve. If you are looking for a better value, look no further than a credit union. To join a credit union log onto www. asmarterchoice.org
Web site shows why credit unions are a smarter choice and makes it easy to join Credit unions make a difference for their members and the communities they serve. ASmarterChoice.org, a project of the nation’s credit unions, was developed to help everyone understand that credit unions are the best option for consumers for conducting their financial business. The web site was developed through a partnership between the Credit Union National Association and state credit union leagues (including the Hawaii Credit Union League), with development and maintenance costs borne entirely by the state associations across the nation. There is no charge for consumers or credit unions to use the web site. A key element of aSmarterChoice. org is a “credit union locator” that
directs consumers to a credit union they can join with minimal hassle and no confusion. The credit union finder includes all credit unions—regardless of their charter, affiliation, size, or business models. The web site also includes information about credit unions, the latest “good news” about credit unions appearing in the national, regional, and local news media, and much more.

Free tax help from credit unions benefit low income consumers Each year, the need for free tax assistance grows for those who most can benefit from Earned Income Tax Relief Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC). These refunds help qualified taxpayers ease the burdens placed on them by the challenging economy. A small, effective group of committed credit unions from Hawaii Island, Kauai, Maui, and Oahu have taken up the call to provide Volunteer Income
Tax Assistance (VITA) sites to members and non-members in the community. Hawaii Alliance for CommunityBased Economic Development (HACBED) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) have partnered with Hawaii credit unions to train, certify, and equip credit union managers and staff to support preparation and filing of these tax returns. “We hope people seek out credit unions providing this free service,”

The youngsters were asked to introduce themselves, what school they attend, and how much they’ve saved. The most poignant was third grader Sean Kobayashi, who said he has saved over $700 but could have saved more had he not spent so much, which drew a collective laugh from the audience. Sean’s innocent comment made it obvious the concept of financial sustainability has been learned.
