Christmas

Tree

lighting tips

Lighting a Christmas tree may seem like child’s play, but time and again people struggle with the task. Untangling wires and wrapping them around boughs can be nerve wracking, w racking, but lighting a tree doesn’t have h ave to be a chore when you follow some tips from the professionals. First, keep in mind that wrapping lights around the tree horizontally is more work and often doesn’t produce a multi-dimensional effect. Rather, string the lights from the trunk up to the top, working vertically. This is actually how the tree decorators at Rockefeller Center in New York City do the famous tree year after year.

This method helps eliminate tangled wires and empty spots. Remember to plug in the strands of lights before you begin to check for burnt-out bulbs and to adjust the spacing of lights to prevent dark spots. Think about varying light bulb sizes to add more dimension. String an inner layer of small LED white lights to produce an inner glow on the tree before adding larger, colored lights on top to increase visual appeal. Just be sure to match the same wattage of the lights so that you do not have power surges and can prolong the life of the bulbs.

Christmas movies

Christmas Day has become a big day in the movie business. Many studios now release big-budget films on December 25th, and audiences have recently flocked to the theaters tto o see some of their favorite stars iin n films that opened on Christmas Day D ay or shortly before. According to Box Office Mojo, an online movie publication and box office reporting service, no film has fared better on Christmas Day than “Sherlock Holmes,” which premiered on December 25, 2009, earning just under $25 million in its initial day onscreen. “Avatar,” the 2009 James Cameron film that would go on to gross $760 million in domestic receipts alone, holds the distinction of earning the second most money on Christmas

Day, when it earned a little more than $23 million despite having already been out in the theaters one full week. The 2004 Ben Stiller film “Meet the Fockers” opened three days before Christmas but still managed to earn $19.5 million on Christmas Day. A pair of 2012 films, the latest big screen adaptation of “Les Miserables” ($18 million) and Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” ($15 million), round out the top five highest grossing films on Christmas Day. Numerous films are slated to open on December 25, 2013, including Stiller’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” starring Chris Pine and Kevin Costner.

‘Tis the Season for sharing germs.

The hustle and bustle of holiday celebrations will soon be upon us. This time of year can be wonderful, but it also brings a certain amount of stress. The lastminute shopping, family visits, kids running around the house and over-crowded shopping centers is exhausting just to think about. All of that added stress also can affect your immune system. Hugs and handshakes represent golden opportunities for viruses, parasites and bacteria to join in the spirit of Holiday sharing. You wonder how you will ever make it through the season without catching something.

And then you may ask yourself: Can probiotics really boost my immune system? The answer is yes. According to dietitian and nutritionist Annie Jolicoeur, many clinical studies have demonstrated the benefits of probiotics in terms of preventing and treating the common cold, the flu and gastroenteritis. “Taking probiotics reduces the severity and duration of symptoms like fever, coughing, runny nose, and even diarrhea,” explains Jolicoeur. “Therefore, it is recommended that all members of the family take probiotics every day.” “Did you know that the intestinal mucous

membrane acts as the ‘cornerstone’ of your overall health? Two-thirds of the immune-defense cells in your body are found there. Therefore, your immune system is enhanced when you take probiotics.” Here’s a tip: Jolicoeur recommends you start taking probiotics at least two weeks before the holiday season begins, so that your body will be well prepared to ward off the oncoming germ attacks. More information on the benefits of probiotics is available at probaclac.ca.

The holiday season is significant for a variety of reasons. In addition to its religious significance, the holiday season is when many retailers enjoy their greatest successes. To understand just how much business Christmas can bring in, consider the following figures. • 20: The percentage of annual sales jewelry stores indicate are made during the month of December. • 150,205: The number of clothing and accessories stores open in the United States as of 2009.

2011 to 2012. Online sales generally make up about 10 percent of total holiday business. • 70: The number, in millions, of poinsettia plants sold in the United States each year. • 107,000: The projected cost, adjusted for inflation, of all of the gifts in “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” • 74: The percentage of adults who say the female head of the household is most likely to wrap all of the family’s gifts.

The holiday season means it’s time once again for parents to take their youngsters to visit Santa Claus for picture taking and youngsters are often anxious for their chances to share their Christmas gift wishes with the jolly man in red. But parents know after waiting in long lines to see Santa, it’s understandable when everyone’s patience starts to wear thin. Pictures with Santa can go much more smoothly when you employ the following tips. • Prep children. Begin talking up Santa a few weeks before Christmas, mentioning how nice and friendly he is. If costumes elicit screams of horror from you child, wait another year before seeing Santa.

• Visit during off-peak hours.

Weekends and evenings are the busiest times to visit Santa. Instead of dealing with the masses, try to get to the mall when the doors first open. Otherwise, take the children after school and visit during the week when the lines are shorter. • Go well-fed. Hunger pangs can turn even the most placid child into a menace. Pack snacks to enjoy while waiting. Opt for items that will not stain lips and teeth or drip onto clothing. • Make it a family photo. Sometimes the only way to entice a little one to take a picture with Santa is to dress your best and be prepared to step in and cozy up to Santa to ensure your child is all smiles.

Cash has become an increasingly popular gift in recent years. Once considered impersonal, cash is now a go-to gift for shoppers whose foremost concerns are putting smiles on their loved ones’ faces. Those who still hesitate at the thought of giving an envelope full of cash, take note: There are ways to give green that make cash gifts just as enjoyable to give as to receive. • Put it on plastic. In many ways, carrying cash has become less convenient than swiping debit

Clever Way to give cash gifts or credit cards when making purchases big and small. Gifters can choose gift cards from favorite shops or restaurants. Those who want to make their cash gifts even more convenient can purchase a prepaid debit or credit card that recipients can use anywhere, whether it’s buying something for themselves or even filling up the car with fuel. • Pool your resources. Another unique way to give cash gifts is to pool your resources with fellow loved ones. Gather resources from family

members who can contribute to a given gift card, making it much easier for family members to gift cash to their loved ones. This is especially convenient when loved ones have expensive bigticket items on their holiday wish lists. Cash has become an increasingly popular and convenient option when gifting loved ones on special occasions. Gifters now have a host of options at their disposal to make their cash gifts more unique.

Doctors are prescribing meDical sheepskin for its natural healing properties. Studies worldwide continue to show that sheepskins are an effective tool in the prevention of bedsores, and helping people rest better. More doctors are recommending sheepskins for their patients, for babies, and active men and women. Medical sheepskins help regulate body temperature, providing cool comfort in the summer and warmth in the winter. When used to sit or lie on, natural sheepskin distributes pressure evenly under the body allowing air circulation. It helps to relax and regenerate the body. In 2003, a study by doctors at The Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia, showed that medical sheepskins reduce the likelihood of bedsores by 58%! They also found that bedsores are usually fully preventable! Bedsores (AKA pressure sores, pressure ulcers), are a commonly encountered problem experienced by

people who are confined to a bed or sitting in a chair for long periods. Confined movement creates pressure on the skin where the body weight is supportednormally the lower back, buttocks, shoulders, and heels. This closes tiny arteries at the skins surface and prevents vital nutrients from reaching the skin

into deep decubitus ulcers, which could eat through muscles and tendons. Seniors are most at risk because their skin is very fragile. Medical sheepskin’s soft springy wool helps pre-

Don’t Let Dinner Be a budget-buster

Many people worry about the expenses of the holidays. Individuals who are already pinching pennies and putting as much toward gifts as possible may want to keep holiday entertaining costs low. It’s possible to do so without sacrificing quality. Christmas dinner is something families look forward to each year. Some enjoy a roasted turkey; others turn to cultural foods. Others may eat a big meal both on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The hosts and hostesses who serve Christmas dinner often open their homes up to a number of guests to enjoy the meal. It’s not uncommon to find 10 to 12 friends or family members gathered around the dining table -- and feeding all those people can get expensive. If finances are tight, a big Christmas dinner can certainly put a strain on the budget. To cut costs, consider these frugal tips. * Shop the sales. Plan the menu in advance

36 μ HOLIDAY 2013

and comparison shop the non-perishable items. Stock up on the foods needed that can be stored in the pantry until preparation time. The closer a person shops to Christmas, the higher the prices on certain items may be. * Choose lower-priced foods. Who says filet mignon has to be served on Christmas? As long as the food is tasty, guests will enjoy it. Consider menu items that can be bought in bulk (less expensive) and turned into delicious meals. A platter of chicken with lemon-butter sauce could win rave reviews over the tired turkey anyway. * Don’t overdo it. Party hosts often over-buy food thinking there will not be enough. After crackers and cheese, salad, appetizers, and some other courses, guests may be stuffed to the gills and only pick at the main meal. Scale back the courses and focus on one or two things. * Have a holiday pot luck. Hosts can ask

guests to bring one food item with them to lessen the financial burden. Friends and family will be more than happy to pitch in. * Consider store brands. Many store brand foods are equal in taste and quality to the brand name items ... but at lower costs. This is because store brands are not advertised and don’t have to pay for publicity. This can help budgetconscious shoppers save a little at the check-out. * Avoid pre-made foods. Convenience foods, like frozen appetizers or dips, often cost more per serving than if they are made at home from scratch. Scratch-cooking takes a little more time, but it is often more economical. * Skip the meal, altogether. If conversation and mingling are more the speed of the gathering, host a cocktail party instead. Serve finger foods and one or two signature drinks. Less time around the table means more moments for merrymaking anyway.

Down to Earth has been making a positive contribution to our community and our planet since 1977. It all began when a group of friends in Wailuku, Maui, turned their enthusiasm and passion for organic and natural foods and their vegetarian values into a great store that has become one of Hawaii’s leading kama‘aina providers of local, fresh, organic and natural products. Their awardwinning deli, hot table and salad bar are particularly noteworthy. Each year, Down to Earth typically purchases over $3 million in products from 400 local vendors including more than 100 local farmers! In addition to its location in Kapolei Commons, the company has stores in Honolulu, Kailua, and Pearlridge; and Kahului on Maui.

The Tale of

the Rockerfeller Center Tree

The first Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center was erected in 1931, two years before the opening of Rockefeller Plaza, where the tree now draws thousands of tourists each year. The tradition began when construction workers hard at work on building Rockefeller Center decorated a roughly 20-foot tall balsam fir tree on Christmas Eve in 1931. Strings of cranberries and tin cans were among the items used to decorate the tree. While there was no tree in 1932, the first official tree was unveiled in 1933 in Rockefeller Plaza, and the lighting ceremony was broadcast over NBC Radio. The 1933 tree, at 50 feet tall, dwarfed the 1931 tree.

However, the 1933 tree paled in comparison to the 10-ton Norway Spruce erected in 1999, which measured 100-feet tall and remains the tallest tree ever erected at Rockefeller Center. The tradition of the Rockefeller Center tree continues to evolve to this day, but the evergreen it is no longer lit with incandescent light bulbs. LED bulbs that consume a fraction of the energy of traditional bulbs are the bulbs of choice now. In addition, in 2007 Rockefeller Center partnered with Habitat for Humanity, who used the tree after it was taken down to furnish lumber for home construction.

E-Cards

50 μ HOLIDAY 2013

an alternative to Paper Christmas Greetings

Estimates say that 2.65 billion Christmas cards are sold in the United States each year. That’s enough paper to fill a football field 10 stories high. Most of these cards end up in a trash can come the end of the year, which contributes to the millions of pounds of extra trash generated during the holidays. As an alternative, many environmentally conscious, or just cost-conscious, people turn to e-cards. E-cards are digital cards either sent through e-mail or an online card service. Many e-cards are available at no cost if you know where to look. Other retailers offer e-cards at a minimal cost, or some enable shoppers to subscribe to a monthly service for a low price. Although many people use e-cards because they’re free, convenient and eco-friendly, it’s unlikely that e-cards will replace paper Christmas cards entirely. That’s because the tradition and the sentiment of sending greetings through the mail has been in place for centuries. Those who send out e-cards can establish a list of recipients by compiling the most current e-mail addresses of friends and family. Individual e-greetings are more personal. However, some people choose to post one universal greeting online through a social networking site, like Facebook. Although e-cards can be sent immediately, that doesn’t mean you should wait until the last minute to send them. Let the person enjoy the sentiments for a few weeks, just as you would with a paper card. Add a few personalized sentiments to the greeting so it’s not just a bland, mass e-mailed sentiment. Consider designing your own greeting card as another option. Use either design or wordprocessing software to create a card and then save it as a PDF file, which can be opened with a program like Acrobat(R) Reader. It can then be e-mailed as an attachment.

Dos Don’ts

of Holiday Shopping Thanks to sales featuring heavily discounted items, millions of people wait to start their holiday shopping until the season hits full swing. But in spite of such bargains, overextending budgets during the holiday season is too tempting for many shoppers to resist. However, shoppers need not risk financial peril if they shop smartly and heed some dos and don’ts of holiday shopping. • Do set a budget. Establish what you can afford to spend on gifts and other seasonal trimmings early on. The National Retail Federation estimates that the average consumer will spend around $700 come the holiday season. But not every person needs to be a big spender. The “buy now, pay later” mentality that credit cards offer lands many shoppers in trouble, a sticky situation many only notice once the first bill comes due. If you cannot afford to pay your entire credit card balance off once the bill arrives, you face steep interest charges that can quickly add up. Instead, pick a set spending limit and keep to it no matter

how tempting it may seem to overspend with a credit card. • Do schedule time for shopping. Hectic schedules sometimes result in last-minute shopping that leads to impulse purchases. Schedule some distraction-free time for your holiday shopping so you’re less likely to rush into purchases before thinking them through. • Don’t double buy. Some shoppers use the holidays as an excuse to buy more for themselves than the people on their lists. While it’s tempting to treat yourself come the holiday season, this is a great and quick way to deplete your budget. If you plan on using holiday deals to supplement your own wardrobe or household needs, reduce your spending the rest of the year and save money for year-end purchases. • Do collect coupons and look for purchasing incentives. Comparison shopping not only helps you get the best price, but also it can shed light on coupons, shipping discounts and other

incentives that lower the overall cost of products. Search online for Web sites that publish coupons and codes for online discounts, including free shipping. Join a store’s marketing list and receive emails with deals sent directly to your inbox. • Don’t be afraid to delay some purchases if need be. If hosting a post-holiday gathering where gifts will be exchanged, it’s perfectly acceptable to delay buying those gifts until after Christmas. Many stores reduce prices on merchandise come December 26, so you can wait until after the holidays to shop for items that will be exchanged with distant friends and relatives. • Do keep a level head. Some people forget the true meaning of the season is spending time with loved ones. Getting swept away by shopping and worrying about deadlines can make the season less enjoyable. Don’t allow the stress of holiday shopping to compromise an otherwise joyous time of year.
