An Open, Shut Case for Clean Windows Here’s the dirt on how homeowners can make window washing a relatively “pane”-free experience

hen it comes to keeping your windows clean, the secret doesn’t have much to do with the cleaning. It’s what happens in between cleanings that really counts. The solution is often very simple: Avoid dirt. For starters, think about the area outside your windows. What does your landscaping look like? Many trees, bushes and flowers give off pollen. When the wind blows, it carries the pollen through the air, and if your windows are nearby, that’s just where they will end up. You also want to be mindful of plants that

W

need watering. Water splatters and hard water leaves mineral deposits. But it’s not just landscaping that you should pay attention to. Where do you keep your grill? If it’s close to your windows, you may be inviting things like grease, oil and sauce to stick around where they’re not wanted. And remember not to ignore your screens. If you have exterior-mounted screens, clean them when you clean your windows. These screens often trap dust and pollen. When it rains, the dirt washes onto your windows — and stays there until you clean it off. Another solution may lie in the windows themselves. Some products use a material that actually prevents window spotting. For

example, Anlin™ double-hung windows have this feature. The manufacturers coat the glass with thin layers of silicon dioxide and titanium dioxide. The coating fills in the natural peaks and valleys that are inherent in all glass, and creates an incredibly smooth surface that allows rain to sheet away rather than bead and leave spots. The material is also formulated to react with UV rays to decompose organic materials on the glass. As an added bonus, both panes of the window can be folded in. This makes cleaning much safer and easier because it allows you to clean the outside of the window and screens from inside your home. No need for ladders for upper-floor windows. You can find Anlin™ products at Windows Hawaii.

Taking pride in quality workmanship

hen you are considering replacing doors, windows or siding in your home, there are a number of key elements: quality of material, value, competitive pricing, lifetime warranty. While all of those things are important, what makes Windows Hawaii stand out from the rest? The answer is people. People who take pride in what they do and are happy doing it. The result is a professional product that brings about satisfied customers. At the completion of every job, we send a survey to find out how we did in every aspect of the job. Here’s the feedback we get:

W

Just wanted to drop a line and say thank you so much for everything. The completion of the installation of our windows was yesterday. The entire process was a joy and positive experience. I thank you for your expertise, suggestions and professional manner in ordering the windows. I would like to exceptionally praise the timeliness and scheduling of the order, the solid cost estimate and the organized way you and your company did business. I am blown away by the professionalism of your installation crew. They were extremely hard working, considerate, respectful, neat, really friendly and very talented carpenters. I

could see the pride they took in their work. I was continuously impressed and delighted with what I was seeing everyday. The windows themselves are functional, beautiful and secure. I am a 100-percent satisfied customer. I hope to call upon you again later this year to install the windows in our upcoming renovation.

Good job! Especially impressed with this group of young men and their supervisor — friendly, polite, with good work habits and taking pride in their workmanship. Will highly recommend your services to anyone showing interest in improving their homes. Thank you, J.H. Another satisfied customer expressed:

Aloha, G. Y. Another letter reads:

BIA-HAWAII

Be your own contractor with an owner-builder permit BY KAREN NAKAMURA

ith the rising cost of construction and high unemployment in that industry, many owners are choosing to take on the responsibilities of a contractor under the Owner Builder Permit Exemption laws that allow Owner Builder Permits. As the owner-builder, you are the contractor on record and responsible for compliance to the regulations of federal, state and county laws that govern construction: OSHA, EPA, taxes, insurance, etc. Violations of these regulations have heavy fines that are levied by the agencies and ignorance does not exempt you from compliance. You are also liable for all persons who enter the project site. The two state laws that govern owner-builder permits are HRS 444-2.5, Owner-builder Exemption; and HRS 4449.1, Issuance of building permits, owner-builder registration. These permits can be found at www.capitol.hawaii.gov /hrs.aspx?query=Owner%Builder%20Owner. HRS 444-2.5 allows the exemption of the owner-builder. HRS 444-9.1 says that the county shall not issue a building permit to the owner-applicant until the applicant signs a statement that the applicant has read and understands the disclosure form. Portions of the disclosure statement reads as follows: “The exemption provided in section 444-2.5, Hawaii Revised Statutes, allows you, as the owner or lessee of

W

your property, to act as your own general contractor even though you do not have a license. You must supervise the construction yourself. You must also hire licensed subcontractors. The building must be for your own use and occupancy. It may not be built for sale or lease ... It is your responsibility to make sure that subcontractors hired by you have licenses required by state law and by county licensing ordinances ... Your construction must comply with all applicable laws, ordinances, building codes and zoning regulations. If you violate section 444-2.5 or fail to comply with the requirements set forth in this disclosure statement, you may be fined $5,000 or forty percent of the appraised value of the building as determined by the coun-

ty tax appraiser, whichever is greater, for the first offense; and $10,000 or 50 percent of the appraised value of the building as determined by the county tax appraiser, whichever is greater, for any subsequent offense.” To read more about the building permit requirements of the City and County of Honolulu, visit www.honolulu.gov. REVOLUSUN

SEPTEMBER 2 • 2012 7

Shining a ray of light on home energy I n July 2009, a RevoluSun began. Since then, Hawaii’s leading solar company, RevoluSun, has installed thousands of solar systems, producing more than 20 MW of energy. That’s about twice the amount of its nearest competitor. “When you look at the huge growth in the solar industry, with both local and Mainland companies setting up shop here, we are proud to be Hawaii’s largest local solar company,” said Eric Carlson, RevoluSun principal. “It wasn’t our goal to be the largest, but I feel that our team’s mission to provide our customers with the highest level of service, solar knowledge and installation has resonated with Hawaii homeowners.” Proprietary software promotes transparency RevoluSun’s project developers are empowered through RiSE™, its proprietary software developed right here in Hawaii. RiSE™ allows project developers to clearly walk homeowners through the quoting process, while also eliminating unnecessary back-and-forth, to develop a bid. “I was so impressed with my installation — the attention to detail and level of expertise my project developer had in custom-fitting our system to my home,” said John Cheever, homeowner. “In fact, my experience with RevoluSun motivated me to enter the green energy industry and I joined the RevoluSun team. Now with RiSE™, I can use this tool to help so many other Hawaii

homeowners understand the process and get the system they really need.” Partnership with kamaaina company American Piping & Boiler (APB) is a highly respected contractor with a long history of successful projects in Hawaii’s energy industry. Founded in 1965, APB is a locally owned general and electrical contractor. Through this partnership, RevoluSun provides the design, permitting and exceptional customer service needed to ensure the job runs smoothly while APB handles the installation. “The opportunity to partner with an experienced company like American Piping and Boiler (APB) has been a game changer for RevoluSun,” said Carlson. “APB runs an incredible operation and their proven installation methods are unmatched in Hawaii. For nearly 50 years, APB has built a reputation for safely completing projects of the highest quality. We feel it is a perfect match between RevoluSun and APB, and that we are going to continue to raise the bar here in Hawaii for a long time.” As Hawaii’s leading solar provider, locally owned RevoluSun is building cleaner, smarter communities one rooftop at a time. To schedule your free home energy evaluation, visit a solar open house or learn more about how you can join the RevoluSun, call 748-8888 or visit www.RevoluSun.com.

ALUMINUM SHAKE ROOFING INC.

‘Shake’ things up with a new roofing system M

any homeowners have found the Country Manor Shake (CMS) roof system to be an innovative yet cost-effective way to enhance the value and beauty of their homes. But the CMS roof may be an even better solution for a townhouse complex, subdivision or planned community, especially those that are currently covered with an aging asphalt composition, or “rent-a-roof.” Asphalt roofs are unattractive and susceptible to weathering damage. They’re hot and require quite a bit of maintenance. They have to be replaced every 15 years on average, regardless of what the warranty claims, and they double in price every 10 to 15 years or so. Even though they appear to be low-cost, they’re actually one of the more expensive re-roof choices you can make. Members of The Hawaiian King Home Owners Association (AOAO) have found that one of the best ways to save money while adding real value to their complex is to upgrade their conventional roof by selecting the Country Manor Shake roof system and having it installed by Aluminum Shake Roofing Inc. (ASR). The company has re-roofed more than a dozen complexes on four islands and has a reputation for getting the job done — on time and on budget. ASR can even set up a payment schedule in which you don’t have to put up a lot of cash before the work is actually done.

You will get the look of beautiful, hand-split cedar shakes, but without the drawbacks. Take a look at the photos on this page. Rust-free aluminum will never rot or blow off, can be walked on without special knowledge and the roof has the highest fire rating required by the building code. The finish is warranted not to come off or fade more than a very small amount for 30 years. Most of the time, the CMS roof can be installed right on top of a conventional roof, which saves the time and expense of a tear-off and keeps the old roof out of the landfill. ALTERNATE ENERGY

Making the switch to solar energy A lternate Energy Hawaii (AEI) recently completed a photovoltaic (PV) installation for the Hawk family in Manoa. Customer Aubrey Hawk sent the company this note: Dear AEI, I wanted to let you know how thrilled we are with our new PV solar system from Alternate Energy. Our family had been struggling with our electric bills. Over the last few years, we had done everything we could to reduce our usage. We rarely used AC. We installed a solar water heater and then hooked our downstairs tenants’ hot water line into that. We replaced our washer and dryer

with high-efficiency appliances. We moved a chest freezer out of its sunny location into the shade. We even built a clothes line! Despite our efforts, our bills kept climbing each month. I felt really helpless and frustrated. The last straw was when I received an electric bill approaching $400. It was time to make the switch to solar. This was a big investment for our family. I did a lot of research and decided to go with AEI. While price was certainly a consideration for us (AEI somewhere in the middle), we were certain AEI was the right choice when we researched product, licensing and company history. Being able to purchase the Mitsubishi panels — a top product from a trusted, time-honored manufac-

turer — via a certified Mitsubishi Elite Dealer gave us peace of mind in this relatively new field. We knew this company was not only making the best product, but would be around for a long time to honor its warranty. We also learned that AEI techs hold the state’s highest certifications. In particular, we got to know your owner and founder, Bruce Ekimura, who holds a Journeyman Plumber license and a Hawaii Solar Power Systems Contractor license, which covers both solar water heating and photovoltaic systems. We were gratified to learn that Bruce and his team have been solar energy experts in Hawaii since the 1970s. The installation crew was courteous and professional, all employed by Alternate Energy and not just subcontractors. Our installation was completed in July. We have just received our first post-install HECO bill — only $18! We love you, AEI!

WALKER-MOODY CONSTRUCTION

Discover the solid benefits of fog sealing D

on’t let your investment get oxidized and crumble away. Repair the potholes, fill the cracks, fog seal the surface and restripe with a nice, vibrant paint. A fog seal is a light application of emulsion sprayed on an existing asphalt surface. Plasti-Pave Rejuvenator is an acrylic reinforced asphalt emulsion. It is used to penetrate the old asphalt surfaces that have become dry and to seal very small cracks and surface voids. It also coats aggregate particles at the surface. This product has been used in the private sector on Oahu and the Big Island. It has also been applied as a demonstration by the City and County of Honolulu and for the Honolulu International Airport. This product has been designed for Hawaii asphalts. When projects cannot afford repaving, slurry or sealcoating, fog sealing with PlastiPave is a budget-friendly option. It will allow the surface to receive a maintenance coat for less money. The heart of an effective pavement maintenance program includes periodic coating with an asphalt-based emulsion

WALKER-MOODY CONSTRUCTION

contact // 839-2781 • construction@walker-moody.com web // www.walker-moody.com pavement sealer. Asphalt-based emulsions are not toxic like coal tar, and they are water-based, which results in an easier clean up. Left untreated, asphalt pavement will deteriorate rapidly. It is made up of asphalt binder and rock. Almost immediately after paving, the asphalt binder combines with oxygen and becomes brittle or oxidized; this leads to cracking and weathering soon after installation. Moisture penetrates the asphalt causing further damage and deterioration to the pavement. A fog seal protects against oxidation. An unsealed pavement allows water to penetrate into and through the pavement structure leading to base erosion, and ultimately pavement failure. Fog seals provide a pro-

tective barrier to stop water penetration. Also, if left unsealed, oil and gasoline will soften and deteriorate the exposed asphalt binder. Fog seals provide a protective barrier that resists attack from oil and gasoline. Once the fog seal begins to wear off from the aggregate and the rock is exposed, it’s

time to apply another coat. Walker-Moody Construction has the latest technology and training. You can call 839-2781 to talk to one of its trained professionals. They will come out and review your property, measure the asphalt for accuracy, provide recommendations in a formal proposal and will deliver on-time and on-budget projects. If you are part of an association or board, they will also talk with directors or attend board meetings to answer questions. Whether you want a quick fix or a long-term solution, give them a call because they fix it all. Asphalt maintenance work for Walker-Moody Construction is now approaching 10 million square feet. Another Manic Monday? Stop working yourself into a lather over the job you dislike going to on Mondays. Get a fresh perspective about your career by adopting these feng shui-friendly tips for the home and office

“Feng Shui – The Easy Way!”

with

Alice Inoue

Join Alice for a special presentation, “Feng Shui - The Easy Way!”, on Sunday, Sept. 23, from 3 to 5:30 p.m., and go home with a feng shui instructional DVD of your choice. To register, visit www.aliceinspired.com or call 436-8234. Seating is limited.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I don’t like going to work. What suggestions do you have when it comes to someone who dreads Monday mornings?

ou are not alone. A large percentage of America’s working population admits that it does not enjoy going to work on Monday morning. Lessen the dread of the “Monday morning blues” by understanding exactly why you do not like your work. Get clear, reframe your thoughts, set new intentions, and make changes to your home and office environment to support a new vision. Consider the advice that best fits your circumstance:

Y

If you dislike the work you do, be honest with yourself about the reasons why. Is the job not challenging enough? Are you in the wrong type of job? Are you shy and introverted, yet work in sales? Do you need movement and communication, yet work in a stationary and silent environment? Do you even believe in the work you do? It may be time to discover what you do like and pursue a change. Feng Shui Support: Bring in more light. Light represents ideas, illumination, clarity and opportunities. Also, bring in more water. Water is associated with “flow” and career opportunities. Place a fountain or an image of water in the entryway of your home to symbolize and influence the flow of positive movement and energy.

If you have to deal with difficult people, look into taking courses to develop skills to deal with challenging personalities or look within to discover what it is you are really reacting to. Perhaps you are part of the problem. Learn skills to control your emotions around them, set stronger boundaries and especially learn how not to

take things personally. Meanwhile, place your focus on the areas of your work that are rewarding. Feng Shui Support: Get two of the same kind of plant for visual and energetic support. Place one at home and the other in your office to create balance and to anchor you when you are in either space. Choose red blossoms or place them in red pots to boost personal power. If you dislike the negativity of the people, it may just be a matter of seeing things from a new perspective. For a greater sense of appreciation, write down the positive attributes of your job. What do love about it? For example, is it the regular income, stability, inner-satisfaction, or positive work-related challenges? If you can find nothing positive, it may be time for change. Feng Shui Support: Use color in your clothing or accessories to help dissipate negativity. To help burn off negativity, wear “fire” colors such as red, orange, coral, burgundy and purple; and, to ground you, use “earth” colors such as brown, tan and gold.

If you feel over worked and underpaid, communicate with management about the need for more resources and how they would benefit the business. Are you doing other people’s work out of habit? If so, learn to let others take responsibility for themselves. If working long hours is typical of the industry in which you work and you feel burnt out, maybe you need a change or a vacation. Feng Shui Support: Sometimes what you feel at work reflects what needs tending to at home. Do some repair work around the house. Fix leaky faucets and unclog drains. Replace burned out and flickering lights to stop the loss of energy. Also, add green to your environment. Green represents “wood” energy and will help to add the energy of vitality to your environment.

phant figurine and put it near a window or door. Elephants have strong trunks and represent power and strength.Third, keep such things as your purse, briefcase, or other personal items off the floor. These items represent you, and things placed on the floor get stepped on. Promote yourself to a higher position.

Above all, find a way to change your situation whether by changing your job, your habits or your perspective. Don’t let your circumstances dictate your life. We spend over half our lives at work. Make it a top priority to find work that truly fits who you are and makes a difference in this world.

If you feel that people take advantage of you, changing jobs is not the answer. More than likely, you have developed a pattern of behavior that needs to change. A closer look at hardwood flooring Types and finishes that instantly add value to your home

hoosing hardwood flooring for your home can be a valuable investment. Multiple surveys estimate that hardwood flooring can add as much as $7,000$10,000 to a home’s resale value. And a study conducted by the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) revealed that 99 percent of U.S. real estate agents asserted that homes with hardwood flooring are easier to sell; 90 percent said that homes with hardwood flooring sell for more money, and up to 10 percent more in fact. In order to get the most out of your valuable investment in American Hardwood, here are the flooring options you need to know about before you buy:

installations. It is installed by nailing the wood to the subfloor.

Solid wood floors Solid hardwood flooring comes in three basic types known as strip, plank and parquet:

• One tip to keep in mind is that solid hardwood flooring expands and contracts because of changes in your home’s humidity. Installers can compensate for this by leaving an expansion gap between the floor and the wall.

C

• Plank floor boards are at least three inches wide, and can be screwed or nailed to the subfloor.

Engineered wood Engineered wood is made of multiple layers of different grades or styles of wood that are stacked and glued together under high heat and pressure. This type of flooring is less likely to be affected by changes in humidity.

• Parquet flooring comes in standardized blocks, but specialty patterns can be made much larger. Parquet floors often create a dramatic geometric look.

Wood laminates Wood laminates consist of a plywood base topped with a layer of veneer. The veneer coating on wood laminate floors can be sanded and refinished. In fact, you can

do this up to three times in most cases. After selecting the type of hardwood flooring, the next step is choosing a finish that will enhance the wood’s beauty and protect the floor from everyday wear, dirt and moisture. The finish will also give hardwood a rich color and luster to match your home’s look and feel. You have a few hardwood finishing options to choose from: Surface finishes These are the most popular choice of stains and involve applying a stain to achieve color followed by a top coat to add a layer of protection. Surface finishes are durable and easy to maintain. • Oil-based urethane is the most commonly used floor finish. It is available in different sheens and is generally applied in multiple coats. It also ambers with age. • Water-based urethane provides a clear finish and produces fewer odors, has a quicker dry time and is easier clean-up. • Moisture-cured urethane is a solvent-based solution mostly used in commercial applications. It is more durable and moisture-resistant than other options. • Conversion varnishes are a professionals-only appli-

cation product that is often used in commercial spaces.

Making it silky smooth

Penetrating stains and finishes These finishes penetrate the wood to form a protective seal. The stains soak in to provide the color, and a wax coating provides a low-gloss satin sheen. These finishes require special care, as certain products (waterbased products) should not be used on the floors.

U

nearthed Paints, a manufacturer of eco-friendly paints and plasters, is pleased to announce its new, natural Hard Wax Oil finish — a durable surface treatment, ensuring excellent protection for wood, cork and stone in interior applications. Unearthed Hard Wax Oil is produced from natural raw materials, is non-toxic and VOC-free, contributing to a healthy living environment. It’s a simple, natural alternative to give a stylish update to the wood floors or furniture in your home. The finish provides a natural, breathable silky-matte finish that penetrates deep into the pores to enhance the wood’s natural beauty. The transparent, honey tinge hue allows the wood’s inherent characteristics to show through. To learn more, visit www.unearthedpaints.com.

Sheen options Choice of sheen is a personal preference but it’s helpful to keep in mind that high-gloss finishes show scuffs and scratches more easily than low-gloss or satin finishes. High-gloss finishes also reflect more light and are typically used in commercial settings, while satin finishes are usually favored for more traditional applications. Extra-durable finishes One of the latest trends in hardwood finishes are products designed to extend the life of the floor and make them extra-durable. Some manufacturers state that these finishes are ten times more durable than other finishes, and can last for up to 25 years. Swedish finishes and acrylic finishes are the most popular types of extra-durable products. For more information on choosing American Hardwood flooring and finishes, visit www.hard woodinfo.com.

CATHY LEE

Ten Ways to Shop Like a Pro Decorating your home should never be an exercise in futility. Follow these guidelines to keep your next shopping spree in focus and guarantee your abode the character it deserves Left: Sources of inspiration may come from magazines or online sites. Bottom: Varying the scale of your pattern creates a more unique look. COURTESY PHOTOS

oes this sound familiar? You’re in a store, looking for a gift or browsing on your lunch hour, when you stumble across the most gorgeous lamp, painting, rug — you name it. Nothing could be more perfect for your home! Except once the purchase arrives, you realize that it’s too big. Or too formal. Or too red. I’m all for retail therapy, but the fact is inspired purchases often end up right back at the sales counter as returns. How do we avoid the disappointment and waste of time? The answer is to shop with focus. Whether you’re furnishing and decorating from scratch or simply updating your space, here are some guidelines that will help you achieve the space you want with fewer missteps:

D

Style Tip No. 1: Find your inspiration photos. Look in magazines, in décor books and online. Search for styles, colors, lines and shapes that speak to you and work with the architectural style of your home. Then take those photos with you when shopping to keep you on track. Style Tip No. 2: Determine your style or styles. Is your dominant decorating style urban? Island? Rustic Asian? You don’t have to choose just one, but you should determine your choices first, then stick to items within these choices. Style Tip No. 3: Choose your colors. What colors do you want to play up — ear th tones with splashes of gold? Charcoal and cream anchored by black accents? Be careful not to overdose on one color, though, unless you’re going for a highly stylized, monochromatic look. If you know you need a brown sofa, there’s no point in looking at beige. Rather, focus on the chocolates!

14 • SEPTEMBER 2, 2012

of the space. You’ll need hard-wearing, resistant surfaces, fabrics and accessories for kid-friendly rooms. Save the antiques for grown-up spaces, where you can go more elegant and expensive.

Style Tip No. 4: Contrast textures. Does your room have too much wood? Stone? Fabric? Your mix of texture can spell the difference between boring and dramatic, chaos and sophistication. Juxtaposing different textures makes each one pop, so find a wool or sisal rug to lay between wood floor and wooden furniture, and try glass or metal bowls on your wooden coffee table, or stone figurines for your glass shelves. And here and there, repeat some of these textures to tie the room together. Style Tip No. 5: Lay out a furniture plan. Nothing stops irrational furniture purchases better than having a plan. Style Tip No. 6: Measure! There’s a world of beautiful furniture, ceiling fans, mirrors, rugs and art out there. Knowing your sofa is seven feet long will tell you that painting for the wall above should be smaller. An 8-inch shelf will have a hard

Style Tip No. 9: Have enough pattern? Patterns are the accents of the texture world. Too often they are overlooked in decorating — rooms have too many clashing patterns, or none at all. One or two bold patterns should dominate, and if you want more, bring in a mediumsize or small pattern. My favorite showcases for pattern: throw pillows and area rugs.

Style Tip No. 10: Threesomes work. If you have room for a grouping of accessories, look for items that would work in a trio. They don’t all have to be the same thing — in fact, they should be of varying heights and sizes — but they do have to share at least one unifying element, such as color or shape.

time holding a 10-inch bowl. Style Tip No. 7: Vary heights. Does your room look incomplete, or overly imposing? Too many short or too many tall pieces create these effects. When you shop for furniture, lamps and accessories, keep in mind the goal of varying heights across a room — it will look more composed. Style Tip No. 8: Consider the function

These tips will help save you time, money and frustration. So get those credit cards out and have fun shopping!

DECO PAINTING HAWAII SEPTEMBER 2 • 2012 15

Painting your way to a picture-perfect look D eco Painting Hawaii offers residential and commercial interior and exterior painting as well as wood staining and a variety of faux finishing services. But the company’s services don’t end there. Its sister company, Aloha Interior Design & Remodeling, takes upgrading your home to new levels, offering wallpapering, Venetian plastering and mosaic tiling services. The company motto is “dream the unthinkable, build the unimaginable.” This can be seen firsthand in the owner’s personal residence, where a few colors on the palette are enhanced by contrasting textures and accent colors. Deco Painting uses a special technique that eliminates cutting in and therefore eliminates those ugly brush lines around doors, windows and trim. The company pays attention to details and knows that proper prep work is the key to quality workmanship. Unless otherwise instructed, all light-switch and plug faceplates are removed; doors are removed, prepped and sprayed before being replaced; blinds, brackets, fixtures and screens are removed and cleaned before being replaced. Painting does this because it knows that it doesn’t make sense to put old, dirty items back onto clean, fresh walls. Again, it’s all in the details. All work is performed by and/or supervised by the owners to meet the highest standards of quality. Our service is not just about the application of materials — excellent customer service is promised from first contact through completion of the project. All materials and workmanship are completely guaranteed. Deco Painting never charges a consultation fee, and no project is ever considered too small. The staff members at Deco Painting are professionals in their business. Staffers are currently working on two projects, one of which is a 12-by-50-foot mural. Pictures will be up on the website upon completion.

The company just finished two units in Honolulu and is booked until the last week of September. Time is of the essence for booking its services. Deco Painting has recently completed a Pricing Guide, a comprehensive list of base rates for painting services provided by the company so that customers can glance over the cost of labor per painting project. This guide will assist customers in creating and managing a budget in the beginning

stages of home improvement/renovations. While this guide is a perfect starting point, Deco Painting understands that all jobs are unique and invites customers to call for a free consultation and estimate. If you would like to receive a copy of the Pricing Guide, call 255-8007. You can view some of the completed projects on the website, www.decopaintinghawaii.com, or call the company to schedule a consultation with a free written estimate.

ALTERNATIVE ELECTRIC SEPTEMBER 2 • 2012 17

Everything you ever wanted to know about PV systems T

he photovoltaic (PV) industry has been booming over the last few years, and most people know what solar photovoltaics are, as they can be seen on rooftops throughout the state. As the price of electricity rises, more and more of us are considering PV systems for our own homes. Because a PV system is a big investment, we should do our research before committing to a specific solar provider, especially since PV companies are a dime a dozen. So what should we be concerned about when considering

ALTERNATIVE ELECTRIC contact // 630-6741 • 285-3663

PV? First of all, what qualifies a company to install a PV system? The proper licensing is a necessity. To install PV, a C-13 electrical license is a must. There are a few ways to check online if a company has the proper licensing. Searches can be done through http://pvl.ehawaii.gov/pvlsearch/app or http:// hawaii.bbb.org. A qualified electrician can tell you if your service needs to be upgraded, if your grounding system is up to par or if any electrical modifications should be made to accommodate the PV system. After all, you will be producing your own power and there is a lot of electrical wiring involved. Next, getting several estimates from different companies is always a good idea. From these estimates, we can compare pricing and materials. Are the materials being used comparable to one another? Some companies may use roof flashings, while others may not. A properly installed flashing will ensure a leak-free roof penetration. After all, the bigger the system, the more roof penetrations will be made. Another important factor to consider is the PV panel manufacturer. PV panel manufacturers also are a dime a dozen. Manufacturers may specify certain specifications for their panels, but how long have they been producing solar panels? Alternative Electric proudly installs Solar World Sun Modules. Solar World is America’s largest solar manufacturer with more than 35 years of experience in the solar production industry. A PV system is a wise investment, but it’s more than just installing panels on a roof. Homeowners should do their homework before installing a system. After all, a PV system should last at least 25 years. Time spent researching will pay dividends for the life of the PV system. For a free PV estimate/consultation, give Alternative Electric a call at 630-6741 or 285-3663.

ver the past several months, Graham Builders has brought you the story of the Nelson-Keller family’s unique, energy-efficient home in Hawaii Kai. After razing Alan Nelson’s childhood home, the couple focused on creating a design that features truly spectacular ocean-inspired design elements that pay tribute to their waterfront surroundings. The Nelson-Kellers are busy working with Graham Builders to put the final touches on the new floor, lay tiling and install cabinets. We got an up close look at their stained lattice work wood trim on the exterior in addition to the unique rain screen system for added ventilation. “My dream is now becoming a reality,” said Cyndi Nelson. “I’m imagining sitting on our new lanai with a glass of wine while looking out onto the Marina. The truth about your plumbing

o you know what’s behind the drywall in your home? Unless you’ve ever had a home custom-built or have personally worked in construction, you might be unaware of the vital systems hidden within the walls of your home. But knowing how those systems work can help you make smart, money-saving decisions when building or renovating. Typically, when builders construct a house, they conceal electrical wiring, air ducts, insulation, home-networking wires and plumbing within the walls. It’s important for all those systems to be well-made and high-functioning, but in the case of plumbing, it’s especially vital. When you’re thinking about plumbing as part of a renovation or a new build, what you don’t want it to do is almost as important as what you do want it to do. Ruptured or leaking pipes can cause massive damage to other parts of your home, so it’s important to choose a type of pipe that can withstand decades of rigorous use — even in harsh water and soil environments. In the past, builders of American homes used metals that ranged from lead (obsolete now) to copper (the most common metal pipe found in homes today). These days, plastic is the go-to material for home plumbing. Cross-

using a PEX-a ring, Uponor systems also resist leaking at joints and connections. If you decide to use PEX, it is best to hire a plumbing professional trained to install this material. That’s because PEX requires slightly different installation techniques compared with copper or even rigid plastic systems such as CPVC. Also, be sure to check the warranty: Some PEX manufacturers offer up to a 25-year warranty if their systems are installed by a trained professional. PEX plastic tubing has been proven to be more effective in plumbing systems than copper, CPVC and other materials because of several factors. One such reason is that PEX tubing provides better insulation than copper, so less heat is lost from the hot water moving through the plastic tubing. Less heat loss means less energy is needed to keep water hot. When it comes to assessing what’s behind your home’s drywall, opting for a plumbing system made of quality products of proven reliability can help save you money on water and energy, while keeping your home comfortable and safe for as long as you live there. For more information on PEX, visit “Plumbing Systems for Homeowners” at www.uponor-usa.com.

HAWAII CENTRAL FEDERAL CREDIT UNION

Easy financing options for going solar I f you’ve been thinking about installing a solar photovoltaic (PV) system to your home, now is the time to get that project started. By now you’ve heard all about the benefits of going green with a PV system and how it will reduce your monthly electric bill. But let’s face it, it isn’t cheap! However, with the help of both state and federal tax credits, PV systems are becoming more and more affordable. While the tax benefits and other incentives provide a lot of assistance in the overall cost, the initial cost of a PV system is still a big investment. If you don’t have the upfront cash to pay for this immediately, there are financing options available including Hawaii Central Federal Credit Union’s (HCFCU) Solar Photovoltaic Loan special. This loan has flexible terms that can help you with the initial purchase and installation costs. With HCFCU’s Solar Photovoltaic Loan, you are able to work with the solar contractor of your choice, and in some cases, you can qualify for the “cash price,” which can save you thousands of dollars. If a PV system is still too big of an investment right now, HCFCU has other loan products including a Solar Water Heater Loan Promotion to help make your home a little greener and

HAWAII HOME EXPO SEPTEMBER 2 • 2012 23

Here’s how to sit in the lap of luxury

t one point or another, many people have heard the phrase, “cleanliness is next to godliness.” The saying might have very different meanings for a lot of people, but it’s fairly universal that being clean is important. Americans take a lot of steps to make sure they are clean, from twice a day showers (especially in a humid, tropical climate like Hawaii’s) to brushing thrice daily. However, one aspect in which Americans are a little behind is in toilet habits. Hawaii Home Expo has been selling Toto toilets for more than two decades and one of its best products, which is often underutilized, is Washlet seats. Every day, people use water to cleanse themselves, from taking baths and showers to washing their hands and faces. Nothing cleanses like nature’s most soothing and essential element, which is why Washlets purify and clean in ways that cannot be experienced with traditional bathroom rituals. The Washlet offers a lot of amazing technology cleverly disguised as a toilet seat that fits virtually any standard toilet. At your command, the Washlet extends an integrated wand to release a warm, soothing stream of aerated water to provide the ultimate in personal cleansing. But this is not a conventional bidet; the wand self-washes and retracts after each use. Though the innovative features  vary by model, the

It may take some getting used to, but it’s an investment in comfort that is well worth every cent. Football players Tom Brady and Wes Welker use it (check out http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/ wes-welker-big-fan-tom-brady-toilet-175352466.html), so maybe it’s time more people give it a try. Set the tone in your home with the latest cabinet trends B

efore purchasing a new set of cabinets for your new kitchen or bathroom remodeling project, there are some important things you should consider. First, keep in mind that cabinets account for 40 to 50 percent of the total cost of your kitchen or bathroom remodel, so setting your total budget figure will be one of the first things you’ll need to do.

Are stock cabinets for you? Stock cabinets are the least expensive option and are constructed in standard shapes and sizes. They are, however, available in a limited number of woods or finishes and offer few style options beyond basic drawers and cupboards. If you plan on living in your home for only a short time or are working with a tight budget, stock cabinets are your best

bet. But if this is going to be the kitchen or bath of your dreams, you should look for top-quality construction and materials found with semi-custom and custom cabinets.

able when ordering these higher-end cabinets. And if your space is too narrow for a cabinet and counter, a tall pantry closet provides lots of space for pots and pans in

Make quality your first choice No matter what type of cabinet you select, all cabinets should have solid frames, door and drawer fronts, reinforced corners and closed backs, and the finish on the wood should be smooth. Also, cabinet drawers and doors will be opened and closed many times throughout the day, so they should operate smoothly and quietly each time.

Cabinets help establish a mood Finally, remember that the cabinets you select will set the tone of your new kitchen or bathroom and play a major role in transforming your space. Browse magazines and stores to get an idea for what suits you. Look for styles that blend well with the architecture of your home as well as the interior design of other rooms. But don’t get bogged down by all of these decisions. Elite Design Group LLC offers free estimates and consultations for kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects, and its professional in-house kitchen designer can help you realize the perfect set of cabinets for your home. For more information, visit www.edghi.com.

Versatility of semi-custom Semi-custom cabinets are factory-built in standard sizes with many options for storage, design and style. The high end of cabinet construction is custom cabinets, which are constructed in either a workroom to designer specifications or on-site in any style and finish you choose. Semi-custom and custom cabinets provide endless solutions to your storage needs: pullout shelves for pots and pans; a lazy Susan for spices; a wine rack; vertical dividers for trays and cookie sheets; even an appliance garage or pullout bins are all just some of the standard add-ons availAN ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT PUBLISHED BY OAHU PUBLICATIONS, INC. | ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
