ADD POULTRY TO the list of species you know how to treat effectively with this comprehensive course all about pet and small flock chooks! As well as being a popular pet in many urban settings, there has been an increase in the number of semi-commercial flocks in New Zealand. This means that veterinarians are increasingly expected to have a working knowledge of disease conditions in chickens and other poultry in order to best serve their current and potential clients.
This course will cover a wide range of topics to help you increase your knowledge, shift your practice to preventive medicine and achieve better welfare for your poultry clients’ birds! Regardless of whether you are treating one chook or a flock, this course will equip you with the essential skills you need to be an effective poultry veterinarian.
Diversify your practice and feel comfortable tackling cases that previously may have been too challenging. With support from experienced tutors you can make a real difference to your clients’ poultry with this online course!
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
» Expand the range of patient species you feel confident caring for. » Learn how to more effectively treat your poultry patients. » Enhance the welfare outcomes for your poultry cases. » Make more rational antibiotic and therapeutic choices.
Further information is available atnzva.org.nz/event/20avian.
This course is worth eight hours of CPD activity. NZVA members get access to the MyCPD record. n

Just as veterinarians encourage clients to seek their help early, the New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA) encourages veterinarians to do the same when it comes to emotional/ mental health. Three ways in which the NZVA can help you:
Wellbeing Hub
We recognise that a veterinary career can be stressful and demanding at times and there are periods when veterinarians may feel particularly vulnerable.
It is very important for the NZVA to provide members with wellbeing support. The Wellbeing Hub is a new member benefit initiative and will continue to be updated as more useful resources become available. It will provide access to valuable resources to help veterinarians remain healthy and well, as well as providing support to those who are struggling with stress, anxiety or burnout.

Vitae: Free counselling for veterinarians
All veterinarians in New Zealand can get free, confidential counselling (up to three fully funded face-to-face sessions with a trained psychologist) and a 24-hour phone service that’s open seven days a week.
This is offered through Vitae and is funded by the NZVA and the Veterinary Council of New Zealand.
Appointments can be made via the 24-hour free phone service. Phone 0508 664 981 or complete the self-referral counselling form, which can be found here: www.vitae.co.nz/ contact/counselling-form.
Vitae provide the NZVA with confidential reports quarterly. These provide us with a valuable snapshot of current issues, early warning of potential hot spots, and will allow us over time to track trends and highlight workplace health and safety issues that have a direct impact on veterinarians, such as stress, financial problems and depression. www.vitae.co.nz
NZVA Mentor Scheme
The NZVA Mentor Scheme partners veterinarians (who are NZVA members) with experienced practitioners, to provide collegial support at any career stage. Whether you are a new graduate, returning to practice, or just feel like you would benefit from advice and support, we can help. Read more about how mentoring works in the article below, published in VetScript by Dianne Gardner from the School of Psychology at Massey University: www.nzva.org.nz/mentorarticle.
