Welcome to Elsdon Park’s first ever reduction sale, which we are conducting in conjunction with a Dewar Partnership Dispersal.

For those of you who we haven’t met yet, Elsdon Park is a boutique breeding operation owned by Lib and Katrina Petagna that was established in 2022 and is located just outside of Matamata, NZ.

With the annual combination of new foals, a commitment to sourcing elite bloodlines and members of our JML Bloodstock Racing Team retiring to the broodmare band, our numbers rise exponentially each season.

As we are committed to retaining a smaller, selective broodmare band, this seasonal growth necessitates an annual reduction and in turn, what we believe is a great opportunity for buyers to access some quality bloodstock.

With the addition of the Dewar Partnership dispersal (see explanation of this partnership at end of lookbook) this year where all the horses reside at Elsdon Park, we have made the decision to have a joint online sale, where we can offer the mares, young stock and racehorses to the market at one location and in turn host people to our property to showcase the incredible country that these horses are raised on.

This colt is a strong bodied type with plenty of bone and substance.

He is by exciting young stallion Ardrossan, who’s service fee has been increased to $20,000 + GST for the 2024 breeding season after a brilliant start to his stallion career having already sired 4 stakes winners and an additional 4 stakes performers.

From Ardrossan's first crop he has sired 11 winners, 3 stakes winners and 1 stakes placegetter from just 44 foals. His second

crop of just 58 foals, he has already sired 4 winners from just 8 runners including 1 stakes winner and 2 stakes placegetters. He averaged over $200,000 across all yearling sales last year with a top lot of $390,000 and is proving to be a very exciting young stallion.

This colt boasts a strong pedigree being closely related to Group 1 winners Probabeel, Never Been Kissed and Savvy Coup, along with multiple other black-type winners.

His half-brother by Tivaci looks to have a nice future with having 3 starts in Australia this season for 2 nice placings.

This filly is the fourth live foal of Katherine Wright which makes her a three-quarter sister to the Australian stakes winning 2yo “Beau Dazzler” who was a $85,000 yearling purchase by Paul Moroney.

Beau Dazzler flashed home for 4th on the 8th of June in the Listed The Phoenix at Eagle Farm. He is held in high regard by his trainers Tony & Maddy Sears and ran 5th in the Gr.1 JJ Atkins last Saturday.

Katherine Wright’s first live foal is an

Ardrossan colt called Spanish Idol. After trialling well in New Zealand, he was sold to Mike Moroney. He has subsequently had 3 starts before spelling. He is back in work and impressed Mike at the jump-outs recently and is a couple of weeks away from racing.

Her second colt called Taken, a 2yo by Ardrossan, had one trial in late March for a win in NZ before being sold to the Price / Kent stable for more than $250,000. He is currently spelling.

Katherine Wright also has a nice yearling colt by Ardrossan who is likely to be sold at the Ready to Run Sale in November.

This filly has a good temperament, no vices and is a nice attractive and athletic type.

A lovely big, scopey filly out of the O’Reilly mare Kissmekate, who is a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Nashville.

This weanling filly’s half-sister by Super Seth made $110,000 at last year’s NZB Book 1 yearling sale and looks an exciting prospect, being trained in Australia by Simon Zahra.

She also has a very nice Ardrossan half-

brother who is being aimed at this year’s Ready to Run sale.

This filly is an attractive and athletic type that will make into a lovely yearling. She has a Book 1 pedigree and is a goodlooking type to match.

She is out of the 3-time winning and Group placed mare O’Angel, who is a half-sister to Group placed Angel Bee, the noted dam of Group 2 winner Vangelic.

This filly is only the 3rd foal from O’Angel. Her first foal by Shooting to Win

impressively won a trial before being sold, while her second foal, a 2yr old filly by Shalaa, is being trained by Fraser Auret.

She is by the very promising young sire

Hello Youmzain, who will stand for a fee of $30,000 + GST this season. With his oldest crop just yearlings, his brilliant yearling sales results have reflected the high level of support for this stallion and he is leaving a great style of horse.

This sire’s NZB Book 1 average this year was over $170,000 and he sold up to $425,000 across the sales series.

This filly has no vices and is good to handle.

As a young foal, she had a screw placed for a few weeks in her NF fetlock to correct a mild varus conformation issue, which has worked well in correcting this.

A very attractive filly out of the fast Pins mare Queen of Pop, who was a winner on 2 occasions and Group 2 placed along with running 4th in a Group 1.

She boasts a quality black-type pedigree being a half-sister to Group winner Pop Star Princess, who won 10 races over a sprinting trip and also the stakes placed Queen of Zealand.

Her half-brother by Ardrossan sold for $440,000 at last year’s Ready to Run Sale after a very impressive breeze-up. Her Super Seth half-brother yearling is being aimed at this year’s Ready to Run Sale.

Her second foal is the 2yo filly Loch Angel being trained by Stephen Marsh, who at her first trial was nearly brought down on the home turn, thankfully was unhurt but was then spelled.

She is back in full training and had her first trial this prep on June 11 at Rotorua. Marsh was very happy with the run as he didn’t want her knocked around on the heavy track and she had a good blow after.

She will trial again before the close of this auction at either Cambridge on the 18th or Pukekohe on the 25th.

The Faith’s third foal is a nice attractive, athletic filly and is to be sold as part of the dispersal.

To date El Amor has had 9 races for a 2nd, a 3rd, a 4th and 2 x 5th. She was 5th this campaign fresh up on 29 May before running a close 3rd (0.3l) at Cambridge on 12 June. It was an excellent effort after drawing the outside barrier of 11 and having a tough run especially going around the turn.

She is being sold as a racing and breeding prospect and is currently in full training with Stephen Marsh in Cambridge.

Loch Angel trialed back in February when she was almost knocked over coming around the final turn:

She was thankfully unhurt but subsequently went for a spell and resumed training on 28 March when weighing 532kgs. She is back in full training and had her first trial this preparation on June 11 at Rotorua.

Stephen Marsh was very happy with the run as he didn’t want her knocked around on the heavy track and she had a good blow after. She will trial again before she is sold at either Cambridge on the 18th or Pukekohe on the 25th.

Her progeny have sold incredibly well in the sales ring with prices such as $325k, $300k, $300k, $170k, $70k etc and with 6 of these horses being fillies and going to quality stallions there is plenty of upside in the pedigree.

Katherine Wright is a half-sister to Pwerfect (dam of the stakes-winning 2yo Beau Dazzler).

She is being sold as part of the Dewar Partnership Dispersal.

Her first live foal is an Ardrossan colt called Spanish Idol, who after trialing well in New Zealand, was sold to Mike Moroney. He has subsequently had 3 starts before spelling. He is back in work and impressed Mike at the jump outs recently and is a couple of weeks away from racing.

Her second colt called Taken, a 2yo by Ardrossan, had one trial in late March for a win in NZ before being sold to the Price / Kent stable for more than $250,000. He is currently spelling.

Purchased in foal to War Decree in 2019, Pwerfect has subsequently been covered by Ardrossan for the last four seasons. Her first colt by Ardrossan showed well above average ability but unfortunately had a paddock accident and died.

Her second Ardrossan is the Australian stakes winning 2yo “Beau Dazzler” who was a $85,000 yearling purchase. After

impressing during the summer, Beau Dazzler suffered bad interference at his second start back, before flashing home the following week for 4th in the Listed The Phoenix at Eagle Farm.

Tears of an Angel is an attractive mare with good conformation and an excellent temperament.

She raced just four times before injuring a ligament. During that brief career she won on debut over 1200m on a good track before running second over 1200m on a slow track. She then ran 4th in the Listed Gore Guineas (good track) over 1335m before running 2nd in the Listed Dunedin Guineas (good track) over 1500m in what proved to be her last race.

She is by Redoute’s Choice’s brother Echoes of Heaven, who has sired 7 stakes

The Faith is a beautiful, striking mare in foal to Ardrossan.

Her first foal called Islay was a beautiful filly but a slower maturing type and has subsequently been sold following her last start, where she ran well below expectations from her track work. She has only had 3 starts.

Her second foal is the 2yo filly Loch Angel who is in training with Stephen Marsh and has had 2 trials. After almost being brought down in her first trial, she was given a

break. She is back in full training and had her first trial this preparation on June 11 at Rotorua. Stephen Marsh was happy with the run, as he didn’t want her knocked around and she had a good blow after. She will trial again before she is sold.

Vidiano is a young, attractive 2-win daughter of Pierro and out of a mare with an international pedigree.

She is being sold as part of the Dewar Partnership Dispersal

She was a $200,000 yearling purchase by Murray Baker. Her second dam is by Hurricane Run, who is also the dam of Pwerfect, so the cross works well with Ardrossan. Her dam is a half-sister to Mapperley Stud’s high-class stallion Contributer.

Vidiano’s weanling half-brother by Farnan made $180,000 at the recent William Inglis Sydney Weanling Sale and her yearling half-brother also by Farnan made $160,000 at the same 2023 sale, so there is the opportunity of some good upgrades.

Vidiano is in foal to Ardrossan with her first foal and she has a nice early cover. She would be an outstanding addition to any broodmare band.

Dewar Partnership

The Dewar Partnership was set up in 2019 by a group of Ardrossan shareholders with the focus on supporting the young sire during his first seasons at stud.

Nine mares were bred from that first year and six of those mares remain and form part of this dispersal.

The partnership has succeeded beyond expectations thanks to Ardrossan and his ability to sire such good types. The plan was to race the offspring from the first season to ensure they were given every opportunity and then to sell some of the offspring from the second and third crops as yearlings.

Dewar has subsequently sold a total of eight yearlings at Karaka 2023 (3 sold) & 2024 (5 sold) for an average of $152,500,

achieving a range of prices from $85,000 to $260,000.

The three from the 2023 sale look well above average with Beau Dazzler (Stakeswinning 2yo) and Maracatu (winner) having raced and Tachyon trialing impressively. There is sure to be plenty of upside and excitement in the future as the racing careers of all eight unfold.

With Ardrossan now firmly established as one of New Zealand’s most exciting young stallions, the goals of the partnership have been achieved and the time has come wind up the partnership as was the agreement on formation.

As for Ardrossan, he has already had 11 winners and 3 stakes winners and 1 stakes placegetter from an initial crop of just 44

foals. From a second crop of just 58 foals, he has already sired 4 winners from just 8 runners including 1 stakes winner and 2 stakes placegetters. These include some very exciting gallopers, so his commercial future looks assured. This season the Waikato Stud-based sire will stand at a fee of $20,000 plus GST.
