One of the things we love about the real estate industry is the continuous education on the ways people live, their individual tastes and styles, and their evolving needs and wants in a home throughout a lifetime.

Architecture and design preferences, growing or decreasing families, and changes in life circumstances all play a part when purchasing property. Sometimes, it purely comes down to that indescribable feeling when you first set foot in a home. It can be a highly emotional decision.

For Gemma and Richie McCaw, it was a combination of the above that inspired them to relocate to their new Christchurch home. Having just welcomed their second daughter, Gemma knew instinctively the property was the backdrop of many happy family memories to come. She kindly opens the doors to their beautiful abode for Property Style on page 6, and we find out what ‘home’ really means to her.

We also talk to renowned interior designer Jason Bonham about the design preferences of Kiwis vs the rest of the world, and discover some incredible projects he has worked on overseas. You can read Jason’s impressive story on page 10.

Enjoy this special issue.

For performance and wellbeing coach Gemma McCaw, a happy home is a state of mind, rather than a physical address. Nonetheless, she has managed to achieve a coveted balance of style and child-friendly functionality in her contemporary family retreat.

Who do you live with?

My husband Richie and our two young daughters, three-year-old Charlotte and eightmonth-old Grace.

How long have you lived in your home and what initially attracted you to it?

We moved into this house just after Grace was born so it was a busy time! I believe there is a real difference between a house and a home and when I walked in I just had that feeling, ‘this is so us’. It’s tucked down a long driveway and there is a lovely indoor-outdoor flow that leads to lots of greenery. When I first looked at the garden I remember feeling a sense of happiness as I imagined myself playing with the kids and running around the backyard like I used to when I was little.

What is it about your home that makes you feel at ease?

I definitely feel a sense of calm being in nature so I love the greenery, whether I’m outside in it playing with the girls or looking out to it when I’m cooking or we’re eating. The house faces the sun too which is a bonus and a great vit-D top-up! Our lives are busy so being surrounded by nature keeps me grounded. I also try to protect myself against having a cluttered mind so inside we have a very minimal approach to things. We keep our interior simple with clean lines. That’s not to say it’s always clean!

Describe your perfect Sunday at home: With young kids we are awake early no matter what day it is. My day always kicks off with a Nespresso coffee followed by exercise. For me it’s a workout, biking on the trainer in the garage or a quick run around Hagley Park while Rich watches the girls. I love family meal times together so we’ll often sit down to pancakes then it’s outside to play with the girls or just sit in the sun. We do most of our chores on a Sunday, so we get ourselves ready to tackle the week ahead. A Sunday well spent brings a week of content.

What is your favourite room of the house and why? Probably unsurprisingly it’s our book room! Which, before you think sounds indulgent, also doubles as the kids’ toy and junk room. Reading is important to me so I wanted books to take a prominent space in our home. We have a giant shelf that stretches high and low so Charlotte can reach and choose books to read herself. I have dreams of lying in the room and reading but in reality I spend more of my time in there playing these days. It has a beautiful energy. No TV, no electronics, just books (oh, and toys, for now).

If you could change anything about your home, what would it be?

I’m not someone who puts a value on what’s in a house, for me it’s more important who is in the house. For that reason, I’d love another bedroom. Between us and the kids it’s a pretty full house these days. We do have one guest room but I love having people to stay and it would be great to have even more room! I love being surrounded by family and friends and making them feel welcome in our home.

Tell us about your interior design style:

I wouldn’t say this is a strong point of mine. I’m certainly no expert and take quite an intuitive approach. If you were to try to put a label on it I’d say I favour quite a minimalist style. Practical, clean and simple with a lean towards natural and neutral colours. It’s not what you see, it’s how a place makes you feel. For that reason, rather than fancy pieces of artwork, you’ll find more photos on our walls. We had some beautiful photos taken of the girls and they make me feel so grateful whenever I look at them.

What is your favourite functional or decorative piece and what is special about it?

In our book/toy room we have a really comfy sofa. It’s so good to settle in on, snuggle into the girls and bury ourselves in books. When I was pregnant I used to

sneak in a nap on it whenever I could. We also have a giant photo on the wall of us walking up a Wānaka hill on our wedding day. The whole setting is so peaceful and brings me joy and calm at the same time.

When it comes to homewares and furniture, do you prefer luxury, new pieces or vintage finds?

I don’t really follow too many trends or fads. I find it more important to focus on longevity so on the rare occasions we do invest in new homeware, I try to make sure it’s something we’d have for life. It’s better for us and the planet. We don’t have high-end luxury things and I don’t change it up too much.

With young kids I want them to feel at home and not for us to be fussing or worrying over spills or broken things. Plus, let’s be honest, not many parents want to spend much time with young kids in homeware stores!

There are a few key pieces I love and they mostly revolve around food and family. Our dining table and breakfast bar are two of my favourite spots in the house. We insist on eating all our meals together, and I love how I can sit the girls in front of me or close by and make meal times a happy space. The truth is, I don’t put enormous value on homewares. For me it’s not the things in life that matter, it’s the people. It’s not the house, it’s the people that make a place a home. ◇

The world stage

It’s often been said that – as a small country at the southern end of the globe – New Zealanders live in a bit of a bubble (a sentiment that existed well before Covid took the term). It’s part of the reason why renowned interior designer Jason Bonham has developed an unmistakable knack for international style, and merging the chic with classic Kiwi conservatism.

His curated and contemporary eye for style is now in hot demand all over the world. The Bonham Architecture & Interiors Group has two offices in Auckland and Arrowtown that work with clients in NZ, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Europe and the USA, and Jason has this year launched Bonham Art & Design, a new gallery space and online platform that curates and sells the world’s most exclusive luxury furniture, art and heirlooms.

“Kiwis have traditionally been conservative – the Australians less so – however there is a big shift underway globally in the highend space where clients and collectors want a point of difference and have been underwhelmed by the current offerings,” he says. “After supplying so much international art and design to my clients, I have experienced a huge gap in the market.

London, New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles have been my stomping grounds and where I trained, so it’s appropriate to give the design community new things to be inspired by and provide their clients with unique and beautiful pieces. I felt I had a responsibility to the industry.”

Jason made the jump from fashion styling to interiors in 2001 and has since taken on some incredible projects, both in NZ and overseas.

“In San Francisco I was lucky to work on part of the project in Steve Jobs’ house in Palo Alto, amongst other Silicon Valley hard hitters,” he recalls. “Even though I was a design baby at the time, I learnt the good lessons around how every millimetre counts (or feet and inches, as it were).”

He also assisted in the design of a large estate in Montecito, California, where Kim Kardashian married Kris Humphries in 2011, and worked on residences in London for the Sultan of Brunei. “Passion is what gets you though in this industry, you really have to love what you do,” he says. “I have always loved fashion and the artistry of how many different materials and textures work so seamlessly together. Paired with stylish colour combinations and being attune to the creative process, it was this that inspired me to focus my direction and bring an international approach to my work.”

The global influence is clearly popular for homeowners in NZ and the Bonham Group has undertaken some significant high-end projects closer to home, such as The Pacifica, an ultra-luxurious development and the country’s tallest residential building in Auckland’s CBD. Jason and his team designed the interior of The Pacifica “super penthouse”, which is currently listed with New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty.

“Living in spaces that capture a city in both the day and the night, it is important to ensure that it’s lovely and light during the day, and sexy and moody at night. It needed to feel restful, but at the same time edgy and sophisticated,” he says. “Luxury is all about the mix of materials; colour, texture, wood, metal, glass, fabrics, art and furniture. And if you can describe someone’s personality through materiality, you have done your job.” ◇

THE MODERN MINIMALIST

How to pull o a sleek interior look that still feels cosy.

While the idea of minimalism in décor certainly has its merits, the concept can be a little more daunting to achieve. But gone are the days where minimalism equals stark-white walls plus clean-lined furniture: it is entirely possible to create a minimalist interior that’s warm and inviting.

“Many people have a misconception that minimalism and starkness are the same thing. That’s not true,” says interior design director Ximena Rodriguez. “Minimalism and warmth do not have to be contradictory principles. For us, a neutral colour palette, materials, and textures are the building blocks of warm minimalism.”

At its core, and when designed well, a minimalist home offers a calming environment and a sense of serenity, Rodriguez says.

“A cleaner environment creates more space for your mind to concentrate on positive ideas, goals or tasks.”

Perfect the palette

“Colour has a big impact on mood, and we’re seeing a movement away from brighter whites and toward warmer, neutral tones that offer a soothing effect,” Rodriguez says.

Instil a sense of calm by utilising quiet colours and textured materials or opt for tonal vibes, using colours from the same family. For furniture, this might mean using cherry and walnut finishes (which live in the same mid-brown family) or a range of neutral tones and textures that complement one another.

Add dimension

Texture is one of the easiest and most effective ways to make a space feel more inviting. Think textiles, such as rugs and window treatments, and layered textures (wallpaper, chunkier weaves on furniture and lush cushions).

nzsothebysrealty.com 12

Incorporating a few different textures can help keep a space varied and welcoming, especially if the colours are neutral and complementary.

“This is where materials play a role. For kitchens and bathrooms, there’s interest now in stones that feature unique patterns and colours such as blue and green tones, which bring a much warmer feel than a standard white marble,” Rodriguez says.

Lighting also comes into play

“Lighting that’s concealed or integrated into millwork can be very minimalist but it can also adjust over the course of the day to match circadian rhythms and have a positive influence on mood,” she adds.

Artwork can bring a sense of dimension, interest, and texture, too.

“Featuring your favourite artwork or a few curated accessories displayed in smaller moments can go a long way towards adding style and warmth,” Rodriguez advises.

Go green

Plants bring life and energy, and their rich colours are wonderfully contrasted against a simple neutral palette. They also lend a sense of tranquillity and a connection to

nature that has proven health benefits like air purification.

“If your home offers great views of a natural green landscape, you might not need much greenery within your interior spaces. Even so, it only takes a few strategically placed plantings to bring that feeling of nature into your home in a way that contributes to a warm, minimalist mood,” says Rodriguez.

Clear clutter

The first principle of minimalism is a clutterfree space. For that, storage is essential for achieving an overall ‘less is more’ aesthetic – but be prepared to get creative with your storage solutions.

“We like to find ways to conceal storage by integrating cupboards into wall panelling, for instance,” recommends Rodriguez. ◇

Finding balance

Matching outstanding architecture to a monumental landscape is no easy feat but this striking home at the foothills of The Remarkables in Queenstown manages to achieve the equilibrium.

Designed by renowned Queenstown architect Michael Wyatt, the award-winning Pokapu home embraces the finest aspects of luxurious alpine living; vast mountain views, complete seclusion, a private pond and 40 hectares of space.

Bold in character, the enchanting home’s exterior

proudly displays a considered blend of Gibbston Valley schist, exotic hardwoods and glass walls, ensuring this timeless masterpiece is admired for many generations to come.

Inside, details such as polished concrete floors, open fires and feature lighting enhance the three ensuited bedrooms, family room and library retreat. The fully equipped entertainer’s kitchen and dining area leads to peaceful and sundrenched decks for unobstructed views.

Said views are best enjoyed with a glass of wine from Pokapu’s subterranean wine cellar, which maintains optimal temperature for fine wines all year round.

Scene of dreams

Never underestimate the power of bedroom aesthetics. A bedroom that’s comforting and personalised is the key to rest and relaxation and unlocks an overall higher level of wellbeing.

Soothing earthy hues, soft textures and subtle cues from Mother Nature are big for bedrooms in 2022; stone-coloured linens, calming greens and rattan and wood furniture complement each other nicely. But it’s not all beige and boring – add brightness and beauty to a bedroom with a standout piece of art, a canopy bed, opulent headboard or a statement pendant light.

High tide

nzsothebysrealty.com 18

It’s been nearly 20 years since Aucklander Nicola Webster and her husband Alex sat down and really contemplated the pros and cons of life by the sea.

While incredibly rewarding in terms of lifestyle and views, there are a couple of undesirable aspects, too. The elements can be unforgiving, and the raw environment sometimes rugged and unpredictable. While a home by the sea may sound like a dream lifestyle, homeowners soon discover those sea breezes bring with them the need for extra exterior maintenance, and outdoor furniture and accessories that can withstand the harsh conditions.

This realisation sparked the idea of COAST New Zealand, a company specialising in luxury outdoor beanbags and cushions, as well as an exclusive collection of luggage, throws and blankets.

Nicola says there was a significant demand for quality outdoor accessories that were fade-resistant and stood the test of time.

“We were depressed by the growing availability of low-cost, man-made materials and the proliferation of cheap and functional outdoor furniture and gear, the durability of which could usually be measured only by its half-life in a landfill,” says Nicola. “We believe that the ocean, the great outdoors, and the people who go there, deserve better and for that reason we set out to produce beautiful, practical accessories that are not only enduring but timeless.”

COAST New Zealand’s opulent, high-quality products are now strategically placed in five-star resorts and billion-dollar superyachts around the world.

“We started out as a specialist supplier to superyachts – and this remains a large part of our business today,” Nicola explains. “We continue to borrow many of the materials and methods that were previously the reserve of luxury yacht-building. Contemporary ocean-going sailing yachts must be comfortable and opulent, yet still need to withstand the harshest conditions at sea.”

Nicola, Alex and the team have created a luxurious collection of bean bags, cushions and soft bags, and also offer a bespoke service for one-off colours and client personalisation, such as embroidered initials. The entire range is handmade in NZ to enable strict quality control and fluidity in adapting to changing tastes, trends and colourways.

“It is a real thrill when we see our luggage in the airports and holiday spots around the world.

We have been very fortunate to work on some amazing projects in the past 20 years,” says Nicola. “In our first year of business we completed our first commercial project for a resort in the Maldives while we were still working with children under foot and receiving orders via fax. This order led to many other orders from the hotel group, and we still see the beanbags featuring on social media channels today.”

COAST New Zealand bean bags were a feature of the Louis Vuitton Trophy VIP Lounge at the America’s Cup HQ in Auckland, and the eye-catching red bags are a common sight at Takutai Square in Britomart.

“We regularly have customers contact us saying, I have had my COAST bean bags or luggage for 10-plus years and they still look fantastic,” says Nicola. “It’s incredibly satisfying.” ◇

Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty region are renowned for sun, surf and fun.

“Lifestyle” is a word that the locals of the Bay of Plenty use frequently. It encapsulates everything that this laidback region has to offer, from the pristine white-sand beaches and vast forests to the sophisticated arts and culture scene, it is a holy grail home that many people aspire to live one day.

New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty marketing executive Tracey Robins is one of the lucky residents of the bountiful Bay.

Where’s home for you?

Bethlehem – we have been here for 13 months. After living through a full renovation hell in a nearby suburb, we decided to move into a finished, modern home and leave the renovations to the experts.

What’s your favourite local restaurant for a night out?

Lantern in Pāpāmoa. They have a superb menu with Asian-fusion cuisine, lovely staff and incredible drinks. I’m gluten intolerant and they have loads of options to cover everyone’s dietary requirements. The Singapore Sling is a must-try.

What is the Bay of Plenty’s best-kept secret?

There are so many places to visit and see in the Bay but my favourites have to be all the hidden waterfalls. The best is Raparapahoe Falls; beautiful clear waters, always empty and you can bring your dogs and your kids!

What is the best location for a scenic walk or run?

I love taking my Border Collie for a run on a Sunday morning at Waikareao Estuary – the loop has stunning views of the water and a spectacular sunrise. It’s nine kilometres long and great for a long walk, bike ride or run.

nzsothebysrealty.com 20
NZSIR Bay of Plenty marketing manager Tracey Robins.

The most beautiful picnic spot?

Without a doubt my pick has to be McLaren Falls for its fantastic walking tracks, native bush and lovely waterfalls. The trees in autumn are stunning, too.

Where do you go for an afternoon with the family?

Every day is a different adventure in our household! We enjoy heading to the Puketoki Reserve, TECT Park for the bike tracks or The Lakes walkway followed by fish and chips.

What is the Bay of Plenty’s unmissable annual event?

The Mount Maunganui King and Queen of the Mount. Entrants run along and up Mount Maunganui – I haven’t won it yet but there is always next year!

What is your favourite shopping destination? The main shopping strip in Mount Maunganui. There are lots of gorgeous boutiques and great cafés and restaurants to choose from.

Do you have any go-to local wines? I’m more of a cider drinker so I would say Cider Factorie in Te Puna.

What’s the best part about living in the Bay of Plenty?

The lifestyle here is perfect for little or big families. Living so close to everything and being near the beaches has made a huge positive impact on our lives. ◇

Vine-wrapped fish with fregola

This fresh and unexpected dish is by the everpopular Siso Bar and Eatery on Auckland’s Remuera Road.

Fill a medium pot with boiling water, add a tbsp of salt and put on the stove to boil. Add the fregola and cook for 8 minutes. Once the fregola is cooked, strain through a sieve and lay onto a plate to cool. Drizzle with oil to stop the fregola from sticking together.

Toast the seeds in a small pan for 2 minutes and coarsely grind using a pestle and mortar. Add the garlic and salt and continue to pound into a purée. Transfer to a small blender with the herbs, chilli, lime zest and juice. Blend with the oil.

Lay out your vine leaves after removing the stalks, making sure they overlap and are large enough to wrap the entire fish fillet. Season the fish with salt and smother a spoon of the chermoula over and around the fish. Roll the fish in the vine leaves.

To cook, heat a large oven-proof frying pan on a high heat and add 2 tbsp oil. When the oil is hot, carefully place the vine-wrapped fish into the pan using tongs. Sear each side for 1 minute before placing in the oven for 7 minutes to cook through.

Once the fish is cooked, remove from the pan and set on a tray to rest. While the pan is still hot, add the cooked fregola and put back onto the stove for 2 minutes on a high heat. Add 3-4 tbsp of the chermoula along with the butter, lemon juice, chopped parsley and chives.

TO SERVE

Divide the fregola between 4 serving plates. Slice the cooked fish into 4 slices and place on top of the fregola. Garnish with the prepared herb salad.
